    Medicare Approval

I did not attend a seminar at the time I saw the doctor. I am going tomorrow evening. I am on Medicaid right now but go to Medicare in October. I saw the doctor several months ago and have done some of the tests but what is holding me up is some tooth repair which I had to save up 2600.00 for. That and all tests will be completed in October. I have not been told anything from his office about what medicare needs. Guess maybe I may find out tomorrow night or I will call them. My weight has been the same for several years within 10 - 15 pounds either way. I lost 40 3 years ago but that was due to leukemia. I have since put that back on. Yours seemed to be a snap, hope mine will be too !! Good luck I'm adding you as a friend if you don't mind, let me know how it goes for you

    Depo-Provera

I too gained a lot of weight from the shot and I decided to stop doing it before I had my surgery. It was also giving me migraines which I couldn't handle. However, there is an increased risk of blood clots when you use any sort of birth control, but if you don't smoke and you remain active after your surgery, like getting up to walk frequently, you should be ok.

    Where to start?

Hi. I just found the forum tonight and have been doing some reading but wondered if maybe you can help me find the info I need (if it's already here somewhere) or can fill me in. I won't bore you with the endless details of the weight problem as I am sure many of you have been through it. Leave it to say I've totally and completely had it. I am at a loss and wondering if surgery is the only option left for me so I am trying to figure it out. What I am not sure of is how to even begin that process. I'm in Calgary and noticed some other posters from here. I've also noticed different methods of payment (through health care and paying personally) so I am not sure what is what there. My doctor is myopic and won't hear of anything but Atkins which is fine if it works for you, but it doesn't for me so he's no help on info. I am looking for a new doctor so am open to suggestions there if anyone knows someone who is up on the surgical or any other options to weight loss. For the most part, I wonder if there is info re: the process here I can read. How do you start determining if this is the answer? What is involved in being accepted? What types of surgery do they offer here (I've heard of lapbands but until tonight didn't think you could get them here. Also heard of staples and other more involved procedures)? How long does it take from the time you decide to go this route until it's done? Are there any restrictions (age, size, whatever)? Why do I see some people travel to other places to have their surgery? So if anyone can fill me in or point me to some threads I would sure appreciate it.

    Bcbs rio tinto

Has anyone had experience with BCBS of Utah and RIO Tinto employee? They want 12 months supervised weight loss by a physician before they consider surgery even if you have serious health problems.:smile2:
  6. Hello to everyone. This is my first post. I started here because I just made up my mind that I want to have the lap band. I haven't even gone to a seminar yet, but I have been researching different weight loss surgeries for months now. I am worried now because I haven't been on a supervised weight loss program for 6 months, but from past experience, I can't do it. I looked in to this about 4 years ago when I was 6 feet tall and 268 pounds and they told me I "wasn't fat enough". Also, the doctor was trying to force gastric bypass surgery on me, which I definitely did not want. So here I am 4 years later, weighing 335 pounds and miserable. Once I go to my seminar, if they require me to start a six month diet program I will be very disappointed. I was hoping to have my surgery before the end of the year. But, I'm joining this group for support just in case I do get the bad news. By knowing there are others in the same boat as me will help. Any suggestions or stories that may give me some insight would be appreciated. And again, hello!
  7. I have finally decided to put myself back on my priority list. I know it's very "Obrah'ish" but for weeks I've let other things take over my life. The holidays are over and I've painfully thrown away all the yummy Snacks in the house (except the ones my skinny daughter has hidden from me, bless her). I've restocked my shelves with the food I know works for me and I've started exercising every day. I had a small fill last week and almost immediately noticed a difference. So, I think I'm all set to see what the next few weeks have in store. There's nothing like just cleaning house and giving yourself a fresh start. I was stuck at 219 lbs for 10 weeks (at least no gain!) and the scale finally moved. Looking at my chart, I'm still doing better with the lab-band than I was doing on Weight Watchers alone at the same time. So all is good. Still have a long way to go but I'm up for the challenge. I'm not going to look back, only forward. God bless you all!!! You all give such encouragement and wisdom.
  8. Hi everyone! I'm just starting my process. I received my referral from my PCP and have an appointment for the seminar and a "bod pod" test on March 2nd. I did call me insurance who gave me their requirements. I see that alot of you had to see several specialists. Is that a requirement of the surgeon? I have BCBS of IL and it states I need a psych eval, but not cardio, etc. Also, this is a part of requirements for surgery thru insurance: Documentation of active participation in a comprehensive, non-surgical program of weight reduction for at least six (6) months, occurring within the twenty-four (24) months prior to the proposed surgery and preferably unaffiliated with the bariatric surgery program. (NOTE: The initial BMI at the beginning of a weight reduction program will be used to meet the BMI criteria for the definition of morbid obesity used in this policy.) A program will be considered appropriate if it includes the following components: Nutritional therapy, which may include medical nutrition therapy such as a very low calorie diet such as MediFast and Optifast or a recognized commercial diet-based weight loss program such as Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc. Behavior modification or behavioral health interventions. Counseling and instruction on exercise and increased physical activity. Ongoing support for lifestyle changes to make and maintain appropriate choices that will reduce health risk factors and improve overall health. I have been seeing my PCP every month since OCtober and my weight has always been discussed and she gave me her advice on how to lose weight, etc. Will that qualify as the first 5 months in 6 month participation or is more required?

