    Gastric bypass risks.

@@Cdominguez I am really leaning towards gastric bypass surgery, I heard of many people getting the sleeve, then years later getting a revision for bybass.

From RNY to DS = CT to CA

Hi Mimanney, I did go to see a surgeon in NYC but he wanted $75,000.00 up front and when he found out I was self pay, basically said no, I won't do it. He was lacking in the professional area as well, answered a personal phone call during my $300.00 10 minute consultation and then stayed in the room talking on the phone. Anyway, I was recommended this surgeon by a specialist whose opinion I trust. I have expressed my concern with his wonderful office staff. They just keep reassuring me that people travel alone from all over the world to see him and do very well. But as far as any other surgeons that can perform a revision to a DS in my area, there are none. Thanks for your reply. SN
  3. Hi All, I'm scheduled to have my revision surgery on August 7, 2015. I have Dr. Rabkin. I'm traveling alone across country from CT to CA. HELP! Anyone can relate? What do I do? Strange city. No one to run to the pharmacy for me. Have to stay 4-5 days in hospital. Will be open, not laparoscopic. Argh. What about complications? What if I have a meltdown? Having the hardest time finding an affordable place to stay, Dr's office of no help. Any advice, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks NurseSmart
  4. Aetna took about a week to approve my revision. First they requested more of my history. Then they followed up with the surgeon about my hospital stay. I was stressing but it worked out ok. Good luck.
  5. Doctor Scarborough was recommended to me by several coworkers and my doctor. I'm having a band to sleeve revision. Was approved by insurance and now waiting to schedule my surgery. Good luck!

    Gastritis

I've had some pretty intense bouts of gastritis but lately it's been hard to control. I take 40mg omemprezole daily, 150mg ranitidine with meals, tums in the morning, and carafate drink with flare ups. I currently have a flare up and none of its helping. The pain comes in burning waves and sometimes is so intense I wanna cry. I also get "hunger" symptoms like irritability, shakiness, and dizzyness. I used to mistaken this for low blood sugar but know now it's just stomach acid. Anywho... has anyone had stubborn gastritis that hasn't responded to the above treatment? Any idea what can be added ? I know that they do a revision to bypass for stubborn gerd, but I havnt heard much about gastritis. And only being 11 months out I don't think docs are even considering it. I'm curious what other treatments are available.
  7. THAT I agree with too! I was a failed lapband patient and the first surgeon I went to regarding a revision essentially "poo poo'd" the sleeve for me since he claimed it was only restrictive like the band and would only discuss the gastric bypass with me. I went along at first... but I didn't like his NUT and a few other things made me seek a different surgeon. The practice I went to ultimately presented both options - sleeve and bypass as "good options" for me, but clearly their practice is heavily focused on sleeve so I felt confident about that. Seems like it is really ideal if the surgeon "believes" in your choice of procedures!
  8. @@Lapbandster My band to sleeve surgery went just fine. The surgery was about 1 hour longer than just the sleeve surgery because they had to remove the band first. Scar tissue builds up around the band and port so they have to carefully remove it. My biggest pain post-op was the incision where they pulled out the port. Having said that, I was down for about 10 days. I could have gone to work at 8 days but that would have been pushing it. For me, about the same as the band surgery. Everyone is different. Some surgeons remove the band and put in a sleeve in two surgeries. I was only wiling to do one surgery. My surgeon prefers to do it in one surgery whenever possible. The only time he can't is when there is so much scar tissue it takes too long to remove the band. This has happened only once for him. The recovery was maybe a little longer with the sleeve than the band but I'm 10 years older (now 64). For me the big difference is the lap-band is a restriction. The sleeve is a small pouch which limits the amount you can eat. They also remove part of the stomach that creates the hormone grulin (SP?). I am not hungry at all, my cravings are gone. I love healthy food. (I'm told that can change in the years to come but for now the sleeve is working well for me. There is a lot of information on this board about lap-band to sleeve revisions.

