Lots of complications after bypass..... anyone else???
Lem32 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
HI all!!! So I had my bypass on 11/17/21 a few days after I started getting really nauseous and couldn't eat of drink. The Friday after Thanksgiving I begin throwing up massive amounts of blood and clots. My surgeon rushed me to ER. They did a CT scan and everything looked good. They admitted me and started fluids. over the next week I had an endoscopy and a text on my gallbladder. The endoscopy showed no new blood but my stomach lining was VERY irritated. The gallbladder test showed it was not draining properly. He decided he was going to remove it. At the same time he was getting concerned because my numbers were out of whack and my protein levels were dropping. They put a central line in and began feeding me TPN through it. Gallbladder surgery went well and he was very happy he removed it because it was very distended. I was discharged a week ago with TPN. So now I am home with my central line and TPN every night. I still can't really eat anything and even drinking causes me pain and nausea. Anyone experience ANY of this??? -
Oh good! Glad to hear. I did some searches after I asked and saw that most people are able to lie flat after the first week out or so. Sitting in a recliner for too long is making me sore already!

Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first
Sunnyway replied to chiquitatummy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Pre-surgery, I am down 3-4 sizes on bottoms (size 26-28 from size 32). I'm wearing big baggy tops for now. I've stitched up the size seams of all of my underpants and bras and swimwear so I won't have to buy new during the immediate transitional period. Surgery is just a week away, so I will have to buy more soon and also take a trip to Goodwill to buy pants and tops. I think can get by with my winter sweaters and coats. Best NSV of all, I went out to lunch last weekend and sat in a booth, with room to spare between my belly and the table. That hasn't happened in years. -
My program allows coffee, up to 2 cups per day. Even though I'm a coffee addict I didn't want it the first 2 weeks post op.

Only 9 pounds almost 4 weeks post op
catwoman7 replied to GiGi 1970's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
how far out are you? Those amounts are low, but not crazy low. If you're early out (like within the first couple of weeks post-surgery), focus more on the fluids since being dehydrated can land you back in the hospital. I was able to meet my protein requirements right away, but it can take a month or so for some people to reach them. Never mind - I just noticed the title of your post - almost four weeks out. Just keep working at it. It does take some people longer to get their protein intake up. And like I said above, yours isn't crazy low. having the first stall within the first month is SUPER common, so you may just be in a stall if you're not losing weight. Are you following your program to a "T"? If so, the stall will eventually break and you'll be on your way again... also, I don't know what your starting BMI/weight is, but if it's on the low side (for a WLS patient), you're not going to lose as quickly as someone who starts out at over 300 lbs... -
mine isn't chronic, but I was experiencing occasional reactive hypoglycemia (RH) when I got to be about two years out (it'd hit me about two hours or so after eating - not all the time, but enough that i knew something was going on and had a complete work-up). My PCP recommended eating something about every three hours - preferably a protein - and if I DID eat a carb, to be sure to pair it with a protein. Seems to have helped - I rarely have that issue anymore. btw - if yours is due to RH, that's not unheard of with bypass (not sure about the mini version of bypass, though...)

I just use the quick oats... 1/3 Cup Quaker Quick Oats 2/3 Cup Fairlife Milk 15g of Powdered Peanut Butter (this is epic) 15g Unflavoured Protein Powder I have had this everyday since about week 4

I'm feeling worried,. I'm not getting all my protein in or water. I'm getting like 50 ounces of water in and 50 to 60 protein in. And not losing weight. I can't walk much I need a new hip and back surgery. I feel like I am failing.. sad for me Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app

So hungry 15 minutes after eating
GiGi 1970 replied to pointlessneedles's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't panic! I'm post op 3 weeks and i have only lost 9 pounds! I'm eating 5 to 6 times a day getting 90% of my protein in. And 90% of my water. I'm on soft foods now and gained a pound! Im also hungry.. I panicked until I have read where other people are in the same boat. I'm up at 2am writing because I went in panic mode. Our bodies are all different and age, how long we carried the weight, medicines and if you didn't eat that much before surgery it may take longer. I got upset because I saw so many people saying that they lost 30 and 40 pounds in a month! 10 pounds is better then what i had been doing. You being hungry too is normal. Try to relax and keep drinking as much as you can. Try thr protein water. I'm sorry we are going through such hardship through this part of our journey. But it will get better. It has to! Keep strong Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Okay. Good to know. I’ve always been a major breakfast eater. I’m just going to have to adjust. My tummy can’t handle caffeine yet. I tried the coffee protein shake and it was the worst day I’ve had yet. I tried it at week 2. 💛💛💛💛

Thank you so much. This was very helpful. I’ll try some tea and see if that helps. I can’t do coffee. I was one of those who had a little coffee with my sugar. I have the coffee flavored protein shakes, but they made me sick. I guess my tummy wasn’t ready for the caffeine yet. It was at week 2. I’ve always been a breakfast person. That’s why this feels so weird. Thank you for the advice on trying something warm. 💛💛💛💛

This is too late to be helpful for you at this point, but in case it helps future folks, my clinic had me start transitioning off caffeine two weeks before the pre-op diet, reasoning that dealing with caffeine withdrawal in addition to the normal pre-op diet issues is just too much! I was allowed coffee again after three months but everyone's program varies wildly. Talk to your surgeon's office and see what's allowed on yours.

