    Yogurt

I have the same question...except it seems no matter what brand I try, I can not tolerate Greek yogurt. The only exception is if it's mixed in with stuff like in a dip. I'm in the pre-op diet stage and low fat yogurt is on the acceptable foods list. The trouble is, I can't seem to figure out what kind to get since so many low fat yogurts are surprisingly high in sugar. Any help is appreciated!

    Yogurt

I eat a lot of yogurt too and if I have one that is too sweet I add a scoop of plain unflavored protein powder to it. Cuts the sweetness and ups the protein too.

Port and Chest Pain (2 days post)

advice from a nurse, if your tongue is white, eat some yogurt that has live cultures of lactobacillus acidophilus in it, most do, this is the happy bacteria that normally live in your body to fight yeast. your balance of yeast to happy bacteria is probably off, yogurt will restore some of it!
  4. Hi All, I just got back from Disneyland where I walked what felt like 40 miles a day. And I have lost nothing??? I assume that I didn't lose any weight because I did tend to eat higher fat foods(not much else available at Disneyland) but not in large quantities. Is this all part of the course? Why would I be able to eat a small bowl of frozen yogurt without a problem one day and then a couple days later take a couple bites and not be able to eat any more?? At three and a half weeks, is this still an adjustment phase or is this normal? The other thing that was strange while I was on vacation was that now that I am eating more soft solids, I find I am having a hard time figuring what it is I can eat easily. It seems to change daily. I've read that mornings are often when most are a little tighter but what I find is that the first couple of bites need to be slow or I get that tight feeling and I either can't eat anymore or have to drink something and let those first couple of bites pass before I can eat anymore, no matter what time it is. One afternoon I was starving and decided I would just eat a couple bites of my daughters hot dog instead of buying something I wouldn't be able to eat all of and found out what PB-ing is all about. Wow, how uncomfortably strange. I wasn't sick to my stomach, my stomach just said Nope aint gonna keep that in here and up it came. I ate it on an empty stomach and just assumed there would be room for it and it would be OK - WRONG. I have to admit there were times I wished I could just eat what I wanted when I wanted but the band reminded me constantly of why it was there. Don't get me wrong, I am still loving my band. It helped me to say NO when I really wanted to say yes several times in Disneyland. The hotdog incident was quite an eye opener. I really don't want to go there again. It was a little disappointing not to have lost anymore weight but I lost so much the first week I guess it's too much to ask for to lose a whole lot more this first month. Sorry to ramble on....I must have missed you guys and your words of wisdom!!

    Need support

Hi Melanie, You are doing great and you need to stop beating yourself up. THe beauty of the band is that it is adjustable and there is no window of opportunity to lose the weight. You need a band adjustment. The general rule is that if you are not losing for 3 weeks or more at least 1-2 pounds a week and you are following the bandster rules you should get a fill. If you are not working the band and eating high caloric soft food instead of solid Protein, you need to work on this . Let me make some suggestions though because I know what it is like to have a busy life that involves full time work and kids. I found that when I sat down and ate dinner with my family that I would get stressed out and I had trouble with meat cause I couldnt concentrate on chewing because of the distractions of a 3 year old and 9 year old demanding my attention. So now, when I make dinner, I let my kids eat first, tend to their needs and then attempt to eat my food last. This way I can take my time, concentrate and chew my food thoroughly. Also, it sounds like you are eating lunch on the run. This is not a good thing because you will gravitate to softer foods that have lots of calories when you are in a hurry. Prepare your lunches in advance. Bring things that you can nibble on during the day like hard boiled eggs, tuna, pieces of chicken breast, string cheese, yogurt, ham or turkey rollups, turkey chili from the can. Regarding exercise, it is imperative that you find 1/2 hour a day to do something to improve your cardio health and develop muscle. Walk around the neighborhood, take a jazzercise class a couple times a week or invest in an elliptical trainer. The exercise should become a habit because this will be your saving grace when you have days where you make less intelligent food choices. Kids, jobs and other responsibilities are just excuses not to exercise. If there is a will, there is a way. I did exercise for the last 20 months and for the last month or so, I have been very slack with exercise and I feel more tired and run down as a result. You will have more energy, less sagging skin and a little more leeway occasionally to have a cookie or special treat. You can do this. Up your protein, drink lots of Water and exercise if you want a quicker result. And get a fill if you really need one. Babs in TX 334/180 -154 New goal: 170

liquid stage - how long does it go on for man??!!

