  1. I had my surgery May 11 and was doing great with every food I tried. 2 weeks ago my pouch decided differently now. I also started throwing up, I don't know if it is that 1 bite to many or too dry of food, I do know I chew enough because I silently count to 30-40 with every bite. So anyway this week I've been drinking the shakes again and homemade soups. Oh yeah with the shakes I can only stomach the pre-made ones, the smell of the others makes me gag. My surgeon and dietitian said the first year is all a learning process. After throwing up my poor pouch gets angry and it hurts a bit, almost kinda crampy. But I'm not really concerned and spoke to my professionals today on the phone. I hope this helps you a bit.
  2. 6:30am on Tuesday I will be at the hospital waiting for surgery.... getting very very nervous now.... But I made my grocery list today for the first 2 weeks. 1 week of clear liquids. 1 week of full liquids. The grocery list was very short!

    Ideas On Stage 2 Foods

Cream of wheat has been a staple on my 3 weeks of Stage 2. I also make my own concotions and puree it really well. Although it looks bad it tastes so good. I made a pot of green Beans with smoked turkey and pureed with chicken broth. Also sweet potatoes and mashed potatoes but don't eat them thick make sure they are soupy. U can use cinnamon and splenda brown sugar. I'm allowed to use I can't Believe It's Not Butter and that has been a lifesaver too.

    Resting ALOT!

I think people underestimate how tired they will feel after the surgery. I know I did and it worried me because I thought I would always feel that way. However, at 4 weeks I felt my energy return if not actually increased from before surgery.

    Preop Diet

My pre-op diet is 2 weeks prior to surgery, 5 Protein Shakes made with Water a day...thats it. I agree with Kristen, I am kinda excited to not think about what to make and plan for meals for the next two weeks. I start on Monday. The shakes are pricey, but I am determined to follow everything the doctors give me! Have a good one!

    Nausea

Zofran ... A dissolvable form that melts in liquid. It's the bomb and it was the first thing to go down every morning for my first 4 weeks.

    Dizzy spells

Might need a little salt too - try broth. I go by the looks of my skin on my hands - if I can pinch it and it isn't supple - I need hydration now. It's a full time job in the early weeks - drink - protein - drink - protein, etc repeat.

Don't worry about the numbers, just do what you are suposed to do and let the #'s take care of themselves!!! (advice I need to take to heart) I was just at the dr and they said everything was fine, they are happy w where I am!

    Which is the best?

That's a hard question to answer as everyone's tastes are so different. I'm only 5 weeks out, but I did the Ensure High Protein shakes, had sampler packages of the unjury Protein powder and the Syntrax Nectars. I do like the Syntrax nectar Fuzzy Navel, especially in the mornings as it reminds me of having orange juice. The Ensure wasn't too bad, but in general, you do get tired of them. In the beginning I was told to get at least 50g of protein a day. I would have 2 Protein Shakes and a cream Soup and just hit 50. Vitamins you should be taking a B12 every day along with a chewable multi. Also I take Calcium citrate, 500mg 3x a day.
  10. I was banded on May 7th and they didn't tell me not to bend. They just said not to lift over 10 lbs for two weeks. I feel good. I am a hairdresser and went back to work on the 6th day after surgery. I had some pain but it was tolerable. They did keep me over night in the hospital right after surgery because I had so much pain so they could give me IV pain meds. I'm 10 days out now and feel good other than that I can't sleep on either side. I am sick of sleeping on my back. haha

    Preop Diet

My 2 week () pre op diet started today and it's awful. Two protein shakes made with water (yuck!) and a sensible meal of 4 oz. chicken, turkey, or fish, with unlimited green vegetables (there is a list....they are all green, lol) It took me 4 hrs. to drink the first shake, it tasted so bad. So I went back to an egg-white omelette and 2 cups of lettuce for lunch, and the "sensible mean " for dinner. My lunch was actually fewer calories than the protein shake, so I figure it was ok. I'm already 2 lbs. below where I must be for the surgery to occur. Big day is Feb. 8th, BTW.
  12. Dehydration can cause joint pain. I would first check with your surgeon to make sure he doesn't have any concerns. I was told to drink one powerade zero daily to help with electrolytes in my daily intake of liquid. I am a month out and still sometimes have the leg cramps but urine is pale so know it isn't dehydration it is just electrolytes. I had no pain post op but there was a small amount of bruising and swelling but that resolved by the end of the first week. Hope you get to feeling better soon
  13. Swelling in the abdomen is normal. I'm a little over 3 weeks post-op and still have some swelling in my abs. I had a tummy tuck three years ago and even though I regained 80 pounds afterward (thus my decision to have VSG), my stomach staid very flat and firm. Since my VSG three weeks ago, it's definitely way "squishier" than it was pre-op. So definitely still some tissue swelling there. As for the dark urine, it's likely due to dehydration. In the early days post-op, it is very hard to get in enough Water and since your body is healing, it requires even more water than usual, so dehydration is common. I'm 24 days post-op now and I still have dark urine when I first go to the bathroom in the morning, after not having drunk anything all night. I'm getting right at the 64 oz. mark for fluids each day now. As for the soreness in your limbs while sleeping, I did not experience that and I am not sure what could be causing it. You may want to contact your surgeon or PCP about that one!

