    Question

To break a stall you may have to heat MORE. It's counter-intuitive, but your metabolism may have gone into "starvation mode" hanging on to as much as possible. You may still lose inches during a stall and your body will eventually catch up. To speed up the process, try increasing your daily calorie consumption to 1000-1200 for a couple of weeks and see what happens.

    This surgery is bullshit...

Everyone has covered the mental aspects, so I won't repeat. But I'm curious... 1. Do you feel restriction when you eat? At six weeks out, it should be very apparent. What happens if you overeat? 2. What kind of food are you eating? Are you following an eating plan? Or just eating whatever? 3. Do you eat meals? Graze? Both? What is your style of eating? 4. Are you hungry all the time? Or do you eat out of boredom, as a coping mechanism, etc? The folks on this site are super-knowlegeable and might be able to help you figure out what's going on if you provide more information.
  3. Didn't cancel cuz I didn't want to go through with it but I did cancel a week into my Pre-Op diet because I was in the middle of my semester. I realized I wouldn't be able to manage both so now finally going through the procedure in my break time. And definitely sounds like a panic ridden cancellation. May be you can reevaluate why you wanted this procedure and what is stopping you from getting it - Like your fears and hesitations. Hope you can find a way through it and make the best possible decision for yourself.
  4. Hi, I'm 3 weeks post-op (Mini gastric bypass) and I'm in need of some WLS buddies. I have a couple very supportive people and a handful of generally supportive people in my corner but I still feel pretty alone in this. My friends are happy when I'm excited about something and generally sympathetic at some of my struggles but it's not the same as someone who has or is going through it ya know? Someone who could be just as excited as I am when reintroducing a food back into your diet (today was cheese!!!!!) or someone who can understand when you talk about going from being hungry All The Time to now looking at the time and being like oh **** I need to eat! The support group in my area/through my surgeons office meets twice a month and I haven't had a chance to attend a meeting. And I searched on here to see if there was a chat room or discord server or something with no luck. Anyone else feeling like this?
  5. Omg I wished you posted this before my surgery on 11/8. I did a week of liver shrinking diet and loss 15 lbs. Completed all the necessary procedures too and went to my surgery appointment. However….. I was on time but have been having second thoughts the night before and I even had a consultation with my therapist friend (free counseling session 😂) I spent at least 2 hours with my friend and talked about my reservations. She even advised me to cancel or reschedule because of my reservations. I had my consultation with my surgeon on 10/11 and the surgery date on 11/8 was offered. Off course I took it cos I’m overwhelmed but in reality I should have waited for more time but what’s my excuse? Food relationship and the holiday parties and meals. However, after getting my behavioral health evaluation and preop, I was ready. I was so happy with the result of the liver shrinking diet cos in my head look, I can do it without the surgery but I only did the diet because I have a goal date which is the surgery date. I even chatted with my parents about my decision. My dad didn’t want me to get the surgery but my mom was encouraging since she knows how many times I failed doing different diet and exercise program after program. So, day of surgery came. I checked in 30 minutes earlier and I was sent to pre-surgery department. My check in appointment was at 9:00 and surgery at 11:00. I changed to my hospital gown and got comfortable. It’s funny that every commercial was Taco Bell. However, each time I checked the clock I was panicking inside. My surgeon and his team was late and my surgery was pushed until 1:00 PM. In my head, it’s my chance to cancel it and the universe was telling me to cancel it. I wished I listened to the voice inside me but I’m glad I didn’t. I’m glad I did the surgery because I don’t trust myself and if I canceled, I will probably go back to my unhealthy lifestyle. Today is my day 21 post opt and I lose another 20 lbs. It’s totally life changing and tracking my intakes help. I found myself now drinking more water a day to stay hydrated and planning more my meals. I don’t see my surgery as an excuse for weight loss but a tool to help me get back to the healthy side.

    This surgery is bullshit...

I had a chat with my preop team about the LSG I had on 11/8. My preop provider says if patients are using the surgery as an excuse to lose weight faster, they will fail. It’s a process, a tool to help with weight loss. Even with my behavioral health evaluation for the surgery, I expressed that this is a tool for me and not a magic wand to lose weight in a blink of an eye. So far, I’m 20 lbs lighter after 21 days. My post opt week 4 starts tomorrow and it’s a learning process. I don’t count my calorie intake but I record all my intakes including water and clear liquids. I wish you the best of luck and maybe get a weight loss therapist.
  7. No thanks

    This surgery is bullshit...

