    December sleevers,

10 1/2 weeks out-43 lbs lost since surgery, 129.5 lbs total lost
  2. I am so stoked to see just how people have gained health back from having this surgery.... People often say "it's a cheats way of losing weight", in fact too many people initially said "you dont need to have surgery". However, at size 20 on average for nearly all my clothes, and now size 10 - 12, they are now going "WOW i wouldn't have recognized you", and some don't actually recognize me. But hey, for me it was more about health....not looks. And yes i am extremely pleased with progress. Oh yes, I do have saggy upper arms and inner thighs but nobody sees that inside my clothes so that's fine for now. I am looking at another 8-9 months before thinking about further surgery to address the saggy bits as I said I would give it years... But for now I will keep on keeping on I sincerely wish you all the best of luck for your futures xx

Had a fill , no different

Kelly111 I was where you are when I first started this journey. I could eat anything I wanted. However, like you....I didn't because I wanted to lose weight. However, once I had my second fill....I knew I had it. It took me a while to get use to it. I really did have to slow down, eat smaller bites, and could only eat about 1/4 of a cup at a time. I threw up a lot for the first 2 1/2 weeks because I was not use to eating that way for the first 10 weeks after the band. However, I am learning to slow down and really listen to my body. You sound like you do not have enough of a fill just yet. There is no way that I could eat what I want now. I am thankful for that. I would call the doctor and tell him that you are still not noticing a different. As a stated to another member...be your own advocate until you get the fullness that you need to make the band work for you. Good luck on your journey!

    100 lbs in 3 yrs...

I totally understand the feeling like a failure. In 2001-02, I lost about 100 pounds all on my own. I dieted, excercised and just totally changed my lifestyle. I met my now husband in November 2002, and in the course of dating and getting married, I put about 20 pounds back on. Then came the babies...two of them in a span of 21 months. I put on 50 pounds with them and was very close to being back where I was when I initially started dieting in 01. I thought to myself, well I did it before on my own, and I can do it again. Well, it did not happen that way. I would lost 20 pounds and then put 10 of it back on. I did NutriSystem, Weight Watchers, and even did a medical weight loss program that used drugs. Nothing helped me. I used to look at all WLS as the "easy" way out, but after having a nervous breakdown in my dr's office over the fact that I just couldn't lose the weight, I relized that this was something I needed to look into. I am so glad I did, as I am down 43 pounds and so much happier with myself and in turn, I feel like I am a better mom and wife. Good luck to you!!

    30 Day Shred

I have completed 5 days, and it is a butt kicker. I am taking Sat/Sun off and will continue with it on Monday. I may have to do the first level for more than 10 days, however, because I am not sure I will be able to move on after 10 days.

    Is anyone stuck?

