  1. Well, its been a tough time again recently (sorry I know I am usually either boasting or moaning on here!), and I've been pretty tough on myself over a lot of things, so I was in much need of a bit of cheering up. Today I have been overwelmed by compliments, and people seeking my advice on weight loss because of my "success" (I am very aware of the last 12lb, and my many flaws, but other people aren't seeing that). Firstly I was shopping, and an old friend saw me from a distance, but wasnt close enough to say hi, but she took the time to e-mail me, to say how well I looked, within 10 minutes another old friend e-mailed to say she'd seen my facebook picture, and needed my advice on weight loss because I was obviously doing well, and then when I got to work THREE seperate colleagues commented on my weight loss, and basically asked when I was going to stop, one even said that every monday morning she waits to see how much further I have wasted away!! I of course just mumbled and blushed a bit, but Gosh it felt good!!! Its funny because I don't recognise myself at all any more, I've just reviewed my day 0, 2 month, 3 month, 6 month and 9 month progress pics, and I don't recognise me in any of them, I look bigger than I ever felt in the first 3 pics, and thinner than I feel in the second 2 - this is a very strange journey, but I quite like it!

    Not So Fabulous Nsv

Lol! Same here. The cold weather here is gone (70s right now) but I just HAD to buy a new coat because I am traveling overseas next week. It is the same brand and model than last years, but 2 sizes down AND it won't fit next winter! Like you said this losing weight thing sucks and is costly! Congrats on your intolerable NSV. lol
  4. Has anybody had the gastric sleeve surgery done in the Chicago land area? If so, can someone give me some recommendations? I'm going to a seminar at the University of Illinois medical center next week, but might wanna look into other hospitals for this procedure.
  5. @@gina171 I suffered with gerd for almost two years prior to surgery. I was taking Omeprazol on a daily basis. Sometimes it helped and sometimes it did not. Even with this info, and after a thorough EGD, my surgeon still recommended the sleeve. I honestly wasn't sure what I would find on the "other side" but I know I wasn't expecting this. I am 8 weeks post op sleeve, and I can honestly say I have yet to experience any signs of gerd. Someone once stated it was because of being in the liquids stage. Yeah....I did so well with everything I was allowed to start normal foods the day after my 2 week post op appt. I know everyone is different, but I do know at this point, it seems to have worked some sort of gerd miracle. Lol. Good luck in your decision. It's definitely a lot to think about.

    Frustrated (long)

I feel I have to be really honest and hopefully some of you will have some words of wisdom for me. I can't remember when I last lost a pound. In fact, I've gained three. Although I had read before hand that the band is not magic, at first it seemed like it was. Fifty pounds melted off of me despite the fact that I basically wasn't following any of the band rules very often and was eating whatever I wanted. Well, the honeymoon's been over for months now and I've realized that those rules are there for a reason and that I can't continue to eat junk and continue to eat around the band if I want to lose more weight. But I've had a really rough time getting control of my eating and the really discouraging part is that I feel the same frustrations that I did pre-band. I really don't want to diet again because I feel that's part of what got me here in the first place, but I've about decided that dieting is what I have to do. Except I haven't been able to discipline myself to do it. For the past week or so, I've been focusing on following the Omega-3 diet rules. It isn't a weight loss diet, it's more of a diet that is intended to improve cardiovascular health, blood glucose levels, and mood. This has come about because after going down post-banding, both my blood glucose and my cholesterol were slightly high again. I've been eating healthier since I started doing this diet and I feel better, but I still haven't lost any weight. I've been in therapy for a year, so that is not the answer. I've been exercising fairly regularly all along and have recently stepped up the amount. I try to ride my bike every day between 5 and 7 miles. Or else I walk about a mile or so. Wimpy, I know, but I am very faithful about it. Restriction? It seems pretty good, I guess. I don't know, it's so hard to really know what the "sweet spot" is. I know that I am burping a lot and that sometimes I feel I need to burp, but can't. I know that occasionally I'll have a slime experience. But it still seems that I can eat a pretty good amount of food. For example, for lunch just now, I ate about 1/4 cup of firm tofu and about 2 cups of a fresh cabbage and onion dish. And I did not feel anything at all from the band. Does that seem like a lot? So there it is. I'm frustrated with myself and I feel like I'm in pre-bandlandia all over again. Nancy

    Frustrated (long)

