  1. Today has been a month today since I had revision surgery. Surgery was easier than lap-band surgery in my opinion. I weighed 264.8 when I got home from surgery, and I weighed 242.2 this morning. That is 22.6 pounds in a month. I have went from 2x shirts to XL already. I am now at a stage where I can eat what I want but can't eat much at all. I have no problems eating and drinking but have trouble getting all my protein in just eating. The weight came off fast for 2 weeks but is coming off pretty slow now. I don't like to really go out and eat now because I can't very much at all. Other than that it's coming off slowly. Been a good month but definitely a change in my way of life.
  2. Unfortunately my Insurance didn't cover the band and will not cover the revision so I am heading to Mexico for revision on Sept. 7th. I'm nervous and excited all at the same time. I was banded July 2008 and it went very well for about 5 years until I got a stomach virus and was throwing up everything I put in my mouth and at times it seemed somethings I didn't . I called my fill center to get an unfill just to find out they had closed without notice UGH and couldn't find anyone to do the unfil because no one wanted to touch a Mexican surgery patient. My stomach ended up swelling so bad from the vomiting that I ended up in the ER with kidney failure. Finally they emptied my band WOW what a relief! After a few days in the hospital and kidneys back in shape I was sent home empty and starving. Once again no one in my area would fill me afterwards so I gained back 80lbs in 2 years partly due to depression and partly due to just being a jerk and excited about eating things I hadn't had in 5 yrs I want my healthy life back and this dang band (AKA my frenemy) out of me. I have Chosen Dr. Carlos Altamirano in TJ as my surgeon. I'm looking forward to following the progress of others that have had revision already. You see so much about revision patients having slower weightloss but I have all intentions of putting that myth to bed. Good luck to everyone on their journey, It's nice to know there are others out there going through the same thing and can understand what someone that has not been in this situation can.

    Helping kids

I had a lapband in 2001 when my boys were 9 and 12. My oldest is a worrier and my youngest is the silent type - who knows if he is a worrier, right? I revised to the sleeve when they were 19 and 22. Anyway, we kept it light for the band procedure. They knew I was going into the hospital and at that time, in Germany, they kept me for 5 freaking days!!!! In the USA, you have to be on your deathbed to even be admitted to a hospital (ok maybe not that bad) so it was hard to help them understand that I was okay even though they would not let me out. My EX (their stepdad) did a great job of keeping them entertained/distracted combined with visiting me in jail (hospital)... it was a real balancing act. My basic feeling about all this is that it is very difficult for children to understand all this and I don't want them to worry so I would really minimize it to the extent possible. when I revised to the sleeve, my children were young adults but still concerned. I stayed overnight in an outpatient place. I did NOT want visitors but my EX felt they should see that I was okay. We played cards and had some laughs even though it exhausted me to have visitors it was a good decision because they could see I was "ok". I know you didn't ask this question but I have to add something kinda interesting. I hit goal in Feb 2013. I pulled out before pix of myself recently and both of my boys looked so sad. they told me they don't remember me looking like that. They didn't realize how heavy (lets be honest, i was huge) I was. It made them sad, shocked and then proud of me in all I have achieved - all at once.

Bypass or sleeve...will the answer come to me?

It can be overwhelming but I think knowledge is key! I am in the revision process and thought I knew a lot 1st go round. I am learning even more. I am definitely doing group this time. I didn't get a chance last time and I think it is beneficial.
  9. Hello! New to this site on the gastric bypass side anyway... I was a previous member before and during the golden days of the lapband. The golden days are over, I am so ready to get the band out... It seems there were different stages of life with the band in the past few years, that I thought were bad and seemed to get more uncomfortable. The more horror stories I hear the more I realize this thing is crap and should be taken off the market. I started the process to get band removed and revised to bypass in Oct 2013, Met all the requirements and wasn't approved by psych, did therapy and it helped, then as a military family we moved and had to start the process all over again. So I finally have a surgery date August 12!! I received the insurance approval on Friday !! Whoot! Whoot!! I am so excited, as well as a little nervous. I know several bypass patients who have been very successful for 10, 15 and 20 years... I am ready to live a healthy life forever. I am in the process of buying my Vitamins and trying really hard to do the modified pre op diet until next week and then I will start the pre op diet. Which consists of lean meat and veggies, and 1 fruit a day. Which is too far out from what I am doing already. Although I am super excited these are my concerns, was wondering if yall have had any of the same concerns. I told my boss I was having surgery, didn't mention what type he's a doctor and didn't want to go into details, and judgment of the lapband. But I feel like I should tell in case their are complications. I am scared to death, I will wake up with the band removed and the bypass not completed. And last surgery is on the 12, and I have to be back to work the 24th. I work in a small practice and there is no one to cover for me if I need more time. Thanks to everyone and cheers to getting the band removed and starting a new life!!

Bypass or sleeve...will the answer come to me?

