    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi Charlie. Thank you, congratulations on yours as well. Yes, it is very strange for me to struggle eating (drinking) enough, since my struggles have always been the opposite, to try to eat less! I’ve been watching lots of YouTube videos to be reassured that this is normal and that eventually it will get easier. I haven’t started my vitamins yet. I’ve been instructed to wait until the 18th which will be a few days before I start the puréed stage. That could be a reason why I’m feeling so week, so I’m actually looking forward to starting them. I’ve been sipping on a protein shake all morning, but am getting antsy and am wanting to get out in the sun and do some walking. I think that’s probably a good sign. How have you been with getting your walking in?

    Food Before and After Photos

Two lunches this week before and after (when restriction hit). I’m 6months and almost 2 weeks post op. I’m curious if this is considered a lot (?).

    Medicare

So I had a lap band - approved by Fed BCBS in 2011, they also approved the removal of it 2021. Now it’s 2022 and Medicare is my primary and FedBCBS is second. They said will just piggy back from what Medicare won’t cover. Anyone here have experience with Medicare? Wait times once the pkg is submitted? Any info would help. Just getting started, and going through the process 3 mo dietician- psych appt etc. even though I have Gastroparesis now. Thanks

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I had rny on 3/1. I’m eating everything. Just got the ok to eat raw veggies and I couldn’t wait to have a salad. Somethings are too much for me - like grilled chicken (too tough) and seafood - but most things I’m handling well. Still staying away from the bad foods tho. Soups still go down a lot easier and better.

    Loose Skin

Further to this, i’ve been told as little as a 10lb LOSS after plastics may result in less-than-desired results. While regular skin tissue is more elastic and “shrinkable”, scar tissue is not. BUT… full disclosure, i was impatient and had my procedures 6 months after i reached goal (and TBH, was at a “stable weight” for only the 3 months prior to surgery as i kept losing weight for a bit after goal). Im 3.5 years post wls and 2+ years post plastics now…and so far so good. YMMV.
  6. Mandatory disclaimer: we are all different and lose (or gain) weight at different rates. with that said, and since you asked (in lbs): 235 start of 2 week pre op diet 138 at 6 months post op (-97lbs) 127 at 7 months (goal) 119 this morning at 3.5 years post op P.S. I’m 5’2” for reference.

    Hianal Hernia Surgery

No, I’m still waiting on a surgery date. ☹️ The hernia was suspected by my surgeon and showed up in pre/procedure testing. I had been hoping for tomorrow, 4/11, as my surgery date, but obviously that is not going to happen. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m thinking seriously of waiting till June 10th when school is done. I’m slightly apprehensive about piggybacking the hernia recovery with bypass recovery as my original plan was to return to school rather quickly (3-4 days) after both. Right now the ball is in the surgeon’s court and I’m waiting.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Not full time solids, but I do have on occasion. Random things like a like a piece of chicken from one of my kids Chipotle bowls, a (very small) piece of pizza during a birthday party, stuff like that. My rny was 3/1 and I am almost 6 weeks out. Not sure if it helps, but my dietician said rny heal faster than sleeve so we normally progress sooner. Sent from my SM-G781U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  9. I stayed one night but i don’t think i had a choice in the matter (or did i? I dunno…i didn’t bother to ask). i didn’t mind though cuz (1) the hospital bed was recline-y so it was easier to get in and out of bed for walks…and the endless halls were useful for that (2) i was grateful for the night nurse’s assistance for those first trips to the bathroom to pee (3) for the little bit of peace of mind that i was surrounded by medical professionals Just In Case.

