  1. I am just starting solids and have been terrified to eat much because I don't want to see the scale go in the opposite direction. I have read numerous times that the body is healing and that one should not worry about weight or weight gain. Because I am already losing slow and it would hurt my poor lil feelings if the scale says I gained weight. I am easily discouraged and feel that if I see a gain when I am trying I would be devastated.

This thread is going to be sooo inappropriate!

OK, Now I remember who you are as you changed your screen name too. You know I worry more about my daughter than myself. I know because I've gained back weight quickly twice that it happens. I know because I've seen all the famous people on TV who have had the RNY done and you see it come back on. My daughter is the only person I know personally who has had this surgery. She is only post-op May 08. I don't want my daughter doing an emotional downhill spiral if that happens to her. I suppose I've been prepared though for it from the beginning on how to help her. She's still in therapy and I think it helps her and am hoping that will help her also if/when that happens. Of course once she had the surgery I joined a forum just when I had questions as she is not a forum girl. I know from Obesityhelp.com's revision section that every surgery has been revised to every surgery. I think I've seen someone have 3 different ones, I don't know what the high number is yet. But I assume they all can fail in one way or another. I never go to the point where I lost the weight but gaining it back is very stressful on the psyche. Having WLS and gaining weight is very damaging to the psyche too. My psyche is a bit fragile so that's why I'm back and forth about what I'm going to do. Either way I'm damned if I do or damned if I don't! My opinion is that the sleeve wouldn't work for me if the lap band didn't work. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think it's an option anyway. I remember you said you daughter had children too right? Do you think there is a connection between the pregnancy/(s) and the weight gain at all? My daughter has never had dumping syndrome, I guess I expected that to happen too.
  3. Val, I am glad u have some relief, I know when I was too tight it wasn't worth the weight I lost. I was miserable. Heal first, then worry about your diet. Linda, it is so nice to see you back. if your weight gain is from slider foods, I don't think a fill will help. I am speaking from experience. Eat protien and see if u feel full and then you'll know.........It is hard, because I also let myself slide and now the thought of meat and cheese and eggs make me sick sometimes...keep us posted and just know you are not alone we are all struggling. the band is not the easy way out, it is just a tool, we still have to work hard to get to our goal.......vicki
  4. I just had my lap band surgery on 11/2/09. I'm 5 days post-op and feel pretty good except some intermittent pain under my left rib cage. Dr. Hoffman and the staff and the comprehensive weight loss center are amazing. I started my journey in August @ 277 and was 247 on the day of surgery. By keeping my food logs and following the south beach/low glycemic diet as well as exercising it's been easy. As a matter of fact, I'm chomping at the bit to get back to the gym. Right now I'm only able to tolerate 1 to 2 oz of protein shake every hour and am down 6 lbs since surgery. I have my follow-up with Dr. Hoffman on Tuesday. I also like the fact that they have the weight loss support group that meets monthly. I went even prior to having my surgery and it was great to talk with everyone that was there. I'm hoping to go to this months meeting and then I'll be there regularly starting in January (had conflict with bowling on Wednesdays). I saw a bunch of post regarding weight gain and my advise it to start doing food logs again and jump on the south beach wagon again. Make sure you're getting your exercise too. I swear by the food logs. It makes you accountable for your choices. Surgery is a tool but you have to be incontrol of what you put in your mouth.

I am discouraged - please read

20 lbs since February?? Um.. is this not great??? How much were you losing BEFORE being banded?? The AVERAGE is 5-10lbs PER MONTH - after having restriction. I'd say you have done better than average and you can tell those inquiring minds that the band is slow weight loss, not unhealthy super fast weight-loss and that you'll report to them on a monthly basis or quarterly, but minute by minute is just unreasonable.. lol. You probably ARE compacting and gaining muscle OR your itty bitty 2lbs is water weight gain. I fluctuate this much IN A DAY... Give yourself a break, girl, this is not a race and you're right on track! Keep up the good work and try to relax, this is for life. Even your doctors goal is ONLY 50-100 lbs PER YEAR. It all works out over time...

    considering insanity

Yup, I get plenty of Water, and I take benifiber quite frequenly, nearly everynight, espically now that i'm so darn tight. And I've tired the mixing it up like you suggest Eileen, too, but that didn't work any more than anything else has Good point about the meds Paula. I 've check my meds myself, and weight gain was only an indicator when I was on birth control this summer. I am still gaining and losing those same five pounds.

