    Any Washington State Sleevers?

Hi all... kind of an old thread but wanted to check in & say hello. I'm from the Lynnwood/Edmonds area & had my sleeve surgery (revision from lap band) done on Tuesday. I'm only a few days post op but am looking forward to see what the future holds!
  2. I only had 1 day pre op for when I was banded a few years ago and did revision 7/1/15 and had 1 day of clear liquids and both times no issue.
  3. Thanks for this update! I have my sleeve scheduled for 9/14 and had my band removed on 6/29. I've kept saying that I hope the sleeve is as smooth as the removal because I was fine after a week. My original band surgery, five years ago, was really hard and I struggled with a hematoma, severe swelling and incredible pain. I know everyone is different but I've heard so much more positive regarding the revision than I've heard negative so I'm excited.

    Any Regrets?

I would be most curious 5 years out how the other weight loss methods fared. Ship has sailed for me as I did revise to sleeve on 2011 and am happy with it. Like everyone I wish I could have done this without surgery but I couldn't. I don't mind. I developed a heart arrythmia (atrial fibrillation) around 18 months post op. The band surrounds the vagus nerve which controls, among other things, heart rhythm. I ended up in ER with my heart completely out of rhythm, beating at a rate that was close to having me have a stroke, and blood pressure also sky high. It took seven hours to bring everything around using medication, and now I'm on medication for life. I had my band's restriction loosened so as not to touch on the vagus nerve and just went back in last month to get a bit of fill as I'm gaining weight and hungry all the time. Immediately following the small fill, I went back into atrial fibrillation. That's pretty conclusive evidence that there is a correlation, at least with my particular anatomy. If you google gastric band, or lap band + atrial fibrillation, you will see a lot of people who have now experienced this. There are several on this forum right here. So yes, I regret what I did. Living with a-fib is no picnic, and the side effects of the three medicines I now have to take have greatly compromised my quality of life: extreme fatigue, memory loss, inability to do any sports that might raise my heartrate...wish I had chosen a different path. Would a sleeve revision correct the afib?Unfortunately, no. Once you have afib, you have afib. In fact, afib begets afib. In other words, once the electricity in your heart becomes chaotic (which is basically what afib is), it will constantly create new "bad" pathways in your heart. According to my cardiologist, it is unlikely that even removing the band will make the afib disappear, as the band has already done its damage. All I can do is keep it loose and off the vagus nerve, and continue with my meds (or, in the future, ablation or pacemaker if the afib worsens). I would not do another WLS in any case. I'm out of the game. For me, these are "Flowers for Algernon" situations. When I was doing my research, I was convinced WLS was the gold standard for permanent weight loss. Now my thoughts are different, especially concerning the lapband (since I had a bad experience with it) but also with other surgeries. There really is no tinkering with major body parts that is going to come out ok in the longterm, imho. We are seeing wonderful transformations in the short term, yes...but my sense is longterm we are going to see some health-complications from all WLS that have yet to reveal themselves. I would not even consider going under the knife again.
  5. I had my revision on Monday and I feel great! I had the band removed, a hernia repaired and RNY Bypass. I'm already off all pain meds, stopped napping and going for walks outside. I live alone and haven't needed any help, even though I've had lots of offers from friends and family. Don't get me wrong, I do have pain and discomfort--I feel like I did about a million sit ups, and it is hard to get up and off off the couch. The incisions are sometimes stabbing me, and I hate hate hate the drain... But really this is nothing. It's waaaaaaay easier than recovery was when I had the band put in, 6 years ago!

    How did you know?

I saw people who had weight loss surgery and were really successful with it. So since my husband's insurance would pay for it I decided to go for it. I have high blood pressure and very bad osteoarthritis in my knees. Originally I had a lap band done in August 2012. It was good for the first two years but then towards the end of 2014 I started throwing up everything I tried to eat - even ice cream. And I would often throw up liquids too. After that I could never get into the green zone with the fills. We tried from November to April when I finally decided forget this and asked for a revision to the sleeve. I had the lap band removed and the sleeve done on June 1st and I'm much happier with my new choice. I originally chose the lap band because it was less invasive surgery. I didn't want my intestines rerouted or my stomach chopped off. But after the issues I had I decided that losing most of my stomach was a much better option. I didn't want bypass because I have Celiac disease and already have malabsorption problems.
  7. Zackly, i am 5 days post op from lapband revised to bypass. Why bypass? The band is a complete failure for me due to complications and me not listening to the surgical experts. I am 58 had the band at 51 lost, regained, lot health issues, thyroid, kidney stones insulin Resistance. Do not turn a blind eye to the bypass, it is still the gold standard. The sleeve is good if reflux is not in the picture. It was a no brainer for me as reflux was the reason i could not sleep, by pass was the way for me. Yes i had to get around that part where my plumbing was rerouted. I take one small chewable vitamin a day for the rest of my life, i was anyway. And pump up the calcium. I was 236 preop weight 231 5'3" tall. I was concerned about my age, in the end it did not make the difference. My health, my life with my husband, and our dreams together are what has made the difference. Go for it, being free of the things that made you sick was the catalyst for me. I have post op pain yes. I am doing everything the doc saya to do so I plan on being successful. Let is all know your decision.