I like your honesty and rhyming skills. ????. Welcome! Choice of surgery is a highly personal subject matter. I can tell you that for me I agonized over it a lot, and really did some soul searching. I entered the fray dead set on the sleeve, but as I got deeper into it, researching, and listening to other's accounts I ended up switching to the bypass, which I'll be having on 07/29. I'm older, so my metabolism has slowed. So maybe I would benefit from having malabsorption in addition to restriction. And I have a wicked sweet tooth. I was concerned about the GERD issue that some people who opted for sleeve have suffered from post op, to the point where they're considering revisions to bypass. And while it's nice to think that optimally I would be able to eat anything after sleeve, but in smaller amounts, I know that for me that could well be a slippery slope back to weight gain. In the end neither surgery comes with guarantees and complications are always possible. So you have to weigh the pros and cons in relation to your lifestyle and expectations. Good luck!
  11. Congrats on your revision, please let me know how it goes. I hope all goes well for you.
  12. I am in the process for revision as well. The sleeve although a great tool, was not the right surgery for me. I wish you the best, as I know it is an emotional and difficult decision. I am also a bit nervous about the outcome a 2nd go round.
  13. Sounds like you are a good candidate for the bypass. Not because the sleeve "failed" you, but because of the horrible reflux. I think the sleeve would have worked for you if you were able to eat properly, but it sounds like you couldn't because of the reflux. Catch 22. Good luck with the revision. I hear it almost completely eliminates the reflux. And now you also have less to lose
  14. I'm still pre op for bypass so I have no nuggets of wisdom to offer. Just wanted to welcome you and say how sorry I am that you've had such a difficult experience. I hope the revision gives you the results and healthier life you are seeking. Good luck and hang in there. You're young and have a lot of good living in front of you!
  15. To make my long story as short as possible. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and high cholesterol in 2008 the onset was an extreme weight gain that I had no idea how to control. So I started going to mediplan weight loss clinic got me some diet pills too curb my appetite and a B12 shot. I began to lose weight but after awhile the weight began to come back even though I was working out regularly but the pills no longer suppressed my appetite. I kept trying different diets but nothing seemed to work. So in 2010 I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at the age of 25. So again I changed my eating habits continued to workout but the pounds kept adding up until I was almost 300lbs. My diabetes was completely out of control so for the next 5 years I stayed in and out of the hospital battling my diabetes and my weight would drop 20lbs and I'll gain 20lbs back. Until November of 2013 I was crying because I had been once again hospitalized for my diabetes and I was truly afraid I wouldn't live to see the New Year and it was right around the corner. I went to see my PCP for a follow up visit and was talking to the nurse and she suggested weight loss surgery to me she said it would help with getting all of my medical problems under control. I began to do research on WLS, I talked to my mom about the benefits and risk of WLS and my mom told me she'd rather see me trying to do something about my condition instead sitting around waiting to die because she was not prepared to bury another one of her kids. That conversation with my mom encouraged me to go through with WLS. SO I went to two different weight loss seminars that informed me about the Lapband, Gastric Sleeve and the Gastric Bypass. With both seminars I knew right away that the Lapband wasn't the option for me. So I was left to choose between the sleeve and the bypass. I heard so many good things about the sleeve and so many scary things about the bypass until I chose the Gastric Sleeve. Which was really the wrong choice for me. I was sleeved May 2014. So I'm now 14 months out from my original surgery date and has been very unsuccessful with the gastric sleeve. The morning of surgery I weighed 268 and I'm now 215lbs. I've followed my diet exactly as it is in my binder. I've been dealing with a lot of vomiting and my acid reflux is 10times worse than before I was sleeved. My diabetes is still a major problem. After 14 months of struggling with my sleeve my doctors have now just decided to scope me to see why I'm having issues with my stomach. I still exercise 3-5 times a week and I have yet to have a significant weight loss my sleeve hasn't helped as promised. Now I'm looking into a revision to the RNY bypass hoping it will fix my issues and assist with my weight loss. My gastric sleeve was an epic fail..... Am I the only person that hasn't been successful.
  16. I am interested in what happens with this revision as I am considering it
  17. Hi katybelle7, Thanks for the response. Yes, I'm very nervous about my first meeting with the surgeon. I hope my age is not an issue, I've worried about that, too. At this point, all he knows is my name, age and insurance info. He has no knowledge of my extensive past history with the Molina Band and that's what I'm really afraid of. I haven't found anyone that's had a revision after having a band in place for 30yrs. I really dread the endoscopy and finding out what shape my stomach & esophagus are in. Thanks for the support. Texy

  19. Getting closer to my revision and feeling excited.

  20. my first surgery I went in for bypass and ended up with a band due to adhesions and scar tissue. I am now going in for a revision and my surgeon is going to try again to give me the bypass but I also signed papers for a sleeve. I have surgery on the 31st

    Discouraged - need to vent

I just had a revision 6 weeks ago. I had a stricture and had it ballooned and was able to eat soft foods. The esophagus is closing up again And will have to have the procedure done again. This maybe what you are experiencing. I am still eating yogurt and cream soups and that is getting old real fast!!
  23. Tuesday will be a month since I have had revision surgery and I have had no issues with reflux at all. I don't even need the Prevacid they gave me for a month. I have lost 21 pounds already.
  24. I had an abdominal ultrasound that revealed gallstones. I'll have my band to sleeve revision and gallbladder removed on Aug 17th. Seems like a lot in one surgery but my Dr. assured me it's safe. I've done quite a bit of research and many Bariatric docs are taking the gallbadder out if it has stones because rapid weight loss aggravates gallbadder issues. Personally I rather not have to have another surgery if I can help it. Wish me luck. Less than a month to go.
