Signs and Symptoms of Lap Band Slippage

While the lap band (adjustable gastric band surgery) is not as common as it once was, many people battling obesity are still successfully using it as a tool for considerable weight loss and eventual weight management. Slippage is most commonly due to eating too quickly resulting in stomach bloat. Other contributing factors can include vomiting, overeating and even drinking too many carbonated beverages. All of these issues can cause the band to move as a result of over-extension (bloating) of the stomach. Gastric Lap Band Slippage Signs: Food Consumption Changes You may notice a decrease in appetite, being able to eat more than usual, or experiencing an unexplained discomfort during and after eating. Nausea or Vomiting When the band on your stomach slips, it can be difficult for food to pass through. This may make it feel like there is food trapped in your prolapsed stomach. This sensation can cause your body to want to expel that trapped food, leading to vomiting. Acid Reflux Feeling heartburn-like symptoms is a sign that your stomach acids are coming back up your throat from the stomach (esophagus). This can lead to chest pain, bloating, burping, hiccups that won’t stop, and other GI discomfort. Abdominal Pain Some patients with gastric banding slippage have told me they just feel like “something isn’t right” in their stomachs. They are able to complete normal daily tasks but don’t feel close to normal. “I Think I’m Experiencing Lap Band Slippage” If your lap band moves out of place, your lap band surgeon will need to make an adjustment as quickly as possible in order to relieve symptoms so you can resume losing weight. If it’s only a mild slip, your surgeon may be able to deflate the band so that it can re-adjust. However, moderate and severe band slips will typically require a laparoscopic surgical procedure to replace the band or remove it if further complications are present. If you notice any signs or symptoms of what you think could be a lap band slip, you should contact your surgeon right away. Even if you think you’re showing all the signs, only your weight loss surgery doctor will be able to tell you for sure. What if I’m Ready to Replace my Gastric Band with Another Bariatric Procedure? Changing from one bariatric procedure to another is called revision bariatric surgery. For some people, gastric banding, and the ongoing need for office visits and adjustments, no longer fits their lifestyle. Or, they did not achieve the overall weight loss goal they had hoped. Since the lap band’s initial popularity some years ago, the sleeve gastrectomy (“the sleeve”) has become the most popular bariatric weight loss surgery operation. For others, gastric bypass bariatric surgery is the right procedure. If your lap band needs to be removed, by choice or as a result of a complication, a qualified bariatric surgeon can go over other weight loss surgery options with you. There may be another procedure that will work better for you and help achieve your ultimate weight loss goals.

    June 2007 Bandsters

Hi all. Bigbaby you look so great! Suzz I'm sorry you're having a bad time. Java, I'm listening to your story of your troubles and you going back under the "knife". I read this when you wrote it but hadn't replied. This last week, I had a close call. I had closed off completely not able to swallow liquids. Finally after 10 pounds of Fluid loss, and feeling like I could pass out, I went in for a "slight unfill" of 1.0 cc. Wellllllll they had a new fluoro machine and said they wanted to see my band. I had seriously muffin-topped it. I am sure when I've closed off before and had unfills (one complete one last summer) that this has been the same thing. I have had 3 or 4 episodes this past year of a bleeding that I spit up as well. It is not pure blood, but more like the coffee ground type of vomiting. Now I have been lectured, handed new guide books, am completely unfilled and supposed to be eating like a bandster with small portions, 4 hours apart. I read that OCC (Dr. Ortiz) recommended liquids for 6 weeks following mushrooming the band. Mine wasn't mushroomed, that I know of, on the fluoro, but I don't know that it never did lax enough to flop over the band. After unfilling, the muffin top went down, and fluid (barium) funnelled right through the band as it was supposed to. I was told to give it a month, and it should stay down if I treat it right, and then with slow fills I can get the small pouch up top that I'm supposed to have. My concern now is I have an erosion. I have had 2 episodes of excruciating rib/heart pain that feels like it comes from my stomach area...very painful. I'll drink Water and as soon as it hits the band, the pain subsides. Then it comes back and I drink..it goes away. Then I eat and it's gone. I am worried. I don't know that I haven't eaten like a bandster, because I do small portions, stop when I'm full, don't PB, etc., however, I don't measure my food, and I do snack a lot, and drink fluids when I eat, etc., which I know I'm not supposed to do. No MORE! I have had this band for 2 years, and never really connected with the idea that I must measure my food to 1/2 cup, eat that only, no fluid, and wait 4 hours. This is what my fill doc is calling "eating like a bansters". I think myself pretty smart and well informed, but I never got it I guess. Anyway, hoping I don't need a revision. I am very worried though. I will be calling OCC and seeing what they say and keeping my flier miles just in case. We are not anywhere at the end of our journey. I am glad for those of you that are still posting and your support means so much to me. Thanks if you read this!) Hugs, Rhonda

I do a full 48 hours liquids after a PB and not from self-discipline. I feel my stomach needs that time to recover. I'm really good at not PBing these days. I really have learnt to slow down and chew and pick foods that work. NValicia - that is truly outstanding and you must have worked hard. I must say you deserved a great result like that.I remember when you got your port revision. I didn't want anything to go wrong for any of us and felt so bad for you. I can't believe how much your BMI has dropped. Inspirational!
  6. What does it mean revision? You look great by the way..what a difference! Sent from my iPad using RNYTalk
  7. OK I get the intermittent fasting method burns better than regular eating. My problem is I’m confused on whether to do the fasting during the day or at night. So confused I don’t know what to do. I am 10 weeks out from a revision from sleeve to bypass should I be trying this fasting right now or is it only during maintenance?