You have solid liquids for 4 weeks? geesh. I am almost one week post band. I have Clear Liquids for one week (hard as heck to do and I am soooo wanting something of substance) , creamy/yogurts/protein shakes for week 2, mushies week 3/4 and solids by week 5. And of course, lots of water/gatorade during it all. But alas, I must stick with the old lap band addage of "follow your doctors orders!". Don't worry girl, my first week is flying by.... I hope yours gets quicker too!
  7. Hi Bright, Dont compare yourself to others. It is harder when you start at a higher BMI. I hear of bandsters that are able to eat 1500-2000 calories a day and still lose 1-2 pounds a week. THat is not me. I dont lose if I eat more than about 1200. It also matters what I eat. If I stay away from the carbs and focus on Protein, I lose quicker. I have hyperinsulinemia and when I look at a carb, I gain weight Also,I am aware that in Ireland, you have limited access to low carb substitutes and Snacks with reduced fat or calories. I had the same problem when I lived in the Netherlands. If I wanted specialty products (which are mostly made in the US or England) I had to pay premium dollar for them. Its really easier (in my opinion) to lose weight in the US where so many options are available for us chocolate junkies such as low carb chocolate bars sweetened with Splenda or other sugar substitutes. We even have low carb chips, low carb Pasta, sauces and other goodies that make the evil word "dieting" easier. (you wouldnt be able to tell though by the large numbers of obese in the us though!) It does seem like you could use more fill. But I will preface that by saying that sometimes more fill doesnt help you to lose the pounds unless you also do a mental adjustment. Today, I am sitting here eating 1/2 can of bumblebee tuna with lemon and some mulitgrain crackers. Total Calories: 210 Breakfast was a low carb yogurt smoothie with 13 grams of protein and 100 calories. SO today, I am back to basics. Sure, I could eat the whole can of tuna if I wanted to, and yeah what I really want is tortilla chips with cheese, but lately the tortillas are stalling my weight loss. Get some more fill, stick to a bandster portion and waterload!!!! You can do it. Some of us have easier journeys than others. I have always had to work hard at it and if I slack up, I lose my momentum and I am prone to gain if I deviate from good bandster habits. Babs in TX

    Facing up to the situation

I'm glad I read this thread. Thanks to PMS I've had way too much restriction the last couple of days, and even liquid yogurt was getting stuck in my band. I've been happy with my recent weight loss and feeling of fullness, but this reflux has got to stop. If I still feel like this after my monthly buddy passes through town, I'll get a slight unfill.
  9. Tried to eat some Breakfast this morning - and I know this doesn't sound very breakfasty, but I've been so light on Protein - it was 3 oz of cooked chicken breast pureed with yogurt. I took a teaspoonful and it just wouldn't go down. I had real discomfort as I swallowed, further up my oesophagus. I stopped eating immediately, waited a while and took some Water. I made the puree even more liquid with more yoghurt and took it with me for lunch. I did manage to eat it, but it wasn't as easy as it has been in the past. Tonight I made some pureed of salmon and brocolli. I managed to eat it but again, it's quite uncomfortable. I suppose I want to know why this would have come on so suddenly when I've been eating easily for the last week. This is my first week of mushy following 2 weeks of liquids. Needless to say, I'm worried something is going wrong.
  10. Hi everyone haven't posted in a while, I went and had my second fill because I thought I was eating more. Something was trying to tell me I shouldn't get this fill. I went in Monday the 10th got poked 5 times Dr. couldn't find the right spot. So I had to go back in on Wednesday to have it done with floro, well on my way I got stuck in traffic for a hour. There was a bad accident one of the figure skaters in town for the competion was in a roll over and her mother was killed. It was awful. Well the doctor was still able to do my fill. It went well I even got pictures. I drank 2 small cups of water before I left, seemed to be ok. The Dr. said take it easy on liquids for the day so I did. The next morning tried to drink coffee had some trouble but not to bad. Then I had a couple bites of a yogurt and a piece of protien bar and that wasn't to bad. One of the girls in the office brought in some crispy bacon from our snack bar. So I had 2 small slices. Oh my god thought I was going to die. I pb'd about 4 times then it was better. Didn't eat anything else for the day, couldn't even drink without the golf ball feeling. Today is the same I have pb'd about 6 times and I can get very little down. Any suggestions on what to do? I can't get back in until Monday. I am fine as long as I don't eat or drink. Any advise ????