Hey I have experienced the same thing as of recent and past. I have been banded since 08/03 and I have dropped 50 lbs. I have added lots of muscle yet I have had many intervals of struggle. I am in one now as I was @226 then bam 230-235 range for two weeks. I can identify the problems cause hey we put the cals in right? Like you I'm like I feel pre band. Here is a thought. We couldnt be like before or we would steady gain back weight. I have intervals. 5 will go and stay the n come back but then 6 goes and 5 returns! I won a lb. Its a yo yo sometimes. Frustrations yeah I work out like mad.. This body is fighting to retain its set pt of fat and weight. I inherited that I believe. I will prevail and you will too. Deep breath and reset yourself to the beginning rules that got you this far.

    serious second thoughts

Hi, I am one week post-op and I must commend you on the research you have done. I wasn't as concerned with blood clots as I should have been, but luckily my doctor and the nurses were. Maybe to ease your mind you can ask your doctor what the plan is to help prevent them? While I was in the hospital they gave me 4-5 blood thinners to prevent blood clots and they put these cuffs around my feet and ankles that pulsated and helped with the blood flow. It actually felt like it was massaging my feet, I liked it. Once I was able to get up and walk I didn't have to wear them. The doctors and nurses just keep pushing you to walk. It's the best thing to help with clots and recovery. Each doctor and hospital is different, but check with your doctor. I'm sure that he/she will put your mind at ease. Good luck with your upcoming surgery .

    Gas pain

I am 3 weeks post op and I have been advanced to pureed foods. So I grilled chicken on the Forman grill then pureed it in the bullet. But every time I eat hot foods I get very bad gas pains and then I pop a gas x strip and I just stop eating. Do u guys think I should use gas x before I began to eat or should I take them every morning. I'm confused. Please help.

    Stall? Eating schedule and habits?

Three months out from surgery, if you log food, you know that you are eating your weight loss calories and getting your protein goal in each day. (Guessing my calories and goals never worked for me) Stop with the sensation of full. Some people have great surgery restriction. It may take more time or breaking up your meals to frequent intervals to hit your calories/macros. Stalls happen. I had my first major stall my third month. It messed with my head. I had to evaluate how I was working my plan. I was slacking off on activity/exercise. Some advice I had from vet’s and a trainer. Don’t do the same type of exercise over and over. Mix things up to get the scale moving. Here is a link to embrace the stall. It help me figure some things out. https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/351046-embrace-the-stall/

Hope I can wrap my head around this!

B-52, I would hope you don't get flamed, your response is very honest, and not judgemental at all! I do know i need to make some changes, and it is so hard not to have that "magic" answer! Catfish, I have sat back and tried to reflect. Over the last few days, I hav come to realize one of things I stopped doing after surgery that I have in the last few montsh picked back up, is drinking my calories. And it is not through Protein shakes, but juices, something that I gave up after surgery, and only occasionally enjoyed. Now it is a common occurence! Also, I think I sometimes don't call it quits when I feel stuck, rather I just keep throwing up, and if I get it out and feel ok, I start eating again! I think this may be an issue best discussed with my therapist. She too had LB surgery, about three years before mine, and she has been great at supporting me, good and bad, throughout this journey.
  12. Although I didn't have as much to lose, I did not lose as much as I thought I should at one year. I called my doctor and asked what I could do. She suggested that I go back to day 1 eating and start there. Use two days for each week (week 1 liquids- decaf tea coffee, sugar free Popsicle, sugar free Jello, clear sugar free juice, broth) (week 2 full liquids - Protein powder with Water, thinned cream Soup, thin oatmeal, sugar free pudding, thin applesauce) etc. You know the drill. It takes a lot of will power, but it works. Don't forget to exercise and drink water and make your meals last at least 20 minutes. No water before, during, or after any meal - even with liquid meals.
  13. What amount of carbs do you loose the most weight on ? I have heard 20 gms is the ideal amount for Ketosis but I have found it nearly impossible to keep my carbs that low. I am at 60 gms daily. I continue to lose weight but I am very worried that it will stall due to that high carb amount. But 20 gms is not only not achievable but not sustainable either. Please share your carb counts & experience. Sent from my SM-G920P using BariatricPal mobile app
  14. Im four weeks post op yesterday and had my first fill yesterday aswell. I have been having this upper pain in the center of my chest and at time the pressure is like a sever gas pain/bubble...It comes and go but I dont like it at all!!! Is this going to be an on going thing and i just better get used to it? Is there something i can take to help with it like maalox gas ex? Any all all helpfull suggestions are greatly appreciated. Hellllp;)
  15. My Dr is good I think - saw him ONCE for the consultation. His Bariatric Coordinator is NOT however. She literally rolls her eyes when talking so fast I have to ask her to repeat things 3 times! I was told "call anytime" but can never reach her and if I can, she gets off the phone before I'm done asking questions - hangs up on me literally! So I am looking elsewhere. I know this will delay my surgery date but oh well. I have all the referrals/recommendations,; don't know if Dr has approved it and if it was sent in to Insurance for their approval or not. Don't know ANYTHING> One person at office changed my 2nd Dr appt for the 3rd time, to 2 weeks away and said "have you done your weigh-ins yet?" WHATweigh-ins? No one said anything about THAT! She said, you'd better talk to Gina, the B. Coordinator, and I said yeah right, like she ever calls me back... So it's time to get another surgeon /practice I think. Any comments? Is this typical? Should I follow my "gut" - pun intended - and move on? Hate to postpone surgery but really this is not good! I am 5' tall with BMI of 40 at 206 lb and 3 co-morbidities. Need to get this resolved!
  16. I have been taking the Biotin from the beginning of my journey. My hair loss at 4 months out was really freaking me out. My hairdresser advised me to keep taking the Biotin because she could see the regrowth where I could not. I believe it has helped. My doctor has told me that my hair should start coming back by the time I am a year out from my surgery. It will be a year in September. I can already tell that it is thickening back up. Thank the Lord! I also use organic coconut oil twice a week to help it grow faster too.