    Anyone here?

Audree - Another question about your brachioplasty. A woman on my thread about the brachioplasty told me that she really regretted having it done. She had it done in 2004 and her scars are so bad she feels like Frankenstein's monster. She even had a scar revision. Are you unhappy with your scars? Do you think the scars are worth it? Do you have any photos you can share with us?
  10. I’ll chime in here. I had RYN Oct 2016 weighing 292. I had a lower body lift Aug 2017 at 197. The lowest I got to after my skin surgery was 184. I’m currently 190....down 5 from a very enjoyable Christmas! Back on track and feeling great. I never really exercised much just some treadmill walking and very active with my son. I think the key is moderation, but also not letting things get to far off track that it’s hard to pull them back. My goal weight is 185 and I complete feel like these 5lbs will be no problem. Just logging my food again and trying to limit treats. I’m a size L-XL/12-14 and love everything about life right now. Planning a second surgery to have a small revision to the upper tummy and a breast lift/augmentation (maybe arms and thighs too) in April :-) Hope that helps!

    My Mexicali Experience

Thank you so much!!!! I am seriously considering going to Dr. Aceves for my revision surgery. I won't lie, there is alot of apprehension simply for the fact this surgery will be out of the Country. However the more wonderful posts I see like this, the better it makes me feel. So... THANK YOU!! And especially thank you for taking your time and being detailed. I prefer detail when I'm making such a huge decision. It's stories like this that clear the air and get me ever more ready!
  12. I'll be 7 years post gastric sleeve in December. I never reached goal, but lost 80 lbs. I managed to keep most of it off for about 4 years and slowly the carbs crept back into my life and the weight gain began. I gained 35 lbs back and I'm so disgusted with myself. It took me so long to get the courage to finally have WLS. I was so nervous and afraid that I swore if I put myself through surgery I would never gain all my weight back. I've tried Keto, and did really well for about a year and a half until I was no longer losing and just couldn't commit to the lifestyle. It seems I've lost any will power I may once had and I really don't want to get a revision if I can help it. How do I restart my weight loss? I know I've probably stretched my pouch. Do I go back to drinking shakes? Has anyone had any success in losing their significant weight gain without having to have a revision, or is a revision in my future?
  13. I was banded in 2008 @ 280 lbs, had a revision for a slip in 2009. Got down to 160 with band (the after shot shown). Complications led to a LP to sleeve revision (my weight was yoyo-ing all over the place for a year, gained about 25 lbs) Had a revision to the sleeve in Nov of 2014. My Before and After are all Band Pics.

    Banded Plication

I have the banded plication. I was banded originally in Dec, 2001 and did well with the band for about 7 years. After our daughter was born I never could get the *right* fill amount plus my port had flipped almost immediately so fills were problematic. Over about a 2 year period I regained about 80 pounds with pregnancies, a torn achilles and 5 months of bed rest. I went to Dr. Billy after consulting with my doctors at Cedars-Sinai for a second opinion on a revision. I, like a lot of plication patients, researched the sleeve gastrectomy. I liked it a lot but had difficulty with the idea of my stomach being cut out and discarded. After a few months of research and speaking with 4 doctors, I decided plication was best for me. I have a lot of experience with Drs. Ortiz and Corvala so Tijuana was an option but I was lucky enough to find Dr Billy here in Southern California. I chose to get rebanded mainly for insurance purposes as they don't pay for plication. I don't plan to ever fill my band but it is there if needed. I am happy with the plication but like others have said WLS is a tool. I exercise almost every day in some form and try to stick with protein first, water then fruits and veg (I'm not allowed many yet). I've lost about 26 pounds in 6 weeks. I'd like it to be more but so far, I'm happy with my surgery and results. I have about 60-70 more pounds to go and I'm okay with it taking me a year to lose. So far the plication is everything I thought the band would be. I get full on about 1/4 of what I used to eat and more importantly, I'm not constantly hungry!! Head hunger is a b*tch but I'm dealing with it with the help of a therapist. Good luck to you in whatever path you choose.

