    Liquid post-op diet sucks

It’s because it causes you to swallow air, so it gives you terrible gas. Same idea as straws. HW: 311 SW: 255 VSG 5/10/18 CW: 236 First goal weight: 209 Second goal weight: 191 lbs Third goal weight: 159 lbs Final Goal weight: 142 lbs 5’6” 34 yo female in NC

    I did what!!??

YES - you can reel this in quickly, before 19 pounds turns into 90 pounds Before my surgery, I told my doctor that maybe I'd have the band removed. once I'd lost all my weight. He told me that most start to gain under those circumstances. JUST like you said, we get used to banded life, and don't really realize how much a part of us it becomes. Out comes the band, and out comes the food beast within - AACK!!! All I can say is, catch this while you can. We all know how quickly we can gain all of our weight back, once we let go of the reins

Ask The Person Below A Question, Answer The One Above.

I will turn the age that rhymes with "nifty" in June. I homeschool our 11 year old Aspie which is not what I thought I'd be doing, but it's all good. I moved out from my parents' house at 16 and went wild, then went back to school and became an opera singer. Did that for several years and married my sweetie who joined the Navy when he was 30. We've been married 21 yrs. We have lived in London, San Fransisco bay area, Maryland and Virginia before returning to Texas when hubby got out of the service. After opera life (which allowed me to travel a lot), I went into Marketing and worked full time til my son was born. I then had my own small business teaching music and movement to pre-schoolers for several years but got burned out, especially physically. Now, we have a crazy bloodhound named Murray. Our parents require a lot of help these days and it is a priviledge to help them where we can. My son and I do tons of field trips and outings. We also love movies, bicycling and swimming. I have yo-yo'd weight wise all my life and it has taken its toll in more ways than one. I was sleeved 10-17-11 and have lost 62 lbs including the 10 dropped pre-op. I love, love, love the support on VST and check in almost every day. My restrictiin has recently decreased and appetite has increased but I am trying to undereat my sleeve. Some dsays are better than others, as we all know. My question for next poster is: if you could shrink to only two inches tall for 24 hours and could "fit" anywhere, where would you go and why?
  5. It's now come to this: after months of nutrition classes, doctors appointments, and a psychiatric evaluation, I will be having a sleeve gastrectomy tomorrow. As I sit writing this I am both excited and a little nervous. I know what it's like to be put to sleep because I had my tonsils and adenoids taken out when I was seven, but still, this is major surgery and I've not surgery for a long time. I'm having this done at a young age (I'm 19) because I have a bad family history when it comes to heart problems, blood pressure, diabetes, and so on. I'd like to avoid all that. I also don't know what it's like to be thin, so that prospect alone excites me about having the surgery. As of today, I have lost 133 pounds pre-op, but I want to lose about 140 more or so (the BMI calculator says I should be 150-160). The hospital I'm going to is very nice and I have a great surgeon and nutritionist. I do have to stay for two nights, but that's ok, though I kinda wish I could go home the same day. I hope I get a private room. My surgery is scheduled for 7AM and I'm the first of three surgeries my surgeon is doing that day - one sleeve and two bypasses. He told me he's done seven sleeves, so I'll be his eighth. This doesn't scare me though, as he's done countless bands and bypasses, as well as many revisions (he told me he had recently worked on a woman who had her stomach stapled back in the 1980's). He did tell me he had leaks in two but that was because he was using a different type of staple. The hospital has wi-fi and will let me have my cellphone so I won't be disconnected from the world. I've read so much on this site and know what to expect, so I'm ready. I'm hoping my age and the fact I've been exercising for several months keeps the pain and soreness at a minimum. You guys are great, I love this site, I'll try to post more, and look for me in the chatroom that night, as I'll try to be in it (if I'm not too out of it!) Well, I think it's time for this train to load up and await his departure for a whole new station
  6. For the first time, about 100 days post-op, I got stuck. I felt like my head was going to explode. What a horrible feeling! I went on a Monday for my monthly check up. Not much weight loss, but I haven't been able to get much exercise in, due to working more hours, lack of sleep, all the culprits. So my surgeon gave me another cc. At my count, that would make me at 6 cc's total, in a 10 cc band. He told me if it felt too tight to call him asap. I had no issues the rest of the day, overnight at work, or the next morning. Then we stopped for pizza. The breadsticks got me! Darn the bread! I've not had any issues with ANY food, post-op. None at all. Let me tell you..... For those who have never been stuck, you don't want to have to go thru it! It's very scary when you can't even swallow your own saliva. And to force myself to vomit? OMG. Lesson learned! I'm swearing off breadsticks, and any other bread if it's just that. If there's sauce for dipping, I may (hesitantly) give it another go, but I'm not sure. I'm gonna give it another week and see how I do. If it happens again, I'm gonna call my surgeon to see if maybe he can take half a cc out. I *never EVER* want to feel that again..... It. Was. Awful. Sorry, I'm not trying to scare anyone, but reality is reality. Small bites, limit very dry/sticky foods, and chew chew chew!!!!!!!!!
  7. Bottomline...she has to make that decision. You need to support her process for reaching it no matter what she chooses. If you can't support that...then I say the marriage has more problems that weight issues. My husband is 56 years old, 6'4", 360 pounds, diabetic, and has had 4 heart attacks in the past 10 years. All of his docs and myself have suggested strongly that he get the bypass. He is scared of the surgery. PERIOD. I don't give him long lists of why it would be good for him. He has a 180 IQ. He's scared, and until he can deal with that...it is what it is. All I say to him is, " look at me". He's very happy that I'm losing and feeling healthy and wants that too. But that doesn't take away the fear. I love him. I support him in any decision he deems right for him. I take care of myself and I don't contribute to his bad eating habits. I love him and when the time is right...he will do what needs to be done. Until then I just love him and treasure him for as long as I can. You know what they say, " You can lead a horse to Water...."