I can relate, I've lost about 13lbs since Dec. But gained 3 back so now it's 10. And I have never been a sweet eater but I polished off a whole bag of robin eggs(malted milk balls) between sunday and monday. I guess I have that wanting to munch thing going on with the quitting smoking. I took ya'lls advice with the Chantix and it does make it much more bearable. It's more of a want then a need now. And I've never been good at not getting what I want, Spoiled yes but true never the less. I think I need a swift kick in the a** to get back on track, you'ld think that 3lb weight gain would have done it.
  8. wow, that is a long way off, but you will no doubt enjoy the holiday fiests. Just be mindful and do the best you can and worry about the weight gain later, you'll do fine. Me on the other hand, I have delved into the peanut butter cups and cant stop myself......aaaaahhhhh!!!!

    September Bandsters

MOM, no weight lost, no weight gained. I'll take that since I hosted early Christmas at my house and we had bad food EVERYWHERE! And yes, I was bad. I'm so glad to see I didn't put on the holiday 5-10.
  10. it'll be ok mKat, they will take care of whatever it is and who knows, maybe that is the cause of your weight gain and then you wont have to get the band.

    LGBTQIA?

Because for instance, there is statistical evidence that lesbians have higher rates of obesity than straight women and more issues with other addictive behaviors, such as smoking. This may indicate a different level of support is needed and I see a lot of posts about families where people with chosen family may not feel as included. I’m not asking to start trouble, I’m asking because I am a lesbian, and would want to reach out to others who may have had issues like these. This forum is about WLS support, right? Also, while we’re on the subject, I write healthcare grants regularly on the subject of people dealing with comorbidities/co-occurring disorders and since you brought up race and ethnicity, there are also studies that show we (people of color) have higher rates of obesity, hypertension, diabetes and other issues. Seems like a weight loss forum like this one may be a good place for people to safely discuss that part of their journey. Part of my own work in taking the step to WLS was understanding how my genetics and family make up play a part in my weight gain. Also understanding and coming to terms with my own sexuality was part of my weight gain. My question is, why is this threatening/upsetting (the caps) to you? I’m curious about your reaction to what seems a pretty normal question. I’ve recently been sleeved, and am just at my 2 week mark from surgery. I’m down 21 lbs. today.
  12. I wanted to share a note about weight gain during the surgery. As a few posted before, the fluid from surgery makes you GAIN weight when you get it, so don't be sad or look at the scale for a while! I knew I would gain fluid, also since I missed a few doses of diuretic meds during/after the surgery. I gained TWELVE POUNDS when I got home- and this is after almost no calories for two days! So far I have lost two of those pounds (TMI- peed them right out, ha ha). It will take some time for the rest of the liquid to go away- I can feel a lot of it in my gut, etc. Even more TMI- my main incision (I have five- the big one is right above my bellybutton) is definitely worse than the others, and last night there was a lot of bloody drainage out of it. Hopefully this is normal, and it seems to have calmed down. Not fun cleaning that off the floor through :rolleyes2: I'm sure this happens to a lot of other people, so I think we should just not look at that scale (or realize it's all fluids!). I have to say I think I have more pain than some others on here, along with a killer headache- I think maybe it's just the different ways we are affected by surgery, and how much they have to dig in there to do the surgery. I have to take two vicodin every four hours just to manage. I found that instead of grinding them and putting them into a spoonful of yogurt, it actually tasted way less bad to just chew them a bit and swallow with water. It is lovely here in MI today so I walked outside, slowly, for half a mile. Being outside was a relief! I hope the rest of you are doing well!

