Anyone else depressed after surgery?
summerseeker replied to BariJen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery the same day as you. I also had a extended hospital stay [5 days] because of swelling in my new tummy making me constantly vomit up every time I ate or drank. I had a miserable 2 weeks of this and felt like a fool for putting myself through this. My family were very worried for me and that made me feel more depressed. Then I got a urine infection turning my urine bloody which meant more meds to take I rang my dietician and she said - look just take the liquid penicillin. Try and drink as much as possible. Eat broth and rest as much as you can. Taking the pressure off worked after 2 days. I have 6 tiny meals a day, 2 of yogurt, 2 of soup and 2 of sieved cottage cheese. I am much better now and can sleep laying down. My mood has lifted and I am now taking all my meds and vitamins. I will play it by ear as to progressing to the next level next Wednesday. I hope you get the break you deserve too and see a little light down the line. -
Any April 2021 surgeries?!
Blueslily replied to KidaandRoux's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was allowed to eat small amounts of starches months ago as well, but I just wasn't having it. LoL. So, I didn't eat any. Oh, correction, I would eat corn sometimes mixed with veggies. The wraps I eat are spinach wraps also. Go figure. I added that in October. And I loss weight eating them also, but the past few weeks it slowed and I added the sweet potato just 2 weeks ago. That and going up maybe an ounce and a half in intake. I had this grazing thing going on in early October right after my 6 month weigh in (which was shocking), but I was still ok. I grazed on carrots, cantaloupe, and almond slivers, lol. The grazing was scary because I didn't want it to trigger a habit, but one day it just stopped. Oh, it stopped when I increased by an ounce. I realized then that I could move to 5.5 ounces. That solved the grazing problem. So, maybe it was just natural progression that I've been maintaining g the past 2-3 weeks. I don't know. Wrap in October and sweet potato to weeks ago. That's all that changed. Until the sweet potato, I was concerned because I didn't want to keep losing. I had planned to speak with my surgery team this week to ask how to make it stop. But, it just leveled out. I'm hoping that's what this is (maintenance) versus being a stall that.might one day just go away, lol. But, either way, I'm happy where I am. Now my focus is just staying here. -
How did you figure out if you had dumping syndrome?
SleeverSk replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I dont think that was dumping, you just ate to much to fast and made yourself vomit. You need to slowly move to solids. 3 weeks is early to have hair loss are you taking vitamins etc? -
Welcome to the other side of this crazy adventure of life! The first 3 weeks can be challenging bc of all the new things to learn, but around week three it seems like alot of us have that realization that this could work lol! Good luck!!

How did you figure out if you had dumping syndrome?
cheryl o replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
thats what i want to know. Today i had a cup of chicken soup, and ate too fast, had chest pain, and threw it up. Im gonna be 6 weeks post op, had RNY and the most structure food ive eaten is just chicken soup and 1egg. That pain in my chest, thats not dumping correct? Im still doing yogurt and protein drinks daily. im terrified of solid food and feel "safe " this way. Oh, and im loosing hair, started at 3 weeks post op Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app -
I had that too. I think I only had it for the first week. I didnβt take anything. Mine only lasted a few seconds and then would ease up.

One Year With Mini Gastric Bypass: My Journey, Thoughts, and Tips!
Guest replied to a topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
Man, I can't believe there's another guy with an MGB here! Thanks for posting, too. So here's what I've experienced: at 6 months or so, you start definitely having 'room' for more food - that feeling of complete satiety you feel now starts sloooowly waning. But at the same time, your body starts sending you clear signals it wants protein and veggies - and sometimes something quicker to burn, because you've dipped too low in calories. At least that's how my body talks to me, still. Google "post gastrectomy syndrome". It's kinda how we work. You get steered to something that looks like a Mediterranean diet, and your hunger will tell you if you've had enough. No hunger - stick to plan; more hunger - eat a little more, you're too low. It's very noticeable. My body wanted to stay at exactly 93.5 kg for a good while. On mornings of 93.2, I'd be hungry. Mornings on 93.8, not hungry at all. Then it decided 90ish was probably more to its taste, lost 2.2 kg/5 lbs in literally a week, just three weeks ago. Out of nowhere. Now that's where it wants to be. Again, you won't doubt the signals, that's one of the beautiful features of specifically MGB - the connection between eating and hormonal response is SUPER quick and 1:1. This might make more sense in 5 months or so, but just follow your plan, and let's talk when you get to that point. Final important thing for all MGB'ers (and maybe others, I don't know): you'll probably think "ok this is it" a lot during the journey. Hunger returns, you're having a hard time sticking to your calorie limit etc. But then it re-starts when the body is ready and it's super easy. And so on. I've had 6-7 of such start-stop experiences, and some day soon, it'll be the last. And that's fine. I'm at a good weight now. What I wanted to say: don't stress. You've got a great surgery. I felt completely normal at your stage, too - just satiated all the time Edit: just out of curiosity, how long is your bypass? Mine is 220 cm / 7.2 feet. -
One Year With Mini Gastric Bypass: My Journey, Thoughts, and Tips!

