On Black Friday, I bought a Ninja Creami for my family. The Creami allows you to make your own ice cream pints. You make your liquid mix, place in it one of their plastic pints and freeze it for at least 24 hours. You put the pint in the machine, spin it for a few cycles and you get ice cream. Here is why it is great for bariatric patients: you can make delicious, high protein, low sugar ice cream. Not an exaggeration. For my first ice cream, I mixed a 16 oz Premier Protein 30g chocolate shake, a packet of Chocolate Toffee keto chow, 1 tsp of MCT oil and 4 tbs of 2% milk. I had to put that mixture into a blender to get it all mixed because it was pretty thick. But then I poured it into a plastic pint and froze it. When it was done, it tasted just like a creamy chocolate ice cream and had the following nutritional profile (per MyFitnessPal) 356 calories 9.2g of fat 5.5g of net carbs 4.4g of sugar 57.7g of protein 109% of my calcium 34% of my iron 2,135mg of potassium 27.5% of Vitamin A 26% of Vitamin C (By way of comparison, a pint of Blue Bell vanilla has 640 calories, 32g of fat, 68g of sugar and 16g of protein). The Creami is not cheap (Normally $170, bought it for $125 on Black Friday). But if you can afford it and you like ice cream, I highly recommend it. You can use protein shakes, protein powders, Greek yogurt and a ton of other bariatric-friendly ingredients to make something that tastes like ice cream that you can eat guilt free.

Sudden low energy at night
Sunnyway replied to vikingbeast's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try a snack in the evening that includes dairy and fruit, such as 1/4-1/2 C fat-free greek yogurt or cottage cheese with some berries. I find that that gives me an energy boost and eliminates pre-bedtime craving. -
November Surgery Buddies!!!
Lifestyle Changer replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My nutritionist has me starting eating things like scrambled eggs, canned chicken or tuna with very little light mayo to moisten it so it won’t get stuck going down while swallowing. I can eat lean ground beef, thin sliced deli roast beef and turkey, shrimp, cottage cheese, yogurt some cooked vegetables. I still need at least one protein drink included in my day. My nutritionist stated I have to introduce these foods slowly to determine if my new stomach can digest these food. She some patients find out that the foods they ate before surgery find out they are unable to eat afterwards. I am so excited to start transitioning to textured foods but nervous at the same time that my new stomach will handle it now. Wishing all my fellow November Surgery Buddies who are transitioning to the next phase of your diet plan. What do you all think of changing our group name from “November Surgery Buddies” to “2021 November Surgery Warriors” I believe this group we are all warriors from our decision making, preparing or already has their gastric bariatric surgery as well as joining BariatricPal for support. I will understand if no one wants to change the groups name. I just wanted to bring it up as a suggestion. Reading these posts and seeing how much all of support each other made me look at how much we have a lot of strength and are uplifting thoughts for each other. It reminds me that we are warriors of battling our challenges together. -
Do you still do 6 meals a day?
Sunnyway replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I usually have 1/2 to 3/4 c fat-free greek yogurt or fat-free cottage cheese with some 1/4 c fresh or frozen berries and a little artificial sweetener. It's a quick light breakfast but contains protein and fiber and is satisfying. With a good breakfast I'm not tempted to snack during the day. Other days I have oatmeal cooked in the microwave (1/2 c rolled oats, 1 c water) with some chia or flax seeds and chopped pecans or almonds. Nuke for 3 minutes and serve with fat-free milk or plant-milk. A little cinnamon and artificial sweetener make this a sweet treat that is filling and helps keep me regular. There is lots of fiber in the oatmeal, seeds, and nuts. Do not use instant oatmeal--it's full of sugar. -
Hi everyone! I had Gastric sleeve in Mexico on October 28th and weighed 283. Today I weight 268. My weight has been 268 for 2 and a half weeks, I managed to get down to 266 Saturday but then went back up!. I’m not eating over 7-800 calories, take in a good amount of water, my protein could be better but I definitely hit at least 40 grams which is what was put to at least hit (40-60 per nutritionist). I move around and walk for at least 15-20 min. What is going on? Is something wrong with me? Did I pay 4500 for nothing? I’m very depressed and thinking I’ll never lose weight. I eat a variety of food I don’t limit anything but it’s all home food not eating pizza and stuff. I eat grilled chicken tenders, sweet potatoes whole wheat toast boiled eggs veggies yogurt all healthy and no more than 4-5 bites per meal. I’m very very depressed that even a surgery can’t help me lose weight.