    Loose Skin

I think I can speak on behalf of most of the long-timers on here in that yes, we dreaded the loose skin at first, but we'd take it any day of the week over being morbidly obese again. ANY DAY! I lost over 200 lbs, so I had a lot of loose skin. It was easy to hide in clothes, though (I'll post a picture below). I'd just wear long-ish tops with 3/4 or full-length sleeves and tummy-control leggings (although some thing like Spanx would have worked as well). I had my removed because it started to drive me crazy. My abdominal skin would slap up against me when I exercised - ugh. But yes - it was really just cosmetic, and like I said, no one but me (and my husband) knew it was there. skin doesn't weigh very much. Unless you get a lot of lipo done, too, we're talking less than five lbs. I think I "lost" maybe four lbs when I had it removed (which unfortunately came right back on!) some insurance policies will cover removal if it's causing medical problems, like chronic rashes, that don't respond to conventional treatments. I never had any issues with anything like that, so I paid out of pocket. anyway, here I am BEFORE I had plastic surgery. I had a TON of excess skin, but as you can see, it's pretty easy to hide it if you're wearing the right clothes.

Hi Charlie, congrats on the sleeve. I had the same problem for 7 weeks, I had some swelling and struggled to get liquids down in any amount. Try warm drinks, warm milky coffee and tea, Bovril and oxo are good. Cold shakes and ice lollies, Britvic Tomato juice really helped me, its sugar free and 47 cals for 250mls. All count towards your quota and some days I only managed 1/3rd of this, it gets better in time. Now at 4 and a half months I can take 2 gulps at a time. Is it wind pain or are you taking large gulps, take tiny sips. I have Wind relief tablets from Boots that are great at calming excessive burping type wind. Just do the best you can every day and you will get there. You are still healing. I found my team at Spire were very helpful, call yours if you need reassurance

    Day Of Surgery

A week before surgery, I had to shower in a surgical detergent every day. It wasnt the most pleasant body and hair wash. I got to the hospital at 8 am and got checked in. By 12 noon I was dressed in my gown, sexy socks and cap and being wheeled down to Anaesthetics. I was quickly put under and woke up in my room with a drip and the oddest sensation in my lower legs, I had plastic boots on that pulsed. It stops thrombosis.

Hi everyone. I’m so glad I’ve found this forum. I’ve just had my sleeve on 4th April so nearly a week ago. Currently struggling with my liquid intake, I get terrible wind pains when drinking. Any hints or tips and is this normal?
  14. Hi, I have started my liquid diet but my dietitian wanted me to add 2 cups of vegetables and one teaspoon of oil as well as the 3 meal replacement shakes and 2 litres of water I don't know how I'm going to fit the 2 L of water but I'm trying😐

    Regrets...anyone?

Have they checked to see if you have a stricture ? They thought I had but it all settled down at about 8 weeks out.

    Dehydration after surgery

The dehydration occurs if you’re not getting in or aren’t close to getting in your 64oz/2L. Some people struggle at first because of post surgical swelling (hurts to swallow) & for many it’s a new habit to drink that much &/or to sip slowly. I always drank a lot of water so I probably went into surgery being long term hydrated. For the first 24hrs after surgery my surgeon pumped me full of fluids. I had a lot of swelling & wouldn’t have drunk 1/2 cup of any liquid. Slept a lot & wasn’t interested in consuming anything. Day 2 maybe drank a cup but peed all day long. Day 3 could have a little more & each subsequent day I was getting closer to goal. Probably took a good week to be reach or be close to goal. Was never dehydrated. Sip all day long. Set an alarm on your phone so every few minutes you sip. Keep fluids beside you at all times including by your bed (sip whenever you wake through the night - I still do). Some people find ice cold liquids easier to drink. I preferred them to be warm - more soothing. My first mug of green tea was glorious. Remember your fluid goals include all the liquids you consume: shakes, water, herbal or green teas, broths, soups, etc.

    Slow Losers Club…..officially *sigh*

Glad to find this thread. I’m definitely a slow loser and I’m trying really hard to stay encouraged. I was 255 my day of surgery. 6 weeks out I weighed in at 249. Not even 10 pounds. And I’m doing everything that I was instructed to do. Staying on the diet, watching my portions, tracking my meals, the 20 20 20, getting the right amount of protein, drinking enough fluid, exercising every day. I am honestly very discouraged to not see any real movement. But it is encouraging to know that I’m not alone. But I’ve definitely had moments where I wondered, what was the purpose of going through all this and getting the surgery, if almost 2 months out, I’m not even at 15 pounds weight loss? The doctors and dietitian say I’m not doing anything wrong and to be patient, but I feel it’s much easier to say that than it is to be dealing with it. Just had to vent that. Now I’m in tears smh. But I’ll keep swimming.

