    New Guy in the Neighborhood

Welcome bro! Fellow guy here and you will find a lot of great information on here. We have similar ages/weights etc....so I'm interested in seeing how your surgery and everything plays out. March 14 will be here before you know it! Congrats.
  2. Hello All, I am 59 yrs. old and have fought weight problems for all of my adult life. I have done all of the fad diets and am a lifetime member of Weight Watchers. I have always lost weight--60-70 lbs. each time, but always end up gaining it back. I'm tired of this, plus I have quite a few health issues (high blood pressure, osteoarthritis in my knees). I'm waiting now for knee replacement surgery, but it cannot be done until I lose weight. I am a little over 100 lbs. overweight. I have now been on this journey for the past year and still don't have my LAP-BAND. I've been pretty patient, but now I can't wait. I don't have a surgery date as yet because my insurance requires that I spend a year with a life coach which has been a big help. She enourages me, listens to me during my highs and lows, and is there for me every step of the way. She is a registered nurse and we talk every other week. I have also been required to be a part of two telephone conference groups discussing ways to make this work, why we want to do this, and many good tips for pre- and post-surgery. My year will be up on August 16th, and I have an appointment with my surgeon on the 17th. Hoping that the wait won't be too long for the insurance to go ahead and approve it at that time because I'm so ready for this surgery and to begin my journey! I know it won't be easy, but it will be a very helpful tool and a reminder if I ever think about overeating again. I welcome any good tips from those of you who already have had the surgery and wish everyone the very best.
  3. Very strange, look at this post I just found from a few days ago on a thread about Dr Snyder that hadn't had a response in over two years. Apparently people don't understand how 'threads' work and that they can move to a new place... Still No Patient Recommendations on Dr. Snyder Exactly, no definitive responses from Dr. S clients. My point exactly. __________________ Starting Weight: 211:thumbs_down: Current Weight: 207:thumbs_down: Goal Weight: 125:thumbs_up: So I just wanted to share that, and get the word out that Dr Snyder has LOTS of patients on this site. and the quote Still No Recommendations... I can't even find that quote on that thread, lol. Am I reading this wrong, or is this person just a little mistaken? Anyway, how is everyone? Hi nora!
  4. Leslie - Let me start off by saying that I can only wish I would have done as well as you have. I am 19 mos out from banding and have only lost the 10 pounds I lost on the PRE-op diet! Although I am not bipolar, I have family that is, and I do take 40mg of Paxil for depression. I'm not going to say I know how you feel, because I have watched people suffer thru the ups and downs of being bipolar, but have not had to experience it myself. I know it's easier said than done, but try to pick yourself up - you have made great leaps and bounds since being banded. Many people, including myself, could only dream of the successess you have already had. I know how depressing and frustrating this can be - I'm there. Some people say "take it a day at a time" - I say "take it an hour at a time" - I can do a lot of damage in a days time! It is overwhelming for me to look at the big picture - I still have a good 100 pounds to lose, and haven't found a good way to do it. It is very upsetting - I feel like I have not only let myself down, but my family as well (they are pretty supportive of me, with the exception of my dad and sister). I've had 3 back surgeries and am 33 years old - I am certain that I will face more, especially if I don't get some of this weight off. You most certainly do deserve the band - you've shown that by the weight loss you've had so far. However, I sometimes feel I don't deserve the band either, as I have never allowed it to work the way its intended to work - as a tool - I wanted it to be the miracle answer to weight loss, and it's not. Hang in there! This is not an easy journey, and medications affect everyone differently - your meds may have A LOT to do with your feelings. (The closest my sister-in-law has ever been to suicide was when she was on Wellbutrin - but for some it's a God sent) Hopefully, your doctor will find the right medications for you - ones that will not only make you feel better about yourself, but ones that don't have terrible side effects. Good luck to you - and feel free to vent anytime you need to. We're here for each other. You can even Private Message me, if you want. Stephanie

    Unsure

There are a small percentage of people that do have complications and it's good to acknowledge those because you really do have no idea exactly how it will go for you. But there are also huge numbers of people that don't have complications and do really well. Most people that I've heard of that have complications, usually get past them and end up being a success. For me, it was with the risk. I was miserable, in pain constantly and had some scary medical issues. Now I'm 162 lbs lighter and just hit a healthy weight according to the bmi charts and I'm only 9 lbs from goal. It hasn't been easy and I had a few minor issues in the beginning, but it's been 100% with it and I'd do it all over again if I had to. Your body will be better able to handle whatever health issues that come your way at a healthy weight plus you'll be able to enjoy the benefits of no longer being overweight. It really feels great!

    Exercise?

