I had hernia repair too. And I guess the bypass is worse because the first few days I dropped f-bombs everytime I moved, breathed, or thought. And coughing......man My soul left my body. The gurgling is probably gas, or your food settling in your pouch. I got that too. We are gonna make it. It's up from here.

Drinking..not sipping
Midwest Grateful replied to BypassTheBS's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
One of my concerns about WLS has been taking sips vs gulps, especially since I typically need extra fluids to swallow pills. I appreciate this post and all the feedback. I hope I fall into the category of being able to drink more water, although it sounds uncommon. In March during an upper GI where they ruled out Barrett's Esophagus and reflux issues, they dilated my esophagus. Two weeks later my esophagus returned to its previous slightly narrow state. I was cleared for surgery - my choice of either sleeve or bypass, so that's good. I plan to get some chewable supplements, but the extra gulps would certainly help. (Sleeve surgery scheduled for late July.) -
HELLO! I go on a lot of vacations, even if just a quick weekend. Point, we do eat out a lot and my first vacation was about a month after my bypass. I did take shakes and a few protein things I keep on hand. My first go, was to just eat what I have already had at home because I was afraid of getting sick. So I had a crab cake but just picked the jumbo lump crab chunks out and ate that with like 2 green beans. Someone in my family ate the rest. haha Now, (over a year out) and back to a normal eating diet and can eat anything. I usually try to just make a good decision. But, rarely eat an appetizer or just a bite or 2. Never finish a meal and whenever possible (and we can agree) I will share a meal with just about anyone I am with. When you eat so little and restaurants give you so much food, eating a few bites of someone else's isn't a big deal. My people don't even notice. haha Another tip I have heard a lot of people doing, ( I don't personally) is to ask for a TO-GO box right away and pack up at least half of or meal before you even start eating. Keep in mind when you eat out everything is drenched in butter or oil. I literally just add a serving of oil to my food logs when I order out, unless I straight up eat junk like a fried piece of chicken or something like that. But, even if I order grilled chicken I add the oil serving. Ask for things without butter, it will still be cooked with it but won't be lathered in it again before it is served. Just take it slow, you will be eating so little that you will be ok!

I'm not hungry but my 🤬 is thinking about food. I had a dream about it. Lol. The gastric bypass is supposed to be the "gold standard" for weight loss surgery. Apparently you lose more weight and keep it off.
-
Haha I can imagine! What’s the difference in a full bypass? Also how has your hunger been with your new stomach?
-
Boredddddd???? I've been bored chica. Lol. And of course who doesn't want new pals? How are you feeling about the surgery? And questions. I had a full bypass though.
-
Thanks 🙏🏾. I have. However I had oral surgery right before my bypass so I have two bottles. 🫣😏. They kinda make me dizzy though so I try to grin and bear.
-
🎉 Congratulations and welcome 🤗. Nope I'm 4 days post op. Full bypass.

Does Eating really get easier?

I think there's some difference between sleeve and bypass on that front isn't there? OP - I have also had a sleeve procedure and 19 months on am totally loving it. I wish you all the luck in the world! -
Help! 2 1/2 months Post Op and Not Eating
Ace35 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I’m 2 1/2 months post op rny gastric bypass. I want to eat but fear of gaining weight and possible vomiting are holding me back. So I don’t eat. The most I eat is once a day if that and if I eat it’s a pea to a nickel size amount. I read all this stuff online and it makes me feel like I can’t have anything. I’m frustrated at this point. I’m down 75lbs. I lost 35lbs before surgery to prep my body. I have been having cravings but no hunger pains. I fainted once and this new vertigo issue kills me every morning. I just don’t know what to do at this point. -
I had bypass on June 5th. I would pay so much to eat some crackers or some scrambled eggs. I’m so tired of liquids. I want some kind of real food in the worst way! Liquids are ruff!!
-
What surgery are you having? I had gastric bypass Friday June 2 and was discharged the next day. I took one week off and plan to return to work this Monday. My issue wasn’t pain but dehydration after having diarrhea for almost 48 hours midweek. You never know how your body is going to respond after major surgery. I do know that you are not allowed to drive within 24 hours of anesthesia, and after abdominal surgery you need to be able to quickly apply the brake to stop your vehicle (doing this would probably hurt too soon after surgery). I would plan to take at least a few days off if at all possible.

that's not normal. Strictures are more common in bypass patients (about 5% of bypassers experience them) but pretty rare in sleevers - but on the other hand, they're not unheard of in sleevers. I'm wondering if that's what's going on. I'm not sure i those will show up on an ultrasound or CT scan or not. Usually they find those on an upper endoscopy. I have no idea, though - that just doesn't sound normal at all.

