  1. So today I experienced my first gain since being banded in Sept. 1.6lbs. I haven't really been doing anything different (maybe a few more mindless Snacks but nothing huge) to where I think a gain ... especially almost 2 pounds... should've occurred. I'm hoping its just Water retention or something.. Anyway, I'm a huge thinker and hypochondriac so I was wondering if someone could help me out here? I highly doubt I ruined my band but I can't stop thinking of the worst. My surgeon says that the solid foods (Proteins, veggies, and carbs) should equal no more than 1 cup of food per meal. My thing is... how do I know if a piece of salmon and some veggies is 1 cup. You can't fit salmon into a measuring cup. I need more of a visual idea... maybe I am eating too much :/ Thanks for any advice!
  2. Hello fellow sleevers!! I'm am just about 9 months out was sleeved 2/3.... I'm down 70lbs.. I'm 5 foot so I'm a shorty... I have 13 pounds until I meet my goal weight!!! With the weather changing here on Ft. Lewis,WA I've had to change my workouts. Almost there!!

    Gained weight after medication

Any time post surgery that I've gained I'll just go back to basics. Protein first. Veggies, minimal carbs, more water and more walking. Comes off way easier than before. But i haven't taken gabapentin long enough post surgery to notice a difference tho. Also haven't taken birth control since surgery cause I'm afraid of possible gain. Worried it wont work

I think this is a normal and healthy fear. I agree with the sentiment of the other posters - it's a tool, you have to do the work, you feel differently about food in the beginning, and you will see. I also want to say that at over two years out, I STILL worry that it won't work for me. I live in fear every day that I won't be able to maintain my life and body. I LOVE being thin and every gift that comes with it. I now realize that it can all be gone in a hurry. It's all me now. I still have the sleeve, and it does offer some restriction, but if I let myself, I could eat enough over the course of the day to get back up to 300 pounds. I believe that I've learned enough during the time it took me to lose the weight NOT to let that happen, but I know that I have to stay vigilant. So, I say all this not to scare you, but to empower you. I am in charge of my weight, and you can be, too. The sleeve bought me a window of opportunity, and I successfully used it to get to a normal weight. So while I fear it could be easy to lose control, t's much easier to maintain that than it is to face losing a hundred pounds or more. I think I learned enough along the way to make the most of the gift of the sleeve. It's not some sort of magic - we have the power in this case.

    To tell or not tell

There's been quite a bit of dicussion about telling or not telling the world that we are thinking about or had the lab band procedure. I have to say that I am torn about this. I have told my spouse (very supportive as you can read in a previous entry), my daughters (not so supportive), my son (doesn't feel I need it but "whatever you think is right mom) my mom (that's a lot of money that could be spent on a really fun trip) and two people at work (one really positive one with a funny look) My husband says we should shout it from the mountain tops then everyone can be supportive and cheer you on. I am more reserved because I've failed before. I think in the end, we neeed to ignore the rest of the world and decide what is best for us. Not the family, not the hubby, not the kids not everyone else. Perhaps the key is are we trying to "cheat" and think this will be a magic bullet or are we addressing health issues and improving our quality of life? If it's the latter, would we question exercising, taking a necesary medication or going to a physician? I believe lab band should be no different. The difference is that people don't ask about doctor appointments, the medicine we are taking or our exercise regiman. When we start showing weight loss, people will not hesitate to dwell, question or badger. My plan is to take the two weeks off that I am on the liquid diet and at least 2 weeks off after my surgery. Knowing myself, I know that I will have trouble when it will be so obvious that I am having to eat (or drink) differently. I hope this will help me get off to a more positive (and personal) start. On the plus side, I managed to exercise 4 out of 7 days this week. Nothing too taxing, but really trying to start getting into better habits.

  7. I started this Journey officially on January 12th 2016 and was approved for the surgery on February 8th! I'm scheduled for March 8th! I've been overweight all my life and I've reached my peak weight of 358! I do eat healthy but I just eat too much sometimes! I'm mostly nervous because I haven't told anyone besides my mother and one of my coworkers! I'm just glad to be able to kick start my healthy lifestyle! If anyone has any pointers of suggestions please feel free to leave them!

    Last blog perhaps...?