    bmi at revision surgery

I had my band removed at 25 BMI due to complications... a slipped band (twice), acid reflux, Gerd and pain. However, I did not qualify for a revision since my BMI was so low and my sleep apnea went away. Since the removal I have gained all my weight back and more due to medical issues and medication I'm on. I am now at a 36 BMI and reapplied for a revision but my old insurance denied it 3 times stating it was not medically necessary although I regained, BMI is over 36 and sleep apnea returned. I went through the process over and over, classes, paperwork, dr appts you name it and although my band was removed due to medical necessity I struggled to finally get the revision approved. Point is you may have a difficult time getting a revision approved if you are at a low BMI.
  10. I am a lap band revision to sleeve. (banded 2006-sleeve revision Jan 2015) I had a lot of problems with lap band. Had a slip early on and had to have it replaced. Then continual pain in my abdomen always. I had all the Fluid removed for last 4 years and still had constant pain. Nothing showed up on tests. Doc kept blaming me but it hurt when I hadn't eating a thing. I finally had the bugger out and did a revision. (Initially didn't plan for sleeve revision, just wanted it out but Doc suggested I consider it.) FOR ME....the best thing I'd ever done. Wish I had done it sooner. FOR ME...the sleeve is so much easier post-op. I think my body does not tolerate foreign objects well. After sleeve surgery my stomach stopped hurting immediately and feeling like it was constantly in a knot. BTW-initially right after surgery, lap band complication are low compared to other WLS. But long-term lap band has much higher complications than other WLS due to foreign object in the body that can erode, slip, fail, etc. Best of luck to you. I understand completely how you feel. ONCE AGAIN... this is my experience with a lap-band. Many have wonderful results with no complications.

    Had my surgery today!

I have actually lost more quickly this time around. I had my band placed in 2008 and fought it for years only ever losing about 60 lbs. I had my revision on May 7 and have lost just shy of 50 lbs (including my pre-op weight loss) I am now at my lowest weight since I was 19, I am currently 36. As far as restriction, with me it isn't the same. I don't feel restriction like with the band. I just get full (really quickly). I had to stop myself from looking for the same feeling because it is totally different.
  12. Hi everyone. .Just joined. I was banded in August 2010. I'm on my preop diet scheduled for revision from band to bypass on the 22nd. It's taken years and 8 canceled surgery dates and a change of surgeons and insurance hurdles, infections, and a total of four years from wheni decidedto revise to get to this point and I'm terrified that the scar tissue will prevent the revision. .I don't think my nerves could handle another postponement. Right now I'm really struggling with the preop liquid diet. I'm kept up at night by hunger pangs and I'm too weak to do anything. I'm also very nervous about all the things to keep track of. The Protein, the Vitamins, the liquid, I'm si s scared I'll mess it up and harm my recovery. I have adhd so preplanning and tracking are a huge challenge. I'm open to any ideas to help simplify the process and calm my nerves. My main goal with this surgery is to aleviate my pcos and start ovulating again. I'm 30 years old.

Calling All Sleevers with a SIPS

I just read about SIPS in the past week or so. I wish I could have it, but it seems like it might be some time before it is wildly available and I can't wait any longer. In a few years if I am not where I need to be, maybe a revision to SIPS will be possible.
  14. I'm considering a sleeve to mini bypass revision (pouch has stretched and may do this over resleeve) Trying to decide. What "negative" side affects are you experiencing? I dont have any gasto issues, reflux etc...

    July Sleevers! Let's chat!