For me, exercise is more about being healthy, feeling good, and keeping my metabolism revved than anything. Plus, I enjoy it. I was very immobile pre-op. I got an exercise peddler and worked my way up to peddling it with my hands for an hour a day. Post-op, I walked some until I was cleared to get in the pool. I have been doing most of my exercise in the pool ever since: Water aerobics, lap swimming, water weights/calisthenics, etc. It helps to find something you enjoy doing. That's a great idea. Didn't realize you can do all of that in the water. Thank you for posting/responding. Sent from my Nexus 6 using the BariatricPal App

    Scared

I read them, too. Basically what it came down to for me was that I could either stay at my current weight knowing for sure that I'd have health problems sooner or later, or have the surgery and deal with those risks. And I was TERRIFIED by the time I got there, but also really ready to go. I mean, like, I was half convinced I'd die on the operating table, so I bought all my daughter's school supplies and fall clothes way early, just in case. I was nuts. And honestly, I have had one or two days where I felt kind of sore, or kind of "bleh," but otherwise, I've been doing fine. I've lost eight pounds since my surgery (I'm ten days out), twenty five pounds since I started pre-op dieting, and I already feel more energetic and optimistic. I'm really glad I did it, even if I did totally freak myself out at first. I guess what I'm saying is, feeling really nervous and worried is totally normal, especially when your date starts getting closer. Just try to remember that some of the anxiety is rational, and some of it isn't.