800 calories long term is unrealistic. I stalled like everyone else and as soon as I was able to eat 1000-1200 calories I started losing the weight because my body was no longer in starvation mode. Try switching it up, try new exercises and see if that helps. I was 210 on my surgery date and am now 170 and my surgery was 9 weeks ago. But I realized I like everyone else who is starving themselves on here that didn’t work for me. Eating a balanced diet that yes Includes carbs has worked for me. What may work for another won’t necessarily work for you and no doctors don’t always know what they’re doing. My doctor didn’t even tell me about so many things that I eventually learned on my own or even on here talking to others. I’m sorry you’re having a rough time and for anyone being judgmental you clearly needed the surgery right so don’t go around bashing anyone else. Just cause you had it easier or your situation worked better. You don’t know what someone is going through and what they’re doing. You y very well could be an ongoing health issue they need to look into. Best of luck.
  8. Yes I did! I cancelled in May, the day before the surgery. A few friends I had told close to the surgery date reacted much differently and I let those worries, thoughts and opinions affect my attitude and eventually my decision. I was scared and had worries I didn’t before. The next week I was so angry at the choice I made, letting that affect my choice that I decided to reschedule and I had the surgery in June. Best decision I made.

    Liquid diet

I start mine on Wednesday for 2 weeks as well! All I get is protein shakes and clear fluids. Let's do it together!! I was supposed to have done all this last month and I was so psyched and happy to get started on the diet. Now I'm just angry and stressed out with all the delays and ruined holidays. (I also have to quarantine 2 weeks before surgery and 2 weeks after.) Plus I've gained 6lbs. since last month.
  10. Reading all the cases of fatigue and exhaustion worry me. Having to quarantine 2 weeks before, 2 weeks after, getting only protein shakes and clear liquids only for the 2 weeks of pre-surg. diet, not being able to go workout at the gym, or swim, or be outside because the weather is terrible. No holidays with family--second year in a row--and having been waiting for 6 months since being cleared for surgery has already depressed me. I don't think I can take months of feeling horrible and exhausted afterward. I feel like I've already lost a year of my life because of all the unnecessary and even bogus bs. The program I'm in throws in everything but the kitchen sink, charges from the patient obscenely for it, and leaves the patient twisting in the wind unendingly. ugh.

    Liquid diet

I did my 2-week pre-op liquid diet twice: the first time the surgery was cancelled the night before (Covid); the second time was right before my actual surgery. I was elated to be on the liquid diet both times because it brought me that much closer to my visions of a better life!

  13. I love this thread!! Can anyone else also eat a food only once? I no longer crave or like sweet things (yoghurt, over night coats, honey, etc). I also immediately stop eating if I dont love the taste of something. I wish I could say it’s because of discipline or at least a conscious decision but it’s not. The moment I taste something that I either dont like or just dont care for that much I immediately lose my appetite. That’s completely new!!! The strangest thing I noticed though is that I can’t eat things more than once in a row. For example: I made bean soup and had so much left over that I planned on eating it throughout the next week. The first time I had it it tasted so so good. The second time it made me naseous (so I stopped) and the third time just the smell alone made me nearly 🤢. Same thing with other foods. Oh! And I HATE garlic!!! So weird! Used to love it and put it in pretty much anything. My sense of smell also seems heightened and sensitive. So much has changed!

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I got my surgery end of September and stopped losing weight for three weeks. It was agonizing!! On top of that I couldnt use the bathroom and felt super nauseous. I regretted my surgery and cried and felt very sorry for myself. Once I was able to use the bathroom (talked to my nutritionist about what to do) everything turned out just fine. I’m only (almost) 9 weeks out but the last four weeks I’ve been losing 3-4lbs per week. What I’m saying is: don’t give up. Don’t stress out. Trust the process and follow your diet. This will work (I’m also trying to keep that in mind for next time when I stall 🙃)

