Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?

My band was removed in April and my sleeve is scheduled for August. I wonder if it's been long enough that I'm considered a revision. I've gained 20 pounds since the band removal so I wonder if my metabolism is normal again.
  2. My surgeon is Dr. Scarborough. I am revising from the band to the sleeve after 10 years with the lapband. When my band doc gave up his practice to go back to Israel, Dr. Scarborough and Dr. Yu took over the practice. So I've seen Dr. Scarborough a few times before making the decision to revise to the sleeve. I like Dr. Scarborough because he is VERY thorough. He has a very quiet bedside manner. But he will answer every question you have. I've not met Dr. Yu but I've heard good things about him also. For the most part, I'd give the staff good marks. As with anything this important, you will need to stay on top of things and make sure to followup. I guess I'd give the staff a 7-8 out of 10. The nutritionists are awesome. The person who scheduled my surgery date is awesome. Good Luck
  3. My insurance doesn't cover bariatric surgery. I was trying (not very successfully) to ask, in regards to this thread, is one considered a revision of it's been 3 years since the removal and, therefore, possibly slower weight loss? Or is a revision when you have band removed and sleeve surgery at the same time?
  4. Anyone have any thought or comments about my situation? Looking for some feedback. What I'm seeing is that the info my NUT gave me is not consistent with the #'s you all are using. For example. The amount of carbs v. Protein. I was told to keep carbs at or under 80 and protein at or above 60 for weight loss. Per item carb 6gm or lower, sugar 5gm or lower, otherwise don't touch it. Don't count calories but stay under 1000. I've been averaging 800-950 or so. Sometimes get to 1000. I would appreciate any feedback. Especially if anyone is dealing with taking large amounts of meds due to other conditions (4 back surgeries, chronic pain, nerve damage, chronic migraine, 4 jaw sx with instrumentation, hypothyroidism, depression) have had 13 surgeries since 2006 ????. It has not been easy and I am not esp open to the possibility of a revision to a RNY in the GERD does not get under control. Thanks.

Lap band removal after 10+ years

I've had my band 8yrs and just got approved for sleeve revision today. Is there anything I should look out for? Looking to get it done in early August.
  6. I had my band taken out in 2012 and scheduled for the sleeve on Aug 12. So you think I still qualify as a revision? I've gained all that I lost with the band and then another 50 or so.
  7. I got my revision approval about 3 hours ago! Pumped to get this taken care of.
  8. So......just wanted to ask as Im considering revising from my band to bypass. How many of you have experienced hair loss? And was it really bad? Does it grow back? If you are getting all your nutritional needs met after bypass why do you even loose your hair?

Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?

I'm 8 weeks out band to sleeve revised and yes weight loss is slow for me, however, I was also at a stand still with my weight loss right before they removed the band and actually gained some weight before removal. I think with any weight loss surgery, you come upon a halt in weight loss at a given time. After 100 lbs. loss with the lap band, I was stalled for months (plateau) I remember my lap band doctor saying that the band did all it was going to do and now it was up to me. What that meant I never questioned, but, hearing other people stories and frustrations, there seems to be truth to this. What throws me off mentally is that I work out rigorously 7 days a week - 40 minutes hard cardio and now 1/2 hour light strength training. With the band it was 60 minutes cardio only and did this for 2 years with results of being down 5 lbs and then up 5 lbs. Now, with the sleeve I'm down 3 lbs, then up 3 lbs. I've talked to a trainer whom tells me that I'm calorie deficient due to my rigorous workouts. If that is the issue, I just cannot get more food into me. If i eat small meals all day, then, I can't get my Water intake in and throws my digestive system off. I drink Protein shakes in-between meals, but, I am soooo tired of them! Maybe, getting a protein with higher calories? I see my doc in 3 weeks and will ask. On a more positive note, I'm not reporting that I met my short term goal of getting into a smaller pant size and shirt size. I went from a 36 waist to a very comfortable 34 waist and my shirts were Xlarge and now wear a comfortable Large, so, things are happening for me, but, darn it, I want the scale to show it!!!! I know men lose differently, but, the slow weight loss for revisions is very real for both sexes, yet, I read of others that were revised (men and women) that are very successful. I want to know their secret! jake

    Eating 8 days out?

I am out on Day 9. I also had a lapband ( I was banded in 2003) and was revised to the Sleeve. I am on 14 days of full liquids and then 2 weeks pureed food then 2 weeks of soft food, then on to real food...I hope! I don't think the doctor is strict I think it is smart. and I also did a 2 week pre op liquid diet. I am able since Day 6 to know drink up to 64 ozs of Water a day. and can drink about 6 to 8 ozs of liquid before I am full. I am wanting some real food, but also having been thru all of this before with my Lapband, I know it will come in time and no need to rush. But I am dreaming of the day I get to try a piece of steak....being I have not had steak , pork or white chicken meat in about 12 years! but I have waited this long, I can wait a little longer. be patient and give your body time to heal.
  11. I had my revision in one surgery on June 23, 2015. My surgery was a 1.5 hours long. Not hardly much pain stayed overnight and went home. I had trouble with complete exhaustion during liquid phase but I am passed that, but make sure you take a good multivitamin with iron and B12. I have lost 20 pounds in 2 weeks. At 2 weeks I am currently in Vegas where I walked 8 miles yesterday. You will definitely know when to stop eating.
  12. Im also a recent revision (6/23) band to bypass person. I also had barrett's. I am finally sleeping like a baby again. Reflux is gone! Best thing i did. 25 pounds down so far.

