I'm new and undecided.

DITTO.....what Tiffykins said!! I had my CRAPband for a whopping 9 months!! Don't do it! My sister just had her revision surgery yesterday, she had her band for a year and a half....not worth having to go through another surgery!

Jaffa Now that was good, I wish i would have thought about doing that!!! Those things are just awful!! How are you by the way?? And when are you going to do your revision?

bmi at revision surgery

I'm really interested in this too. I am actually going to be a sleeve to bypass revision because of GERD/Barrett's, and am wondering if the recovery is any easier than your initial surgery if you now how a normal BMI. I'm also sort of nervous about losing too much too quickly.

bmi at revision surgery

I had my band removed at 25 BMI due to complications... a slipped band (twice), acid reflux, Gerd and pain. However, I did not qualify for a revision since my BMI was so low and my sleep apnea went away. Since the removal I have gained all my weight back and more due to medical issues and medication I'm on. I am now at a 36 BMI and reapplied for a revision but my old insurance denied it 3 times stating it was not medically necessary although I regained, BMI is over 36 and sleep apnea returned. I went through the process over and over, classes, paperwork, dr appts you name it and although my band was removed due to medical necessity I struggled to finally get the revision approved. Point is you may have a difficult time getting a revision approved if you are at a low BMI.
6. I was banded March 25, 2008 Yes I have thrown up! I would throw up occasionally the first six months when I would try new foods or eat improperly - meaning not chewing each bite enough, eating too fast, etc or attempting a food I simply knew I couldn't consume. However, I developed a concentric pouch dilitation after another abdominal surgery almost a year post op. When that happened, I threw up daily, just about every meal, or anytime I put something in my mouth. It varied. I couldn't pinpoint exactly anything, it was very fickle and not normal or predictable. I thought it was normal for awhile, but it was not. throwing up like that is not normal. once the problem was identified, I went through months of trying to fix it nonsurgically with fills and unfills. Got sick alot. Finally had to have a revision. Hope this helps!

August 28, 2014 sleeve is done.

I got my revision band to sleeve on Aug. 28,2014 and I've experienced so much pain. I was able to pass gas without any problems and drink water smoothly but my head is throbbing (lack of coffee) . Do you know if we can drink coffee?

Biotin

I take 5,000 mcg per day in one capsule, but there is more in my multi and more in my hair skin and nails vitamin. I hate to say it, but all of this does nothing. I think I just have expensive pee. My hair fell out when I had band surgery and has never recovered when I had revision surgery. I have new hair coming in, but it's still falling out!

food addict I'm not sure

I came to the conclusion that I am a food addict after reading several books These books also tell one how to deal with the addiction. Boiled down to the basics: one must avoid trigger foods just as an alcoholic must abstain from alcohol. The usual trigger foods are are sugar, flour. white potatoes, rice, and processed food. "Processed food" is anything in a bag or box in the center aisles of the supermarket. Shop the exterior aisles where one finds fresh produce, meats, poultry, dairy, and frozen vegetables. There is a withdrawal period that is uncomfortable, but after a couple of weeks the cravings for the trigger foods diminish. Unless one of the trigger foods is sitting right In front of me, I no longer have difficulty avoiding them. I have lost 93 lbs by cutting out these things, 70 lbs prior to RNy revision surgery and another 23 lbs to date post surgery, I recommend these books Food Junkies: Recovery from Food Addiction by Vera Tarman Weight Loss Surgery Does Not Treat Food Addiction by Connie Stapleton Why Diets Fail (Because you're Addicted to Sugar) by Nicole Avena & John Talbott

Really nervous about tomorrow

aloudwhisper Are you revising to a sleeve? or just removing it? Good luck either way seems like you will be happy to get rid of your band. Embrace not what I want to hear weeks before my revision from band to sleeve but I will be prepared.

Band slippage

IF I'd have had that many problems, I'd be looking to revise as well. Surgeons included!

Pre-op Dieters, check in!

