  1. Hi! I'm 15 days post op and after receiving and starting reading the BIG book I think I've pushed my diet too fast. We received paper work on post op from our dr. But it was conflicting. When I left the hospital and went to the grocery store, my guide was like most people buy yogurt water and Gatorade. Soooo I've had yogurt sense day 3 and other soft daries as well as soft mushy veggies and two days ago I introduced mashed potatoes. I've had absolutely no issue. How bad have I messed up?
  2. Invictus

    this makes no sense.

I have mainly focused on getting in as much hydration as possible since surgery. Tummy does not tolerate protein drinks or yogurt very often. I was under the impression hydration was most important the first two weeks, but get in as much protein as you can. I hope I didn't make a mistake?!?!
  3. I am just over 9 weeks out and just FINALLY feeling better and feel like I am turning a corner. (No vomiting in 8 days! YAY!) I had quite a bit of trouble with meats but likely because I wasn't chewing enough or eating too much so I have stayed with very soft foods that I knew I could tolerate and with that I don't feel like I am making the healthiest choices - just been focused on getting any food down and keeping it there and learning to stop when satisfied, eat slowly, etc. I am consuming around 500-600 calories per day with 80-90g Protein (thanks to shakes). I am not crazy about cooked mushy vegetables though I do like raw veggies but I know my system is not quite ready to tolerate them. I do love fruit - especially berries but I know I am not quite ready for those either. I have had a small bit of banana a few times (in a shake) and a peach slice (in Water no sugar added) and tolerated both very well. For what it's worth, I am getting in about 1/4 to 1/3 cup per meal which is pretty much 2 Tbsp (1/2 ounce) of meat (shaved turkey or tilapia) and then another 2 to 3 Tbsp of cheese usually. (Most of my protein is coming from dairy - cheese, yogurt, etc.) I did successfully eat 1/2 a Quest bar today for Breakfast for the first time and I was very happy about that! I sure wish I could move on to nuts and Jerky but not confident I will chew it will enough yet to tolerate it. Oh and I have had scrambled eggs but honestly I just don't like them that much unless they have salsa on them. (Seem to be handling spicy just fine.) I was only able to eat about 1/4 of the egg before I just couldn't get in anymore. (Cold eggs are even nastier than hot eggs and eating a small bite every 90 seconds or so gets the eggs cold very quick!) I have a meeting with NUT on Monday but was wondering if anyone had suggestions that I might ask her if I can progress to. I think she has told me a few more weeks at least before raw veggies (never craved cucumber so much in my life! ) I am not frustrated or bored with my food choices at all. Not struggling with head hunger. Just wanting to make sure I am really working on healthy food choices in addition to very tiny food choices....

    CraveClean Protein Bake Shop

If u go into their website, every item is broken down. It gives u calories, Protein, fat, carbs, etc.. Example...I have the Carroat and its 91 calories. The huge brownie is 125 calories with 25 protein. They do not use white flour, either. I have half the brownie (warmed up) with yogurt and its Great!
  5. I pretty much lived on sugar-free pudding, yogurt and Taco Bell pintos and cheese for the week of puréed food. I had puréed chicken soup a few times but it felt very heavy and uncomfortable in my sleeve. Oh! One time I made a tomato/basil/ricotta/mozzarella bake and it was quite good. Then I tried to add spinach to it and I thought I was going to die after I ate it. Waaaaaay too fibrous too early on.
  6. Go on Pinterest and look up Bariatric puree recipes. Tons of ideas! I get to switch to purées on Tuesday (2 weeks out) and I can't wait. I'm gagging down shakes right now. I have yummy things planned. Scrambled eggs with feta. Chili. Refried Beans with chicken, cheese, and sour cream. Ricotta bake. Ground beef and ricotta in marinara. Tuna with mayo and pickles (no peel). I see so many people complaining about being sick of Soups and yogurt. Think outside the box, people!
  7. I had a difficult time figuring that out too...I used canned chicken and put it through my Magic Bullet and then added low fat mayo and just ate it with a spoon. I also eat Greek yogurt, soup and scrambled eggs. Seemed to work out for me. I know there will be a lot of other suggestions and I look forward to reading them too!
  8. I'm temporarily living with my mother, who is obese and fully into her own food addiction. I am forever hearing that I keep "too much food" in the refrigerator (kale, tomatoes, yogurt, cheese, peppers, Soups, leftovers from restaurants), and there is "no room for my food" (crap, crap and more crap).
  9. banana, Soup, low-fat cheese, couple ounces of no-bean chili mixed with a bit of low-fat cheddar, few slices of lean deli meat, and fairlife milk either hot with sugar-free cocoa mix or cold with sugarfree strawberry syrup. Those are the only things I've had over the past month that didn't make me feel sick or doubled over in pain. Even yogurt became really off-putting to me (everything is suddenly too sweet!) Protein shakes make me ill. Even my pain meds make me ill. My sleeve hates almost everything, lol. Down 43 lbs, but it's pretty miserable not being able to eat anything. I think I'll feel better when I start work and school again (three more days, Jesus!)