    Is this a plateau?

I do the same thing. I loose a pound or two & then nothing for a day or two. I guess this is just the way my body deals with this change in eating habits. 30 pounds isn't bad. If this is stressing you out then don't weigh everyday. We are all different & handle the scales differently. I weigh every day but I don't freak out if the scale goes up a pound. Some people only weigh once a week. You will notice a big loss of inches in your body. I've gotten rid of some many clothes that my closet is looking a little bare. LOL
  19. "The Institute of Medicine recommends that adults get a minimum of 0.8 grams of Protein for every kilogram of body weight per day to keep from slowly breaking down their own tissues [39]. That's about 8 grams of protein for every 20 pounds of body weight."http://www.dsfacts.com/protein.html Very interesting, this put me at a need for 120 grams I was checking out a fellow members post about weight stall, http://www.dsfacts.com/weight-loss-stall-or-plateau.html, incredibly informative and found this protien information. They also talk about carbs, http://www.dsfacts.com/carbohydrates.html, if your curious

    THREE MONTHS OUT!

Hi Shaunie, you are doing great!! I remember when I was on my 2 week Preop Protein drinks, When I went in for my last weigh in before my surgery I didn't think I had done so well. But I had lost 17#'s. When I thought about it I was ok. That was a little more than a # a day!! I am 3 years out and the way you feel about being afraid to let your guard down is exactly how I felt. I kept thinking about every diet I had been on some even many times more than up to 4 times. Weight watchers 3 times and Nutrisystem 3 times!! TOPS at least 4 times. All I could think of was how many times I had lost and then regained my weight. At one point I lost 135#'s. But it was because I was so sick from my FIBROMYALGIA and ARTHRITIS. I regained back up to 285#'s which was my highest weight except when I was Prego. I did manage to lose 36#'s and keep it off for a couple of years!! But I am here to say if you follow all of your Dr.'s guidelines especially in the 1st year to a year and a 1/2. You really don't have much to worry about. You have been given a tool that will help you to become successful!!! Just keep your eyes on the prize and remember why you decided to take your journey. Every day that goes by it becomes easier and better than the day before!! Good luck!! Just don't let down your guard and become compliant while your journey proceeds!! You CAN do this!!
  21. Just put the two together that I've been feeling nauseous and having some stomach discomfort for the paddy week and so half....I stopped taking my nexium 2 weeks ago.....dr said ok if I had no issues.....have not had any issues since surgery 6 months ago so I thought I'd be fine. Did this cause issues for anyone else???? I think I'm starting my pill back in the morning.

    Time off of work

I just had the surgery last Friday and I'm considering going back to my desk job tomorrow (Thurs) for at least a half day. Not trying to brag, but the facts are I'm feeling great. I just flew half the day today and walked the airport terminal changes and drove around when I got home. I'll be back to work full time next Monday for sure. I had cleared working from home for two weeks but no way I'll need it. Everyone's different and your milage may vary.