Hi everyone! I had my band to sleeve revision on July 9th - feel great! Just a little sore and walking helps. I did gain 7 lbs from surgery but lost that plus 2 more. I am trying to figure out what to eat on the puréed foods portion for 2 weeks. Any ideas?
  16. Sorry.. i was posting on my ipad late last night which was harder than on my computer. I should have been more clear. I do dilligently log my food and stay around 1200 calories a day. I eat Protein first and then veggies etc.. I do on rare occassions go out with friends (maybe 1x week) and have a little more carbs than normal, but my normal meal is: Breakfast shake or eggs Lunch: Salad with chicken or other meat Dinner: Grilled meat (steak, salmon etc..) veggies, salad etc.. I do drink socailly maybe 3x month. I belong to a health club and go at least 3x a week for an hour, either with a class or cardio. I SHOULD up my weight training... My concern is that I could eat a lot. i could easily eat a large steak and still want more.. be hungry. that doesnt seem normal right? I'd never have surgery to fix 20 lbs... but I also dont want to start down a slippery slope if i SHOULD fix it now to avoid bigger issues in the future... Has anyone done a resleeve or other revision?
  17. that's who I had did just did my revision from the sleeve to the bypass.. and took out some scar tissue..
  18. Sorry Jane13. My profile had a few errors - never paid too much attention to it. I was not a lap band revision. My first and only surgery was the sleeve. I think it took me about six months to lose 120 lbs.
  19. @@Brian66 - Thanks for updating us on your progress. You revised from band to sleeve in 7/2010? How long did it take to lose the 100plus pounds? Your stats have lap-band - just curious.

Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?

I lost at a normal rate even though I was band to sleeve revision. I think there are many factors but #1 my band had been no fill for many years and I had regained (plus more ) years before my revision and 2) I asked what to beware of as a revisionista and it was tolerating that feel if a full esophagus. Some bandsters get used to that feeling. ..I was very conscious of portions sizes because that has always been my downfall.
  21. Statistically, this is the time when regain happens. The ability to eat a lot more at this point is also common. The hard reality is that it's really up to us, at this point. I am also coming to the same realization. I am going to need to increase my diligence and really watch it, or I'm going to gain. I also have not gotten all the way goal (within 5-10 pounds and had plastics) so I don't have any wiggle room. My surgeon does not do revisions for regain. His coordinator openly said that at the last support meeting, stating that if you didn't do what you needed to do to keep weight off, a second surgery probably isn't the answer. He had also told me previously that they are finding areas of ballooning in sleeves which is probably the reason capacity increases, though there is no evidence to support that it causes gain, and the risk is higher, so not worth an unknown benefit. I always knew regain was possible. What I didn't know is how EASY it would be. I thought you'd have to really be going out of your way to eat wrong, way too much, etc. My harsh truth is that it only takes a little indiscretion, for a very short time, or those pounds pack on. Every veteran sleever I know who has regained says it's harder to get it off the second time, also a disappointing thought. However, I do know what it takes to lose the weight and maintain it, so that's what I've got to do. I saw some statistics @AlexBrecher posted, and I think it said revisions accounted for about 11% of all WLS. It didn't say what the revisions were. So while my surgeon doesn't support that, obviously, it is being done. I suspect some of those numbers are band to sleeve, or sleeve to RNY for complications. To answer your question - I'd be trying to go back to basics before I would undertake another major risky surgery to combat a regain of 20 pounds. You know what to do, you've done it before. Good luck to you.
  22. i was sleeved in 2012 and lost 110 lbs within 10 lbs of goal weight. Did plastics and was loving life. About 6-8 mo back though I noticed less and less reStriction ( I could easily eat a whole sub sandwich Before it was maybe equivalent if ¼. I rarely if ever eat breads Etc. sometimes if Out I'll have a little piece of baguette but anyway). I'm hungry and I could eat way way more. I've now gained back enough to where my bmi is getting up there again ( 20 ish lbs) and am considering revision. Resleeve? Other option? Has anyone done this? I'm active several times per week and with the exception of an occasional night out with friends am a salad and Protein girl. My work schedule will allow time off for a redo in August if needed. But I'm not sure what to do. Master all this hard work and all the plastics too I don't want to go backwards. I feel a little failure even though i do feel my diet is pretty solid