    July Butterflies Master Thread

Thanks for the support Kimaly. I used to get on LB Talk almost daily for a year and it did help. I also kept an online food journal and really need to get back to that. I had to have a total unfill this past Nov. I had been at almost perfect restriction and was losing steadily but had a very traumatic tragedy happen in our family and I was in total shock and couldn't eat for a week. When I did come around and try to eat, the stress had tightened my band to the point where I could hardly swallow water. I had lost 12 lbs in 10 days and looked like death warmed over. So had to have a total unfill and have slowly been trying to get back to where I was before but my dr. wants me to take it slow but I obsessing over this weight gain but can't seem to get motivated like I was before.

    July Butterflies Master Thread

I have a hard time with eggs and any type of bread product. The things I miss the most are sandwiches and pizza. I mourn for them, but I am certainly happier with weight loss and if I have to continue to mourn the loss I will. At my last fill which is always done under fluoro, my PA said my pouch had enlarged a little. Of course I freaked, and she said it was nothing to worry about and on a scale of 1-10 with 10 the largest, it was a 2. I told her I had been PBing still trying to find some Protein I could eat besides fish. She said to go on liquids for 2 days and eat really small meals after that ( 1 cup at the most) and she would check it again at the end of the month. Has anyone experienced this yet? What did you do and did it work? Wendy said if it didn't revert she could do a complete unfill for a month or more. This idea scares me to death as I picture uncontrollable eating and weight gain. Help!

My doctor said NO to surgery!

If WLS is something you REALLY feel you need to take control of your life, then don't let anyone stand in your way. When I made up my mind to go for it, no one was going to talk me out of it. I knew from 47 years of experience that I needed the extra help WLS offered. I had been overweight since childhood and could never control my weight gain. If my primary physician had discouraged me from WLS, I would have found another. My first call was to my insurance company to get a list of approved WLS doctors. I never went to a general practitioner, went straight to the WLS doctor and started the process. Get my free eBook - The Top 10 WLS Fears and How to Kick Their Butt!

Perhaps a counselor would help. food addiction is very real and very powerful. There is plenty to "fear", like weight gain, band slips, and health issues. But I don't think fear will help you. Addiction isn't rational and fear rarely plays a role in it. Just like a crack addict knows it can kill them, the fear of death isn't strong enough to tame the addiction. Food addiction is no different. Find a good counselor that deals with addiction, I really think it would help a lot.
  17. Just wondering...most of us have disclosed our fluid and protein intake, but how many calories are you guys getting? Back in 2008 I used to work at a weight loss clinic (go figure) but I did get down to 175 with suppressants, supplements, and a strict 500 calorie diet. It was a high protein low carb, low fat diet. What I noticed and what we would instruct our patients was never ever go under that 500 calories. It seemed to be the magic number that determined weight loss or weight gain! In the beginning, everyone lost huge amounts because it upended our routine but after week 2 if you weren't getting 500 calories, you would stay the same or gain. Over the weekend it hit me when I had 3 days of the same weight and a gain on day 4! My fitness pal was around 400 calories. So I made sure to get over 500 and started losing again. Also, for those excercising, if you consume 700 and burn 400 your're still under 500. I've noticed that on few posts of people excercising there butt off and getting their protein and water, but not losing. Anyway, I'm not an expert. Just a thought.
  18. This is very interesting to me! Even though you were eating no more than 500 calories per day, you were putting ON weight. Then your endocrinologist sent you for WLS after getting your thyroid condition under control? My question is, do you think your weight gain was JUST thyroid related? If so, why WLS considering you were managing calories to less than 500 per day? If not, do you think the WLS has helped despite the thyroid issue? Thanks! And continued success

    Goals out loud

I want to be within my target weight maintenance range at the two year mark - Oct 20th. Range is 153-156. Weight this morning - 151.6. I always read that most folks have a "bounce back" weight gain at the 12 to 18 month mark. My weight stabilized at 155 at about 13 months out. I was determined that there would be no bounce back. So far, so good! I'm absolutely convinced that the key is my food log. Which I've maintained since a few weeks after my surgery. And the next milestone will be being in the same range at the three year mark! Lovin the new me!!

