Struggling with eating and water intake
Angelica Pena posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey everyone! So I am 1 week and 2 days post-op, time feels so slow and it feels like I had the surgery forever ago! This week I am in my full liquids stage and I've been having a hard time ingesting cream soups, broths, and cream of wheat. I don't eat much and let most of what I pick up with the spoon fall off and I just eat/sip what's leftover on the spoon. My stomach hurts fast and I get pains in my chest and lots of gas while trying to eat. Is this normal? It has been so hard for me to take in my 50-64 fl oz because of the same reason. Please give me advice and tell me im not crazy! -
Hi Angelina - congratulations on your surgery! Many bariatric veterans recommend not weighing for at least 3 weeks after surgery (due to the fluid retention). I know it’s hard to refrain from weighing, but put it out of your mind for now. You’ll be satisfied in the long run!

November Surgery Buddies!!!

Hi everyone, it's now just over a month since my surgery and I am feeling pretty much back to normal. I'm having some trouble slowing down my eating - I tend eat the first three-quarters of a meal really quickly and then kind of remember I'm not supposed to and slow right down. I'm still having a bit of a problem with getting enough fluids - I really need to prioritise that more. What tends to happen is I get hungry (and sadly I do get properly hungry several times a day) and start eating immediately, when what I should really do is drink a glass of water first to make sure I'm up to date with fluids. Repeat this 3 or 4 times a day and there are several hours when I can't or don't want to drink anything because I'm full. Otherwise it's full steam ahead. After a long stall post-op I have now lost 7lbs since I came home exactly 4 weeks ago. I'm hoping to see a bit more next month - averaging 600-700 calories a day, definitely no more and sometimes a bit less. How is everyone else getting along now? -
learning to let go of old eating habits
lizonaplane replied to butterflywhisper's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am three months out and I enjoy small "treats" occasionally. I will eat a tiny (about 1.5 oz) piece of cake on a holiday, but not a huge piece and not every day. My birthday was on Thanksgiving this year so we celebrated it the day before. I had about 1.5 oz of chocolate mousse cake on the celebration day, and then the next day was Thanksgiving so I had about 1.5 oz of a different cake (my mom keeps the local French bakery in business between her cake orders and croissants and baguette - she is not obese, just overweight). The next night we had a ton of leftovers plus a cake someone had brought and I decided two nights of dessert in a week was enough. I didn't want to start eating dessert again every day. I also will eat a cracker or some cream of wheat if my stomach is upset, which happens a lot. AND... I drink diet soda! My surgeon said after 4 weeks we could have carbonation, so I drink it again. But very slowly, not like 6 cans a day like before! I eat at restaurants most of the time because I travel for work. I try to make the best choices I can, but I know it's not perfect. Still, I'm not going to quit my job that I love; I'm just going to learn to make the best choices I can. I'm not aiming for perfect. -
According to my scale which I weigh myself weekly just before my shower I’ve lost 22lbs since my surgery. Yesterday I went for my 6 week post op visit. Keep in mind your fully dressed for weigh in and according to my doctor he doesn’t deduct clothing. With that said I weighed in at 175lbs which I was a bit upset. According to the doctor my weight at surgery was 189lbs and now my weight at 6 week post op now 175lbs is only giving a 14lb weight loss. Then I asked the doctor if weighing myself weekly just before I shower, is this more acute than being weighed at a late afternoon appointment, fully clothed, eating stage 4 diet requirements and drinking water. My doctor said my weight at home is likely acute providing what type of scale I’m using. I’m using a Fit Aria. This is a very good scale.

Went for preop appointment…still didn’t see MD.
NovaLuna replied to mrsjo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeons office doesn't see patients until the day of surgery unless they request a face to face appointment with them on the one or two days a month that they're in the office (the practice has four surgeons. Fridays there's one in office, but it never seems to be the same one week to week). It sounds like your surgeon's office is probably the same. You can either delay your surgery and make an appointment to meet the surgeon face to face or just keep your appointment for the surgery because you'll meet them before they put you under (or at least that was my experience) and you get to ask any questions or voice concerns beforehand then. But... if you don't like the answers they give you or their bedside manner, you can always leave. They can't force you to stay and have the surgery if you don't want to. However, if you're more comfortable delaying your surgery to meet the surgeon beforehand then do so and voice that to the front office staff. Stress that you're delaying your surgery because you want to speak with the surgeon face to face and then schedule your surgery after they can get you an appointment with her if that will make you more comfortable with things. -
I think 20 lbs in 3 weeks is fantastic! I was not anywhere close to that and the surgery team thinks I'm doing great at 3 months/35 lbs down. You didn't gain the weight overnight and you won't lose it overnight

Nausea, need suggestions.
lizonaplane replied to lindseylovesdogs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. I'm suffering from intermittent nausea in the last few weeks, but nothing like what you're dealing with. For me, if I eat a cracker or some cream of wheat, it helps a bit, as does diet soda, slightly flat. I had surgery the day before you. Good luck! -
Hey There! Any December 2021 Surgery Friends?
WildWill replied to armartin98's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
AIM, at about 2 weeks post op, I consulted with my team (Surgeon, PA, + NUT) and I started mashed foods and pureed meat added to that mashed food. I've been on that same regiment for the last two weeks and will continue to do so (I agreed) for the next month. Talk to your NUT about adding in avocado, soft meats - not much more in quantity but spaced out (ie, not 3 square meals). -

You're definitely not alone! I'm 2 weeks post-op too. I'm having a hard time with the protein and getting enough as well. And I'm eternally running out of energy. I used to do 10k steps a day at work + all the physical duties. And here I can barely go a few minutes of doing something and I have to sit down for a while and catch my breath. I'm looking forward to when I can add in meat etc - I'm hoping it'll help with my protein intake and my strength. -

WOW! Good Job!! 18lbs!!! I hope you have the same luck this time. . and so smart of you to do that. I, on the other hand, have not been as disciplined. I've been focusing on cutting out the caffeine and this week, cutting out the sugar. -

I start today! I get two protein shakes plus one carb-free meal per day. I actually did a trial run of it last month, and it got really easy after the first couple of days. Plus I lost 18 lbs over three weeks. You got this! -
Joining Weight Watchers after Gastric Sleeve surgery.