    Long termers...

I have come to the conclusion that the work is never done. I have to "tow the line" most of the time.... but not ALL of the time. I want to eat to deal with stress, and go ahead and do that sometimes. I also have developed some activities that give me the "good feeling" I try to get from eating (and never really lasts more than a minute or two) I find that nature is my salve. I kayak, walk, bird watch, drive around in the country, work in the garden. This does more than almost anything to make me feel better when Im stressed or down. I also dance, which has helped me in many ways... body awareness, fitness, developing a community, confidence... I have worked these things into my week, every week, maybe 4-5 days a week... and I cherish them for all the pleasure and relief they give me. I cook. When I take the responsibility to cook my own food from scratch, some self grown, organic, Vegetarian.... I can take more control over the Protein content, the type of carbs and fats involved... and its an art as well. I share with others. I can my own jams, pickles and such. This eyes open involvement in the process helps me to really enjoy my food, and bring it to a level that reveres the taste and textures and where the food comes from, and all those complexities involved. I like to think about and experience food... but when I engage with food unconsciously, like I'm taking a drug or something.... and look for satisfaction... its not there. i try to be grateful.... its satisfying. Meeting and talking to people here can be satisfying. I learn so much here, I gain how to be myself better, How to relax and move forward to find answers, to sit with failure and see how it is a learning experience... to get back on track without self hate. I still have not really dealt with the "fat me". I look at photos of myself in wonder. I feel so sorry for her... its hard to take to heart that its me. I was so unhappy with my looks then... I really felt I was such a failure in that area. I was so successful in many ways except that one. I was brave then, and tried many things... I dieted, exercised, tried so many approaches to getting my body the way I wanted it to be, but none of them really worked. It felt like a curse. I am so grateful that I am still close to goal (surgery over 3 1/2 years ago), and seem to have a set of skills to stay there... although I know that could change.
  24. I wish I would have gotten my surgery years before my surgery! Sorry. Don't mean to be a smart ass, but it's honestly the truth. I had a two week full liquid diet. I think I was on Clear liquids a couple of days prior to surgery. I didn't stress it. I was very ready for this and I think it helped with recovery time. I also read EVERYTHING I could get my hands and eyes on. I went to The World According to Eggface and got a bunch of her recipes and put them in a 3 ring binder. I also made lists of what to buy at the grocery and what to bring to the hospital. I also made a surgery 3 ring binder with my hospital instructions, surgeon's instructions (diet, supplements, care of sutures, etc.), lists, labs ... I also put in an itinerary of things I wanted to do on my three week "vacation." Seriously. Horse back riding was number 10. Trips where you do a fair amount of walking were on there like zoos, flea markets, antique stores, livestock auctions, etc. I also bought work out clothes and moved all my Tae Bo tapes and all my weights to my TV cabinet. Now, I heal very quickly. Some others do not. I have had open abdominal surgery and arthroscopic surgery so I kind of knew how my body would react. I bought all my Protein powders, flavorings, mini muffin pan, pint electric ice cream maker, Vitamins, 1.5 cup food processor, digital kitchen scale, small single serving containers, baby fork and spoon ... I also made a LOT of Soup and crock pot meat and froze them in 1 cup containers. I still have some left. I eat the soup I made from time to time. I made high protein Soups. I just like to plan things to the nth degree. I had no medication other than the one dose of morphine I gave myself after they told me to in recovery. YUCK! I didn't take another dose. I don't like being out of it. If you're out of it you can't walk the gas off like you should. Again, I have a high pain tolerance and this was NOTHING compared to my C-section or fibroid tumor removal. When I got up after I got out of recovery (3 hours later) I would walk a lap around the floor and then stop and my room and crunch ice chips and repeat until I fell asleep that evening. Then I got up and repeated the whole process again until I was out of there. I Hate hospitals. They're full of sick people.
  25. So I went to my local family Dr last week and he told me I have high blood pressure and this is a first for me. So he told me to monitor my blood pressure for a couple weeks before putting me on medications. My surgery is November 10 in Mexico & want to get my pressure in check before then! Does anyone have foods they would recommend to lower blood pressure? Did anyone have high pressure prior to surgery? Were you ok or did u go on medication to lower it?
