  1. I would try substituting healthier options for your current ones. Try drinking Water instead of diet coke. Or crystal light. Maybe try herbal tea instead of coffee. I found that it wasn't the caffeine I needed in the morning, I just liked a hot drink. It's not easy, and I agree with everyone else, you can't change them all at once. But boosting your water intake and going to the gym regularly are so important post surgery and getting in the habit now will make it a much easier transition. As for sugars, now could be a good time to start checking out healthier sweet tooth foods. sugar free Popsicles are a favorite of mine, and sugar free pudding. I also found healthy choice makes 100 calorie frozen greek yogurts (little bit higher in sugar and carbs than my normal foods, but everyone needs a treat once in awhile!). Most important thing I found pre-surgery is record everything!!! Journal what time you eat and how much. Record how much water you're drinking, and how much you exercise. It can be really helpful to look back and reflect on what you did good and what you can improve on. Good luck!!! You can do this
  2. I wouldn't worry that you're eating too much, you are eating small portions and healthy foods, that's what matters most. All doctors and nuts are different but mine has me on 3 meals and 2 snacks a day. One meal us my breakfast protein shake. 1/2c yogurt for morning snack, 1/2c food at lunch, usually a cheese stick or a couple veggies with hummus for afternoon snack, then 1/2c to 3/4c food for dinner. Sometimes I'll have fruit or a sugar free popsicle or something in evening. Even with eating all that my caloric intake is usually somewhere between 550-800 a day which is definitly not alot. If you're eating healthy, taking small bites and eating small portions you are doing great . As for hunger, make sure you're getting all your water in. That cab make a big difference

When I could introduce solids I was told to start with just proteins like yogurt, milk, ground white meats, eggs, and protein shakes.

    Full Liquids

Hi! So glad you are here!!!! I had surgery July 30th, 2 days ago I was able to drink 64oz of liquids. I'm planning on start tomorrow on the full liquid diet. I need a little guidance Greek yogurt and cottage cheese are allowed? I make my own chicken broth with veggies, can I process it with little chicken and add more liquid for this phase? also should I add unflavored Protein to it? thank you!!!
  5. After meeting with anesthesiology I met with the surgeon's assistant. She answered all my questions. I'll be in the hospital one night unless there are complications. I made my 2 week follow up with her and the NUT. After that I had lunch and went on a two mile walk. Then I met with the sleep doc. She told me that they consider severe sleep apnea anything over 30 episodes in an hour of not getting enough air/oxygen and I had 57 on average an hour per my sleep test! No wonder I was so tired. With the machine I'm averaging 2.8 an hour....anything under 5 an hour they consider no apnea. She also said that she thinks once I lose the weight I won't need the machine anymore and I will get retested again in six months. Final appointment was with the NUT. He was training another dietician who was very nice. I can go on their "Stage 3" diet when I'm released from the hospital which consists of all the liquids in the first two stages plus yogurt (no fruit pieces), small curd cottage cheese (blech! ????), cream of wheat, SF pudding, custard, strained or puréed cream soup etc. I'll be on that for two weeks and then progress to Stage 4 puréed. It was a long day but so worth it. Hope everyone is doing well!

@@reallyrosy This is a brand called FairLife. It comes in skim to whole and has a lot of Protein. Google it. I still haven't tried the Kefir yogurt. Wish it came in a smaller container. Passed all 4 visits required for Medicare. They are submitting for coverage. They said it will take 2-3 weeks to get that back, then they will schedule the esophageial (sp) test (and I'll do the colonoscopy at the same time), THEN finally schedule surgery. I'm still hoping for the end of Sept.
  7. Something you might want to try is to start using myfitnesspal. It is an online site (has a phone app as well) that you can track all of your daily food. You can friend others and view their diaries. I have done this over the past few months to get ideas as to what others are eating. It has helped when I am looking for something new to try. I may not even think of it until I see it on somebody else's diary. It still pretty much do 3 meals and 3 Snacks a day. My breakfast might be one egg and one breakfast turkey sausage link. My lunch might be a small Wendy's chili. dinner might be a small muffin size mini meatloaf and 1/4 cup green Beans. Snacks are yogurt, nuts, cheese, fruit. My fav is a mixture of yogurt, fruit, nuts and seeds.