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Checking in. I will be 2 weeks post op tomorrow. On Wednesday my surgeon cleared me to start soft food. I have been eating fish that I grill and I have been using my Instapot to pressure cook some things. I am not interested in puréed. I can live on apple sauce and fish for a long time. Weight loss has stopped at 30 pounds in 3 weeks which I am fine with. I haven’t lost much post op but I lost so much Pre-op I am not surprised. The Dermabond is finally starting to come off my incisions. No problems so far tolerating food. I am slowing sampling different things. I am avoiding sugar. I so far have nothing but positives to say about my experience. For me this isn’t about a number on a scale. This is about my health and I already feel more energetic and am not longer using my CPAP.
  16. I hope everything goes well next week for you I did have doubts the morning of surgery and when I got to the hospital the surgeon came and seen me and said that he needed someone else to do the surgery if he couldn't get anyone he couldn't do it so I thought if he doesn't do it I'm not coming back but he ho 10 minutes later he come back and said are you ready of course I said yep let's do it now I'm 12 weeks out and 45lbs down and glad I had it done

    This surgery is bullshit...

Sorry to hear things have been rough. Tracking calories does not work for me, I’ve learned from other eating plans that it makes me obsessive, and is not sustainable for me. Perhaps talking with a nutritionist about what you are eating each day might help? I follow the rules of 60 or more grams of protein each day, no added sugar, 5 g or less fat per serving, and eat until I am satisfied. No more. During the work week, I eat the same thing every day from breakfast until afternoon snack. Dinners are healthy and usually involve some form of chicken or turkey. I know this might not work for everyone, but it makes it easy for me and my weight loss has been great. Ultimately, each person is different, and what works for me and my program may not work best for you. I hope you find something that works for you, and allows you to use your new tool to the fullest!

There is a Baritastic app that is very easy to use to track your calories. You can scan items or manually add them. Super quick super easy just go to your App Store and search Baritastic you will find it. I’ve watched my 600 pound life and it seems that they do not loose weight or start to regain when they eat to high of calories or wrong food. Like mashed potatoes and gravy etc. remember high Protein low carb. (Maybe try watching a few episodes you glean a lot of insight and information from it) I would try to get in with your nutritionist after you have logged your food for a week if you still are not loosing. Remember the surgery is just a tool not a miracle! Good luck!
  19. I think I'm not supposed to have caffeine...my PCP told me (not my surgeon who SHOULD be the one telling me) that the caffeine can cause dehydration, (so makes sense when WLS patients commonly are dehydrated)...anyway, I'm about 3 months out and about a week ago reintroduced coffee back into my life - just one cup in the morning with a little vanilla premier protein. Y'all...I get the caffeine jitters just off one cup! I make sure to drink a full 20 oz. of water to make up for the possible dehydration. I had 2 cups this morning and I'm bouncing off the frickin walls! Sent from my SM-N976V using BariatricPal mobile app
  20. I see that too. I was put in it 5 weeks before surgery (I’m 12/22) it is so hard I did eat thanksgiving a little bit honestly didn’t really taste that good to me. I’m doing ok with the liquid but my husband keeps trying to feed me - he took me to Olive Garden Friday I got the Soup and salad only at the broth. It was so good but I got full fast and haven’t even had surgery yet. I think it’s just my stomach is used to liquids now idk. I’ll go on clear liquids a week before surgery.  My book given to me by the Drs office says it is to shrink the liver, reduce the chance of bleeding or blood clots and show the commitment to the program. I’m supposed to loose 20 pounds before then too and at the rate I am loosing shouldn’t be a problem.
  21. I've been reading that after the surgery, the patient will be weak and fatigued due to lack of nutrition as well as recuperation. I don't know if I can handle even more weeks of sub-human living after all the delays, pre-op stuff, and quarantines. Given that I have to quarantine for 2 weeks both before and after surgery, do 2 weeks of protein shakes and clear liquids only, and cold, crummy weather which prevents even outdoor activities, I'm already depressed after 6 months of delays getting surgery. I can't see friends or family, go to the gym, swim, garden, walk, or even be outside much due to weather. Ugh. Plus, Christmas and Thanksgiving are ruined for the second year in a row. I feel like a prisoner. Any ideas on how long the torture lasts after surgery?
  22. I had gastric sleeve surgery on July 21st. Over the first six weeks I lost 30lbs. I haven't lost a single pound since then..... My doctor keeps saying I need to keep my daily calorie intake to 800 or less to lose weight. I haven't been logging everything but I think I'm staying around that number... I'm not a very disciplined person so keeping track of that every day usually doesn't happen. I'm super frustrated and getting depressed over this. If I was able to lose weight by sticking to a very strict diet and exercise program I would have done that a long time ago and never had the surgery. I had a big part of my stomach removed for nothing.... Anybody else out there who can't lose weight even after weight loss surgery? I don't know what to do....

