6 weeks and wanting food
gbveteran4d replied to shelleylester's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My egg salad is just a hard boiled egg or two (two takes me a while to finish), mustard, mayonnaise, and a tiny bit of pepper. All mashed up. But I'll eat anyone's egg salad tbh, as long as there's nothing crunchy in it and it's mashed up well. I know some people are lactose intolerant after, but I'm not fortunately. So I'll just eat any low sugar or sugar free ice cream. Also frozen yogurt from TCBY. -
6 weeks and wanting food
gbveteran4d replied to shelleylester's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 6 weeks out. I eat tuna salad, egg salad, scrambled eggs, grits, mashed potatoes, apple sauce, yogurt, ice cream, chicken salad, oatmeal, and rice/pasta (well chewed in small quantities). The only thing that messes me up is 1) not thoroughly chewing meats etc, 2) eating too fast, or 3) any form of beef and/or Jerky, no matter how much I chew it. Yes, I'm cheating somewhat, but the things I "cheat" on I have one bite. Haven't had pizza yet, but I have had some bread here and there. One thing that is awesome if you're a big fat cheater like me. Go to Taco Bell. Buy a shredded chicken burrito (it's like a dollar), open it up and eat the insides with a fork. It's like mushy rice, cheese sauce, sour cream, and shredded chicken. Then throw away the tortilla. Not super healthy, but in a pinch it's the perfect pouch sized meal on the go. Obviously go by what your doctor says and not some stranger on the internet, but these are the things I've eaten on those moments when I stray from the meal plan or am on the road. -
Be Honest! Did You Cheat on Your Liquid Diet?
Sylvia13 replied to Sunshine3073's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was dreading the pre-op diet (which for me was just one week long) more than anything. I was shocked at how easy it was for me. I think that getting all that Protein was really helpful. I was also allowed nonfat, low sugar yogurt. The other thing was that I was very busy that week, so I really didn't have too much time to dwell on it. After surgery was a different story. I couldn't stay on just liquids -- I absolutely craved solid food. I started soft foods early and started solid food a little early, too. I did have a couple of problems with solids, but I have no one to blame but myself. All is good now. -
I managed to avoid purees altogether in my "pureed" stage, because I found the texture disgusting as well. I just stuck to my Protein shakes, strained Soups, yogurt, and soft cheeses until I was allowed to start my "soft foods" stage. It's great that you are getting in your protein and Water. That is what you should REALLY be focusing on. Also, here's a good website that has some ideas for the "pureed" stage that are almost like real food. I *loved* the baked ricotta recipe: http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/08/pureed-foods.html

Looking for preop friends :)

