Well, here I am exactly 7 days away from starting my liquid diet and I couldnt be more thrilled. I have actually gone without eating a few times before the actual diet to see what it would be like. The first time was for 3 days, the second was for 4. I managed it pretty well. I drank the shakes and they seemed pretty filling. You may think I'm crazy for being excited about not eating for 2 weeks but I really look forward to it. Now I'm not saying I won't be hating it later on into it, I'm just saying that I'm excited about the changes that I am about to go through. Plus, have you ever noticed how much better you feel when you are actually hungry? I'm also sure I will be pretty moody during this time, but I will try and control my anxiety for my Wife's sake LOL. Anyways, I just wanted to get on here real quick and say a few things, as well as thank everyone who answered my questions that I know have been asked numerous times. You were very helpful and greatly appreciated.. ( Why does this sound like a goodbye post ) HAHA!

I don't have a surgery date yet (should get one next week), but I've been trying really hard to start all the behavioral changes now. I am good with the exercise, eating Protein first, taking my Vitamins but there are a few things I'm struggling with and need some tips. I am having a really hard time not drinking with meals and waiting 30 minutes after to drink. It feels like torture! I always carry my Water bottle with me and am constantly drinking water and thirsty (no, I'm not diabetic). How have you all handled this? I am also struggling to eat slowly. I am super busy in my life right now and I seem to always forget to slow down and remember afterwards and am annoyed with myself. It just seems like meals would take FOREVER and I just want to get them over and done with so I can do something else. Any tips would be appreciated!! Thanks

There is a handful of us getting sleeved this week. I'm tomorrow may 28th and all I can think about is the operation and recovery and living life afterwards.

I'm unsure where to begin. I had the Lapband back in 2008 and had nothing but health issues from day one. I had 2 surgeries then the third was the removal. I initially lost around 40 lbs but once it was gone the weight came back. The next step was the sleeve 3/2012. I lost 10lbs before the surgery and 25lbs after. I worked so hard ate right but had no restriction, hired a personal trainer, walked, did it all. 25lbs is all I lost. I gave up and have now gained it all back plus a few (5lbs). After long consideration I am considering a revision. I spoke to my surgeon (who all along wanted me to do the bypass) he said he put in the largest bougie and maybe it was to large for my stomach. He is no longer in my state so I will be meeting with a new surgeon in the next week. I'm so afraid of being a 3 time non loser. I have seen a shrink, considered hypnosis, Ate less in the process of going gluten free. I can't fail again. Please no negative posts. I am doing my best.

Can't decided if I want RNY or Sleeve..
erp replied to Tori Joseph's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I researched all 4 (band, plication, RnY and sleeve). Do your research and as other have said it is only a decision you can make. Ask lots of questions about life, recovery, results for each procedure but know that no matter what anyone tells you, your results may vary. I was sleeved 15 months ago and have lost over 100 lbs so I do think you could lose 170. I was lucky and my recovery was a breeze compared to some. To live this lifestyle and maintain my weight, I track my food and Water intake using My Fitness Pal. I take a multi Vitamin and Calcium supplement daily as well as one or two Protein supplement a day (shake or bar). In addition, I exercise 4 days a week. I still deal with head hunger and clean plate syndrome. Obesity is not a war that is won by getting surgery but now at least I am armed in the fight! Good luck in your journey. -
This has just been my experience, and by no means is it supposed ot represent the norm. My first fill HURT! The Dr had a hard time finding the port, and had to stick me with a needle twice. I ended up with a huge bruise (bigger than the size og a half-dollar). It ended up being too tight and I had to go back three days later for an unfill, and he had to put the needle back through the bruise. That hurt so bad I actually screamed. I just got refilled this past week, and honestly, it didn't hurt nearly as bad as the first (two) time.