Thanks so much for posting all this. Iβm one of those rare βdudesβ here who just had the MGB 3 weeks ago tomorrow. Iβve lost 23 lbs. thatβs good I imagine. Go to Dr next week for my 1st post surgery appointment. ive been very confused as to how and what I can or should eat once I get through this initial 4 week post op period. lots of mixed messages on these forums so hearing it laid out by another guy is a big help. I would like to know that once you hit the weight that you should be at, I need to lose another 85 lbs or so, how do you βreturn to a more normal eating lifeβ and not continue to lose weight? That make sense? as I go along this new road, I will contact you if I have issues but so far I e had none of the typical post op things most folks do. by the way, I am 68 so itβs never too late to change your life. Goal is to eliminate future orthopedic issues in the lower extremities. thanks again for all this. -
Help⦠I cheated on Pre-op diet TWICE!
SleeverSk replied to MsTina1984's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I wouldnt worry to much seeing how you were only required 1 week of pre op i am guessing you are at the lower end bmi, i had hungry jacks 2 nights before surgery and didnt stick to my pre op 100% but i should have seen that as a red flag that i wasnt ready π -
Anyone else depressed after surgery?
Summermoose replied to BariJen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I felt blue for a while too! I read somewhere that any anaesthesia carries this risk and couple that with feeling tired, trying to recuperate after major surgery all the while you struggle to drink let alone eat? Itβs a perfect cocktail for those feelings to arise. I felt MUCH better a week later, and would really encourage you to reach out to your loved ones so they can support you through this π Be kind to yourself, be proud of yourself! You took a major step that took a lot of courage π -
Any April 2021 surgeries?!
Tommyjohnson@13 replied to KidaandRoux's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So my doctor never put me on a post diet. He said eat what ever you want. your gonna lose weight. April 12th and Iβm a hundred pounds down. My goal is ten more pounds. but I havenβt lost any weight in 6 weeks. I can eat a whole sandwich. But then Iβm stuffed. im active but I donβt go to the gym. seems like everyone but me had a good plan for post op -
Everyone is different, but for me the answers to both questions are a resounding YES. I can eat whatever (except excess sugar), but not at βnormalβ portions. If i had to guess, I probably eat about 1/3 of what an βnormalβ heathly, similar-sized person eats in VOLUME. But calorie-wise, its almost the same (i eat about 1800-2000 cals a day on average these days). And yeah, its not all diet food (as i sit here with espresso martini in hand and a small container of cashews i plan to eat after i drink this). I go out to eat at least once a week (more, pre-pandemic, as well as during summer with outdoor dining) and order what i want...especially now that i dont avoid carbs like the plague anymore, lol. I always have take home leftovers if my companions did not already eat my leftovers. I also drink regularly (mostly red wine or vodka with Kahlua or Clamato) You may be able to do the same, or you may not. This is something you will find out through trial and error. P.S. i was going to restaurants/parties with food at 3 post-op Granted, I barely ate anything (if at all!) those early days, but it was just about the company for me anyways. P.P.S. I am a little over 3 years out and have been maintaining below goal weight for 2.5 years. Iβm 5β2β 116.5 lbs this morning. Im relatively active. Good Luck! β€οΈ