Earlier on I was also having the protein soups from wonderslim brand bariatricchoice.com and other sites sell it. but I prefer the puddings. I am 23 days post op today. Have lost 24.6 pounds since day 1 of pre-op low carb diet. The last 2 weeks I haven't lost a pound. . But dr says it completely normal and to be expected. The liver is "filling" back up and it takes time, and it's heavier (glycogen) so that's why the stall. Phew... Protein shakes is what nutritionist said I should be getting most of my protein from still at this stage. And not to worry about tracking calories/carbs etc... Just to take it slow and give time to heal. Sick sick sick of the shakes. But have gone too fast or too soon with certain things and Had a few dumping episodes.... Not fun!!! My stages were: PO Days 1-2: clear liquid only Days: 3-9: Full Liquids - including strained soups, thinned yogurt etc... Days 10-16: Pureed Foods - anything that is basically blended - with no chunks/pieces. Start vitamins Days 17-30: Mechanical Soft - Mushy. Tuna/egg salad, ground meats in sauces, toasted bread, deli meats, cooked veggies. Days 31+: Regular foods Sharp Pain: yes. First week it was the larger lower incision that was tender, sharp pings and felt like it pulled. Went away and was fine. But on day 15 I started to get a diff pain on my right side only when I laid on my left side or moved just right. It was odd... Dr said it sounded like tissue healing etc... Some thought gallbladder, but it's gotten better. ½-¾ cup I believe. Haven't really measured. Depends on what I'm trying to eat.

am am 3 weeks out. I have yogurt, blueberries, well chewed chicken (roasted), scrambled egg well chewed, protein shakes and protein puddings. I don't get in all my water but at least 48 ounces (not counting any shakes). I have started to avoid the shakes and eat more of the foods mentioned because I am getting my protein 60g+ that way and feeling fuller than on shakes. I also eat alot of sugar free popcicles and jello when I want to snack (head hunger) so that I am getting few calories and filling up. I feel like I can eat more than alot of you guys mention but I think maybe that is because I am smaller in general pre surgery 166 and surgery 155 (but I was a revision from a slipped lap band). I am really concentrating on protein protein protein and chew chew chew and sip sip sip. Doing pretty great I think as far as following that and staying low in calories and carbs. I just want this stall to end so I can feel some progress in the flesh. But I went through too much to give up. I also feel I need to walk more but that is difficult with my time and schedule. I get 7000 steps (whatever that means) generally each day.

Oh I feel so much better reading your post. I have lost about the same since pre op, only 10 post op and stalled for 2 weeks. I have tracked everything and eaten less than 1000 cals every day. Last two days I didn't do protein shakes and I got 60 grams of protein from food, soft foods. I felt more full that way and actually had less cals since my shakes were adding more calories than I could eat. But that stall is so frustrating. I was like wth, am I failing. My body refuses to lose? Did he say when you might see some loss of weight again? I am 23 days post op today. Have lost 24.6 pounds since day 1 of pre-op low carb diet. Disney World!

You will be just fine!!! I'm 6 weeks out and could totally do a Disney vacation now. Just keep up with your Water with all the walking you'll be doing. Disney is also fantastic about having healthy options available as far as food but they're also great about allowing outside food to be brought in - so pack a cooler bag with string cheese, yogurt, etc. Jealous!! Have fun!!!
  13. I plan to use my band for portion control and to stop eating before I'm full. Meanwhile I want to use the knowledge that I was giving from several nutritionist and try to eat three meals and to small snacks. And when I say meals I'm supposed to eat a half a cup so I'm probably going to only eat a third a cup. And my snack is going to consist of some type of protein whether it's the serving of cheese, yogurt or protein bar. That way I don't go over my calories but I do keep my metabolism boosted. I'm going to see if that works for me and if it doesn't then I will try something else.

    Hello all! Newbie!

When you're just out of surgery it is really challenging to get enough protein in, especially if things are bothering your stomach. I know that I had to resort to oatmeal and beans and watered down juice just to get by, and I lost almost 100 pounds just fine. Don't freak out and be too hard on yourself. It's super important to follow your NUT guidelines, but eating some carbs in the beginning isn't going to kill you and might be a necessary evil to getting by. I also don't love meat and supplement with tofu, beans, and yogurt. Hang in there!