Hi Shopgirl. Yes I do somthing similar. Breakfast is my largest meal and every morning I eat: Unsalted mixed nuts. 30g Kashi Autumn Wheat Cereal 30g Fat free plain greek yogurt 170g One medium peeled boiled egg 44g 1/2 avacado 60g Slice Swiss Cheese, 35% reduced fat 23g. I sometimes eat 120g of blueberries instead of the avacado. That is really filling. My two other meals are smaller. -
I had sleeve. I’ve been having protein shakes, crystal light, bone broth with hot sauce and protein powder, fage 0% yogurt with tajin seasoning, a little cream of wheat with broth, and protein water. I’m getting pretty tired of the full liquids.

I'm 13 months post-op. I don't measure food nor do I worry about volume of food. I've found that my body tells me when I shouldn't eat any more. I just take longer to eat. For instance: one 4 oz low fat Greek yogurt + a handful of raspberries + 3.75 oz. container of unsweetened peaches + 2 T of granola is a lunch for me. I'll eat about 1/3 of it, stop, come back to it 15 minutes later and eat another 1/3, stop, then finish it 15 minutes later. So I'm eating what seems like a lot of food, but it is spread over 30-45 minutes. I do the same thing when I go out to eat. I eat however much I feel like I can comfortable eat, get a take out, then eat the rest when I get home. I'm retired, so stretching my meals over longer periods of time is easy for me. I know many people don't have the luxury of taking 45 minutes for a meal. Just wanted to share my experience.

I don't log meals. I log calories I eat in a day. I used to not do that, but the amount of stalls I have is annoying so I was trying to see if I was eating too many calories. I was. I'm not anymore lol. So Friday's log was as follows (not doing Saturday's because I was busy shopping and baking all day and although I only ate 1115 calories... that was because I skipped lunch because I'm an idiot). So yeah, Friday's: Banana (105 calories) Light Greek Yogurt (80 calories) 2 no sugar added fudgesicles (80 calories) Turkey Enchilada (homemade. 250 calories) Light Greek Yogurt (80 calories) Protein Shake (160 calories) Tater Tot Casserole (340 calories) Light Greek Yogurt (80 calories) Almonds (160 calories) Total Calories= 1335 Calories For reference, I'm almost 22 months post-op so I'm a bit farther in my journey. I also don't drink my calories. I drink Powerade Zero's (which have no calories, no sugar, no fat, and only 2 carbs per bottle). I also round up my calories btw which is why they're all even lol. My calories for that day are probably closer to 1315-1325, but I always round up because I'm weird like that. And I've already reached my goal weight, but haven't reached maintenance yet.

Post op.... Taste in my mouth... Its it normal?
summerseeker replied to Lou51's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I agree, the same has happened to me. My pre op is 0 carbs and only protein from low fat milk and low fat yogurt. Toothpaste is my best friend -
Had gastric sleeve on Nov 1st. Had to stay a week in the hospital because a night nurse gave me Tylenol pills the first night and my stomach decided to swell. I was NPO (nothing by mouth? For 5 days. Came home on the 7th and the 12th developed lactose intolerance to all my protein shakes and yogurts everything I had for protein. It’s been a struggle getting enough protein, today I’ve been so bloated and burping constantly the Dr now thinks it could be my gallbladder or my small intestine is not digesting well. I’m a little frustrated but trying my best.

I had my RYN on Nov 1st, recovered well, and just washed my hair and noticed bunch of hair came out, and i was in disbelief, brushed my hair and a string of hair came out! I cannot believe that i am in hair loss? At 18 days? I am supposed to be on the puree stage, but i like only light and fit greek yogurts by Dannon and chicken broth with carrots. But i do struggle to get in the 80g of protein and water because of the chest pain when drinking/eating as jt passes down. I have to go very slow. Is this "normal" to have hair loss before 3 weeks? Vitamin schedule question
lizonaplane replied to OutdoorsGirl's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I just take one ProCare health capsule that has 45 mg of iron in it. I take it at night, because it makes me nauseous. I've tried taking it with meals and it was worse. I only take calcium on days I don't get enough from my diet (protein shakes, yogurt, etc have a lot of calcium). I haven't had blood work done, but my surgery center had a list of acceptable vitamins, and the ProCare health is truly one a day. -
Anyone with a traveling job?
lizonaplane replied to lizonaplane's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been pretty successful recently. I go to grocery stores and buy fruit and FF greek yogurt for breakfast, and often hummus, chicken and veggies for lunch. I'm getting so sick of hummus tho! I am still going out to dinners because it just depresses me to eat the same meat and hummus and veggies for too many meals. I try to order things that are high protein and low carb, but I often order Pho or some other noodle soup and eat just the meat, veggies, and broth I am certainly comfortable with speaking up, but most of the time I can just eat what I want of what I get - like skipping the rice or potatoes. I can eat most things, but I am still having a hard time with lettuce, so if I get like a chicken ceaser salad at the airport I'll just eat the chicken and dip it in the dressing. -