I'm just a few days out from surgery. Felt better on liquid diet after day 3. Today is 8th day on liquids & I'm down almost 10#s! I found out I was approved at last minute, so started diet last Sat & no cheating! Gotta make sure liver is shrunk! Revision from band to sleeve & feeling a bit nervous!
13. I am so happy that you posted. I was also banded in 2003 and am waiting to see a new surgeon. I am really very scared of what they will fin in terms of damage done by the band. I want a revision but more than that, I want this thing out of me. I am not feeling well most of the time now and I think it is related to the band. Can you tell me what removal was like? What did the surgeon say happened inside? Did you have adhesions, scarring, erosion?

Count down

It's great that this forum exists now. I am a sleever, and I am eager to read the experiences of DS people, in the event of a revision years down the road. Good luck!
15. I had a revision on September 10th with no complications at all. Any surgery has risks attached to it. Maybe review with him what he is afraid of, what complications maybe he is just a fraid to lose you. It has been the best decision I could have made and have no regrets. Good Luck.

Grr.. Noo! Need advice.

So my mom had lapband October 2006. I had lap band November 2009. She has lost like 65lbs total. Well she was down to a size 14, and became severely anemic and was told to either have a blood transfusion or gain weight. So she took all her fill out, gained 20lbs, and hasn't taken it back off. Back when she was a size 14 she was working out pretty much every day and eating a lot better. Well now she's going to see a revision specialist to talk about getting bypass. Even though she wouldn't let me get the bypass or the sleeve, told me she wouldn't support me, nor pay for it. Now she eats candy all day/every day, doesn't work out, nothing. She wouldn't even play wii Fit w/ me. A lady in her office had bypass and has lost like 95lbs, but she also lost some of her hair and has sagging skin. What can I say to convince my mom this is stupid and she's not giving her lapband a chance? Besides saying exactly that, because I tried that. She smirked and ignored me.
18. Dr. Jossart,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Been getting conflicting information about revisions. 1. The band should be removed first than after x amount of time a sleeve can be placed. Rational: The area around the band will be irritated after taking the band out due to adhesion having to be cut to get the band out. 2.Taking band out and sleeve in the same procedures. I will have had my band ~1 year. What is your view? 19. This is my first post. I had a lap-band in 2007, never lost more that 55 lbs, never found the "sweet" spot. Took saline out of band May 2011, gained 30+ lbs. I was going to have Revision surgery to the sleeve with Dr. Aceves in December, but I chicken out. Now I have the surgery scheduled with Dr. Umbach in Nevada for March 9. I am scared because... I am my son's only parent! What if it doesn't work, just like the band? Shouldn't I try Medifast first? People tell me it is TOO extreme, and try to help me figure out what else I can do. What if it doesn't work? Maybe there is a hormonal reason I can't lose? What if it doesn't work? I am 5'8", 315. I have HBP, hypothyroidism, PCOS, Anxiety/Depression, and now I am anemic and have Vitamin D deficiency. I was not heavy growing up, but not skinny. I weighed 140 lbs at 18. At 29, (180 lbs) I tried to get pregnant, so I took shots, etc. Well, 4 tries later it worked, but I weighed 240 lbs. I only gained 13 lbs, while pregnant and gained another 35, within months of giving birth. CRAZY!!! In 2008-09, I tried (5 times) again for another baby, more shots, etc. No luck, but more weight. Sorry, this is SO long. I don't have anyone to tell my story to, so you are it! :smile1: Thank you for any advice on my anxiousness. 20. I had a sleeve July 2019 due to a lot of issues had a revision to gastric bypass 2/2020 had not had any candy at all in that timeframe. We had a 21st birthday celebration for my daughter and I avoided all cake, soda and other goodies at the party but while cleaning up there was one leftover peanut butter cup left in the candy dish and I rationalized it in my head that well it’s peanut butter and peanut butter is a source of protein (I know I was making excuses to myself to eat it) so I popped it in my mouth and chewed it up. About 5-10 minutes afterward I started feeling sweaty and nauseated (not like I need to vomit just an icky feeling). My family has a history of diabetes (not me personally but my dad and brother are both insulin dependent. Do you think since I had the surgery I better get checked for diabetes? (I don’t plan to try and eat candy again but wasn’t sure if this is a “normal” reaction to introducing sugar to my new body or something else)

Sleeve vs lapband...

