    Give it to me straight

You ARE my story exactly! I've worked out since 1983 and didn't have a lot of co-morbities associated, i.e. diabetes, sleep apnea. Did have acid reflux and my knees have arthritis (but look at my age, for heaven's sake!)... And yes, my scale kept climbing, climbing, climbing! In the six months I went to the nutritionist, I lost a TOTAL of six pounds (and I really think my high weight was just on a bad day, luckily... ). I honestly thought this Band would never work for me, NEVER! But here I am--I still work out four days a week (two at the YMCA and two at Curves)--I'm not sure I like your doctor's recommendation that you quit working out :confused2: what's up with that???? Have faith, cakegal, it DOES work--as long as we maintain the discipline to let it help us. But it also means we have to totally submit to a life change. That's the key...
  2. Thank you for all the support and encouraging words. I did see Dr. Robert, NewSho, and I have decided to go ahead with him. I will be his third lap band patient. He has been skillfully performing surgeries for 30 years. He will be assisted by Dr. Garth and another surgeon who has had over 500 lap band surgeries. I feel like I am in good hands and am enthused about how the Weight Management Center at Methodist treats the whole person as I need a lot of support pre and post op and help with the psychological aspect of recovery from this MO. I am excited to hear about others who have lost 100 plus lbs. Thank you for sharing this info with me.

    Weight Training

I recently joined the Y and used my free "quick start" work outs. I have a question on weight training. I am already a big girl, 5'10 - 11 currently about 250# size 14-16. I have a lot of muscle, and I don't want to get bulkier. I have had several trainers tell me that weight lifting is not going to make me bulkier. Anyone know if this is true? I don't want to start lifting all of these weights and gain weight! I can handle a lot of weight, they are usally amazed at what I can do and for some reason no matter how many trainers tell me this I just have a hard time believing it! Thanks!

    Weight Training

I find at 5ft 10, what I can lift or hold appears amazingly heavy for smaller people! It probably wont bulk you up - the people who bulk up fast are usually ones that have large bodies in the first place due to a lot of muscle tissue - like you can be fat but have LOTS of muscle. For most women, it just wont happen, you'll get nice definition. But really, if you notice you're bulking up more than you'd like, its simple, stop doing it (so much). I've found though that lots and lots of running has given me the type of body I wanted, tall, slender, with definition/shape but not big muscles. I dont really do any more than pushups and tricep dips for my upper body - good compound body weight exercises for strenght and tone, and running takes care of my lower half.

    Weight Training

I do weight training 4 times a wk (2 w/a trainer) with a mix of cardio (running / elliptical / bike). I love it! I really am loving the way my body is toning up. My upper body looks great & my legs are starting to catch up - I noticed my calf muscles for the first time today, thinking wow they are "defined", not a lump of fat. I believe in it - but a balance of exercise is important too. I don't get paranoid any longer about the scale, since the clothing sizes are dropping wkly it seems.
  7. I would write to confirm that Dr. Osuna will be there. Also, I would recommend researching Dr. Ortiz in the event that Osuna is not present. I had no problems with Ortiz and liked him. That being said I would have preferred to be able to research him as well! This was something that could have influenced me to walk away but I felt peace about it so I went through with the surgery. Immediately after surgery while walking the halls, I did think to myself, Oh my, maybe I could have tried a little longer (to lose) before doing this... (It was the discomfort speaking!) Now as I watch the fat melt away, even with the complications, I'm so glad I did it! I can totally identify with the 200 mark you mentioned. I had lost and gained the same stupid fifteen pounds for the past 4 years! Now, I'm down 28- woohoo! Good luck to you! Amber

    Nervous

Thank you for the encouragement!! I am very excited to do this, just a little nervous that I'll fail at yet another weight loss journey. I'm sure that's a normal feeling, just have to remember why I'm doing it!!

    Upcoming surgery

Because getting proper nutrition in is so hard after weight loss surgery, a lot of surgeons wont want you to get pregnant for 18 months following your sleeve or bypass. Its just not safe for you or the baby.

    About freakin' time!!!!

Well I do feel a little restriction today though being on liquids this time and actually feeling ok in myself I think I am getting hungrier quicker...then I don't know if it is in my head!...I can't wait to eat something a little more solid! The nurse did my fill. She asked if I minded, I replied "So long as you are a good shot I don't mind!!" It didnt' hurt and was over very quick! She then said book in for your next fill between 3-4 weeks. I booked in at the 3 week mark  Doc was in a long consult and they usually do a quick face time and a hi how are you going on your first fill....they said you can do it next time if you don't want to wait...I was like great! out of there and off to work! I got 2cc's put in my 10cc band! Oh and a NSV today...one of the guys at work has been sick and off for the past 8 weeks. He came in today and when I walked in he said hey you're looking great you've lost a bit of weight *Really loudly* I said yes I have...then some of the other guys start saying "oh yeah I guess because I see you every day it isn't as obvious!!" then my friend who knows what I have had done said and your pants are getting SO LOOSE!! hehe maybe it is time I raided the wardrobe again!

    choosing a dr

In my case, I consulted with 3 surgeons and my final decision was based on how comfortable I felt. Of course, critical criteria which I asked directly were as follows: - How many years have you been practicing? - How many procedures for each type of surgery? - How many patients have had complications and why? - Patient reviews etc.... In my case, the surgeon that sold me the most was the one that not only talked about the different types of procedures in depth but also took the time to explain the fundamental relationship between our brain and food. That was key to me as he spent quite a considerable amount reinforcing how this was a tool and that the majority of work would be on me to change my lifestyle. I found his focus on the nutrition part golden cause that is what ultimately makes us gain the weight. Hope this helps and good luck with your final decision!