    Anyone in Missouri?

I am in Rolla. July 20 my revision date.
  14. Thanks for your sharing your thoughts Carolm1965! I have been in therapy a long time because of my own food issues. Not at the monent though but I feel that I´ve come a long way. I am at a much better place when it comes to my food issues compared to when I had the band 19 years ago. At that time I was quite young and very much in denial and totally unable to handle to psychologal issues of the whole thing. This is something I want to change this time around and I have decided to be totally open about med having the revision surgery to everyone and that food is a problematic area for me. Posting this post is also a a part of me preparing, I want to hear you other sweet eaters story so I can learn from them in my own process. Today I am still overweight (340 pounds to my 6´2.8 , was 410 when I had the band and has been so low as 245 a couple of years after the first surgery but since my wheight has crept upwards. This in part to me adressing my food issues (working on a good routine instead of dieting all the time) but also due to the techical issues with my band (ruptured staple lines) . The poorly functioning band makes it hard to maintain a healthy diet (difficulties to eat Fiber, meat etc but simple to eat carb rich sweet stuff). This is the major reason I want to change to GB, since I understand it its generallt easier to eat a more varied diet with that procedure. My worry now is that It will be hard to break the sugar habit if I´m among those who don´t get dumping syndrome. Any more sweet eaters out there who want to share their story? Both those with and those without the dumping syndrome are very welcome to post. Thanks!
  15. because I am revising from band to gastric bypass my doctor challenged me to find the secret calories in my diet. I took this challenge and started logging everything I put in my mouth and I found secret calories in a lot of food and portions. I lost 10 lbs during this last month. eating the same healthy food but weighing and logging.
  16. Hi! I´m about to get a revision from vertical gastric banding to gastric bypass in a couple of months. When I got the band my main food problem was regular food - Pasta, meats & junk food stuff. After a while with the band that changed and I went into slider foods likes sweets and ice cream instead. My band is not functioning now due to ruptured staple lines, a technical failure of the original operation method. (old, 19 years ago) My question now is what can i expect with the GB beeing a sweet eater. I know about dumping but also read that many GB-patients don´t get it at all. What is your experiences when it comes to this? If you didn´t get the dumping syndrome how did you go about to control the sweet cravings? Any tips on how to prepare or what to do to control it after the GB would be highly appreciated. Thanks - glad I found this place to be get some real knowledge before the surgery. That was a major shortage back in -96 with the first surgery - getting the peer input!
  17. I go in at 10a I'm having a revision from a lap band to a sleeve. I'm 5'5" highest wt:231 & June 8 @ 7a wt:221.4 W the band I lost 60lbs & gained it all back in less than 8months. Can't afford the back n forth to get filled & unfilled & having to pay for the fills n unfills. I can't live my life fill n unfill. Excited about this morning new chapter about to open up. Who's along for the ride?
  18. @startingoveryeyagain I can relate with how you feel. I have been overweight all my life plus I have hypothyroidism which makes my metabolism super slow. So no matter if I was a low eater, I exercised regularly, even with a trainer for over a year did not loose significant weight. I also had 4 low back surgeries that limited my exercise capability, 4 jaw surgeries that required a soft diet. So I researched the VSG v. Morphine pump which was recommended by my MD at the time since after all the sx I had gained up to 236 and I'm only 5'0. Had the VSG on 6/12/2012. Has a very difficult road to recovery, was very weak and in pain but did not have a problem with the diet initially. In phase 1 & 2 lost 25lbs. In phase 3 as I started to introduce solid foods the gastritis I had at the beginning of as came back. (Other co-morbidities HBP, diabetes, hypothyroidism, chronic back pain & chronic migrains). But it was violent GERD. I could not hold anything down. The MD ordered a Barrium swallow & X-Ray. I had developed a serious structure & Hernia. So I had a VSG revision with a hernia repair on 7/12/13. By this time I had lost about 65 lbs since the 1st sx. After the 2nd VSG I went down to 126. So I lost a total of 91 lbs until November of 2014 when the scale started to come up. I started to gain weight, I am baffled as to why. *I document EVERYTHING I EAT. I USE My Fitness Pal. *I weight my portions. *I am exercising at least 3x a week for 1.5hrs walk, bike, strength. *I am drinking about 50oz water daily. No juices, nothing else but water or milk. No alcohol. *I have my protein drink for breakfast. Have lunch, dinner and a small meal at night with meds. So having 4 meal a day. Per program on maintenance should have 5 small meals a day but can't fit all. *sometimes get hungry if I wait 6+ hours without eating. *my protein sources are usually 3oz chicken breast, lean hickory ham, 1 egg, cottage cheese, white cheese, milk. *I have 2 small fruits a day Per the guidelines. One green apple with no skin & one small peach with no skin. I eat it with white cheese to combine the carb & protein. That is a small meal. *when I have chicken I make a small salad with lettuce, tomatoes & carrots. I use thousand island dressing Per my guide that is 6gm carb, 5gm sugar. So I would appreciate if anyone takes the time to read my post, for someone who is 3 yrs post op with all I've been throughout, is it normal to gain weight? What I'm I doing wrong? My labs are ok. I spoke with the NUTshe sugg to drink a shake and doc all intake but I already do that. I am keeping my carbs at or under 80gms daily, protein 60-80gmgaily to loose per the NUT. She said don't count calories but stay under 1000. Which I'm usually between 800-900. My other MD's day it's too little. So, someone out there please HELP ME I NEED TO START TO LOOSE WEIGHT AGAIN. MY GOAL IS TO LOOSE 30 MORE LBS.????

