  1. Oh man I can relate! Every day I was at least a 7 or 8 on a 1-10 scale and really most days I was at a 9-10. I would cry daily. And took pain pills and drank to help dim the pain. It was an awful existence non-existence! I can tell you the difference at 5'4" and 56 years from 287lbs to 135lbs today is dramatically different!!! I still have neuropathy from cancer treatment/surgery, but my pain at the end of the day is a very manageable 3-4. I live life and can be active now! It's night and day difference in pain relief. And I only have had pain pills for an emergency surgery-and no alcohol for pain management either! It's a miracle! Can't wait for y'all to experience this!!!

    Make sure yours comes in SR, I went from 150 Extended Release twice- Daily Wellbutrin to. 100mg Slow Release 3 times daily. My depression is in submission, like an alcoholic I will never be free- but it's still GOOD, Tomkitten likes me taking them still, says I'm neater and sweeter to be around if I DO- so your frequency or strenght might change but nobody expects you to go Cold Turkey at this point of Life!

    Don't drink much soda but yes got an issue with energy drinks well have to cut them out soon before surgery.. Gave up alcohol few years ago thank God..

    I’ve read this entire thread and it’s been so helpful to know we have each other. For now, I’m going with this plan... First, I was able to get back to 118 but I found that I liked 115 better so I just float between the two now. It’s my three pound window. Second, I can have a cookie or a bite of pizza crust every now and then but I’ve found there is no room in my world for that type of carb on a regular basis. I haven’t touched a slice of bread in a couple years...no buns, no sandwiches, no biscuits...I simply can’t. You might as well ask an alcoholic to taste your drink. I’m fine with the carbs I get from proteins and natural fats and veggies. Finally, I’m frequently monitored for for vitamin/blood/mineral levels. My health is incredible, especially for a woman in her mid-50’s. When someone comments that I appear to be too thin (and I’m amazed that people, strangers even, feel free to do so) I just smile. I no longer wonder if I need to do something. I feel fantastic. After 27 years of retirement, I’m a working actress and model again. My husband is loving, supportive and my family is thriving. I just continue to track everything on LoseIt and adjust my intake accordingly. It’s almost effortless. I'm no longer overthinking this. I’m just using the habits that got me here to keep me stable. I'm living life and enjoying the freedom this weight loss has given me back. I wish all of you the peace and happiness you’ve helped me find.

    Green Tea, that I already have. I use it as my regular tea daily. Since I am one of those people that can't wake up unless I have coffee, ( Because I drink it to wake me up, not fall asleep like decaf does)....Peppermint Tea sounds best. Yes, I am a coffee addicted, but I would rather be addicted to that than opioids, marijuana, or cigarettes or alcohol

    No wheat, sugar, refined carbs, processed foods soda, coffee, or alcohol for me. Don't miss any of them.

    Surgeon had no list nor limits, he just said, try stuff out one by one and see if it agrees with you. He did say no NSAIDS, but we are talking food here... Nutritionist said no Alcohol nor Carbonated Drinks (I choose to drink them anyway, and nutritionist gives me sad, disappointed faces). I say no bread, pasta, rice. Everyone says: Limit/watch the sugar.
  9. This whole idea of cheats doesn't really sit well with me. I do eat 'unnecessary' foods, but just in very small amounts - small enough for me to still lose weight. I can eat 5 or 6 chocolate buttons without wanting to binge on them. For me, if there are forbidden foods, I feel like I'm 'on a diet' and that mindset has always failed for me in the past...I have a tendency to rebel! I know my Achilles heel is alcohol, so that is what I avoid, apart from special social occasions. It's a balance that seems to be working for me...if it doesn't in the future, then I'll change it! ps When I do drink alcohol on special occasions, I am extremely naughty and then I unexpectedly lose weight the next day - I bet it's dehydration! 😲😀

    I would consider a wine and soda spritz with a very dry - low sugar option for the wine. Over ice with citrus squeeze. Beer over ice and wine over ice. Rum has too much sugar for me so I get that sweat and nasty feeling. The rates of post WLS and alcoholism are alarming. The consumption of alcohol is another body changer but not as readily discussed. Gin at times has lower proof. - I was a bartender in college.

    just be careful - transfer addiction is a risk for bariatric patients. I've seen more than a few people post on various internet forums that they developed alcoholism after bariatric surgery. That's not to say you can't enjoy a drink once in awhile. But...watch it.

    Thanks. I actually go out a LOT (job hazard). The problem is I really feel my drinks so I'm looking for ways to minimize. My go to has been vodka and diet cran. Thinking maybe rum and coke since rum is often half the alcohol of vodka. I have gotten good at not overdoing it. Post surgery I feel it way more and much more quickly, but it also passes faster too. will have to look at a 'tall' in my are that usually is a double (2x the alcohol). Really something like flat beer would be ideal, low alcohol and it takes a long time to drink.

    Ask for your cocktail as a "tall" where the ratio of mixer to alcohol is greater which would minimize the alcohol effect. I like grapefruit and vodka.

    Wondering what folks are doing in terms of drinking. If I want to go for a night out, but don't want to get plastered what can I drink if I don't do beer or wine? Beer is too fizzy and wine puts me to sleep, so I stick to low calorie mixed drinks, problem is they tend to be way stronger so over a couple hours I can easily have more than I want. Anyone have any low cal / low alcohol mixed drinks?