@@mlmanney thank you! I know I can get the last little bit off within the month, I think I was just irritated with her because of how underwhelmed she was by the loss thus far. I went into this program saying that I wanted to be 1/2 way to my goal (which was to lose 50lbs) by the time I went back in for my follow up, and I hit that goal, I technically exceeded that goal not by much; but still. I was so excited because I have struggled with my thyroid medications for YEARS and I have never been able to lose weight. I'd eat healthy (for the most part, portions and carbs were definitely my issue) work out every day, sometimes twice a day and still never see the scale move, yet everytime I had bloodwork done they would have to increase my thyroid meds. I was just amazed that these last 3 weeks actually worked. Yes, I cheated a little in that I didn't follow the doctors instructions exactly but my schedule doesn't always allow for me heat up a lean cuisine at the drop of a hat. Sometimes I am in the car, or on the run and I would try to make the best decision or most healthful decision for me at that point in time. Were there a couple of times I had to go through a drive through and grab something in the last 3 weeks, absolutely! BUT, I would pick a grilled chicken salad with no dressing and only eat 1/2 of it, or I would choose a wrap loaded with grilled chicken and vegetables but not eat the tortilla. I found substitutions for things. I went into this saying that I refuse to deprive myself of anything, if I want it I will ultimately find a way to have it (even if I have to create a healthier version of it myself) or else I am going to fail at this whole thing ultimately. That is where my substitutions come in, if I want coffee; it is unsweetened with a vanilla Protein shake in it as creamer or the Yasso greek yogurt ice cream bars, or the Arctic Zero ice cream, SF pudding made with Protein powder and almond milk (because regular SF pudding has aspartame which I can't have). I have found ways to be able to still enjoy things without it effecting my losses. If I choose to have a greek yogurt bar, well then it has to be a low carb, low sugar lunch etc.. It's give and take really.. Like you said, I know the doctors have seen it all, but I got the impression yesterday that she just didn't get how much we all really turn our lives upside down to make this work. Sure, eventually we get used to it and it becomes second nature but it is soo not second nature for me at this point. I never realized how hard it would be to figure out how to fit in a gallon and a 1/2 of Water everyday, or how I'd have to stop at rest stops every single time we are out because I drank a gallon and a 1/2 of water today.. lol My program wasn't very long. Fortunately, my husband is the insurance holder for us and his company provides amazing insurance. Our insurance company doesn't have any prerequisites other than a single meeting with a nutritionist and a psych evaluation. My surgeon said that they are actually one of the best insurance companies in our area to deal with. So I had my informational session on July 14th, my initial consultation on the 17th at which point he told me he would like me to lose 30-50 lbs to be able to get the surgery I want (I think it's because I have scar tissue or something from previous abdominal surgeries). He then had me sit with the coordinator that day who booked every one of my appointments right then included surgery and my 3 week post op checkup. I go on the 25th for all of my preop bloodwork, I have the clearance for surgery appointment with my primary on the 3rd and then my consent signing with the surgeon on 9/17 and I start my liquid diet on the 18th with surgery on the 21st. I get where you are coming from though, it would be nice to have a date because it requires so much preparation and planning. -

Still have a lot of gas pain when I drink liquids. Hopefully that will go away soon. I am on full liquids so I did just successfully eat a Greek yogurt with almost no discomfort. Taking that as a major win. -
Strange Info from NUT re: Carbs
MarceMonster replied to MarceMonster's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Wow that's super low carb! I don't know how you manage that. What do you eat? I've added in things like yogurt (plain fage), cheese (other dairy), fruit, veggies and of course protein supplements, all of which have carbs in them. Now with all of that I am still relatively low, I usually eat about 40g carbs per day. I couldn't imagine how you manage 5-10 per day!!!! -
ISOPURE....wtf am I supposed to do with this?
efierke replied to rora's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Isopure unflavored I would mix with sugar free Jello and greek yogurt to make a ultra-high-Protein creamy dessert (think high protein key lime pie) it's also good in coffee (iced or not-quite-hot - it will curdle in hot liquids) -
Hi @@klo319, I have my surgery tomorrow too! Plus I am flying down to Tijuana tomorrow too, and surgery is same day. I am keeping my fingers crossed that there are no airplane delays, cuz timing is really tight. How have you found your pre-op diet? I was told to have only liquids for 3 days prior to surgery. I did full liquids the first day, then have been doing Clear Liquids today and will do same tomorrow. I find that I'm not all that hungry, so I think a social situation wouldn't be any problem. Stick to what you are allowed - by then you should be allowed full liquids, or maybe even soft mushy food. Take with you what you will need, like a couple of tea bags, a bottle of apple juice, whatever you like. Maybe some yogurt cups, or make yourself a Protein shake to take with you. Hopefully you won't be tempted to eat, since that would likely put you in pain, and you might be sick. You don't want that at a family gathering! Well, good luck! Where are you having yours done?

Fat free refried beams with cheese. Yogurt. Ricotta cheese with a little honey or with tomato sauce

I am on soft foods and I could have salmon. My wife made me some yesterday and it was delicious. But I realized very quickly that no matter how much I chewed it filled me up quite a bit faster than things like Soup or yogurt. I have been eating 4-5 ozs of food per meal, but with the salmon I could only have about 3 ozs. I think the density made me fill up quicker so if you can have it, my advice would be very careful and take your time with it.