Losefly replied to lizonaplane's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I travel at least a week a month. Will typically buy yogurt and hard boiled eggs for breakfasts as well as a case of water to keep in my hotel room. I will typically go to a Whole Foods or Sprouts and grab something for lunch, shredded chicken, salad with chicken, or other protein option I can find. I do lots of business dinners and have had great success just talking to the waiter/waitress about what I can eat and find most very accommodating. You just have to get comfortable with speaking up. -

I have a hard time with chicken breast because it is so dry. I do pretty well with Chicken Salad though. I mix the chicken, onions, celery etc with a teaspoon of mayo and the rest greek yogurt to get the consistency I like. It goes down much easier than just chicken. I have very good luck with all kinds of fish. I don't eat sugary things at all any longer, just have no desire to have anything sweet. The only thing I miss is BREAD. I just cannot eat it, it just makes the center of my chest hurt and makes me want to vomit. I love bread but it is not worth the trouble. -
no more dairy...ugh! Breakfast?
learn2cook replied to pintsizedmallrat's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Gage makes a lactose free yogurt I can tolerate. All Cabot Hill Fam cheeses from Vermont are also lactose free. Cabot hill makes a 50% lite cheddar that tastes good. Watch out for deli meats because they are all made with a milk binder except Boar’s Head meats. Be careful with any “worsted “ meats too. I just had shakes and Fage yogurt during the mushy phase because everything mushy has lactose. Ground meat phase will come soon and get better, sorry. -
I strugged with the pre-op liquid diet and I did break down and have a yogurt on day 4. Just get back on track and keep pushing. The pre-op is the hardest part for some of us.

My answer to temptation is to not have stuff in the house (like not making muffins) or eating some protein like Greek yogurt or string cheese. If the craving persists after that, I promise myself that I can have the craved item if I wait for half an hour. I've usually lost interest during that half hour.

no more dairy...ugh! Breakfast?
cellbell replied to pintsizedmallrat's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
There's no law that you can only eat "breakfast foods" at breakfast! I am not a big egg person either, and in the soft phase I had things like tuna or really soft shredded chicken--in my case I mixed it with a little greek yogurt for moisture and protein, but you could try non-dairy options instead, like broth or taco sauce. Are you having any sensitivity to whey protein since it's sort of dairy-adjacent, or is that working for you so far? Since you said that lactose-free didn't solve the problem, I wonder if your body is just not happy with some other component of the food right now and might eventually resolve itself as you heal. -

Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to pintsizedmallrat's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I've had the coconut yogurt and its not bad. Sometimes you have to try a few before you find one you like. I've never been a huge breakfast person and I absolutely despise eggs in every form, so morning meals are always tricky for me. Most often I simply have "leftovers" for breakfast. When I was in the puree/soft food phases, I'd make a batch of thin refried beans, thick soup, hummus, mashed cauliflower, or other similar foods and then eat it for multiple meals in a row, or I would freeze them in single serve containers and rotate. Oatmeal or cream of wheat with protein powder mixed in might be good options, too. -
I’m so over protein shakes
ColieCallwell replied to j McFadden22's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Agree with this - the unjury chicken soup isn't terrible, but still tastes like protein powder. I'm in the same boat, over the protein. I've been using the Bariatric Advantage Creme flavor, it's less sweet. I mix 2 scoops with fage greek yogurt, 8 oz of water, and 2 tbsps of PB2. It's like 50 g of protein and tastes ok. I'm not entirely sure it's just lactose intolerance; I took lactaid with a dairy product the other night and almost immediately started getting symptoms so I'm sort of not too hyped on trying it again--A big part of this process is supposed to be "listening to your body" and I feel like that was a pretty loud, clear message not to try it again. I'm getting some coconut yogurt today to try and if it works i'm going to do that with vegan protein powder to get some additional nutrients. -
tajin is tasty on plain Greek yogurt.

Anyone else having VSG end of Nov 2021?
summerseeker replied to Elaine77's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My surgery is 24th Nov. I have done 2 of 3 weeks of the pre op diet. I am in the UK and we seem to have docs with different diets here. I am allowed Milk, veg, yogurt and fruit. It works out at about 1000 to 1200 cals a day. I am sick and tired of the veg prep and the boring menu. Its cold here so I want warm food. My poor husband hates my farts TMI. I can look at my doctors photograph and call him an absolute b*****d and a torturer and please would he end this and move my surgery forward to this afternoon Anyone on a more restricted diet has my complete sympathy,