Any April 2021 surgeries?!
Blueslily replied to KidaandRoux's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Oh my. I bet that's frustrating. I had a couple long pauses. The longest one was 2.5 weeks. I tried my best to not get too frustrated because I didnt want to trigger emotional eating in response to my frustration. Good luck. -
Any April 2021 surgeries?!
Blueslily replied to KidaandRoux's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The last few weeks my weight loss slowed some. I was able to go from 4 ounces to around 5.5 per meal. So. Perhaps eating a little more played a role. Plus, I added two starches - sweet potato and wraps. I was not eating any starch at all. Just protein and veggies. Now, I might eat some sweet potato in a day or I might eat a turkey roll up. I cant eat much of the wrap because it fills me up. That's it really. I fluctuate like .2 to .4 ounces in weight. I'm good with that. I met with the dietitian Monday and the NP. They said our bodies get to a point they slow down when they kind of get to a resting weight for us. I wanted to be like 3 pounds lower than a goal so I would have some wiggle room for fluctuating. I'm 2 pounds down and cool with it. I dont want to be any smaller in size. I dont want to look weirdly or oddly small. So. I'm good here. Congrats on only being 20 pounds away from goal. Good luck! -
I found early on that shakes were not going to be a staple for me. After 2 weeks of having 5 a day preop, followed by 4 weeks of having them multiple times a day post op I was more than done with them. I am not someone that likes to eat sweet things that often, plus, I developed some dairy issues after surgery. I tried the protein waters, but, did not like how my mouth felt afterwards. After talking with my surgeon, he is totally fine with these not being a staple in my diet. I focus on getting my protein in via food I chew. The things I turn to most often are - egg whites (I have an intolerance to whole eggs), all types of meats and seafood in all different forms cooked in a variety of ways, Quest chips, protein bars (occasionally), cheese, magic spoon cereal, beans, unflavored protein powder added to soups or fat free refried beans. I easily hit my goal of 60-80 grams a day. I do have some non dairy shakes I keep in the house for the rare times I don't have any time to grab a non shake options, but, I honestly try to avoid doing this as much as possible.

Hey There! Any December 2021 Surgery Friends?

Hey There! Any December 2021 Surgery Friends?
JamiJellybean replied to armartin98's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm scheduled for December 29! I'm in the phase where I am cautiously excited and still sort of feeling like I can't believe it's happening. I'm getting nervous and also chomping at the bit. I'm all over the place! LOL. My doctor has a protocol of 2-week strict diet before surgery. I start that on the 14th. On the 21st it goes to full liquid diet. A little nervous about that, but I know I can do it. -
Any December 2021 bypass people?

13 days until surgery and my husband comes home sick last night he says it is just allergies from moving hay for our horses I was going to sleep in the couch but he assured me it was allergies. He just sent me a text he is really sick - he had Covid end of July I am hoping it isnβt that again he says cold either way I get sick I canβt get the surgery and Iβve been in liquid for over 2 weeks now I am beyond upset and frustrated today -
strictures get progressively worse pretty quickly, to the point you can't even keep fluids down. At that point, it's an emergecy. I had two of them (at weeks 4 and π eight (not sure why that emoji is there). It only took a few days before I couldn't keep water down.

TAKE ππ» THE ππ» PHOTOS ππ»
Queen ApisM replied to GooseyGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You look amazing! What great progress. Congrats! I second what you said about taking the photos. I have been in a stall, but finally took a new set of pics and wow I could tell the difference 4 months out, and in some unexpected places! For those who don't want to do near naked pics, wear something really form fitting (ideally in colors/patterns that don't distort things/distract the eye) and then take the pics in the same outfit until you can't anymore because they are falling off. I find it is easier to compare photos when I am in the same outfit. It was quite motivating even when struggling with that obnoxious month 3 stall... -
TAKE ππ» THE ππ» PHOTOS ππ»
catwoman7 replied to GooseyGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my husband take photos of all three sides of me once a month on my surgery date until I hit maintenance 20 months later. I'm SO glad I have those photos! GooseyGirl is correct - you don't always see the difference month to month, but you can by comparing photos to ones that were taken three or four months earlier. Plus I love having the photo documentation of my journey! -
Baristatic App?
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If your surgeon participates, they can get a code and you can link your account to them so they have access to all your information directly. If not, there is a report function that will email you a .pdf of weight, steps, and some very detailed nutrition data, including about a week of daily logs.