    GNC Gold Standard Whey

I drank it with non-fat milk when I was on my pre-op liquid diet and for the first week post-op. When I graduated to mushies, I mixed it into my oatmeal, greek yogurt, and sugar-free pudding. After my first month post-op I stopped using it because I was getting enough protein from food.

    I really need your help!!!

Hi Everyone, My morning report: I am back to 184, so dropped 1.5 pounds. My goal is to get back to 180 by the end of the week. I am trying to get in at least 40 oz of Water and decaf coffee this morning followed up by a 10 oz Carb COuntdown yogurt smoothie. They are great cause they have 13 grams of Protein and 100 calories. Plus yogurt is supposed to help in weight loss. I am headed to the gym this afternoon. I think the Protein shakes help (not to fill me up tho) because I am aiming for at least 80 grams of protein a day. I seem to lose faster when I do this. So who else needs to report here today? I really need your help!!!

Hi Everyone, Drumroll: I am now back to 182.5. I am hoping by the weekend that I can get back to 180. Will do a jazzercize class tonight and try to be good. Got my Water bottle sitting on my desk and a carb countdown yogurt and a cup of coffee. Lets see where we are tomorrow... Babs in TX
  14. I got my band on 2/28, and experienced those horrible first two weeks, then after I felt better, I had very little appetite. I thought, this is great, look how little I am eating. I have lost 27 lbs. (including weight lost on the one week liquid diet). I know that is outstanding and I am thrilled. My problem is that I am now hungry. I'm on soft foods and I think I'm eating way too much. This is what I've eaten today: Breakfast: one egg, a slice of chopped up kielbasa (polish sausage) Snack: yogurt Lunch: The insides of a subway tuna wrap (with lettuce, tomato, pepper) I also had two cups of coffee before Breakfast, and some Water in between! I chew everything well, I've experienced no problems, no PB's (thankfully!!!). I'm scheduled for my first fill on 4/19. I can't imagine what's going on inside me. I think I must have no restriction at all. I'm worrying that I'm somehow going to screw this up. I mean, can I "blow up" my stomach?? Please help me! Thanks Mayra

    Is this right? Seems strange.......

Laura It is normal to be very hungry just a week or 2 out of surgery. Keep feeding your hunger with Protein shakes, fat free pudding/jell0, fat free yogurt. The mushy stage is hard. I didn't like the consistency of the mushy food so I kept eating yogurt and egg salad. If you want to lose a good chunk of weight, hold off on solids as long as you can. I think most dr's say atleast 4 weeks until solid. Plus that will help you heal faster. Drink lots of Water too. Good luck and try to fight off the hunger. Take a walk or something.
  16. I went to the doctor!!! He wasn't there...no problem...so the nurse took some fluid out. I was at 2.2 and asked to be brought down to 1.9. It was like magic. I can now drink fluids!!!! Whew! it feels soooooo good because I was soooo thirsty. Eating is still questionable. I can eat yogurt with no problem and potted meat (Deviled Ham), but other things still want to come up. I can also sleep!!!! I am just so happy to be able to drink and sleep I haven't gotten to the point where I care about eating yet. I did lose 14 lbs. during those two weeks of misery, but I am sure that a lot was water weight. I am really hoping that this is the magic number for me and that I can stay with this for a while with good results. Thank you for your advice I certainly appreciate it!!!