I wonder if it’s an absorption issue. Worth asking your surgeon & prescribing doctor. Many find time release meds don’t work as well after a bypass. Check where the meds are absorbed too - tummy or intestines. There are usually alternative formulations or meds you can take instead. I wasn’t a great sleeper before my surgery. Not insomnia. I usually could fall asleep, but would wake & lie there for 3 or 4 hours or just not go back to sleep. It started in my late 30s. Stress/cortisol levels, then age (menopause), etc. contributed & I think waking & not sleeping became a of a habit too - usually woke at the same time. Now I get in 8 hours most nights. I have odd nights of waking for an hour or so but I will go back to sleep. Some nights I even get in 9 or 10 hours. Thank you surgery. I hope it may help you somewhat as well.

My Gastric Sleeve Journey
TRClark23 replied to TRClark23's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had my final pre-surgery appointment with my surgeon today, it was my pre-op appointment. My surgery was supposed to be scheduled for 6/16, but I found out that it was pushed to the 23rd because my surgeon is going on vacation. I have to start my clear liquid diet on 6/15 and I'm not looking forward to that. Aside from that, I have to pre-register the week of the 23rd and do a blood test and that's all I have left. I'm actually kinda scared and worried. Aside from a sleep study test, I've never stayed in a hospital overnight, let alone had any surgeries or anything. I was reading online that that death rate for this surgery is 1 in 1,000. I nervously asked my surgeon today if he'd done a lot of these sleeve surgeries and he responded that he'd completed his 1,000th not too long ago... 😬😂 My biggest concern is blood clots and dying from it. I have four kids and three of them are under 7 years old. My doctor is a general surgeon that specializes in gastric sleeve. Initially I wanted the full bypass surgery but he told me that he didn't do it. That it was "physiologically not natural." In the area that I live in, I had two surgeons that accepted my insurance, him and another guy that's from another country and was a couple hours away, so I decided to go with him and trust him. He's been pretty great so far. I've had countless people (not surgeons or experts) telling me that the sleeve would be useless for someone that needed to lose over 80lbs. Then again, I've seen people telling their stories on YouTube that had the sleeve and lost 150-200lbs. It's hard to really know what to believe. I know that I need help, regardless. I'm sorry for the long pointless post, but I wanted to post my thoughts and feelings, if for nothing more than to look back on them in the future. -
May 2023 surgeries
dIsLosingIt replied to WVJess2Less's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had gastric bypass 5/17 and I’m doing well. Walking 2-3miles every other day, drinking flavored water throughout the day to stay hydrated, took my first set of vitamins today (not bad), trying to eat slowly. So far i have eaten turkey burger, tuna with light mayo, pureed chili, yogurt, scrambled eggs with cheddar, protein drinks. 3 of my 6 incisions have begun to heal (glue fell off) and the others are itching. I had my first experience with food getting stuck in my chest.. I thought i was dying. No more dry turkey burgers for me😩 I hope everyone is doing well. -
FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY have an update on my revision!!
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My close friend who's a nurse practitioner posted this on my facebook post about it: "IF you need a feeding tube in the future, they can bypass the stomach and give you a J tube (in the jejunum) below the stomach, or for a short term issue, give you TPN, directly to the veins". So this just made that major concern not really a concern now. I'm feeling even better about this. I can't wait to get this over with and get back to my life!!! -
FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY have an update on my revision!!
SleeveToBypass2023 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I have been really quiet on here because I was just trying to get rid of the last of the health issues I had going on. Polyps are gone and uterine fibroids are gone. I had an appt with my bariatric surgeon today and we discussed getting the revision now that I have a clean bill of health. Looks like it'll be mid July sometime. BUT...my revision is a little more complicated. Here's what I was told: Normally they leave the bottom part of the stomach when they do the bypass because there might be a need for a feeding tube at some point, or something like that. HOWEVER, with my situation, the part they would normally leave is where all the polyps were. So the surgeon is going to completely remove the bottom part of the stomach (making my stomach about 2oz instead of the 4-5oz it is now) during the bypass surgery. He said that's not ideal, but given my situation, it's the best course of treatment for the GERD, esophagitis, gastritis, and getting me back to being able to work out and live a normal life again (which is really all I want). He said it does present a problem later on if I need a feeding tube or whatever, but that's a big "if", and considering all of my issues right now, it's worth the risk, if I agree. I agreed with him and I'm waiting for the coordinator to call me to schedule the surgery officially. I'm so close to this being over. I can see the finish line FINALLY!!!!! -
I have had a Gastric Bypass since 2001, and am very still down in weight, and I eat liverwurst all the time. It is one of the easiest foods for my pouch and digestion. It is very nutritious. Don't demonize one food or the other. Enjoy things in moderation.