What in the world am I doing continuing this lap band blog without my lap band? I suppose my main purpose is to give everyone insight on my journey. I still can't positively answer the question of whether my band has been worth the weight loss. I can say it made a difference in the amount that I was eating at one time. Although some cheat with the band, I rarely did. My progress has been all me. And a little help from the band. Most of my journey was slow and dull except for the last 3 weeks of my lap band's stay. I was so nauseous and dry heaves were painful for days and days. After a week in the hospital, band gone and no more sickness. What a way to end a journey. I pray all of you much success. I pray for me continued weight contentment.

    Worried it wont work

Hi i was worried it wouldn't work for me.. I almost gave up.. I truely did.. A little angel gave me a second chance to live. Almost 5 years ago i chose lapband surgery.. Biggest mistake for me.. I had no life for 4 years .. Was too scared to dine out with friends and family as food would always get stuck and i was so worried that i wouldn't make it to the bathroom on time, so i opted to stop eating out.. I was mostly confined to my home and would only go into the office 3 days a week.. My quality of life was non existent.. Luckily for me.. Yes i say this again.. Luckily for me I gained all my weight back as I formed a pouch above my band and it therefore had to be removed.. The band failed!! It was only when my lapband was removed and i had vertical sleeve done that i realised i was given a second chance at life. I cant eat all foods.. I struggle with meat and most dairy products, BUT i can eat fish, eggs and most nuts and veggies though!! My eating habits now relate to what is widely known as Pescetarian. I can eat out with friends and family without disrupting the group by me having to run for the bathroom! Life is good. I honestly wish you every success with your weight loss journey xox

    hello

hello ladies and gents.my name is Kathy from Southern Ca.Antelope Valley area to be exact.my current weight is 223 at only 28 yrs of age.this past year i gained most of the weight.dealing with tons of streas, poor eating habits and no excersize.I am with kaiser and want to know what the process is like?
  11. I have not had my sleeve yet but I had my gallbladder out many years ago. At the time I was doing Weight Watchers and had lost a measly 40 pounds. It was pretty painful, I was happy to have it removed. Gallbladder issues can happen after any weight loss, it isn't just because of the surgery. Some doctors will take the gallbladder out during WLS but most will not, it is not a problem that everyone has so they don't see the need. Many people on here have reported going back and having their gallbladder removed after WLS. A COUPLE of people on here have said their doctors have given them medication to protect their gallbladder after WLS. I have never heard if such a thing before though????
  12. I am super excited and nervous, I got my surgery date right on my birthday. Today I turn 27 and my surgeons office called after 2 weeks of crazy wait, giving me a surgery date of april 9th. DJackson you made me smile, there is no reason now!! LOL He is a great guy I am telling you my perception this morning he might tell you he is worried, who knows I remind him all the time he is not Tom Cruise and he needs to settle down. How old are you? 33 What surgery did you have? Lapband Male or female? Female How much weight did you lose? 84 so far with a lot more to go! How fast did you lose your weight? Sometimes it drips off me, others it feels like it's going to hang on forever! Was banded late July 2013. If you are female and didn't have cosmetic surgery, are you comfortable enough to go to the beach in a bikini? PFFFFT. lol How much loose skin do you have? My arms are going to be really bad, I can already tell. I'm not shocked though, I've always had huge arms anyway. If I ever get up the nerve and money in the future to have plastics, my arms will def be the first to go. I'm just now starting to see signs on my stomach of how much skin there's going to be, I think it will be relatively substantial but possibly not so much that I will feel like I absolutely have to have a tummy tuck to go on. I'm worried to see how my thighs and legs will end up. I've always had tree trunks for legs. I can't even visually imagine what they will look like if the fat is ever gone off of them.