    Sleeve vs bypass?

I got the sleeve because I had 2 co-workers get the bypass and they just seem miserable. It just seems most people I have come in contact with was so unhappy after the bypass. While I wanted a change from the constant struggle with my excess weight I did not want to be unhappy. Beside all the medical reasons ...as I am sure you have researched the differences. The bypass is so much more complicated. Many more complications can occur. One big problem is the lack of ability to absorb the Vitamins and nutrients that is needed. The sleeve for me was the best decision ever! My weight loss results are exactly the same as the co-workers. I do not have the troubles they experience. I live a happy normal life. Socially it is easy to adjust ( after the first few months). Over all it comes down to the individual really. The surgeons expectations goes as follows: after the first 2 years bypass patients are expected to lose on average: 60-80% of their excess weight , sleeve patients 50-70% of the excess weight. However, that too is up to the patient. At my 5 month check up I had already lost 40% of my excess weight. I said all that to say..... If you follow the surgeons instructions and get the most out the of the sleeve you can have equal results..... Best wishes on your decision and surgery!

Am I losing as I should?

What have you been eating? You should have been on a liquid diet at first. If you are eating a lot of carbs for your mushie foods, it will slow down your weight loss.

    "Rebirth" one month ago

I am new also. I am looking at the band as a miracle for me. I have been overweight most of my life and now I realize that I have the chance to change things. I guess reality hit home when my kids were dicussing my surgery and made the statement that they had never known mom without a weight problem. I really want to be a happy healthy mom and nurse!
  13. I haven't been around in a while because I've been pre-occupied with my pregnancy. I called my band surgeon's office as soon as I found out I was pregnant and they suggested that I have an un-fill as soon as possible, due to the potential for slippage with morning sickness. (which, by the way I still have morning sickness, evening sickness...) My OB also wanted me to have an un-fill because she was concerned about getting proper nutrition. And of course, due to me having an un-fill at 6 weeks pregnant, I have now gained 12 lbs in only 10 weeks (I'm 16 weeks now).

    Pregnant with the lap band!

I got pregnant with my 3rd son shortly after having my first fill and 4 months after having band surgery. My ob/gyn and midwife both said that as long as a could eat to keep my fill since it was the only thing keeping from gaining an excessive amount of weight. I weight 270, developed hypertension, had a c-section and had a 10 lb with son #2. Son #3 has very fast, delivered by midwife 1 hour after I arrived at hospital, no c-section, he weighed 7 lbs and I weighed 210 when he was born. At my 6 six check up, he weighed 10 lbs and I weighed 180. Ana

    Gastric Sleeve & Roller Derby

I have absolutely no help for you whatsoever, but I did want to chime in and say, "Good for you!" I am a HUGE fan of the Nashville Rollergirls and I think it is awesome what those ladies can do. One of my goals once I get sleeved and have lost enough weight to get my balance back on track is to get back out on the rink. I am certainly not derby-worthy, but I used to love to skate when I was a teen. Watching the derby for the past couple of years has made me long to get back on the skates--and not those yukky roller blades. REAL four wheel roller skates. What team do you skate with? Lisa

    "Rebirth" one month ago

Welcome! I was banded on Sept 30th. I have a new attitude toward my health and toward food. I have done a bit of self reflecting throughout this whole period. It is the best thing that I have done. Congrats on the weight loss!

When did you stop losing weight?