    Anyone for October 2020?

Hi Orchidlover Hopefully by now you've figured out how to get and stay back on track. How was Thanksgiving for you? I am also struggling and stopped losing, as a matter of fact I've gained a few pounds. I was in a really bad car accident in July which caused me to be home and not doing any exercising other than physical therapy. I have now restarted as of last week doing a little walking. I actually pushed myself yesterday to do a little more than walk slowly and I felt OK. I have been home since my accident. Prior to the accident I was losing but very slowly, I mean extremely slow. I still took it as a win cuz at least I want gaining. We have to take all our victory laps regardless. I especially do this because, I have been and still am dealing with back issues and being on steroids all the time didn't help me. I also have not been eating right lately. I find myself ALWAYS hungry and always snacking and not always on healthy stuff that'll be conducive to weightloss. We know what we're doing wrong, we have the tools to do what's right but we are so much in our heads when we get off track, it blocks us from clearly seeing those said tools that'll help us to get back where we know we can abs want to be. Let's start today by not doing the things we have been doing lately, whether it's eating badly or not exercising and making excuses why we're doing these things. Once we put our minds to doing it we can. you've done it before to be able to lose 100 pounds.. which is a huge deal, congrats on that. I have only lost a total of 58 pounds and that's over two surgeries. I have had major setbacks but I'm not giving up and I'm going to stop letting those things get in the way of my success to get to a 100lb loss. Fight for this, you got it and you know how to. Good luck.
  24. Honestly, we're living in a vegan renaissance, so there's a plant based alternative for almost everything these days. My best advice is to go in at a pace that's comfortable and don't beat yourself up if you can't quit it all at once. I'm a firm believer in doing what you can, and acknowledging that nothing is perfect. Think about what you know you'll really miss (for most people, that's cheese and/or bacon) and tackle that last. Not everyone can do cold turkey! There's so many dairy alternatives now that you can pick and choose to suit. I personally prefer soy and oat, and use protein fortified soy milk now that I'm post-op for the extra protein. And try different brands - one brand's soy/oat/almond might be delicious, while another is undrinkable! There are also excellent vegan cheese options these days. Miyoko's Creamery is a US brand and make good stuff, including a divine butter. I know you're in Florida, but you may have something similar to this near you: https://www.thespruceeats.com/vegan-cheese-5090419 Those Texas cheeses look good, and the article also lists other good plant cheeses in the US. Lots of yoghurt and other dairy options available now too. Meat! There's some vegan meat available now that are SO DAMN REAL that I actually feel sick when they're cooking they smell so realistic. Beyond and Impossible Burger both do freakishly beef-like beef, and Omni do pork. I would also urge you to hit up your local Chinese supermarket (I know you call it something else in the US ... grocer?) and check out their vegan meats because Chinese vegan companies work some kind of sorcery here. You'll find superb faux chicken, roast duck, char siu pork and even fish. They also have bacon, as do other western brands. If you have a Trader Joes or Wholefoods near you, I imagine you'll be spoiled for choice in their plant-based offerings! Eggs! Yeah... there's really no substitute here, sorry. Effort has been made, and you can get passable fried eggs, but a nice poached egg is and will likely remain unattainable. That said, a bangin' vegan scramble can be home made using well drained medium tofu crumbled, and flavoured with a little turmeric, black salt (important - kala namak is sulfurous so gives that eggy taste, but use sparingly!), dijon mustard and cracked pepper. Add mushrooms and spring onions for extra flavour. It's not a dupe for scrambled eggs, but it's tasty and a great protein rich breakfast. The other thing is: get excited about food, because there's new stuff coming out almost every other week! Vegans get ridiculously excited about food, I think because we remember the dark days, in the before-times, when all vegan food was punitive and we had to be content with bran muffins and sadness. Apologies for the novella, and I hope I helped!

    Water and Protein Intake

This is what I did as well. Those little 2oz bathroom paper cups were a lifesaver the first week. After that it got much easier.