    Will it ever stop raining

It has rained none stop for the past two day, this use to not bother me. I would just get a gallon of ice cream and all my favorite foods and cook, eat, and sleep for two days. But now, I have energy, I want to do things. First it messes up my walks, you have to walk and exercise to loss weight. You can't get a LB and set on the couch, your energy level won't let you do that. In group this week we had two groups, the groups that exercise and loses weight and the group that does not and complains that they are not losing it very fast, if at all. They are also the ones that said they cheat more often than the other group. But don't worry, I am not talking about being a gym rat. I am talking about returning to a normal life, doing things, going to the park, museums, malls, things you avoided before. You know like working in the yard cleaning the garage. Anyway back to me, on Friday I forgot to eat, I had two protein shakes and then missed dinner. Just forgot, amazing. Yesterday I had one protein shake and for dinner I cooked a tuna steak and two crab cakes for me. Remember I am treating myself well. I also cooked a steak and mashed potatoes for the other half. I did eat 3 bits of steak, the first beef I had had since LB. Wanted to know if I could eat it, and yes it was very good. I ate my two small crab cakes and a few bites of tuna and I was done. All together maybe 6 ounces. That seems to be my max. Hope this helps you as much as it helps me.
  13. This stage is not about losing weight-it's about recovering!! Any weight loss should be considered a bonus! Your body is healing and adjusting to the new way of eating. The lump in your throat sinply means you drank too fat or too much at once or ate without chewing or ate to much too fast...slow down and listen to your body's signal. When you feel that sensation coming on you need to slow down or stop. I know when I drink something fast I getthe feeling. Good luck to you!
  14. I am two weeks banded. Before surgery, I went to the gym 5x per week for 30-45 minutes of cardio each time. I have been walking this week but when I am done, I feel some port pain. I am wondering what others did after surgery - I am anxious to exercise but don't want to do too much and mess up my recovery. Doc said one month without lifting weights (pushing or pulling etc.) and that we could walk after a week - but is the port pain okay? What did everyone else do?
  15. My last doctor visit is on 1 Nov. On that day, reflecting six months of doctor visits and a 15 pound weight loss, my package will be forwarded to insurance for approval. Now that the reality is sinking in, I'm scared. After struggling my whole life, fighting, losing 50 pounds, gaining it back, losing 100 pounds, gaining 50 back, I realize that this is the final end to a lifetime of low self esteem, finding clothes that fit, being belittled and put down for my looks. Is it really happening and can I really do it? Will I really see the person on the outside that has been fighting to get out for 46 years? Shopping at Victoria Secret? No more plus sized clothing? Is it real? Can it be a reality for me? I would appreciate any words of encouragement from those in the same situation. Thanks! Christi
  16. Hello all, I thought it was about time I made a post. I have been looking on the site for a few weeks now. My name is Chastity, and I live in Florida. I am 26 yr old, happily married to a very support husband. I started thinking about the band 1 ago, but changed my mind (thinking I could do it with just self control). Well I weight even more now. I had my first appointment with the surgeon today. I am starting opifast in the morning(Tuesday). My surgery is going to be November 18th. I am going to be self pay . I feel ready this time. I really enjoy reading about everyones journey, no matter where they are in it. I am 5'4 1/2 ( weird I know) and starting weight 286lbs(SHH). Hoping that the Optifast will taste ok:w00t:

    Half Way There!

Good job on the weight loss!! I'm sorry about your rough year. Hope it gets better
  18. hi emily, 100x over I congratulate you. What a terrific accomplishment. I'm so happy for you in many ways that your life is taking a turn for the better. Emily you said "weight didn't cause any of the changes" I agree. But i always think as you are losing weight you are starting to feel better on the inside, which shows on the outside. I mean your self-confidence, esteem all that good stuff. Of course having a better appearance makes you feel better on the outside too. Once again congratulations on your new job, being able to go back to school, living in your favorite city. Things are looking up up and away. What better person could this happen to? Oh yes, congrats on your continued weight loss - sorry we'll being seeing "less of you" kathy

Still can't belive this is real and going to happen

:laugh:I have been overweight my whole life. It seems like I have always been on a diet. I lose weight and gain it back. I am having the band on Monday and I am a big ball of emotions. I am finally going to take care of me. I forgot what that felt like. Weight is such an emotional thing and no one would undertand until they have been there. I have even decided to join a Overeaters Anonymous group to deal with the mental side of me being overweight. This is the beginning of my journey and I am embracing it with positivity. Now bring on November 3rd.:mad2::thumbup:

MrsG, I really don't know if he does that or not. I have been on a semi-liquid diet for 2 weeks. One small low-fat meal a day allowed. For some reason today has been the hardest diet day thus far. What pre-op plan did you follow. I like that ticker icon in your posts. I should maybe find one for me too.. for all the weight I am going to lose....I hope.
  21. I am in the beginning stage of the process hoping to get the sleeve in mid December. I really want to shed this weight but am very nervous about the surgery, what to eat afterward and really the whole process. So tell me what you love love love or hate hate hate please.

    6 Months Of Waiting :(

Check with your insurance for their definition of "6 months." Think of the 6 months as an opportunity to address your relationship with food. You should be able to get your self in better shape physically and emotionally before surgery, then the sleeve will be the tool you need to finish the job and keep it off. If you do not address what got you here in the first place, you are setting yourself up for failure. As others have said here, they sleeve our stomachs, not our heads. It is harder losing weight "the old fashioned way," but keeping your eye on the prize (surgery) will keep you going. Good luck, you CAN do it.