Thanks so much Everyone! Congrats on your success! Wow Crazypants that is amazing that your dr doesn't do lb anymore...that speaks volumes. So happy to hear from people who've had the lb and revised to sleeve. It's such a scary decision because every body's body is do different. U w has 2 csections do I'm not as worries about the surgery as I am the recovery with 3 kids and full time career. What was your recovery like? Is 11 days off work enough (I can be at desk if needed ).

Sleeve vs lapband...

Good luck with your journey. I'm a band to sleeve revision because I got tired of ER visits in 2012 because the band just closed on its own... Painful projectile vomiting damaging my insides. I always protected my port. If I exercised too much port was painful. Constant adjustments = time off work = copays.... The slime was gross.i had absorption issues. Lol Sleeve... 4 months out. Amazing. I have to take Prilosec 2 times a week but wahhh. I barely get to wear "new" jeans/capris before I have a buy a smaller size. I am down over 50... I think... I don't weigh.... I update my sig when I see my doctor. My dr did my band in 2008 and sleeve in 2013.... He doesn't do bands anymore because of all the problems he's seen!!!

Sleeve to Bypass due to REGAIN

Gosh we’re so much alike. I read your other post about the fear. I’m going in this morning for my revision VSG to bypass. I was fearless for my sleeve but wide awake worrying right now. I too am worried that I’ll only lose 10-20 pounds.
24. Can you kind of walk me through the first day? Check in, tests, etc? My flight arrived in San Diego at 10:30 am. Ernesto the driver picked me up at the airport and we drove about 3 hours to Mexicali. He stopped once at a convenience store so that you could buy a cold drink or a snack and use the restroom if you needed it. After we arrived at the hospital at about 1:30, I gave a urine sample, a blood sample, had a chest X-ray and an EKG. The coordinator gave me an antibiotic and an Ativan to take that evening, and if you have not already paid she will collect the balance of the money due for surgery. Ernesto drove me to the hotel. Pickup the next morning was at 7:00 a.m. Catheter? If so, before you are asleep or after and when does it come out? No catheter, but I had a surgical drain that came out on the 3rd day.. How long are you hooked up to an IV? I was on an IV the day of surgery, the day after, and part of the 3rd day. It was taken out before my contrast study. Are you feeling well enough to walk to the pharmacy by yourself the day before you leave? Is there an opportunity on the pre-op day? Yes, I felt well enough to walk to the pharmacy on the 3rd day, and depending on what time you get to Mexicali on the pre-op day there is time after your testing. Are you allowed to eat whatever you want for dinner on pre-op day? Is there a decent place to eat at or very near the hotel? Yes, I could eat anything I wanted on pre-op day. I ate at the hotel, I didn't think it was expensive--I had a glass of wine and rib-eye tacos for $14 including tip. Do they really not have wash cloths at the hospital? I don't know, I don't use wash cloths. Did you have diarrhea on going home day? No. I had diarrhea 4 days after coming home when I tried my first Protein shake. If anyone had a revision: On me, Dr. Aceves plans on doing a barium swallow test and an endoscope under heavy sedation on pre-op day. If you had this done, how groggy were you after? I didn't have a revision.
25. Not finding anything specific unfortunately, at least nothing "new" or recent (or clearly outlined). Rebound rates aside, if you've got a slight reflux now, it will be amplified with the sleeve and reduced with the Bypass, based simply on what the surgery does. And in the off chance that you end up with a major problem... there is no going back after the sleeve, 90% of your stomach is rotting in medical waste somewhere (or been incinerated), with the bypass, everything (for the most part) is all still in there. The sleeve is ONLY a restrictive surgery, there isn't any reduction in caloric intake caused by the surgery itself outside of forcing you to reduce your intake, but then there are all the "slider" foods etc. I made the mistake of choosing the lapband back in 2011 because I was under-educated about the bypass, and well, I didn't want to make any permanent changes, which is ironic, because, I didn't get any permanent weight loss. So, second surgery to remove the band and revise to the bypass in March and I really couldn't be happier... I really do wish I went with the bypass from the get go. A personal (in real life) friend of mine had the sleeve, and he's getting it revised to the bypass because of the lack of progress. Just things to be aware of.