  10. Hi fellow Bandsters! Thought i would join the site to share my experience. Im from Edmonton Alberta Canada, and have always been the fat kid. When I was 14 I weighed 245lbs and worked my way up to 265lbs by the time I was 17. I joined Weight Watchers and hit 210lbs by the time High school was over. Over the next ten years it was a roller coaster! When I went to college at 25 I got a little silly with the drinkin and by the time i graduated i was back up to 270lbs (have to admit it was alot of fun!).By the time I was 30 I hit the 300lbs mark. I keep tryin diets like Jenny Craig and am succefull, but i seem to drop 20 then a few months later gain 30.I now have a job in Sales, which i get paid to take customers out for food and drink. Im now 34 years old and have hit 349lbs! Im not even the same person anymore and I really miss the old me! I loved to socalize and travel the world (Australia, Cambodia, US, ect...). I never had a problem meeting women and could fit in with any group in a short amount of time. Now I just want to curl up in a dark cave and see no one!I could really care less if I wake up in the morning anymore. I had to turn the mirror around in my room so I dont have to disgust myself anymore. I cant live like this any longer! I have researched many options but found that the Lapband will work best for me. Im one of those people that never eat breakfast but will eat a truck when dinner comes around. I need this tool to help me with portion size more than anything. Unfortunately our Alberta Health Care system is a joke. Due to the fact that i am healthy as can be (aside the weight)it will take 2-3 years before i can have the surgery here in Edmonton. I have decided to go to Mexico to see Dr.Horacio Guajardo (worked for many years with Dr.Rumbaut) in Monterrey Mexico on July 14th 2009. He has personally called me to asure everything. Lisa and Brigitte (the Canadain and US patient relations) have been very no extremely helpfull. I have spent over 4hrs on the phone talking with Lisa for the past several weeks goin over every little detail. Sorry for the novel here, but i cant wait to start my journey here is 2 days! Look forward to all of your information. Cheers Kevw
  11. Hey.....it's possible that he wanted the bread and ice cream for himself ???? The pre-op and short term post-op liquid times filled my family with trepidation and concerns. They voiced concerns over this being how I'd be living......and not grilling and cooking for them anymore. Their concerns were eased up, as I advanced through these stages and onto the real way of eating that I've settled into. I cook and grill often and the main entree's are what I enjoy, while making additional side dishes and Desserts for them. I stayed outa the kitchen during my liquid diet phases, though. And outa the grocery stores. All totaled this was a 5 week time period.....just Protein powder or protein pre-made shakes. You'd not believe the stuff they stocked the shelves with during that period.....all sorts of sweets, chips and junk food that could have been insanely tempting.....at a time when I really wasn't needing temptation. It all worked out. Reaching past the family's junk food to grab my canisters of powder soon filled me with pride. I'd become galvanized and singular in purpose. That 6 weeks was a major turning point for me. Weight started falling off at a great rate.....5 pounds/week.....double the rate I'd already been losing while on my bariatric program's diet leading up to that point. I'm grateful for that time frame. Fighting the temptation battle within the safe confines of my own home.....facing that and coming out on top.....at home.......forged my willpower and made facing the same temptations out in public, at work, at play around strangers, in restaurants, etc.....made me stronger and better for it. As cool as it would be if our families fell into step with us in those early days......it is simply not realistic. They have fears and act out. My wife and son are normal sized. They fit the height/weight charts. Heck, my son is undersized and needs to eat significantly more, in his doctor's opinion. I've read time and time again of our the tales of friends on here at Bariatric Pal......case where their families went the opposite direction than they did.....really amping up the temptation. Guess what? Most of those BP friends went on to be the most successful at their wls results. Some of them even continued to shop and prepare meals for their family during their own liquid phases. I couldn't do that particular act, but have huge respect for them. Just consider it a mini-test that you are able to address within the safety of your own home. Nobody there to judge you for simply standing there with the fridge open.....looking that junk food in the eye.....and cussing out loud at it.....flipping it the bird.....and reaching past it to get to your Protein Shakes.........
  12. Hi all, I am in the insurance authorization stage. I'm 5'5" and I weigh 184 pounds. My goal weight is 120 (I'm a small framed woman). I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. The dr. put me on meds for both, but the side effects are horrible and I don't want to take meds. My Dad had a stroke from high blood pressure at 55 and he passed away from heart attack at 61. My 68 year old Mom has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure. I feel like a walking time bomb. I've been overweight for the last 20 years (I'm 47) and I've tried every diet out there. I've lost weight and then regained it and I'm done with the rollercoaster. I want to get banded so that I re-learn how to have a healthy relationship eating the right amount of food for my body. My fear is that my insurance won't cover me since my BMI is 31 even though I have high BP and cholesterol and an awful family history. I hope and pray that the insurance will cover this. Thanks for letting me vent. Sandy
  13. LOL! I swear I though t it was just me! I ordered a mini fan for my office for the crazy hot flashes. I mean sweat dripping off of my chin in the middle of meetings hot flashes. I have probably motivated a lot of people to lose weight this week after watching me sweat like a mad woman. Liquid diet and sweat go hand iin hand I suppose. I am on Clear liquids now and am not sure if I need to have a bowel movement before surgery or does that matter? Maybe tmi, but should I take a laxative or something? Thanks guys. My surgery is the day after tomorrow morning, the 24th.
  14. I have been following RNYTalk.com for a while now and decided I should share my experience. I had RNY in January 2005 at age 24. I was 249 lbs at the time of surgery. I did fantastic with no complications other than needing my gall bladder removed in December of that year (which is very common). I lost my weight steadily and at six months I had got down to 152 lbs. I never had a specific goal in mind but this was a great weight for me. After that I stabled out at 157 lbs for four years. In January 2009 my life dramatically changed when my very painful divorce was final. More or less everything that had been my life was gone. I was going to be 30 in just a couple months and I was back living at home with my parents in a dreary basement apartment with no job, no insurance and no hope. As many of us know all to well when depression strikes food becomes our medicine, our friend and are only consistent source of love. Needless to say I started to gain my weight back. I was in complete denial that it was my eating habits but instead something was "wrong" with the surgery. I even went to my surgeon who performed an exploratory abdominal procedure and found nothing of significance. Sinking deeper into my depression my weight gain continued and for a long time I just denied it all together despite having to buy bigger and bigger clothes. My self-esteem was down to an all time low and was now I was trying to attempt to date for the first time in 8 years. Boy, what fun was that! When I finally found a good man (who I married last summer) I was up to 200 lbs. I didn't care anymore and my husband loved me for who I was and not for how I looked. Now exactly 3 years since our relationship started I am 225 lbs and have been at this weight despite efforts to lose the weight. I have decided to see a new surgeon that is a revision specialist and have my RNY revised. I am now in the beginning stages of getting the process rolling. It is treated just like I never had the surgery before. Supervised weight loss, seminars, NUT meetings, blood work etc. I am having an EGD in two weeks and next month I will be done with the supervised weight loss requirement. My own therapist will provide the pysch eval and we will be doing that at the end of the month. I don't have an actual surgery date yet. My main point in sharing this is that this surgery is just a tool. I know we all hear this but it is so, so true and not a lifelong fix no matter what. If you stop eating right, stop taking Vitamins, stop following up with your surgeon you will gain back the weight. I am not writing all this to scare anyone or make anyone reconsider their decision. Having GB was the best thing I every did myself and I know I will be able to do it again. My mind set is 100% different and I know so much more than I did 8 years ago. This is my story and I look forward to be getting a second chance on my life and getting control of my weight once again.

    Any help appreciated

Get to your Dr and discuss the reasons why in 3 years you have only lost 20 lbs. Obviously you need a fill but there may be other reasons why you arent losing weight. I am 10 months post op and have seen the Dr every month since being banded and will continue until I reach my goal. I have had 4 fills to get to my sweet spot.... but the more I lose the more filled I need to be. I couldnt be as successful as I have been if I didnt see my Dr every month. Best of Luck to you.

