  1. I would not put it off. Most family members and friends do not understand and it is their automatic response to try to put you off because WLS is TOO EXTREME. That was one of the reasons why the only person I told was my husband. It is quite interesting that there is a lot of research now that says that WLS is probably the only way that most obese people will be successful in losing and keeping off their excess weight. Do what you need to do for you. If your family support you great, if they don't then they will soon get over it. Once they see you eating normal food, losing weight and being happy then they may even decide to do it themselves.
  2. mzz I dont really think it is the band surgery. It is the weight loss in general. I say this because before I was banded a couple of years ago I lost weight on my own and was losing pretty rapidly and the same thing happened.

    Approved & Husband Acting Funny

My hubby got scared. He told me, "don't go getting skinny and decide to leave me!" When I told him I wanted to be skinny so he could pick me up and ravage me against a wall, his tune totally changed!! Funny thing is now that I've lost most of my excess weight, he's suddenly lifting weights! I guess he still has that promise in the back of his mind!! I'm not quite small enough for him to pick me up like that just yet, but I can't wait!!

    Approved & Husband Acting Funny

I love that he decided to start lifting weights. Sounds like you getting your health together, has made him start to "think".
  5. So, I met with my surgeon for the first time today and everything went ok except that he said he would rather do the bypass surgery instead of the sleeve. He said it's ultimately my choice, that he will do either for me but that because of how much weight I need to lose he suggests the bypass. I have been doing a lot of research about the two and honestly I don't want to do the bypass. The sleeve seems like a better fit for me and I don't really care what the statistics say because I am not a statistic. I am just me. I know the sleeve isn't going to magically take away all my problems, it's a tool. A tool that is going to help lead me towards a better, healthier me. Sorry for the rant. It's just been an emotional few days. Did anyone else get prescribed anti depressants before surgery? I've never taken them before and they are not required. Not sure if I'm going to take them or not.

Hawaii here I come in a size 8!

Thank you!!! I have stalls all the time lol I'll bounce around the same couple pounds for a week or two then bam I lose 4 or 5 then stall again. I started tracking my weight through my fitness pal and found a pattern.. It's how I lose which took so much pressure off. I am sure you will have a blast in February. I have been losing around 10 pounds a month. I was a low bmi when I started so it's slow going but it's going try tracking to see approximately how much you are losing per month. I figured I would be 4 pounds less than I am now when I got to Hawaii so my tracking was pretty darn close!

Hawaii here I come in a size 8!

One of my goals is to get up on a surfboard (hence my forum profile name). I've been to Hawaii twice. Once after losing a significant amount of weight on Medifast years ago and once at my highest weight when I couldn't even walk on the beach. I can't wait to return for a third trip. You look like you are having a blast!
  8. Anyone have any suggestions on how to keep the weight off after a fill... It seems that the weight goes down right after a fill and while on liquids for three days and then as soon as you go back on regular food... the weight starts inching back up... The first week after the fill always give me a good 5 to 8 pound drop... My last fill was my third and I had great restriction, even fluids were a little rough... It has loosened up a little but still full after about 1 cup of food... And once again, the scale is creeping up again.

    Tired of hearing about it

Thanks so much guys - it helps to know I am not alone in the way I am feeling. Do you have any other advise on what to expect once I have the surgery? When did you actually start seeing the weight loss? I know it is one thing to see a number fall on a scale - but when did you actually FEEL like you had lost weight? I have been larger than I should be all of my life. The smallest I have ever been in my adult life was a 14/16. I am now in a 20/22 - though I tend to always wear shirts even larger than that so they dont cling to me - as though people cant tell I am fat! lol. Oh lets put on even bigger clothes to hide the fact!! I am afraid of the Water thing - I dont drink enough liquid now - dont know how I am going to be able to get down 64+ ounces a day! I drink a cup of coffee in the morning and then maybe a glass of tea at night - I am just not much of a drinker at all! How did you make sure you were/are getting enough water?
  10. Hey guys! I am new to this forum. First let me say that it is so inspiring to see how supportive y'all are with each other. I am so excited to get this surgery and feel some support from other people going through the same thing. I'm 23. I got the lap band 3 years ago. At this point the sleeve hadnt been approved yet. And before surgery I was 250. After surgery I really got on the bandwagon, but I just couldn't lose the weight. I struggled with trying to eat constantly. I threw up constantly. Even Protein that I was supposed to eat, I couldn't get down. It was depressing. It was enbarassing. I couldn't go out to eat without staying in the bathroom throwing up all my food. It was awful. I got down to 230 and that's where I stayed. After 2 years my stomach started growing over my band and I had to get all the Fluid taken outta my band and I've gained all my weight back and more. I am now today July 4th at 265 and these past few months have been the most depressing of my life. One night last month I laid awake at night and couldn't stop thinking about getting weight loss surgery again. I considered bypass but that's just too major for me and idk about having children after that. The sleeve sounds perfect! I really hate the band. I hate throwing up constantly and being on the bathroom at all social occasions cause I can't get food down. Are there any quirks I need to know about? Foods that make you sick or what happens if you eat too fast? I'm waiting to hear back on my insurance but Im pretty sure they're going to approve it. I've already called and asked. So I'm very excited!! And I can't wait! I just hope I don't have to do the 6 month criteria. I look forward to the support from y'all and I'm excited to start this journey!