A few things.... you are lucky that you haven't had to work really hard so far...haha. I had to push push push, eat low carb etc to get to a normal BMI. People around you will always think you are "too skinny" but eventually they forget what you used to look like and they won't see it that way anymore. Excess skin looks like fat. You can get thin as a rail and still have excess skin. I was at a healthy weight even a bit heavier than goal, I consider the remaining "vanity pounds" and each person has to decide what is worth it to them - lower weight might be harder to maintain.

    Scale lying?

Clothes sizing is weird. Also- when you lose weight you might lose it in different ways than you did before. The same thing happened to me. Your fat redistributes around your body, you lose weight from one part of your body but not others, etc.
  19. Hey ladies! I wanted to get some opinions or hope someone has had a similar issue... At my highest weight of 404.8, I never used to get a period. Went and saw my OB thinking PCOS was a possibility.. She ruled that out because really my only symptoms were my weight and irregular periods.. did tests and testosterone was normal. so no PCOS. my periods were simply irregular because i was too fat. put me on birth control, got a period every month... I had surgery on October 31, 2016 and that was the last day I have taken birth control. after surgery i was in too much pain to care about the birth control and after the anesthesia wore off I decided to just stay off of it to see if I was regulated. Turns out, I was. I got a period every single month right at the same time every month. I was back to normal! Well, in April I missed my period. Didn't think I was pregnant at all. My period was coming the 30th of every month and April 30th it didnt come.. It did come May 12.. so i thought maybe it was just adjusting to a different time. So I expected it on June 12. well I missed it again this month. Again, not pregnant. saw my OB and she seems to think my body is in shock from surgery and having lost so much so fast that it is off kilter now. Has anyone else had this happen? periods regulate, then go all haywire? HW- 404.8 SW- 362.9 CW- 231.4
  20. So to those out there who have gone through this, how did you establish your goals in terms of weight loss, and excercise. I just picked a random number of what I'd like to weigh based on a point in my life in which I was happy with my figure. I'm not certain that it's the best way to go about this, as I was actually really unhealthy at the time. Also, any advice on having a scale and how frequent you should weigh yourself? I find myself obsessing to see if I've lost weight, not celebrating that I've made an accomplishment, but rather not really trusting the scale that there is any way that I could have lost "x." I've had very little input from my doctor at this point. Also, what are realistic goals for excercise? I had mentioned to my family that I had joined a group activity with a goal of walking "x" miles by a certain day, and my dad commented on the fact that it was too low of a goal. What are realistic goals, or rather how do you go about setting them?

    Bcbsaz?

I have another insurance but at the seminars you can attend they will tell you what each insurance requires. Or you can call Banner Bariatric/Bridges Weight Loss/True Results along with other doctors offices. Most of the office people are really knowledgeable. I used St Lukes out of PHX but St Likes in Tempe has a program too.

    4th fill

Ok, I just got back from getting my fourth fill...I am filled to 2.75 now...The dr said that I could not get another fill until after I had lost about another 30-40 lbs...Said that he had me as tight as I could go right now and that the opening was only about the size of a pencil lead...I asked about the green tea and if it could be counted as water intake and he said for sure that anything this is water based can count as water...I asked him if I was in the slow range for my weight loss right now and he said that I was actually right above normal...Said that normal for right now is about 45 and I am at 52...So I guess that I wont be going to see the dr for quite a long while...Another 30-40 lbs would put me about 80-90 lbs for a loss so that would be great...He said that my pouch was looking great and to not worry about my calorie intake as long as it stayed under 1000 a day...Said the more that I put into my body that the more that I had to work to burn it off...Also said that the "starvation mode" was a myth and to not worry about it...So, this was a different dr that I saw today and he had different things to say than my regular dr...I guess I can go ahead and try his ideas and see how they treat me...
  23. Aww- what a sweet comment by your dad! I know exactly what he means too. We lose the weight but we gain our lives back and have more energy, charisma, and happiness! And yes appreciate your time with your dad and moments like that- I only wish my dad could see how far I've come. ok- tear-tear on my part. Congrats on your success- you are so close to goal! Smiles to you!
  24. I'm feeling a little down at the moment because in the first couple of weeks I lost 5 kgs and now I'm on soft diet and under 500 cal a day, exercising for about 40 min a day I'm loosing super slow about 700 grams a week. I don't understand why so slow. The main thing I struggle with is water intake. Any advise highly appreciated