    July sleevers?

My typical day: 1 protein shake (160 cal, 30 protein) 4oz cottage cheese (90 cal, 10 protein) 4 oz refried beans purée (100 cal, 5 protein) sometimes w sprinkle of cheese 4 oz of Greek yogurt (110 cal, 15 G protein) 1/2 protein shake (80 cal, 15 protein) That's 540 calories, 75 protein. I need to add fruit and veg soon. Meet w NUT Wednesday. What are you guys eating?
  11. I also had an extreme aversion to sweet stuff post op until about 5 weeks out. I couldn't eat a SF popsicle or even a yogurt without it tasting sickenly sweet. Try finding Isopure liquid, the one in the glass bottle and dilute it down. I diluted it more than half. Everyone will tell you to get your Protein in but honestly I only got about 40gms in one Isopure the first 5 weeks and then the rest came from blended lentil Soups, blended cottage cheese and refried Beans with melted cheese. The first 4 weeks your taste can change drastically, its very common! Right now the most important thing you can do is keep sipping as much as possible all day long! Follow the guidelines as best as possible but remember everyones transition time (4-6weeks) can be very different. You are going to do great just don't stress about it right now!

    Vitamins and timing

Ah… yes. The whole sick stomach from vitamins thing. I’ve been there and it’s what lead me to Vita4Life. I struggled so much fresh post op with vitamins and I was terrified I was going to never be able to keep vitamins down. My last option was to try them. What I wound up doing was opening the capsules and mixing them in to things like my protein shakes or my yogurt. I even put the contents in to a little of my dinner. Let me tell you, they saved me. I just swallow them whole now, but at the time, I couldn’t have done anything but a powder from capsules and I’m positive of it. You should try it. I’m sorry, I remember what it feels like and it’s awful. And scary. www.vita4life.net

    Meal Prep

Planning is key! And I am horrible at it. I know what to do but it is hard to do. However, it is the biggest part that will help you succeed so I applaud you asking this question now. A couple of things. YOu know your food log that you are supposed to keep? If you fill it out on Sunday for the entire week, you will know what you are going to eat for the week and can get everything prepped early. Fill out what you will eat/drink for every meal and snack for the entire week. You can even cook it all on one day and just reheat it throughout the week. I think I am more successful when I fill all this out on paper but I also tend to not do it on paper so that isn't good. So I used an Excel spreadsheet . Just keep going down the spreadsheet for the next days. Oh, it wouldn't let me post it!! ******Note that I am a year and a half out so my food list will be different from yours!!!!!***** Basically, it should be kind of like this (though things probably won't line up here. Aug 3 Breakfast 2 eggs scrambled 12 g coffee black 0 g Snack Greek nonfat yogurt 12 g Lunch 2 oz chicken 14 g raw veggies 0 g balsamic vinegar 0 g Snack Greek nonfat yogurt 12 g Dinner chicken marsala 14 g Total 64 g But WHAT to make?! That is where I fall short. I have my dishes that I know how to make but I'm not a very good cook and don't have a wide variety of things to make. I'm still a work in progress! I would love to also hear what other people do.

    Peanut butter

@@agwj71 PB2 is generally a better option because it is so much lower calorie. I stir it into yogurt and cottage cheese, and add it to protein shakes. You can also stir it into hot cereal if you eat that sort of thing (I don't do grains).

How much should I be eating?

I Was Sleeved 29 July. Was on water, juice and broth only till this morning. Doctor cleared me to eat yogurt today and pudding in 5 more days.
  17. I occasionally do days where I eat vegetarian and still meet my protein goals pretty readily. But does the title of your post mean that cheese is the only dairy you will eat? That might be tough -- cheese doesn't have as much protein per serving as other dairy (except maybe cottage cheese). If you are open to eating yogurt, particularly Greek yogurt and drinking milk, you'll likely do fine. There are some specialized brands of milk like Fair Life and CarbMaster that take out sugar and add in additional whey that work really well for post-wls people. Whey protein powder is another good dairy option to keep your protein high and your carbs low. Good luck!