So...I had like 1100 calories today and am 3 1/2 week out. I'm like scared!!! Will be calling my NUT tomorrow. Should I be scared? Am I messing up? Meal today: Breakfast: 1 egg, 1 slice cheese, 1 ham Snack: kiwi Lunch: 1 chicken sausage link from trader Joe with 1/2 c cooked squash. Snack: 2 Melba toast with 1oz bean, 2 oz guac, 2 thin slice turkey Dinner: 2 meatballs with tomato sauce and 1 mozz cheese 2% Snack: Greek yogurt As I write this I feel like HOLY ****!!!! Greek yogurt helps me get my protein without over eating. The Fage brand, plain, has 20g of protein! I add Splenda, vanilla, and cinnamon; Splenda, vanilla, and cocoa; or Splenda, vanilla, and PB2 so it tastes delicious and I don't mind eating it. That's nearly 1/3 of a day's protein intake in 7oz of yogurt. -
I am banded. I woke up this morning with pain down my spine. That's where I hurt when my gerd acts up. I took 4 Zantac, hour later I ate 4 saltines. Nothing worked. 3 hours ago I drank some chocolate milk, which soothes it instantly. But, then hurt within 30 minutes. I ate a container of Greek yogurt, that finally got rid of it about 2 hours ago. I just now ate a lil cabbage and sausage, no spices. It is back. I haven't had a big issue with it in over a year, with the exception of slight acid reflux once in a while at night. What does anyone suggest? I am hurting. (i have no fluid in my band because of some erosion)

Day four I'm gagging on protein shakes. Too sweet.
Istishia replied to grammie1212's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Cut the sweetness with some plain greek yogurt. I have opted to layering my Proteins when making my Protein shakes. Typically use powders that are around 20-30 grams. If they are on the 20 side, add some greek yogurt and some skim milk to make my shake bumping that protein as close to 40 grams I can get. Also try some of the sugar free flavorings. Toroni makes some great syrups, but also in your baking aisle at your local market. -

What do you do when you are a picky eater, and now you dislike most of the things you need to assist in your weight loss?
tiffanyt replied to BostonStrong617's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am 5 weeks post op and am finding myself in a similar boat. I just don't really like anything anymore. I almost gagged with tuna, and enjoyed it before. I mix unflavored protein powder with my yogurt, retried beans, pudding, etc to get my protein in. -
My surgery date is August 26. I'm having gastric bypass. I lost 26 lbs by changing my diet in the last 3 months. Today I started the liquid diet. My stomach was very upset this morning. I had a Premier Protein shake for Breakfast and felt horrible. Maybe it's mental because I consumed those for breakfast sometimes before today. For lunch today I had a chicken Soup unjury shake with 1% milk, which tasted like chicken broth. I'm also drinking Water, as much as I want. I figure that may make me feel fuller during the day. I'm on a full liquid diet for two weeks, which includes pudding and yogurt, but most items are sweet, not savory so I'm feeling a bit urpy and hungry. I think a lot of the hunger can be attributed to the reason why I'm overweight, which is that I just like to eat......anything. I'm totally addicted to food. I'm a Midwestern gal and love my food! The doctor told me that my taste buds may change after surgery and I will probably not crave the things I crave now. I sure hope he's right, but just in case, I have scheduled an appointment with a psychologist to help me with my addiction and relationship with food. I sure hope I can stick to this liquid diet!

To eat or not to eat! LOL!
JamieLogical replied to Nikki Monroe's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I add granola or kashi Cereal to my greek yogurt on the days I work out, since it's my last snack before my workouts and the extra carbs help fuel me. But I just buy those separate, measure them out into little containers, and add them when I eat my yogurt. I agree that the added texture is really nice, plus it's a little more filling, since there are some solids in there. -

Learned some new info about Greek yogurt. I suppose the one I eat every morning falls under the non-true Greek yogurt. But I like it and the granola adds texture which I love. -