I'm in about the middle of my healthy weight range at 72kg (about 158, 160lb). I really really want to drop another 14lb. I'm tall and finely boned, thin is what I should be. I'm not one of those people who can weigh 180 at my height and look my best. And I love my running and really, for a runner, the lighter the better. I've been at this weight for 6 months now. But I've done jack sh$t about it, lol. I run, I eat well but I am not dieting, which is what I really need to do to lose weight when I have so little left to lose. I really need to get strict, count calories, etc. For me, maintenance is absolutely effortless, I simply dont think much about food anymore, but I'm sure running has a lot to do with that. Since I got to about 180, weight loss was no longer steady or easy, I'd plateau out and maintain for a few months, then have a few weeks where I ate much less (like on holidays when I was busy) then 10 more lb would suddenly come off, then I'd maintain again for months.
  8. What are your doctor's instructions??? Each are diff and just cuz mine had me on mushies at that stage (I had to do 10 days each stage full liquids - mushies - soft - regular) so by 21 days out I was moving to mushies.. Refried Beans (fat free with a little 2% cheese) And at the end of my full liquids I was eating about 1 cup of soups. Are you getting 60 grms of Protein in daily??? Or I should say what are your doc's instruction on protein - but I would say that most want you to get 60 grms a day - and on the 1st 3 phase I had to incoporate clear Protein drinks (like crystal lite but with protein - ck out Bariatric Choice - they have the clear protein drinks - 70 calories and 15 grms pt...
  9. I totally understand how you are feeling. I am 4 weeks post op and have only lost 12lbs, 10 of which were in the first week! I exercise 5-6 times a week and I really don't eat a whole meal but several times during the day I will eat small amounts of food. As the others have said you need to find some type of way to get your body moving and to sweat! I have gotten very bored of the treadmill so I am looking for some other ways to exercise. Also since you are still fairly new to the lapband I'm sure you haven't gotten to your "sweet spot" yet and once you do I hear the weight will melt off of you !! I can't wait for that time to come. Don't give up on yourself we didn't gain all this weight overnight and it isn't going to come off over night either. Be encouraged and just keep going!! Good luck!
  10. I am leaving tomorrow for TJ. I fly into San Deigo in the evening and I will get to the hotel late. I know there are lots of people that would like more feedback on Dr. Lopez, so when I get back I will post a detailed account of my surgery with Dr. Lopez. I would have liked more feedback when I was doing my research. (But I didn't find any negative). I also confirmed that he was a Lic. Surgeon in Mexico. I'm on day two of his required pre op fast and doing well. Yesterday was challenging. I think tomorrow I will be too busy and nervous to care about food! I also did 10 days of a pre op diet and so far I am down 9 pounds! Yay! I'm excited, I'm nervous, I'm second guessing myself but I am sure I need to do this!

    Cant Have Surgery ;'(

You should be able to call the surgery scheduling center and they should be able to give you an estimate of what you will have to pay out of pocket. It really shouldn't be much with it being just 10% of admissions costs. You might be looking at just a few hundred dollars.

    Cant Have Surgery ;'(

Don't give up! My insurance does not cover any weight loss surgery....I was self pay. We were struggling financially when i approached the subject of the surgery with my hubby....he looked at me like I had a horn growing out of my forehead! We have two kids in college and my once very successful business went belly-up last year because of the economy! I knew I had the option of a home equity line of credit (very low interest rates right now) or a health care credit card. It was scary to spend so much money ($9,500 total)..but now, looking back, it was the best money I have ever spent! You have to look at it as an investment in yourself! At 10% out of pocket, you shouldnt be paying any more than $2,000 out of pocket....and YOU ARE WORTH SO MUCH MORE THAN $2000! Do what ever it takes for your health....I've even sold some of my things on eBay to help pay for this! And...one other thing...at only 7 weeks out and 32 pounds down, I have already saved a lot of money on my grocery bill!

    Post-op Exercise

Geoff, Had to do a double take on your surgery date. It looks like 10/2013. I assume you mean 10/13/2014. As the others have said. First off, follow your surgeons guidelines. That being said, I have been going to the gym and doing cardio and complete weight regimens since 6 weeks PO. And I'm sure that without the workouts, this whole sleeve thing would not be working for me. Some cautions. - I had a unbilical hernia repair during my sleeve and subsequently avoided any strenuous stomach type exercises for a few months. And when doing workouts, keep the hydration up. Another point to keep in mind is to be able to build any muscle during the process and certainly avoid losing any while losing fat weight, you must get in your Protein. I do whatever is necessary to get in at least 100 grams of protein a day. At six months my weight loss has slowed alot, but my workouts have not. As I get stronger, I am able to do more and even with the low calorie diet, I need to maintain the workouts in order to keep losing weight to reach my goal. The process has convinced me that even when I reach my goal, exercise will be the only way of maintaining my weight and avoiding any weight gain. Good luck with your surgery. Keep us posted with your progress. FYI - Check into "My Fitness Pal". Makes it easy to keep track of your diet, your workouts and your weight goals.

Im either too loose or too tight:(

this is surprising to me to read also. i have been banded 10 months and not thrown up once. i was told by my dr it was bad/dangerous for that to happen and to try not too if at all possible (of course you get sick/flu, it can happen) i agree with missy, a new doctor maybe in line here for you.
  15. I am going to have surgery with Dr. Garcia on 01/30. I am so excited. Sending well wishes to everyone.
  16. That really illustrates the point about different body proportions. I wear a size 10, too.