    Had my surgery today!

@@hubbark1 5 pounds a month with the band is about what I lost. I did lose 105 pounds with the band and I felt great for a couple of years. Then I got sick with acid reflux and it was because my band slipped. I did revision surgery and it slipped again. I got the band removed at that time and I gained all my weight back and then some. I'm happy I was able to get the bypass now. I'm 9 weeks out now and I've lost 43 pounds. I feel like it's slower than others and I have to be careful because I don't feel restriction like others say they have. All in all I'm thankful and blessed! I don't want to sit and complain. Good luck to you!
  20. I had my revision surgery on 6/30 from band to RNY. I was banded in 2005. I lost 100 lbs and kept off about 85. Then started having reflux, ulcers, and gastritis. Through an EGD the doctor found the band was partially obstructed. Before band, I was 450lbs so I was no where near goal. Finally made the decision and found the right doctor for revision. So here I am, 8 days post op. I feel so different this time! So motivated and following all instructions to a "t". Just looking for support to stay that way. I'm determined not to hide this time. Anxiety kept me from going groups last time or even looking for support. I still felt I was not "good" enough or didn't "fit." Having a buddy (or several!) I think will really help!!! Would love to hear from someone!
  21. I am a revision from band to RNY. I just had my surgery on 6/30. So far so good!
  22. Hi: I am pre-op. If my insurance approves my surgery (BCBS of AL) I will most likely get a surgery date in Sept. My BMI is 42 now, but my insurance requires a BMI of 35 plus co-morbidities for 3 years or 40+ for 3 years. My BMI has not been high enough long enough, however I have been on a CPAP for 5 years. BCBS of AL says that the results of your sleep study must be "severe sleep apnea" my results 5 years ago were moderate, but my BMI was 33 not 42. I was also required to do the 6 mo. check ins with my PCP BUT my question is not about coverage. I am struggling with which surgery to choose. I am hoping that someone out there might be able to provide a bit of guidance. I have struggled with compulsive eating for most of my life, like so many I have tried EVERY diet out there. I have lost and regained 100s of pounds. I am very educated about nutrition. I have also invested a lot of time in therapy to address the compulsive overeating. I am leaning toward the bypass because it has been around for so long and because the dumping seems like it might be a tool for me (please let me know your thoughts). I am drawn to sweets and carbs when I am under stress. However, the sleeve is less invasive and it might be nice to be able to take NSAIDs when I am older - if arthritis etc. is an issue. I have a family history of GERD and Barrett's esophagus - another reason that I am leaning toward the bypass. I am a mother of 3 and again, like so many, I am afraid that by choosing the bypass I am choosing a riskier surgery. However, I want this surgery to be successful, and I want to avoid revision. I am a very compliant patient. I am not especially worried about giving up certain foods etc. I just want to get healthy and active and to be really present in my own life and in the lives of my husband and family. Thanks!
  23. The risk of leaks is 2x as high in revision patients. 2 separate procedures minimizes that risk.

    June 2015 sleevers

I was a band to sleeve revision June 1st. I've lost 22 lbs so far. Weight loss has stalled out. I feel like I'm not eating enough and my body is protesting. I had one day last week where I ate 1100 calories and I dropped a pound. This week I'm trying to eat more Protein and see what happens.

    band bulge

That's your port you're feeling...not the band. My port also sticks out like B-52's does. It won't after September though. I'm revising to a lower profile port and the surgeon is stitching it to the muscle to tuck it in further. It shows when I wear certain items of clothing and it bothers me when I wear a belt. Good luck @WoodenHearts. You'll do fine..it's early in your journey and you still have to get a handle on living the banded life. Once you do, all will be well.