    2+ weeks post op

Am on day 9 as well. Was on water, diluted juice and clear broth till today. Today I was cleared for Yogurt and milk, low fat. In 5 more days I could have puddings. My doc told me no protein shakes till 3 weeks post op. Every doctor has a system..

What do you eat in a day?

When I first wake up I drink 2 cups of Water. That usually takes 30 minutes to an hour depending on how much time I have. After that, I always have a Protein shake (Premier chocolate or Atkins Cafe Caramel) that takes about 15 minutes. 2 hours later, I have greek yogurt and that can take about 8 to 12 minutes to eat. 2 to 3 hours after that, I have my lunch which is usually cheese and deli meat like turkey pepperoni. I will eat 17 turkey pepperoni slices and maybe 5 colby cheese cubes. That can take about 20 to 30 minutes depending on the day. For dinner, I'm not usually hungry so I just drink a glass of milk or have a popsicle.
  20. I'm having surgery on my left arm on the 17th of august, and my right knee is in a brace and having PT for it and my neck which is so not good . I also am wearing a catheter due to bladder retention until september. needless to say i'm not able to do much exercise except for what I have to do for PT on my arm, knee and neck. I'm not seeing much weight loss and think I'm in a stall. i'm so afraid i'm going to stop losing weight or even worse, regain weight. I had my surgery April 13th, 2015 and have lost 50lbs so far (not complaining). Being 57 doesn't help either. I'm making sure I get at least 60-70gms of Protein a day. I'm a picky eater and so I'm concerned that is hurting me. I've had to set reminders on my phone for when i need to eat or snack (i have a brain injury and my long and short term memory is horrible.) I basically have 1 Protein Drink in a.m. with my meds (30gms protein) and then I eat a lot of light yogurt (80 cal, 7gms protein) x 6. sometimes boars head deli turkey plain, baked potato w/chilli, blueberries with almond milk, spaghetti, chicken, salmon, but on days that i don't want to cook it's mainly the Protein drinks and yogurts and maybe something i made ahead of time and froze. All in all it stays under 1000 cal. since i'm not going to be as mobile maybe I should cut back calories? how many calories do you think a couch potato burns in a day? lol cuz that's what i'm going to be for atleast 2 weeks. Has anyone had to put their exercise on hold? and what was the outcome. I think i'm going to be unable to really exercise for a couple of months. They are talking about doing neck surgery next after i've recovered a bit from my shoulder repair. I've also found the strangest thing. sometimes (usually in the afternoon) i find I can eat more than what I typically eat. a.m. is 11oz of protein drink, snack is 1 yogurt, lunch is usually 2 yogurts, my snack is a protein cookie (yuck) or yogurt and then dinner can be more traditional. I'm open to any and all feedback! Kat
  21. you actually might find foods that are currently appealing to you, aren't after surgery. Post surgery I have very little interest in junk foods. I was a big pizza fan, but I have no interest anymore. I know that bread hurts my stomach, so I don't even think about it. And I really don't crave any sugary foods. I might have something sweet (sugar free popsicle, sugar free pudding, 100 calorie frozen yogurt) once a week. And I don't feel like im missing out on anything else. My biggest suggestion right now, is as you're starting the process, start doing research, checking out this site and others, to look into foods. You said you're a finicky eater. Nows the time to start figuring out what you do like that will be good after surgery, because the first year post surgery is critical. It's good to have a plan. Congrats on the decision! We're all here to support you

    Full Liquids

Greek yogurt and cottage cheese should wait until the very end of the liquid diet/beginning of pureed foods - about 2 weeks post-op - and ONLY if you can tolerate them well.
  23. Burgers, pizza, French fries, frozen yogurt, garlic bread, sandwich, bread and butter.... To name a few lol I am 3 week postop so still on purée.

    2+ weeks post op

I am 9 days out from VGS and am on a liquid diet until day 21. I can have Clear liquids and Protein shakes. No yogurt. I am so tired of drinking. I am not ready for meat, but a yogurt or watered down oatmeal would be great. I am only getting 500-600 calories a day and my body has slowed the weight loss because it is in starvation mode. Difficult when you are consuming so little and the scale barely moves. Physically the surgery was much easier than I anticipated, but it is a mental roller coaster
  25. I'm lucky because I only have liquids for Breakfast and lunch. For supper we get a lean meat and vegetables. Also, for Snacks we can have a piece of fruit, low-fat yogurt or more veggies. I have lost 12 pounds in 10 days on this and it is giving me a lot of confidence that I can do the post-op diet as well. That's been the most important thing, the psychological boost from following the plan and gaining that confidence.