How did I know you'd say that? I hope you and @@gowalking won't mind my throwing in my few cents although I'm tossing them not at the main subject matter. Because Kinky Boots, which received top industry awards, including the Tony for Best Musical, was written by Cyndi Lauper (music & lyrics) and Harvey Fierstein (book), be sure it's awash with affection and kindheartedness. The countless shoe stores on 8th between 5th & 6th Aves. disappeared years ago after many years in business. They catered to everyone, primarily the hip, young and young-ish. I wonder what the owners, Israeli immigrants, moved on to. Now that you've brought it up, I'm recalling Lee's Mardi Gras on the third floor of a building in what has come to be known as the Meatpacking District, bordering and west of the Village. It, too, closed many years ago. The shop catered to drag queens and transvestites, carrying clothing and shoes in the larger Miss sizes and plus. I think 10 was the smallest shoe size; imagine mid-high Mary Janes in 13. Having heard about it for years, I stopped in for a look-around once when I was passing by. The visit was fun and unexpected, the atmosphere calm, understated, dignified, etc., etc. I'd expected the most flamboyant clothes, but found simple things, some definitely dowdy. My guess is that those were to suit secret dressers. Even the lingerie was simple, maybe only a few frilly pieces.
  19. I'm at a stall too. I'm 19 days out. Lost 14lbs by the 7th day now it's barely coming off?? Feeling like its wls fail :-(
  20. I am hoping to get ESG at the Mayo Clinic soon. I have completed a 12 week behavior modification program that is required and I am close to getting the BMI to 35 with 10 more pounds to loose. It is not covered by insurance but that is not a problem for me at this time. I am choosing this because it requries no overnight stay in the hospital, no pre surgery diet, no incisions and it can be adjusted and reversed. I hope to loose about 40 pounds. Who here has had it, and how are you doing? Dede

What Foods did you have to give up?

Bread, pizza crust/dough, broccoli, some noodles, deli meat, steak Those are my no no foods for now. I am sure I will discover more along my WL journey. ~Liz~ banded 03/10/06 Dr.Oritz 241 highest/237 surgery/203/150 5'7''

What Foods did you have to give up?

I'm only 2.5 mos out but I'm filled to 50%. So far there are no foods I've had to give up, but there have been some I've wanted to. Ground sirloin/chuck/hamburger for one. Now that I have to chew things so much, I find the texture very unpleasant, and it quickly loses its taste, plus you can only chew it so much and it never quite goes to goo, more like goo with pieces of ligament in it. Blech!! I never cared for hamburger too much pre-banding, unless it was in something else (lasagna...) so no big loss there. I've given up white bread, again - no big loss. I haven't even tried to eat it post-banding. I don't miss it so why bother, plus I know that it causes so many people so much trouble that I'm like -- why bother? I've given up corn for now, but may try it someday. I think it's something I'm likely to have a hard time with, so while I miss the corn salsa on my bol, I'm not hurting any. Let's see, what else... lots and lots of other things I haven't necessarily given up, because I could easily have them, but I'm choosing not to. Things like ice cream (the real stuff), butter, fatty dressings, reguar Peanut Butter (IMO - the low fat/carb really does taste better, esp. the Peter Pan lowfat). I haven't tried steak yet, but I'm not a big steak fan so no real loss there either. Pre-banding I'd order chicken over steak 9 times out of 10. Now if I ever have the problems with chicken that I read about so many others having... then me and my band are going to have to have some words... Edited to add rice - haven't tried it, don't find it worth the risk. If there are a few grains stuck on something else I'm eating, like lastnight the meat from my chicken burrito had a few grains mixed in it, I'll eat that, but not a forkful of rice.

    Pre-op jitters...