If I knew then What I know Now!!!

    1. Don't worry about losing weight after the first surgery pounds fall off. It usually takes three months and several fills after surgery for the physician to fill the band enough such that it gives you really great restriction. Many people lose 20 lbs right after surgery, and put back on 5 or 10 lbs before the band has been filled enough. Those pounds will definately come off again. 2. Stay away from alcoholic beverages, they are enjoyable and a source of comfort, but it will significantly slow your weight gain. 3. I can no longer enjoy a beer. The carbonation is such that it prevents me from eating anything on my plate. 4. Don't view the lap band as the magic band. You still have to help it work by changing some bad habits. Here are my bad habits: alcoholic beverages, popcorn and eating while watching the television. The lap band does not prohibit my intake of either alcohol or popcorn (for that matter, anything that is crispy and crunchy I can still consume in large quantities). Therefore, I must keep the beverages and popcorn out of my house. The lap band does not prevent me from watching television. in summary, if you had bad behaviors before the lap band, you will have bad behaviors after the lap band. 5. The lap band does work!! Even if you are a horrible cheater like me. While my weight loss is not as fast as I want, I have pretty much done everything to cheat it, but I have still lost weight, and am not gaining it. Want to know anymore?

How Long Does It Take To Get The Surgery?

Almost 160 pounds in 10 months
  10. mina

    Where do I start?

i haven't had the surgery myself, i'm in the begining stages. my story is similar to yours except for the medical problems. i've been obese all my life and never had any surgery except for dental. i'm an ob/gyn and do surgeries all the time. there are no guarantees in anything, for the most part the complication rates are minimal. one of the keys is making sure your surgeon has enough experience (make sure he or she is a bariatric surgeon), don't be afraid to ask for his complication rate. first find out if your insurance covers bariatric surgery and what their requirements are. then find a bariatric surgeon. they will guide you from there. my insurance requires me to lose weight (10%) first and since i don't have any comorbidities i'm don't know if i will get approve. if not i am heading to mexico (it's going to cost about the same as my copay for surgery here anyway), that's how serious i'm about being at a healthier weight and prevent my family's medical problem from becoming my own. weight loss has been shown to significantly improve morbidity/mortality. you may end up having to take less pills everyday for blood pressure and even require none at all. good luck with everything.

    August 10th! Anyone else?