    I know everyone has them

Happened to me.. I was stuck on 263 for 2+ weeks and the scale will fluctuate up and back to 263 despite solely eating protein, shakes and working out. I honestly believe that the body is really smart and starts adjusting to the calorie deficiency some more than others this is why some people have to work twice as hard to lose. I finally broke my stall and I’m down to 258 my fear now is that I will again sit on that number for another week or two. I know this isn’t a marathon but I just have way too much weight to lose and I deprive myself way too much to be losing at the speed of the average joe even after a surgery. Hope you break your stall soon. Good luck!
  12. i love reading everyone's comments to each other, because I can't believe how many emotions i can go thru in 1 day! I'm excited, nervous, anxious... and have felt the OMG moments of removing part of me. BUT... i'm down 25 lbs on pre surgery diet, and i can't wait for some help to continue this. I can't even remebr the last time i lost weight. I'm on my protein shake countdown before surgery, and I try not to think about it, but here i am. i have to be at the hospital early wednesday morn, and I'm first on the or list for the day. wish me luck....

    Drastic weight fluctuation?

50 pounds was post and pre op. I lost 20 according to the post op scale, and miraculously gained it all back in a matter of days... I’m not sure I could count 20 pounds as all water weight
  14. Well, I'm still gathering paperwork and I have a lot more than when I started. However, while I managed to come up with almost 7 years of records saying I was overweight. They don't go in order, I'm missing one year. Do you think this will have a big impact on my insurance's decision? I have medicare. Fae
  15. Great news @Puddles. I remember eating a lot of cream of wheat during that phase. Soon it will all be a distant memory. Even though you can eat anything you will still be looking for something other than chicken or fish. I may start laying eggs soon. Next step is not getting discouraged when the dreaded 3 week stall hits. Just about everyone stalls somewhere between week 2 and 4. It seems like it lasts forever but just keep to the plan and the weight will start coming off again.
  16. I am 3.5 mths post sleeve and am also having back pain. Chiropractor says week mussels and my posture and weight is distributed different with my weight loss. No pain meds for me but I am getting mesage and chiro. New_Me 2019

    Pre-op diet

Ian on my second week doing the optifast. I have been asked to stay on it for three weeks. It's been 12 days and I'm only down 12pds. The first week I lost 9 and this second week I'm only down 3. I'm frustrated at this point because I only have 3 out of the 4 optifast and I still can't manage to get the weight down.

Drinking protein fills me quick. Wow, a month, can u notice the weight change yet ~Bing~
  19. I had a lapband for 3 years. I LOVED IT AND WAS SO SUCCESSFUL WITH IT! IT WAS SUCH A PHENOMENAL TOOL! Unfortunately, I had some serious GI problems which resulted in a complete GI blockage. I was hospitalized to have the blockage and lapband removed. Because of these problems, I am no longer a candidate for lapband. And, my surgeon feels that the sleeve would also not be a good choice. (WIthout my wonderful lapband tool, I have gained much of the weight back.) I am looking for anyone who might have gone to Roux en Y after lapband and any guidance, opinions and advice you might have. Thank you.
  20. This is an interesting little article, very true. http://www.personalbestpersonaltraining.com/health-fitness-truth-blog/ Mr Jachut struggles mightily with the exercise but sedentary all day thing. Its work dictated and personality driven for him, as it is for many, desk jobs are killers but he doesnt like exercise (he didnt even need a lapband for his eating habits, he's a great eater. But due to his chronic lack of activity he needs to eat very very little and he couldnt do it alone) . But it always amazes me how many people say I'm not losing weight but I walk for half an hour a day. Everyone has to start somewhere, but for exercise to really be effective, you have to get serious about it. And I think one of the biggest challenges with WLS is not to become a skinny fat person. Fast fast weight loss is not good. You're losing muscle. If you ever want that curvy, fit look, you need to take it slower and work on keeping your muscles.
  21. If I may ask are your mother and brother having weight issues too? Unless they are paying for it, I would say they have no say so in you getting lapband or not. And as my doctor said. yes you can loose the weight, but does it stay off. Your brother will monitor a diet for the rest of your life? I know from my own family , that when they saw me after I had lost some weight, that I looked "too thin" and I should eat cake too slow it down. But she went on to explain for so long all the family has been large and that's the perception we all have of each other and to see one that now looks different, . I did back out once in my head I wasn't ready, but I rescheduled and worked on myself and my reasons, health and I went through with it, and at first it will be hard to make the adjustments, but pretty soon you will see the results. good luck

    Seiriously annoyed!!

She OBVIOUSLY doesn't realize the band is just a TOOL! Just because she now has the band in place it won't magically make the excess weight disappear. I'd be willing to be she will be the first one to complain that the band didn't work for her. How irritating when there are many out there who want the band yet can't have it done because their insurance won't approve it, and here's this nitwit who has the band and doesn't use it to their advantage. What a waste.

    HAPPY VALENTINES

Wow that is amazing. I'm so hungry I feel like I will never lose weight. I'm at a 16 now
  24. I agree with most of the above. But I differ a bit with diet, I've always been a carb eater and I've still been successful. But key is, that however you do it, you make a permanent lifestyle change that results in a better diet containing fewer calories. Exercise is a biggie. Serious exercise! Flexibility and an ability to realise the band is a tool, people are fallible and that there's no point panicking about falling off the wagon on hitting a plateau. Its the ability to dig in and keep going when these things happen that's important, some people are in a tizz at the slightest disruption to their textbook 2lb per week and let it throw them. You WILL plateau and you MAY be a slow loser. I was a slow loser, so what? My weight is just as gone as anyone else's.
  25. Your gas pain is normal and it will go away. Walking every chance you get will help dissipate it. Also, I took gas x strips and they helped. Be sure to continue to drink your water (small sips) constantly. Don't be too concerned with weight loss right now (even though you are losing a lot) as this is a time for healing. Anything lost is a bonus during this phase. Hope the gas gets better. Take care.