Okay, I am beginning to freak out! LOL My surgery is 2 weeks away and I keep thinking about everything...all of it. I see the lists of foods I can and cant have just after surgery, I hear about the hair loss and vomiting and such, and it just scares me. I know for long term this is what would be best. I'm trying not to let my fears stop me from doing this because I know it's the right thing to do... Is anyone else going through the same thing?

on pre op diet and craving a meal!
Healthier2day1227 replied to sheree212's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I so relate to this thread! My doc gave me a three week liquid diet for pre op-insanity! I am on day 4 and was hoping it would be getting easier but it's not. My salvation is organic chicken broth at zero calories and fills me up a bit. Also drinking a lot of water. I've just been trying to give myself a pep talk about how important the liver shrink is. -

ahhhh Husband is not being supportive at the last minute
MissNikki27 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So my husband is being very unsupportive all of sudden....and tomorrow is my surgery. Last night he suggested we all go out to dinner at American Steak house. Then he told me that we will be driving to North Carolina on Saturday to pick up his twins. I am still going to be recovering. Then he told me that because I will be home for the next few weeks he will be leaving my toddler home to save on daycare. I'm already stressed because I know he thinks that this is a minor surgery and he is going to be looking for me to cook, clean, and take care of all that I normally do. I just pray that he realizes that I need his support in this time. -
I'm on day 5 of pre op and starving!
Beach Lover replied to allysonk2009's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I drink premier protein drinks they have 30g of protein per drink. They are the best tasting one I have found and seems to be the one most of us drink. You can get it at Sam's or Costco. I had to do 2 weeks of the liquid diet before the surgery. There are several reasons for this liquid diet. The first one is to shrink your liver it stores fat and needs to be shrunk so it isn't in the way as much during the surgery. The 2nd reason is it helps you get a handle on your food addiction. You will get a head start on what your new life is going to be only later you will get food as well! Head hunger is mean and that is what is going on. Once your surgery is done sometimes you will think you are hungry but you are actually experiencing head hunger. It will drive you crazy but it does get easier and easier. I am 5 weeks post op and doing much better with it. This is your time to be very honest with yourself and recognize your food addictions. This is when you will begin to modify your life so that your sleeve will be successful for life. If you don't get a grip on it then you will eventually gain weight back. Believe it or not my typing this is a reaffirmation for myself that I must continually stay on top of this monster and fix my own problems. With all that said my doctor did tell me when I was going nuts and very hungry that I could do a very lean small piece of meat with some steamed vegetables. I did this like every 3rd day for my pre op and it made the world of difference for me. Good luck on your journey...............you got this! -
Banded in 2009 and had plication TWO days ago
NinaC posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all! I had a band put in in 2009. Lost 70 pounds, it slipped in 2012 and I've gained back 30 pounds. I decided something needed to be done before I gained all my weight back. Had a plication done and my lap band was left in cause it does give me some restriction. I'm in tremendous pain, nothing like the other two surgeries. Has anyone had this done? I would love to hear from anyone in my boat. I'm on day three and thinking "what the hell have I done to myself" that's the drugs and pain talking I'm sure. Chime in if you have two cents!! Thanks a million!! -
Banded in 2009 and had plication TWO days ago
mrsto replied to NinaC's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I felt the same. I was in pain for a good two weeks, and it took a month before I turned the corner. During the first couple of weeks (mostly the first week), there were nights that I'd get up at 2a.m. & take a swig of Lortab. The doctor had told me that this surgery would be nothing compared to the hysterectomy. NOT! The surgery took a lot out of me; I was surprised how long it took to recover completely. But I'm SO glad that I did it! It's doing everything I hoped it would, and I've never had a day with regret. -

Approval letter came today! Questions...
meglynmin posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, before I begin, I just want to say hi. I've been reading for awhile but haven't posted but one other time and I think that was last week! So I got my approval letter today! YAY! My first question, what does "date of admission/service" mean? It's listing May 28th, 2013 as the date of service. My pulmonologist appointment isn't until June 10th. Not to mention May 28th is next week! This surely can't be my surgery date, can it? It also says that I was approved for services/procedures in an Outpatient Hospital setting. Again, can anyone tell me what that means? It would be wonderful if my doctor's office was 24 hours -
This roller coaster of "Yes you're approved" and "no you're not" is too much... I need to throw up and i'm still not sleeved.