    Pre-Op Diet

My surgery is on 8/1. I have my pre-op appt with the surgeon on 7/29. I was told to begin my liquid diet on 7/25. But the last 2 weeks I have been pigging out on all my favorite foods and I have gained about 10 since my last appt. I am worried I will go to my pre-op appt and they will be pissed at my weight gain and postpone my operation. I am scared. I began a low-carb diet today since that has been my diet of choice in the past that allowed me to lose the weight the fastest. I don't want to be postponed. I can't believe I gained 10 lbs. since my last appt. Feeling very disappointed with myself for that behavior. Did anyone else pig out or am I the only one?

    Wow U Eat That!?

Another "late post" due to vacation and medical issues, but wanted to "chime in"... Weight loss success is more than making good choices with food...there is portion control and conquering distorted thinking about food that are also "major players". It's like gun control...guns don't kill people, irresponsible people who possess and use guns in an inappropriate manner kill people. "Fast food" should not be "villianized"; like everything else, it's a choice we make. Burger King and McDonald's did not make people gain weight and become fat, the people who choose the less healthy items on the fast food menu and don't manage their portions are the ones who gain weight and become fat. We just returned from a road trip, and if you want to arrive at your destination in a timely manner, you just don't have the time to search out better places to eat. I managed to loose 2 pounds while on vacation, and yes, we did stop at Burger King and McDonald's where I was able to find healthy wraps and salads, and controlled my portions. Weight gain is a complex event; there are components of will power, education, and psychology involved. There is no "one size fits all" to describe the mitigating factors which cause an individual to become obese. Blaming fast food when you have a choice to manage portion size and choose healthy menu items is far too simplistic to be considered an idea of merit, IMHO. I eat responsibly, the same way that I carry a concealed weapons permit responsibly. Other's mileage may vary...
  22. Hi all!!! I'm new to this app. I had gastric sleeve surgery 2 weeks ago and instantly lost 14 pounds. Well I have gained 3 pounds back and it's causing some extreme anxiety. I feel like I'm gonna fail this time as I have so many times before. Anybody else experience this?

    Bizarre trend?

I respectfully disagree, buplee. I do not believe that some arbitrary number of psychotherapy appointments should EVER be required. Not every person with a food issue needs therapy. In some cases, it's knowledge they need, or some support while they assert their own discipline (i.e., the 6 month medically supervised diet). Some people have physical issues which exacerbate their weight gain. Some people just let themselves go because of other stressors in their lives, and by the time they started taking care of themselves again, they'd already dug themselves into a deep hole. I do agree with the psych evaluation that most of us have had to go through. If problems are uncovered at that time, of course it would be wise to get them fixed before they proceed into weight loss, but I don't believe that dictating that you will have 5 or 10 sessions is realistic. Some people can work through minor issues very quickly. Others may need to go longer. Either way, that should be something between the patient and their medical team to decide, and should not be an arbitrary dictation from on high.
  24. Hi everyone, One last update before Christmas. I am down 13.6kg (30lbs) since my procedure about 14 weeks ago. I was nearly 17 kg heavier this time last year and will be nice seeing in a new year lighter than the previous one. I think I am finding my esg groove. My portion sizes were getting relaxed as was some grazing so I have gone back to tracking what I eat and weighing some foods again. I have been at the gym most days since I joined even when I had good excuses not to go. I am enjoying the feeling of sore muscles and breaking a sweat. I really don't typically love exercise but I am realising that it's essential for building muscle and keeping my metabolism up. I did pay dearly this week after drinking a large volume of water very quickly. I felt awful and it didn't go away for a day. My dr said I wouldn't be restricted with fluids which is normally true, unless your an idiot like me and skull a giant glass of fluids. Oh man, it hurt. Definately won't be doing that again. Part of me wishes I had achieved a bigger weight loss at this stage but I have to be happy with slow but consistent losses. I guess we all want to wake up skinny but I do see my behaviour changing a lot during this journey. I really want to achieve a 20kg loss by the time I see my dr for my 6month review. I am still seeing more progress in my clothing sizes than on the scales. Just bought a size 12 dress for Christmas Day which feels great. Merry Christmas to the wonderful esg community. Here's to a healthy and happy holiday and keeping the weight gain contained!! Mel x
  25. Honestly, no. My weight gain made absolutely no difference to how he was with me and nor is the weight loss. I honestly did it for myself.