    Emotional wreck

I won’t say I “did it” on my own, but I did lose almost 60 lbs before my surgery on my own. One of my friends asked why I went though with surgery after losing so much weight on my own, and my answer was that I’ve always been able to lose weight, I’ve just never been able to keep it off. Surgery gave me the help I needed to continue going. I would have backtracked by now without surgery, and I’d be continuing to fight an uphill battle because weight loss starts off easy, and gets harder the further you go. The preop 6 month diet isn’t to see if you can do it on your own, it’s the insurance trying to get people to give up so they can disqualify you. (Sorry, but I work with insurance and yes there’s a part that is making sure people are committed etc etc but mostly it’s to reduce costs by weeding people out). Give yourself the time you need, and push out that surgery date if you want. You’re the customer, you tell them when you want to do this. But really strongly consider if you are truly committed and confident you can do this on your own and maintain it for life, or if you’re nervous about surgery. It’s fine to be nervous! I was terrified. But almost 6 months and 120+ lbs later, I am so proud of the commitment I made to give myself another chance at life.
  17. Surgery date 5/28, SW 244, CW 188. Been in a 2 week stall, but I seem to loose for a couple weeks then stall, but loose inches. At least that is how it feels. I have gone from a Very tight 18 to a comfortable 14, tops have gone from. 2x to a large! hair started coming out last month, I am trying to not stress at the handfuls (at least it feels that way!) that come out when I wash it. I am not the best at exercising and I know my weight loss would probably be faster. It will come! Pics are my journey so far... . Best thing I could have done, ever!

  22. My energy level hasn't been great considering I have lost alot of weight and should be feeling GREAT. For the amount I have lost, it in the past took more like a year to acheive this much weight loss and I remember feeling so energized at the weight I am now. I guess I am getting older, but probably the big deal is that it is hard on the body to go through the surgery and rapid weight loss - makes sense that it will take awhile before I feel that extra energy boost. What did help though was upping the exercise. I went back to things that have energized me in the past - Water aerobics, elliptical trainer and a bit of weight lifting.

    Emotional wreck

Good morning. Today I am supposed to start my 2 week pre op diet. I have struggled hard the past 2 days and am a wreck. I even think about the surgery and I cry so hard I can’t breath. Let me go back a little bit. My insurance does not cover the surgery so I am paying myself. That also means that it all is happening really fast. My initial consult was March 5 and surgery is May 6. Also no prerequisite were required like a psych evaluation. I started calorie counting and exercising in my own in February and since I have lost 24 pounds on my own. From 291 to 267. I never had the 6 month wait with working with a dietian to see if I could do it on my own. This is the first time I’m trying to change the problem not bandaid it with weight loss pills. And it looks like it is working but will be slower than surgery. I’m on track for 10 pounds a month. I have no underlying conditions such as blood pressure or diabetes. This surgery is scaring the poop out of me and I’m so close to backing out. Has anyone been here and done it on there own? I feel like there is no part of this I can mentally handle. I can handle tracking my food and losing slowly.

Only you know yourself. For me at two weeks out I had doubts too but I knew that I had lost weight (even a great deal of it) on my own many times but I always gained it back (plus some). You have to make the best decision for yourself. The statistics say that the chances for someone at our weight (that qualify for this surgery) losing all the weight by diet and exercise alone and actually keeping it off are slim but there are some people that do. Only you know your circumstances, would you be healthy and happy if you lost some but not all of the weight? Also, I would say if you really are concerned that you could slow down the process (ask for a different surgery date) and even ask for referrals for the nutritionist and psychiatrist or psychologist they normally use. There is no reason that they should object to you seeing those people on your own if you think it will help you make your decision. I think most people will tell you that they had some doubts around the time of the preop diet though. Only you know if they are small doubts or real ones.
  25. JDLane

    Emotional wreck

I agree with what others have said that you may want to slow down your process. Just because they gave you a surgery date doesn't mean it's set in stone. I'm also paying for my own surgery with no insurance but I still completed my program the same way I would with insurance just a little faster. I did all the pre-op classes, met with dietician, met with behavioral consult etc. I know how to lose weight the healthy way, I think most of us on here do. I've lost weight on my own several times in my life but it's very difficult for me to maintain. I don't view this surgery as a solution but it's a tool that's going to help me stick to the healthy choices without being starving hungry all the time or fighting crazy binges. If you've never even tried to lose weight on your own before you may find yourself resentful in a few years when you can eat the way you used to, wondering if you could have just done it on your own and still be 'normal'. I spent a long time looking down on WLS thinking I could do it on my own before accepting that my body simply cannot maintain that on it's own for whatever reason. You may need to take some more steps in your journey to get to a place of acceptance and not one of fear.