    What's Your Food Nemesis?

Bread was always my PMT craving. Peanut paste, Promite, honey, cucumber, apricot jam were my go to toppings. Sometimes I felt like a whole loaf wouldn’t satisfy. At almost 3 years I still don’t eat bread (too heavy). Fortunately I don’t get the PMT cravings any more. Even though I generally avoid sugar, I find desserts can be a real temptation. Last night I watched my family eat jelly, custard & pavlova with fruit & whipped cream (early Easter & s-I-l’s birthday dinner) & fought the voice in my head saying a little serving won’t hurt. I won over the voice but …

    Question about Labs

Curious if others have had nicotine blood tests? I was a smoker 21+ years ago but quit. Ive had 2 nicotine tests already and I was just told the other day that I had to get another 1 week before surgery. I may have been told but dont remember, why is this necessary?

    May 2022 surgery?

Good luck to all of you. I had my bariatric sleeve on March 10 and let me tell you all, best decision I ever made. I already lost 26 pounds. I was 215, my advise to all of you will be 3 or 4 hours after the surgery get out of the bed and walk. Walk as much as you can, so all the gases come out.

    Regrets...anyone?

I’m 7 weeks post op and have all the regrets. I can’t stay hydrated and nothing seems to sit well even fluids. Can’t handle protein drinks or any of the water add ins. IVs keeping me hydrated at this point. I am hungry but can’t eat and have almost no physical strength anymore. Say it gets better.
  23. I havent had the sleeve surgery yet but its supposed to be sometime mid May or end of May. Still waiting on scheduling to call me. I havent started regretting it yet since Ive not had surgery but I have gone back and forth numerous times of asking myself do I really want to do this. Sometimes its yes and sometimes its no, I believe my mind is just trying to talk me out of it because its the "unknown" as to how my body will react. I have to say honestly I am very fortunate as I am not on pills for high blood pressure, diabetes or anything else. Im just morbidly obese (I hate those words lol) What I do have is a knee injury from about 15 yrs ago that I have severe osteoarthritis from and I was just told this past week that I need a knee replacement! Im only 53 so I said no, whats my other options. I was told therapy and cortisone/steroid shots in the knee to maybe postpone it. I was also told at my current weight I could not be a candidate because I am too big *sighs*. So Im seeing this surgery as beneficial and something I need to do for my overall health, knee issues and I still have a young son at home who needs me to live an active life (he's 11). If I get in the muddy grub mindset I try to direct my thoughts in another direction. Not saying that after surgery will be different or that I may not start regretting it but I have goals I need to see through to the end if at all possible I have heard the same thing about the gas pains but Ive also heard people say they took Gas X and walked alot and that seems to help dissipate it. Hoping to stay positive going down this road and your words from your experience is very helpful. Thank you for sharing!
  24. I've talked to a few people personally and 2 out of 3 said they got really dehydrated and had to get it IV Fluids more then once days after surgery. I'm trying to figure out how to prevent this from happening. I know drink fluids but they said they were but still got dehydrated. Any tricks I need to know. I'm 2 week out from surgery 😬
  25. I had my sleeve done in April of 2012. Had decent success until 2018 when I gained ALL of the weight back. I am now 2 weeks away from getting a re-sleeve. It is with a differnt surgeon this time due to the fact my original surgeon won't do it. I am very nervous. I worry about the actual surgery. Mostly because I already have staples & such I expect it to be more difficult. I know there isn't too much on this forum about getting a re-sleeve but I was wondering if anyone has had any personal experiences with this. Wondering if it will be as successful as the 1st was oringally. NOTE: I have made the personal decision not to have the bypass as an alternative. My doctor says that it is the usual revisionj choice but I am even more scared of that surgery!