Thingirlinsideme: thank you for the encouragement. Going fishing in the boundary waters of Minnesota last week of July. I am on medicine for an ulcer and need clearance from doing an upper GI on August 5 th. hope to have surgery right after. Maybe August 10 th haha
  12. I feel much better after my surgery. No more knee pain, no more back pain. I am down a total of 80 lbs since my highest weight (February 2017), Surgery date I was down 40 lbs (9/25/2017). Since surgery 2 months ago I have lost 40 lbs (12/6/2017). It is a big decision, one that I am 100% happy I did. I thought about doing WLS surgery about 10 years ago, it would have been the LapBand, I am glad I procrastinated, as now we know more about the LapBand high % of failure. The good thing about the sleeve is, it does not have a single point of blockage, with a full size stomach beyond it. It is a much better design.

    Banded today - 2/15/08

:crying:Hi, There has been some kind of error , I am receiving e-mail notifications that sounds like I have already had surgery. I am not due to be banded until 10 March 2008. I think you all are intending your post to go to Happy one, subject -banded today . I am trying to find out all info on what to expect and any other tips I can get. Any and all info would be appreciated. I have a lot of co morbidities such as sleep apnea, diabetes, high blood pressure, high colesterol, I have to sleep with oxygen. I would like to get a life back. I still work but it is getting harder every day. I have been trying to get to where I am at for 1 and 1/2 years. Every corner I turned I had to have some more test done. I feel as if I have had a very thorough going over. Now that the time is getting closer I am anxious but nervous. how about you people that have already been through this. Any comments on your experiences from recovery to food tips.
  14. Can you order via Amazon or Bodybuilding.com? Lots of great choices there. Do you have GNC stores? Lean 25 is a good choice there. While a specific brand may not be available to you, look for: whey Protein (preferably in isolate form), at least 20-30 grams per serving, low in sugar (under 10 grams per serving if possible) and avoid brands with collagen. This applies to powders or ready to drink shakes. Good luck.

    Picky eater

its scary, but scarier to remain obese (for me). i knew i was facing an early death if i didnt do something drastic very quickly. everyone here, who wants to be successful, has to change how he or she eats. very dramatically. those who are able to stick with the changes long term have success. those who dont regain and end up back where they started. its a choice. thats where the big girl panties come in. you get to make your mind up each day if you want to be successful at this or not. my H LOVED his processed carbs and sugar more than life itself. bagels, Cookies, pizza, Pasta, soda pop, candy, donuts, pop tarts, tortillas, burgers on buns... it was all he lived for! ... then after 10 years of doctor visits... specialists, meds, tests, allergy diets, etc... he finally made up his mind that yes, wheat was making him sick and he was going to stop eating it. its been a long struggle over the last year, but he's doing much better and doest miss everything as much as he thought he would. if he can do it, anyone can, cause i never saw anyone so devoted to certain foods... it was like they were his best friends he needed to visit every day! look on amazon, i bet there are some good books there on overcoming pickiness and making dietary changes.

Getting nervous due to all the comments I am hearing

Perfectly normal to hear all those things and feel what you're feeling. "...dont do that your not that fat" What does the guy staring back at you in the mirror say? He's the one you have to make happy and answer to each morning. "...your not gonna qualify" The person that said this knows this how? "...just put some time in at the gym" If it were that simple doctors wouldn't be doing this surgery. One of the first questions I was asked by my surgeon was if I had tried to lose weight before and how did I go about it. Going to the gym was one of my answers, and I did lose weight, only to put it all back on and more. "people die from this surgery" Unfortunately, this is truth. There are stories of this on Bariatric Pal. i was aware that people died from the surgery when i went on the table. It was worth it for me. "but I have other medical issued ( high b/p., back issues) that made me make this descion." Me too. High blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, couldn't sleep flat on a bed for > 10 years. I can go on. "I am also starting to get nervous due to being put to sleep. " Have you never been put under before? All worrying does is waste your time and energy. Most people have have had this surgery. It hasn't been easy for all of them but I'm sure most would agree it was worth it.

    The Journey Begins!