I started binge watching Mike and Molly TV show when I was recovering from surgery. For a few different reasons: One, never watched it before and found it made me laugh. It deals a lot with food and struggling to lose weight as well. Two, my doctor calls me funny lady. Says I make her laugh and remind her of Melissa McCarthy. I'll take that. Loved her on SNL and the movie Bridesmaids too. Three, Billy Gardell. Have you seen this guy's transformation after Gastric Bypass??? Amazing. He's quite open about how he lost the weight publicly. Said he wants to live to see his son get married. His weight loss makes me smile. People talking negatively about his choices, not so much. People are saying he's no longer funny after the weight loss. I blame it on his new sitcom though. Do you think people are less funny after losing weight? Check this out...

OK, had the gastric bypass and hiatal hernia repair on June 6, spend the night in the hospital. Was actually able to sleep without normal sleeping drugs- because I was exhausted- got up at 3:30am to head to hospital and I think the trauma of surgery wiped me out. But, it went well- all work was done laparoscopically without the need to open me up (I was told that was a possibility if they could not do it all laproscopically). I'm now on a full liquid diet. Pain relief is accomplished without any opioids- using gabapentin, Tylenol and Celebrex. Am supposed to refrain from any protein drinks for 3 days after surgery and will start adding vitamin supplements after first (2-4 weeks) phase. There was very little bleeding (I got off blood thinners several days before surgery). I'm surprised at how good I feel- I did take a long nap after I got home- but did a fair amount of walking today (the first day after surgery). Since I am now post-op, should I start another thread or just continue this one? Thanks for your support. All the folks at the hospital and surgical team were very helpful, pleasant, they even have a discharge lounge to enable those who rely on ride shares to be picked up in a dedicated driveway. (My wife helped here with visits and transportation). -
I don't think protein bars would count. I think I ate a lot of things like cheese sticks, hummus, cottage cheese, hummus - although it's been several years so I can't really remember - someone not as far out may be able to suggest some options EDITED to add this that I just found on the Mayo Clinic's site. But your clinic may have guidelines as well.. https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/gastric-bypass-surgery/in-depth/gastric-bypass-diet/art-20048472

Anyone still visiting? It's been pretty quiet. Hope everyone is still working on the new life. It's very easy to feel cured. Kinda like a heart bypass patient. For the first year or so, they're on pins and needles at the first twinge or hint of pain. After that, some go back to the old ways thinking they are cured.... a bad thought process. While we are feeling better and reaping rewards for our efforts, it can be just as easy to fall back on old ways. Take care, beware and good health to all!

Hi, I had surgery (Mini Gastric Bypass) in Jan 2023 and I am losing weight. Total weight loss is 50lb (in 23 weeks) . However most of this was lost in the early month and I have slowed to approximately 1lb per week, if that. The slower weight loss is fine, I can cope with this because its going in the right direction. What has be very anxious is that i find that I feel like i have no restriction and can eat anything. To maintain the weight-loss I need to tell myself not to eat. I am fighting with the 1lb weight loss each week to make sure its a deficit, terrified that it will go up. I don't feel like i have a tool. Are there any other MGB patients that can eat anything - bread, rice, chocolate, cereal, potatoes. I do suffer nausea if I don't eat sufficient protein but i am so worried that i have gone through surgery and i will spend the rest of my life 'dieting' with little help from my tool. Anyone else in the same position? Thanks Cals

Liquid Multivitamin Recommendations
RnYBabe posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am already terrible at swallowing pills, so I know it's going to be an issue when I have my bypass in August. Does anyone have any liquid vitamins for bariatric patients that they recommend?