Hey, OP here. Congrats to everyone. I lost the majority of my weight while on WW. I rejoined again 1 week before Covid hit( March 2020). I was so stressed and depressed that I put on 10lbs. I've lost it since and even more. I started at 290, I'm now 185. I haven't reached " goal weight" since my sugery, but I'm ok with it. I'd like to lose 20 more, and I hope I do. I'm not obsessed with it. WW makes me too obsessed, counting points, worried about my next meal. Now I try to practice intuitive eating. -

December 7th for me! And a hiatal hernia repair . I was under the impression the hernia repair would be the easiest part of recovery, but it’s actually been the most uncomfortable. The sleeve itself was not nearly as scary or hard to recover from as I thought it would be. The first week has been hard but it’s gets so much easier each day!! -
What do non-cooks eat in the 4th month?
Crystal CW replied to Amy Braun's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. I’m 9 weeks post op and I think I need to stop trying to incorporate different foods and stick to the more simple suggestions that are here. At Whole Foods, I’ve found a brand called Tribal Foods and the have lots of flavorful protein/meat options, like Thai Chicken Patties, Asian meatballs and Chipotle chicken Patties. Just that and a little veg should be enough. -

A new NSV for me at 9 weeks post-op is getting out of the tub is much easier and I can push myself up with arm strength alone. -
backstory: I was sleeved 9/14, left hospital with midline because i couldn't handle fluids. midline was taken out week 2, then week 3 i ended up in the hospital for a week with severe dehydration, was sent home on a picc line. picc line was taken out around week 8 because i was finally able to handle 40-50oz of gatorade zero/vitamin water (cant handle regular water) and 2 protein shakes, and then eventually i could handle about 1oz of soft/puree food. this was until about a week ago when the nausea came back, currently taking 12mg of zofran a day because of it (not all at once). it's been getting worse since last week and now im basically back on clear liquids and even that is giving me ridiculous nausea. I'm also on 80mg of pantoprazole. I talk to the PA and dietician on alternating weeks over zoom. I am going in person this week. I might also go get a second opinion. No imaging or tests have been done to rule out any causes. They basically have given me no answers as to why this is happening. does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to why this is happening or what to do? has anyone gone through anything similar? i feel so helpless at this point. I don't know what to do.

Only 9 pounds almost 4 weeks post op
Misnomer replied to GiGi 1970's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I’m having the same worry! Monday will be 4 weeks for me (RNY on 11/22), and right now I’ve only lost 11 pounds since surgery. I have no problem getting enough protein — 60-90g, right from the start — but I do struggle to drink more than 40-50oz of water each day, and I’m definitely not walking as much as I should. I know my weight loss will be less dramatic than someone who had a higher starting BMI, but I wonder if I’m on track. I just transitioned from liquids to soft foods at the start of the week, and I find myself worrying (a tiny bit) about the “extra” calories…crazy, right?! -

Although at first things are very restrictive, they become more loose after a few weeks. Like others said, I will have thin crust pizza once every couple weeks, equivalent of one slice. I also steal 3-4 of my children’s french fries on weekends, and am satisfied. However, I haven’t eaten anything with added sugar since the sleeve. Not even a bite. The occasional sugar-free chocolate, as well as protein bars, more than satisfies me. I think it really is dependent on the person, but this works for me. -
most people lose 15-25 lbs the first month. Of course you'll always find a few who lose more or less than that, but they're outliers. So you're perfectly normal. if you're basing your loss on that show "My 600 lb Life", then you need to adjust your expectations. Those people start out MUCH heavier than your average WLS patient, so OF COURSE they're going to lose a lot faster. Your loss is completely normal. In fact, it's even a little on the high side. P.S. I lost 16 lbs the first month (so probably around 12 lbs or so in the first three weeks - but I have only my monthly weigh-ins recorded from that far back), and I started out MUCH heavier than you. You are fine. Quit worrying. If you're following your program and your overall trend is down, you're golden!

Yeah a home health nurse comes once a week to take blood for lab tests and change my bandage on my central line. -
Nothing only about 20lb in three weeks. How much were you expecting to lose by this time?
-
Again, always good to give the team a call to be sure! But yeah. Week 2, and my protein shakes had no way of going down. Had to get sugarfree powder instead etc.

So i had surgery about 23 days ago, and as of Monday of last week, I was able to start my soft food diet. Everything was going extremely well and nothing hurt my stomach or didn’t agree with me. Up until maybe 3-4 days ago, every single thing I take a bite of or eat, I get extremely disgusted and repulsed by it. It could be foods that I have eaten in the past week that agreed with me and i loved, or even new foods. I take about 1-2 bites and I cannot continue because of how grossed out I get. I still make sure to drink my water, my protein shakes and take my vitamins but it does make it a lot more challenging to hit my daily protein goal. Is this something that would be considered normal at this stage? Has anybody else experienced this and have any advice on what to do?

"Only" 20 pounds in three weeks?! I think that's a fantastic amount, especially considering that your body has gone through a big trauma and is still healing. I know it's hard not to compare yourself to others, but progress varies so much, since it's affected by your initial weight, how much you lost before surgery, how damaged your metabolism is from previous dieting, your genetics, and like a million other factors. Keep sticking to your plan and be proud of the success you've had so far!