I know it can be scary. I was afraid the day of surgery. More about other things. It happens so fast. I remember going in and the next thing I was trying to wave my hand around to get the nurse. It was so strange. If I didn't have a pain in my belly I wouldn't have known it happened. For me the pain was strange. It was a sharp feeling near my belly button. It was the port. I was so out of it I couldn't really speak. From the meds. I did however manage to wave my hand around to get the nurse. She asked if I was in pain. I grunted "yes". She gave me pain medication. Don't know what it was, and I didn't care. Right away I felt better. Mind you the pain wasn't that bad. I didn't want any pain. Anyway they gave me plenty of pain killers and I was fine by the time I headed home. In fact I slept the whole ride. Didn't feel a thing. It really isn't so bad. Nothing one can't handle. Atleast for me. It was worth all of the recovery. Once your home in your own bed you feel safe, ad comfortable. Well, the comfort of home atleast. I did take pain meds for 10 days or so. It really wasn't that bad. Everyone is different and has different experiences. For me coming on here and reading other peoples stories helped my nerves. I hope it does the same for you. I wish you the best of luck and a quick recovery.

    Pre-op jitters...

Hi, Just wanted to add my voice to the others telling you that you are not alone. My surgery date is 3 days away, March 20, and I am bouncing off the walls. It is so difficult to concentrate on anything, like work, for example (which is what I should be doing now, instead of being on these boards :nervous) . The only things I have found that help are trying to concentrate on positives. I am lucky, there is a bandster support group in my area and I went Thursday night. It is a small group, but 2 of them were banded in Mexcio, as I am going to be, and they were very reassuring. Everyone but me is already banded and the lowest weight loss was 58 pounds! I still have fears, about the surgery, about going to Mexico to have it done, about the $$$$$, that it won't work for me, worried about complications.....but I am forcing myself to think of the positives.....hopefully my type 2 diabetes will go into remission and I can lose a bunch of the meds I am currently taking. And, yes, looking and feeling better and smaller size clothing. Already with the preop diet I have gotten in jeans I wasn't able to button a few weeks ago, and yesterday I tried on another smaller pair of jeans, and although I could not possibly go out in them yet because they were so tight, I actually did get them buttoned and zipped (I couldn't breathe, but I will be able to after another 10 or so pounds:llama: ) . That helped my jitters alot. Somewhere, another person with an upcoming surgery posted about being restless and asking for advice what to do about it.....I never saw any suggestions, but if anyone has any, it would certainly help. Right now, I am obsessed with reading these boards (the positive ones, I try to stay away from the negative ones right now, just before surgery). So, that's my 2 cents. I know it is normal to be nervous just before the surgery, but it isn't much fun. Maybe we could try "holding" our sweaty palms together??? :phanvan P.S. The dancing llama is for our wonderful boy llama, Chip.
  25. This may sound silly or crazy to some but I am very excited yet very scared about losing weight. I was banded on 1/19/07. I have lost about 28 pounds thus far. I have already experienced alot of firsts such as finally being under 300 pounds (after at least 20 years) and fitting into a size 22 pants after wearing 26/28 and a few 30's for years. One of my ultimate dreams was to get into a pair of Levi's. I did get in a size 24 (the biggest they sell in women's dept.) and they are now baggy. Alot of family, friends and co-workers know I had lap band surgery and have been supportive (although there have been a few negative people). They tell me I am "melting away". I have joined Curves and I think I have lost more in inches than the pounds show. Everyone acts and says it's such a "drastic" change. I don't see "drastic" yet but I appreciate the compliments and feel they are sincere. Do any of you who have already been banded have problems with not seeing all of your weight loss? I have been overweight for so long that it's scary to think about weighing 200 or even a size 20 or 18 but I am beginning to think that is possible. I am scared too because all I have known is 26/28+ for sooo long. I'm already excited when I go in the stores and have more options; especially size options, but yet I feel nervous and alot of pressure from fear of failure. I have not had a fill yet and it's becoming a struggle to lose a pound. I am thinking that it is time for a fill because I am terrified of gaining. But as long as I am losing a pound a week, the doc doesn't want to give a fill. I feel I need a jumpstart. Hope this doesn't sound too crazy and believe it or not, I work in mental health. Just wanted to vent and know if anyone else out there feels the same-excited yet afraid?