  17. Hi guys! I was sleeved a week ago today. Im so confused about what my body signals are now. The gas has died down (thank the lord) and I am feeling some hunger - typically when I wake up and if I accidentally go a long time without anything in my belly. How much should I be eating? I averaged 500 calories this week until today, when I worked really hard to get in a breakfast protein shake ( took 2.5 hours!), a 6 oz yogurt (split between lunch/snack), 4 oz. of cream soup for dinner and a pudding for snack. That seems like so much! My doc said yesterday that my stomach is 4.5-6 oz, but how do I know if I'm eating too soon inbetween meals? Or if it's too much? I was losing 2 pounds a day until yesterday so I thought if I bumped up my calories a little it might nudge my weight quicker. But I'm so confused. ????

Strange Info from NUT re: Carbs

Maybe that is the reason the original posters NUT says higher carbs... yogurt, dairy and protien shakes and bars all have fiber in them...which subtracts from carbs to "net carbs" just tossing an idea out there http://healthyeating.sfgate.com/subtract-dietary-fiber-carb-count-11020.html
  19. Have you ever looked at the blog / website - http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/? She has a lot of great recipes and most of her blog is all about "a day in her pouch" so that will give you a great idea of some meals. I am only 9 weeks out and have had some issues with meat, so I am not a great example as I am still staying with pureed mostly. For Breakfast I generally have 1/2 container of yogurt mixed with 1/2 scoop of Protein powder, then a shake for mid-morning snack. At lunch, about 1/2 ounce deli turkey and a string cheese and maybe 1 cracker. And dinner similar or pimento cheese with extra Protein Powder (its a Southern thing if you haven't heard of it) and/or hummus. I had tilapia and butternut squash last night but a very tiny tiny amount. Eating out, I have pretty much only ventured into tortilla soup (without tortilla strips) and I even had some guacamole a couple of times (it was just mashed avocado, onion and lime juice but luckily the raw onion didn't bother me). The thing is it is different for everyone. Some can tolerate certain things that others can't so it is tough to say what you will or won't be able to eat. Rest assured though you will find your new normal eventually (or so I am told) and will be able to enjoy small amounts of food that you want to eat.

    Shots?

I had 10 days of self-administered shots post op.. As mentioned, they were to assist with not clotting. I just did it at the same time as I took my liquid vitamins and ate my yogurt.. Ahhhh, those were the days...
  21. I had bypass and my surgeon was out of town at first follow up so I saw her partner and she said I had to wait until day 15 to have pureed. Seems every doctor is different and it could be due to your individual circumstances. I think I would err on the side of caution and stick with liquids for another week if you can stand it. it won't hurt as long as you are getting in your Protein. I know that last week is tough. You might look at your booklet again and see if there are any more suggestions of what you can have this last week. Cream Soups? Yogurt? I had popsicles - a lot of them. The cold didn't bother me (luckily). I also (and don't judge me here) had pickle juice. It was great! I wanted the salt and it really helped plus it is used for hydration by some athletes, so I figured hydration couldn't be bad. Not much of it and not all day but it was a good salty taste for a break from the sweetness. Good luck! Hang in there. You are almost there!

Well all of the Soups were fine. I tried cream of mushroom, cream of chicken and mushroom, french onion (all cambpells) I blended it then strained it. but puree, I tried chicked salad (I put canned chicken, plain greek yogurt, sour cream, some seasoning and chicken broth in a food processor and blended till it was smoothe) then I tried ricotta bake, wendy's chli ran through my food processor, and refried Beans. all except the refried beans has made my stomach ache and spasm. even vanilla greek yogurt make me ache and spasm just not as bad. I had refried beans from a mexican restaurant and they were fine but when I made them from a can they hurt lol. nothing too bad, but i feel bad a few hours after eating. Im ussually only eating a 1/2 cup

For me, if I want something sweet, fresh fruit, yogurt, protein shakes, protein bars, etc. are good options.

    June 2015 sleevers

At 6 weeks, my doc moved me from 700 calories to 1000 a day. I usually get around 900, pretty easily. Protein shake for breakfast, chicken and green veggies for lunch with a piece of cheese, yogurt for a snack, meat and veg for dinner and then hot tea with cream for evening snack. It all adds up to roughly 900/day.
  25. Well I am 4 weeks out. Can't get my Water in. Run/Walking daily, hired a personal trainer that I start on the 17th. But would love to know what I am doing is right and food ideas. The yogurt and shakes are getting old already but not much else seems to go down well so feeling slightly stuck. Thanks for the help!