    I Hate my Lap Band

I actually can relate. I had my band emptied and I still can't eat most foods like salad or Proteins that are not drenched in some sauce or dressing. Right now as I type this I have Hard boiled egg stuck I my band...it's always been an issue since I had it placed in 2007. I am currently in process of going through revision to RNY due to insufficient weight loss and heartburn. I still have to go through all of the insurance requirements same as first time around. We will be submitting to insurance in about 2 weeks so will see if I get approval. Insurance does need to see you have been compliant with the post op requirements etc. I would start looking into it more.

    Gastric Sleeve to Gastric Bypass

I had Lap Band, developed GERD and due to overuse of Protonix, I developed a kidney stone. So it was then that I decided that I had to move on the GERD issue. I had the band removed in April 2021 (no regain, but I didn't get to my goal weight with the band) and now I'm revising to RNY soon. I was fearful of RNY when my surgeon told me it was the best way to resolve the GERD. And after watching a video, I realized that my fear was based on Lap Band marketing. In order for Lap Band to be successful, they had to make their competitor look bad. So Lap Band took old data about RNY (before surgical improvements were made) and used complication rates of the older style RNY surgery that was from I believe the 1980's? So when you say that RNY is a permanent surgery... are you aware that RNY is reversible? You went forth with sleeve surgery and they removed about 80% of your stomach, do you not think that's permanent? It's more permanent than RNY. Sure things are rerouted, but nothing is removed. So it can all be rerouted to "normal" if necessary. There's many, many people on this forum that have revised from other wls (Band, Sleeve) to RNY and are happy and thriving. I hope to be one soon.
  17. Im a lapband revision too!!! Im so excited. I wish I had skipped the band and had the sleeve done in 06

    New 60+ Thread

Well, unfortunately I had to switch to a night time weigh in this week (TOPS), so I had a gain! Boo Hoo!! Hope next week will be better. A new TOPS group started up at our RV park so we don't have to travel up the road now. But, it meets at night!! If you want to come down and warm up, don't go to Florida!! We're in the Palm Springs area...... CALIFORNIA!! And it hasn't been a GREAT winter so far. We just had a week of wonderful weather and then came yesterday!! Our Valentine's plans had to be revised because they included going to the Palm Springs Thursday night street fair and it was TOO COLD to walk around outside! It even snowed in Palm Springs yesterday!! I think it's a little warmer today and the wind isn't howling like it was yesterday. So we are getting ready to go to the pool for Water aerobics! We chickened out yesterday!

    December Delights 2009

You are not alone, Happy. I lurk here, but don't post much. I'll lose a few pounds right after a fill, and then spend a couple of weeks gaining and losing those same few pounds. I, too, have never PB'd, slimed or got stuck. (not that I really WANT to, LOL) I can eat whatever. Last week I ate 3 slices of pizza with absolutely no trouble. My net loss is about .5 lb per week avg. I know, a loss is a loss. I AM happy that I have lost some, but I know I could/should be doing way better. I have a heck of a lot to lose - at least 150 lbs. I thought because I am starting at such a high BMI the weight loss would be easy at first, THEN slow. Ugh. I'm behind in my fills, which I know is part of it. I may be looking at port revision soon - my port is at a funny angle and I have to have all my fills under flouro. My surgeon does not typically do the flouro, and he is not happy about it. I'm afraid my ins will not cover it. Anyway, I don't mean to be too negative. I do have hope and faith that this will work for me eventually.

    August Sleevers?! Where Ya's At?

Hi All August Sleevers- I received my revision from Lap-Band (Aug 2010) to Sleeve on Aug 15th (a little late on the posting) at that time they also removed my gallbladder and repaired my hiatal hernia. Anyone who had surgery around then- how are you doing so far? I've actually had a good run so far and I am feeling great. -Emily
  21. I'm still so confused. Why do you keep posting pics of Ed Burns? But serious proppahs dude!!!!! Congrats and so happy you shared! Can you believe you are the same guy that started your journey or even your revision journey? And don't you think IF has been a game changer on the loose skin front? (and yet, part of me is still saying...and STILL no di*k pics all up in heah for us...I just don't get it...)
  22. Before Band to RNY revision And after
  23. As always, this board is an amazing source of inspiration! I always get so excited looking through the new photos. I'm currently past my goal and in the process of firming up and maybe losing just a few more. Also preparing for a port revision, as my flat-ish tummy now makes my port look like a large golfball growing under my skin. Not so pretty. On a side note, I can't believe how few photos I have at my heaviest... Ahh, the world of digital photography; I look fat in that photo? DELETE! lol So I have some slim pickings from my preop weight. I haven't seemed to lose my love of black tank tops though, hmm...
  24. Guys I think I'm going to revise my goal weight. 30 more pounds might be too much more to loose, especially if my neck starts to look drawn. I know that this weight is still obese in fact morbidly obese but Id need to loose 40 more bls to be correct weight and even my doctor said thats probably too much. I vow not to get carried away with this weightloss thing though. Next thing you know I'll have to start looking for a plastic surgeon ! -106 lbs