    I drank alcohol on rare occasions during my weight loss phase. My first drink was less than a month post op. I DON'T recommend that, but there were extenuating work circumstances. I decided after that that I would very rarely drink because I did not want the extra calories. It seemed crazy to eat 500 cals, and then drink another 100+, that's an extra 20%+ I didn't need. Once I got close to maintenance, I began to drink similarly to how I did pre op. It's probably somewhat less now, because my tolerance is a little bit lower, and I can't drink & eat simultaneously.
  16. I feel most of you on alllll these things! Man, the life we used to have! Mine: Seeing my belly button (my daughter mentioned this to me the other day) and my neck (best friend lol).. Not spending $10k on food and alcohol! Looking forward to hiking in Hawaii! Not asking for a dang belt extender in the airplane and not worrying about being in the middle seat (although I still don’t want that seat) Just a few..

    Some of the worse ulcers ever were at the anastomosis of a gastric bypass patient who started drinking a little wine again - 14 year post op!!!! Many others, as well. Those surgical tissues remain fragile forever, I'm thinking. Alcohol is a terrible irritant to tissue of any kind, but for surgical areas, even worse. Everyone makes their own decisions and takes their own risks, but for me, alcohol is on the "never again" list.

    I am a nurse in the GI department of our hospital. I've seen the damage that alcohol can do to WLS patients, even years post op. I will never touch a drop of alcohol for the rest of my life. I've worked too hard to add any additional risk.

    That is a great goal! I'm pretty open that I'm not a super great rule follower. But I drank almost no alcohol during my weight loss phase. That was a huge deal because my work life includes A LOT of drinking. So it's great that you recognize that it will hold you back from your ultimate goal!

    Your doctor or nut will most likely tell you never. But there are several people on this site that have had alcohol with no ill effects. I myself have had a small amount at 2 months out and was fine. I think its a very individual thing.
  22. I can't find an answer on how long to wait after a Gastric Sleeve to have a drink. I've seen answers from one month to six months to never. I will speak to my nutritionist tomorrow, but I was looking for a quicker answer because of a work event this evening.

    Any August Sleevers out there?

    Hey friends. Doing an update. I will be sleeved one year on August 17th. I have lost 95lbs. I am 5’2” 26 years old and weigh 138lbs. I am a size 8 in pants/dresses and a medium/small in shirts. I have saggy skin. Luckily it can be hidden with clothes. Photos are before and now. Problems: I am terrible with my water intake. I am always exhausted. I have zero energy. I don’t do pasta or breads: I tend to overdo it and end up vomiting. I am able to eat bad. That’s something I am scared of. Just like before the surgery, I am still constantly thinking about what I am going to put in my mouth. My brain will always have a fat soul. I have to use little plates or else I make my servings too large. I think I am content with my weight now. I need to start exercising. I do not exercise at all. It’s hard to eat well during the summer since I am a teacher. However, during the school year, I am strict with my diet on week days. I allow slip ups on the weekends. I still snack and drink alcohol, but that is just a weekend thing. Still trying to learn how to change my mindset. So beyond grateful for this surgery and my new life!

    💜AUGUST 2019 CHALLENGE💜

    In! 1. Okay so this sounds weird, but I’m setting a personal goal for August to avoid alcohol entirely. Wine had been creeping back unto my diet and then there was a tequila tasting and....well no wonder I had a bit of a stall lately. I want to average losing 2 pounds/week this month and that’s the ONLY way to achieve it. 2. VGS on 2/6/19. Still losing and approx 20-30 pounds from goal weight. 3. Weight this morning was 174.0 and I’m 5’7”. This puts me at a BMI of 27.2. 4. Fun fact: back in 1991 I was eating lunch with a friend at a diner in Shawnee, OK. We were being pretty loud and laughing and dishing about different guys,etc (I was 23yo) and my friend whispered to me that there was some “really cute guy” in the booth right behind me eavesdropping on our convo and laughing. Me being me, I started throwing packets of sweet and low over my shoulder seeing if I could hit him. Apparently I got him a couple of times and told him I was “just sending some fake sugar” his way. After he left, the waitress came over and asked me how in the world was I brave enough to flirt that outrageously with Brad Pitt. My response was “who?” Honestly I’d been in pharmacy school for the last 5 years and had no clue who he was. Just thought it was some random guy.
  25. First, a rave. I'm about two months post-op and down almost 40 pounds. I started weight training at a new subscription gym called The Exercise Coach and love it. My weight loss is quite noticeable and I get plenty of compliments. I'm down two sizes. I like looking in the mirror again. I am being patient; I know this is a journey. While the stalls are annoying, I know that it's part of the process. I don't freak out if I go up a few pounds; I know that my body is fickle and still adjusting. I haven't vomited or gotten the "foamies." I had no complications from surgery. I poop regularly. I haven't had any hair loss. Overall, I feel like everything is going exactly as it should. Now, the rant. I really, really miss eating a full meal. The kind where you have a variety of foods on your plate. By the time I get all of my protein in my new tiny tummy is too full for anything else. Sometimes I supplement with a protein drink or shake just so I can skip (or limit) the protein at my dinnertime meal and add a small amount of salad or veggies. I always thought I loved to cook, but now I realize that what I really loved was EATING what I cooked. I still cook for my husband, but it's become a chore instead of a joy. He will have a steak, potato and salad while I eat from a small plate containing only tuna, or salmon, or turkey, etc. He is a simple eater -- easy to please -- so I no longer get creative with meals because I don't get to enjoy the finished product. I used to plan meals in advance, shop for fresh ingredients, prepare them with precision, and present them beautifully. I also really miss restaurants. My husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday this week, and all I really want is to go to a nice restaurant and order some fresh seafood and a glass of good wine. But I didn't propose this because I don't want to order a fabulous meal and only eat ⅛ of it, and not drink. I don't really miss drinking alcohol, but I do miss having a good glass of wine occasionally. Thanks for listening. I feel like I can't share these feelings with my husband because this was my choice -- and this is my journey. I don't want him to think I have any regrets, because truly I don't.