No longer 300 lbs !!!!!! The 1st time in over 10 years under 300 lbs
  18. I am about 10 days post op. I was concerned that I would not make it this far because the thought of drinking smelly yukky whey Protein made me gag. I tried a few ready to drinks (RTDs) and while pretty sweet, knew I could suffer through with them. After lots of posts discussing what works best or what preferences for protein were, I order the large canister of the Fuzzy Navel flavor (2#), and a small can (1#) of the unflavored Protein powder off of Amazon...it cost just under $50 and was free shipping through vitacost. I mix two scoops of the fuzzy navel with 4 cups of Water, and refrigerate overnite, pour over ice the next day and get 46 g of protein in, AND added water. I have used the unflavored which is 10g per smaller scoop, and added to creamed Soups and SF Jello. It will clump if too hot so, I added to jello after I added the water/ice cube speed set and there is no change to flavor or consistency. Jello is just not clear. I was able to put two scoops, for 20 g of protein to a small box of sf jello. With the Soup, I added it to the soup and heated in microwave.... as I was only eating about 1/4 c at a time, it was okay at first, but with each successive heating, it became more clumpy. Still, the unflavored does not at smell or texture or flavor, and will be a bonus when I get to the point that I can have pureed and soft foods. I am certain that this is repeat information, but, it was such a concern for me, and now, such a relief. Oh, I purchased an ice tea/lemonade flavor today at the Vitamin shoppe, and the canister was $39.99 so just a bit more than Amazon. It was a new product for them there. I supplement with Premier Protein ready to drink vanilla, and Muscle Milk chocolate. Crazy sweet, and will be looking at diluting with banana, milk and ice cubes plus other methods in the future.

Lapband in mexico-pls lemme know ur experience

I am 230lbs. 5'7. I have been struggling with this weight loss battle for 10 long years. I've spent so much money, time and effort to loss 20-30lbs. just to gain all the weight back in 30 days or so. I was recently denied by my insurance carrier at the beginning of Feb. I went into a major depression until I researched surgeries in Mexico. My family and friends think I've lost my mind. I have no support and my husband is totally against my decision. But I know that I have to do this for myself to end this cycle of depression and food addiction. Any encouragement would be great...Thanks:smile:
  20. You look amazing. In 10 weeks you have lost a lot. Tomorrow I will be at 6 weeks and is only 21 pounds down!

To puke or not to puke...

My meals are planned at least a day in advance so I never find myself standing in front of the fridge wondering what to eat when nothing sounds good. I don't go there since I may not want what I planned, but I certainly enjoy it when I'm sitting down and eating it. I always measure out the amount of food I know I should be eating. I never just eyeball it. I never go back for seconds. I also bought myself a special plate for my meals. It's smaller than my china plates so I don't get this visual of "OMG...a rabbit couldn't live on that" feeling. My 10" plate is the perfect size to hold my food *and* give a visual satisfaction. .
  22. Alex, I was confused about the programs. I have the home version and not the online version as well. I love that you can put the actually contents into the program. The online version you can't, I think that is one of the things he was referring to. Some people won't know that you can and should include every ingredient in what you eat down to the salt and pepper. LOL!! The "50" items were a general comment. He wasn't implying that everyone only eats 50 items he said most times we can only come up with 50 and of that we can only remember on average 10 of those 50. So use that as a general statement and not literal. Tuna is a food item Mayo is separate That is my understanding anyway.

    Had my first fill today

Got my first fill today (4-15) - 6 weeks post surgery. I was also very nervous, but even with a bit of prodding around, it only took about 30 seconds. I got 2.5cc in a 10 cc. My doctor said that I should lose around 1-2 pounds/week. If you do the math - that is approx. 60-100 pounds in a year!!! He also said that people usually find their "sweet spot" at around 7cc. Next fill is in 6 weeks. liquids tonigh and tomorrow, mushies for a day, and then soft for another. Excited to see if I got any restriction. Surgery 3-5-10 350lb Current 4-15-10 320lb
  25. I need a little guidance with what to eat everyday. I was banded on 2/4/10 and I've lost 38lbs, but the last 3 weeks I have been stuck! Help! Suggestions please.