Protein Supplements are gross, HELP!
Esi replied to jaznova's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
True, tastes change after surgery. I used Genepro and added it to a bit of Crystal Light. Sweets were gross at first. Bone broth helped. If it makes you feel better for the time being, I couldn’t keep much down for weeks (vomiting), including protein, but I made it through. So if you are in contact with your surgeon, a temporary delay in protein is doable till you make it to soft foods. GL! -
Wow. Been awhile since I posted. I hit one-derland on my birthday a few weeks ago, which felt awesome. I've been having gall bladder issues for a few months but trying some alternative healing methods before taking drastic action. Ive gone from a size 20 to a size 12. Its amazing being able to wear regular sizes - and white! Picking out clothes I like vs. clothes that fit. Body dysmorphia is real - I can tell I'm losing weight but I still feel like I look the same. Just today, I noticed my skin on my stomach and thighs is getting very thin and loose in certain spots. It was sort of a strange sight but I didn't love it or hate it. Mostly curious about it. My partner has been super supportive of the surgery and lifestyle changes but while we were hanging out, I surprised him and showed him my loose granny skin. The look on his face hit me hard. It was like surprise and disgust. That was tough. No regrets. One day at a time.

November Surgery Buddies!!!
OutdoorsGirl replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sounds like you’re on the same pills as me. I’ve been swallowing them whole. At first I broke the gall bladder pill in half, but after the 4th week, I could swallow it whole. I have to take a lot of pills and hate it. Hopefully some of them will eventually be stopped. I’m with you on the protein shakes. I’m going to bag most of mine up soon and donate them. I think I can get my protein in with food. I’m on week 6 now. The protein soups are acceptable, but now I really hate the shakes. -
From Lewis: Now at 3 weeks post VSG/SADI and still have severe stomach tightness after every intake of liquids and purees and softs even tiny amounts! Consequently my overall intake stinks and I'm weak every day Anybody having similar issues? Should I just wait this out?

This surgery is bullshit...
Trixia_Marie replied to goodmanje's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The way that things were explained to me was that this surgery is a tool. Not a magic cure. You still need to put in the work. You still need to change your eating habits and activity levels. Especially with gastric sleeve surgery. You cannot be stagnant and expect the weight to just melt off. Your body does eventually adjust to the drastic changes. I went into this surgery knowing that I would be saying goodbye to sugars, sweets, fried foods and most carbs, etc. I went into this surgery knowing that I would need to get off my behind and be more active, joining a gym and now looking into a kick-boxing class. But my main goal of this surgery was to put my T2 diabetes into remission and I can honestly say that I have been off my meds for 6 weeks now and my sugar levels are beautifully controlled. So, I for one disagree with your sentiment that this surgery is bull****. I hope you find a plan that works for you and your goals. -
Thank you so much for this. I have been interlocking from the beginning. I have really small locs. Over 300. Plus I used to hike and garden so I had to wash my hair a lot and twisting was pointless. Lol!!!! I now interlock every 4-6 months. I had my hair interlocked a week before surgery so would not have to do any major manipulating and pulling for several months after surgery. I have heard a lot if VSG patients say they didn’t lose any hair because they don’t deal with the malabsorption like we RYN patients do. I don’t know if that is the reason or not. I try not to touch it at all unless I’m moisturizing my scalp or washing it. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RESPONDING. 💛💛💛💛

Protein Supplements are gross, HELP!
catwoman7 replied to jaznova's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I didn't like the milky flavors the first few weeks after surgery, either (eventually I got to the point I could drink them again, though) . During those early weeks, I had the chicken broth-flavored Unjury one that someone above mentioned, and some of the fruit-flavored powders by Syntrax. -
Protein Supplements are gross, HELP!
Sunnyway replied to jaznova's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
There are many brands of protein shakes and powders and each of them offer many flavors. Just do a google search to see what is out there. The prices varies from reasonable to ridiculously expensive, so shop around. Many can be found at Walmart or ordered online from the manufacturers or Amazon. My clinic recommends these brands (but I've tried many others): Premier Protein Ensure Max Equate High Performance Atkins Plus Musle Milke Genuine, Muscle Milk Light Boost Max Fair Life Core Power There are even high protein soup powders from ProtiDiet and Bariatric Advantage, and others. The variety is vast. Some you will like, some you won't. If you don't like something today, try it again in a week. You can also make your own high protein shakes. There are lots of recipes online, using unflavored whey protein powder mixed with milk or water, like GenePro I prefer plant-based unflavored powder, Like Orgain or Pure Protein. You can add protein powder to just about any liquid, even your coffee or tea or bullion. -
I'm having the same problem. I can't seem to lose the last 10. I just joined the gym hoping that will help and I'm thinking of going back on the protein shakes to see if that will help. Has anyone gone back to the 2 week pre-surgery diet to help lose some weight and keep it off for the last few pounds?? Any advice will help. TIA..

Scheduled for Jan 12th and getting cold feet. Is VSG "worth it"?
OutdoorsGirl replied to JennyO526's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m at 6 weeks now and would definitely do a cruise. You’ll be able to eat yogurt, oatmeal, ham and eggs for breakfast. The lunch and dinner buffet and menus will have lots of options for protein and vegetables…especially fish. You’ll be full after a small portion. I haven’t been eating salads because I don’t feel ready for raw vegetables and hard fruits like apples. I would skip dessert, bread, and alcohol. You could bring some protein powder in case you’re low on protein with the small portions. With the pre diet and surgery, you would probably be down 25 pounds by your cruise. -
Oh my goodness I was looking at those the other day. Today is week 3 for me. I get the outshine no sugar added fruit pops. I only eat one every 2-3 days. They are satisfying. If you like the fudge taste. You can make some Sugar Free Chocolate Jello pudding. I use Protein reduced fat lactaid instead of regular fat free milk. I add some unflavored Bariatric Fusion protein power to it. I do this with the sugar free cheesecake pudding. You can do it with chocolate instead. Hope this helps. 💛💛💛💛