I am so sorry for you! I haven't been shot down this way (yet) but I been through alot of red tape with the clinic and insurance. I have been doing their jobs for them for a year! I can somewhat relate to your frustration and disappointment! Hang in there take the time you need and when you are ready to come back we will all be here supporting you! You are worth it! Have a good rest of the week and enjoy the long holiday weekend! -
Just starting out...so many questions
laffypatty posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
New to this group, and enjoying reading about everyone's experiences. After a lifelong journey of gaining and losing, I've begun the process for gastric sleeve surgery. I have so many questions, and I'm having lots of trouble getting answers. I am insured through Aetna. I'd love to know what your experiences have been! My current BMI is almost 41. My insurance requires a 3-year weight history, and I don't know if I've had to have a BMI of 40+ during that time frame in order to be approved. For the last three years, my BMI has been between 35 and 40, and I have no comorbidities. Also, I completed the required blood work and it came back perfect; not a single thing was "flagged." I fear that I won't be considered fat enough or unhealthy enough. (as if!!) I'd love to know how the process went for you if you had a similar situation. Thanks in advance! -
How To Loose Weight Before Lap Band
wildrose1966 replied to nenah's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Depending on what your surgeon requires of you, you may or may not need to do this. It is medically supervised and my surgeon requires it, I even had to buy the shakes from his office. 4 a day for 2 weeks. The purpose is not for weight loss but to shrink the liver to make it easier and safer to do your surgery. -
ha ha ha... Or you could be the shake Nazi..."no shake for you! 2 weeks!" Love Seinfeld.

My husband told me a couple of weeks ago that he saw one of my former coworkers and told her I was having the RNY. I asked him not to tell people because it isn't their business. The town we live in is full of judgmental assholes and the last thing I need is for them looking down at me because of that. Well I thought he understood. He just told me that 3 other people will be thinking of me tomorrow. I asked him what he told them and he said that I was having the surgery. I asked him if he told them the kind of surgery and he said yes because they'll figure it out sooner or later. This caused an instant reaction from me and we got into it. I dont care for people knowing I'm having surgery but it's none of their business what type of surgery unless ME MYSELF or I tells them!!! Am I wrong to be embarrassed that people know?? That's one of my mental issues I have to get passed too, I always worry what everyone else thinks about me. Any advice!?

Forced portion control, which is what I needed. I know numerous by pass patients, some personal friends, who have gained all or some of their weight back. Of course, there are sleeve patients who will regain. The doctor does the surgery, then it's up to us. I went for my three year check up last Friday. His daughter in law works in his office. She has gotten sleeve surgery. That tells me something, but still you have to do what you think is best for YOU. Good luck!

Pre-Op Protein Suggestions
moregoodtimes replied to BamaGirl26's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm currently on day 4 of liquids. I also have a calorie limit so I want as few calories and as much protein as possible for post op. I like Premier shakes.. 30g protein plus easy for me to grab at Costco. I also have added two clear drinks. Cytosport.. I got the tangerine. It has 32g protein, 2 carbs and 120 calories. And the very tastiest one I've found is Designer Whey Blast.. love the grape.. It has 120 cal, 1 carb and 30 protein. The drinks seem to work for me while at my job. I drink the shakes down quickly, but I kind of nurse the drinks along more like sipping a soda now and then. I am fighting the hungry feeling today.. first 3 days went easily. I think the drinks stick longer and I don't think about needing to eat while I sip along on them. In addition to these, I'm doing broth..I found miso broth at Whole Foods, along with beef, chicken and veggie from anywhere. That hot flavorful broth for dinner is really working.. kind of a calm down time and I feel nourished without the extra calories... that's all in my head, but it's working for now. Other than the above, I do lots of herb teas... chamomile, white, green, etc..and I have a big water bottle in my hand and in my car at all times. I think I'm more afraid of getting hungry and blowing it than really being hungry. I am a bit worried about the upcoming weekend. I think work keeps me busy so I don't think about.. am I hungry, is it time to drink some protein so I won't get hungry...yada yada... I also have Isopure (those here call it Isopuke) but I can drink any drink and any shake with no complaints right now. That may change after surgery. I also have Unjury and Nectars but am going saving on them for post op. So that's my current plan... who knows how I'll change it up by the time I get through 2 weeks of this! Best of luck to you.