    Magilla

I only told the people I knew I could count on to support me. I didn't want to hear any negative crap from people that had no clue what is involved with having the band. As I lose weight, if anyone ask how, I will probably tell them.
  17. I am still wearing my pre-surgery bras, but need to buy smaller (trying to use clothes as long as possible). Obviously I am on the smallest hook now, but there is definitely a little more room in the cup. I had a reduction almost two years ago, which was wonderful. I went from a too-small DDD to a D, having almost four pounds removed from each breast. Hopefully I will end up a C. When I had the reduction, I had no plans for weight loss surgery. The surgeon didn't want to make my breasts smaller than a D because of my size. The breast reduction of course included a lift, so they are up where they belong. When I look at the way my clothes fit, I have to say that the breast reduction adds as much to a better fit as the weight loss. And of course, exercise is much easier without the burden of overlarge breasts.

    Pre Op Jitters

I too was nervous. But I am so amazed at how much better I feel already. My blood pressure has gone down tremendously, I'm sure my BP meds will have to be lessened if not gone soon! With the weight 3 lbs I lost before I started the liquid diet, plus the weight lost on liquid diet, and the weight this first week and am down a total of 30 lbs from my all time high! To me that already seems like a miracle!!! The liquid diet isn't that bad. I did feel hungry at times, but would drink some Crystal light or have a mug of low sodium chicken or beef broth. That helped me alot! It kinda helped my stomach get used to not being stuffed all the time. I actually got to feel what it feels like to feel hunger. And I think with our new lifestyle that is an important thing we need to be able to feel. I wish you all the best. You'll be glad you did it. And one of the great things is our anatomy is not being altered. So down the road if you decide you don't want it, it can be removed! (That part kinda eased my mind a bit! Hairdoerbren

I have the same insurance and I had to do the 6 months diet. I lost 27 lbs before my surgery and was approved. I had my surgery Aug 30. Did they not approve you due to not losing enough weight or was it something else? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using the BariatricPal App
  20. I completely agree. Its sad that weight loss companies only look at the negative sides of weight loss surgery. The band is a great alternative to gastric bypass. Good luck.
  21. My insurance changed! I started my journey November 2018, with a consult with my (then) surgeon at Riverside Medical Clinic. With my (then) insurance, Anthem Blue Cross ***, I only needed 3 month (12 continuous classes) supervised nutrition/weight classes. As of now, I finished 10 out of my 12 classes. Last week I found out my insurance changed to Anthem BC PPO and they now require me to go to a Dignity Health Facility to be covered 100%. Well okay... I call my nearest Dignity Health bariatric surgery center to find out more. I was told at Western Bariatric (St. Bernadine -- San Bernardino, CA) that I needed 6 months of classes and basically restart my journey. I started to bawl my eyes out! I'm 25 (November birthday) and I'm getting real close to end of my insurance coverage under my parents. When I had started my journey, I was hoping to have my surgery by March or April. So, I'm worried about having my surgery before my cut off. Anyway, I sucked it up and started making calls. I attended their Seminar, where we filled out new patient packets and made copies of our insurances. The next step is to wait for a call to schedule my consult with their surgeon. I was told that the consult would count as 1 of the 6 months of weight classes. Does anyone believe they will accept my 3 months of classes Ive already taken? (and maybe only need 3 more months to meet the 6mo requirement?) Will they consider the original surgeon consult from November 2018 too (as part of the 6 months wight management?) I'm honestly hoping that Western Bariatric will consider my start (Nov.) to my current (Feb.) for a total of 4 out of the 6 required months. I didnt want to be set further back, but ill take whatever they'll take and Im hoping for the best! Can anyone can give me some insight? Similar situations? Anyone go to Western Bariatric? I'm really anxious.

Ha! Every summer for the last few years I've had to buy bigger shorts (well, bigger everything) because I was gaining weight. Last summer I refused to buy any new ones, and so went without because none I had fit me. I can't wait to fit back into those old shorts again!

    Bcbs tn

I have BC of Tn. Basically to me it was a game I had to play with them. Thier first requirement is that you have lost 10% of your weight under doctors care within the past 2 yrs. If you have a BMI over 40 you don't have to have any co-morbidities. If your BMI is under 40 then you have to have 3 co-morbidities...like High B/P, Diabetes, Sleep Apnea, etc. For me my BMI was over 40 with no co-morbidities. I had to go on the 10% diet. Lost the weight then my BMI was less then 40. The Dr's. office submitted it and I got denied because I don't have any co-morbidities. I gained some of that weight back within a couple of months...they resubmitted it and I got approved. Go figure!! I love my band!! Good luck. Let me know if you have any other questions.