    Post Sleeve Activities

I was driving the day after I left the hospital. However, I didn't touch the narcotic (or even the morphine in the hospital). If the roads are really twisty and windy, perhaps wait two weeks, but otherwise, in the absence of pain, the driving restriction is really overblown. If you are OK going back to work and those demands, in almost all cases you should be OK to ride. I don't drive a motorcycle, but I could easily have ridden a bike three days out as well. FWIW.
  15. I will be starting my 2 week pre-op soon. Ugh! Can anyone suggest a protein fruit drink or protein whey drink mix that actually tastes good, and won't break my pocketbook?
  16. I had bad soreness for about a week in my left arm and shoulder. Apparently gas. My abdomen was swollen and discolored. I was on IVs for 3 days so am sure I gained weight but I have no scales. I am 2 weeks out now and that has all gone away. Just still incision soreness. As for sleeping, I have to sleep on my back which is no fun so I take a pain med at bed time to help me sleep. Hope I'll be able to sleep more comfortably soon.
  17. Hey all! Today marks week 4 post op for me and I am 25 pounds down! YAY! This means I am 1/4 of the way to my goal weight. Super exciting for me. I do have a question tho...I have not started exercising yet for several reasons one of which being I am not sure what I am released to be doing?? Anyone know?? Most likely I am going to start off with power walking but I don't want to do anything to mess with my healing either. Just curious when you all started your exercise routines and what they consist of.

    Premier Protein

My program allows premier protein. Also try to submit your information to insurenutrition.com and see if your insurance will approve the shakes for you. It takes about a week or two to find out. I get 4 cases of 18 a month, although they only have choc, van, and strawberry. Sent from my SM-N920V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Getting In My Daily Calories

My program called for 400 calories per day at that stage. I haven't seen a program that calls for that, any calories so early out. I did three protein shakes per day, then cut down to two when I could eat al little more, then one, then none. Does your program call for that many calories at 7 days? Lynda
  20. 1. Full feels different now. I'm four weeks out from revision and get full very quickly-I'm on soft foods and can usually eat about 1/4 to 1/2 cup to feel full. Don't overeat! It's not like the band where you can eat a few more bites-if you think you are full, STOP! It will all come back up. 2. Did your program give you a food progression program?? I was two weeks full liquids, two weeks puréed, two weeks soft and then ease into "regular" food. I just moved to soft foods earlier this week. 3. You had surgery on the INSIDE of your stomach. There is a food progression to allow the stitches and staple line inside of your stomach to heal. It didn't feel good because your stomach has an open wound. Call your doctors office or go see a dietitian. You can mess up your recovery if you don't follow the rules. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  21. My orientation was a free 1.5hr seminar that the surgeon held, going over A LOT of information about the different types of surgeries available and answering a bunch of questions from us folks there. Before we all left, they scheduled consult appointments for us with the surgeon, where we could discuss our specific needs and type of surgery he would recommend. They also gave us a packet to fill out and mail back to them before the consult appointment, which asked for A LOT of info so that they could get started reaching out to insurance and any doctors etc etc. For me, BCBS of IL on my plan doesn't require a 6mo supervised diet anymore, so from seminar to surgery date it'll be 2 days shy of 3mos. CRAZY fast, but that's also because I was on top of scheduling all of my pre-op doc appointments and tests as soon as I could, so I was seeing a different doc almost every week for awhile lol. Just had my pre-op appt with my primary doc yesterday after work and he gave his clearance for the surgery! Now I just have my pre-op appt with my surgeon next Wednesday, and I'm ready for my surgery next Friday! Good luck and definitely read a bunch of the threads in these forums! I'm a super organized researcher to begin with, but it was super helpful reading everything on here.

From the album: Weight Loss Progression

  23. A nurse from my clinic called today. She said that if I continue doing well,I can start pureed foods on Thursday. Does anyone have any good ideas for me? My guide from the clinic has a sample meal plan and some guidelines, but it also says that I could buy baby food in the jars if I want. YUCK, no thanks! What I've been craving for the last few weeks is protein, especially eggs and chicken. How can I make some purees that will taste good? I know about unsweetened applesauce. I think I'll make my own.

    Back Pain?

Gas bubbles get trapped inside your body and have to work their way out after surgery. I was having severe shoulder pain. It was gas. At week three it got better. This too shall pass. Gas X does seem to help. Also having my hubby chop massage my back helped too. Good luck!

    Help with full liquids

After surgery your body is in a major heal mode. It is common for some individuals to be unable to meet their daily Protein or Fluid requirements for the first few weeks after surgery. Just keep trying every day and you should be able to get there. The fluid requirement is met by a combination of all the fluids you take during a day. It is not only the Water that you drink each day. But also the water you drink when you take your Vitamins and medicine. It is the milk you drink. It is the fluids content of the Protein shakes. It is the water component of the Soups you take. It is met by flavored water such as Crystal Light. It is met by sugar free popsicles. It is met by tea and decaf coffee. It is a combination of all the fluids that you consume during the day. It is common for your taste buds to change after surgery. I remember in the hospital after surgery I could not drink the water because it tasted very chlorinated. Some individuals find temperature (hot or cold) affects their tolerance for drinking fluids. In the winter, I found that I tolerate Hot drinks such as piping hot cocoa. But you have to use the "No Sugar Added" variety. Also fine English teas were very good. More recently I found a drink at Sam's Club that I buy by the case called Bai. There are many different types of formulations on protein shakes. I would recommend that you keep experimenting until you find one that you can tolerate. You don't have to like it, just tolerate it. I used Muscle Milk Light (vanilla Creme) powder blended with water and a half a banana. That worked for me. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, you might try premixed Isopure.