    Hunger pangs

Be very very careful with the MENTAL hunger! That was my nemisis. I felt as if I "should" be eating rather than "needing" to eat. I am just now (and will struggle much more) with the new concept of eating to live rather than living to eat. You are only 5 days post op. Please stay strong! I am not going to lie and say that the next few weeks gets any easier either. I am 2 weeks post op and want food SOOOO badly! Try drinking more Water and more water! I know that one food in my 2nd week that has SAVED me was the Yoplait Whips yogurt. Very light and fluffy yet very satisfying! Stay strong!!

    How much is enough

I am 4 weeks post op today and one of those little sugar free puddings is too much. I can't eat an entire yogurt either. I did eat an entire pudding one time and felt like crap afterwards, so I didn't do that again. When I try something new I always go slow and steady and watch my portion. My eyes are always bigger than my stomach...
  19. I was lactose intolerant for about 4 months postop. My surgeon said it's pretty common. I Used lactaid during that time. I was, however, able to eat cheese and Greek yogurt, but they contain much less lactose than milk. (And Regular yogurt has more lactose than Greek yogurt) I also couldn't tolerate artificial sweeteners or plain water, but that passed after about 4 months, too.
  20. I have never had a problem with milk before. Wasn't something I drank straight but never had any issues. I am two weeks out and am on full liquids. Tried making my Protein shakes with both FF milk and almond milk. Both don't seem to agree with me. I also cant seem to tolerate pudding or yogurt. I am hoping this is just temporary. Any one else have this issue?
  21. Last night I made these up. I had one for a snack earlier today, and it was delicious. This is a great way to get some Protein in, especially if you have a hard time tolerating shakes. I'm going to experiment a little with the recipe and change up the flavor of Protein powder and yogurt to see what other flavor combinations work well together. Dannon Light and Fit yogurt would knock about 8 calories off per pop, too. I was just out of that brand when I made these. Double Chocolate/Black Cherry Protein Pops In a blender, combine the following -2 scoops of chocolate protein powder (I used what I had on hand, the Walgreens brand) -1 6oz container of Greek yogurt with fruit (I used Great Value's Greek yogurt with black cherry) -8 oz of unsweetened vanilla almond milk After blending, pour into popsicle molds. Freeze and enjoy. This recipe filled five molds for me. Here is the nutritional information for each pop: Calories 94 Carbs 8 Fat 1 Protein 13.4 Sodium 83 Sugar 5
  22. Hi I am 11 days out and although I am not a food addict I do understand how you feel. I read some articles on head hunger and that helped, I really wasn't that hungry but the clear liquid stage was really really hard. I am at my mom's house and she has all my favorite foods in the fig and cabinets, but the kicker is all the food commercials they really drive me crazy. I could not wait for full liquids because you can eat Soup and yogurt. Hang in there it gets better remember what you did this for, drinking something usually gets rit of that hunger feeling. good luck

    Anyone been this sick?

Hello so sorry you feeling this way. I had gastric bypass in Decemeber 2015. A month later had a bowel obstruction and been dilated 3 times and may require a major 3rd Surgury. I also have a picc line and been on it since July 7, 2016. I get TPN every evening after work for 12 hours. I haven't been able to keep food down and I vomit a lot. I do have few days I am ok but it's not easy. My advice to you is to please chew chew chew your food and early slowly. You will get better. Don't give up. I been hospitalize 6 times since December and it's been stressful but being positive will help you. It's normal for you to regret the Surgury because I also felt the same way but trust me you did the right thing. This is temporary. You will get better. Try to avoid meats and corn and high fiber food , salads for now. Stay on soft foods, protein shakes, oatmeal, yogurt, carnation instant breakfast, chicken , cooked vegetables, soups. This is what I was told by the nutritionist. You Amy want to see one also. If you need any other suggestions or have questions, please feel free to ask.