    2 surgeries?

Sorry typing on tablet. I had bilateral knee replacement that summer. I gain back up to 240lb by the time of my revision last summer. My. Band had caused major problems with my esophagus, so I didn't have to wait to get removed. I am now fluctuating between 195lbs and 200lbs and my goal weight is 170lb. Ideal weight 150lb. Weight loss has been very slow, but I work 2nd shift and don't workout as often as I need to. Good luck

July 21 sleeve date and scared

I was revised from band to sleeve on the 21st and your fear is mine as well. I'm promising myself that if I follow the plan laid out by my surgeon & dietitian, I will successfully lose and keep it off. They know what they're doing!! I'm heading home from hospital later this morning ????

    SLEEVE TO BYPASS REVISION

Heyyyyyy everyone ! I am looking for support! I was just revised from a sleeve to rny on Monday. 7/20/15 . I was sleeved on Feb 17,2014 and lost about 70 pounds. About 6 months in my weight loss basically stopped. After having an upper GI and endoscopy done, I was told that I had a hiatal hernia which caused most of my stomach ( which was sleeved) pushed up in to my chest cavity. The bottom part of my stomach was bloated. The surgeon explained that this was the cause as to why I was not loosing weight as well as having gerd symptoms. So Monday I had my surgery and I am feeling ok definitely in some pain and very tired. But it's nice to be home now to heal. I am looking for anyone who has been revised for support , I feel like our population is not very big In the wls community , or maybe I just haven't found the right place! I know everyone's situation is different but I am curious to know about weight loss after revisions . Thank you all for reading! I am going to stop now as the pain meds are kicking in

    3 days until revision!

I'm scheduled for sleeve to bypass revision on July 29. Tonight I am terrified. I hope I'm doing the right thing. Since my sleeve in 2013 I have been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation sleep apnea and High cholesterol. My lowest weight was 212 pounds but I am back up to 250 pounds. I know healthwise I am making the right decision but I'm just so scared. Being a nurse I think of all the complications that could occur although unlikely. I have great faith in my surgeon but I'm still having second thoughts. Is this normal?
  12. My doctor insisted on a full week off. Surgery was this Tuesday and back to work next Wednesday... I was a revision from lap band to sleeve, so that might make a difference.

    Discouraged - need to vent

I had the Lapband until 6 weeks ago, when I revised to RNY. So I know all about things getting stuck, sliming, throwing up... My husband bought one of the Deli rotisserie chickens when I first started solid food, and I must say that I'm excited about eating this chicken! I eat a lot of chicken breast, which can sometimes be dry, but this rotisserie chicken breast meat is actually creamy in your mouth. You barely have to chew it's so moist. I take all the white meat and hubby takes the dark. Works out perfect, even when slightly re-heated. Try it! BTW, never thought of dipping meat into hummus, what a great idea!
  15. I have had two weightloss surgeries. First gastric bypass. I had complications so the revised me to a sleeve. Now I have a stricture with scar tissue. They did a dilation yesterday and today I threw up just as usual. I haven't been able to eat solids in 7 months. I've lost 120 pounds, am now underweight, and the backs of my legs have started going numb. Vitamins make me throw up like everything else. Has anyone had stricture dialations and had it work for them? I am so scared this is not going to work for me and they are talking about converting me back to bypass. I can't imagine the idea. Nor can I have a stent as I hear they are very painful and I refuse to go back on narcotics as it was so difficult for me to get off of them after spending four months in the hospital on diladid. I feel like I'm losing hope.

    Male Sleevers?

5 lbs. is substantial! Maybe it was just a plateau that you hit and you're out of it! Man, I hope that's what it is/was. I know how frustrating it can be! Let me know how it goes. I see my sleeve doc. next week and will ask him about needing more calories suggestion(s). I want to beleive that it is so, because before I had the lapband removed and revised I was stuck on the same weight with the lapband for 2 years doing the same gym routine. Now sleeved, I've added strenght training along side the cardio hoping to break the cycle, plateau or whatever it is. I do know for sure that my clothing fit much better, so, there is some good news. I was content with that for awhile, but, until the scale shows it, I will continue to stress. jake

Roll call all who had surgery JUNE 2015

Have you tried marinating the chicken in something like fat free Italian dressing or cooking it in some chicken broth? With hamburgers I have to have mine medium instead of well done to be able to eat it. I like pork with fat free honey mustard dressing. We have a Nu Wave oven like you see on TV and it's well worth the money. You can cook your meat from frozen and it stays really juicy. My husband hates turkey but he will eat turkey cooked in the Nu Wave because it's not all dried out. My surgery was June 1st. I'm down 29 lbs since surgery. I haven't had any problems with any foods but I'm a band to sleeve revision and my sleeve is a little larger - he only took out 75%. I have marinated the chicken in multiple marinades, no luck. I have now switched to chicken thighs. I can do loose ground beef, but hamburger patties for some reason hurt. I can only eat 1-1.5 oz of meat anyways. I usually just make my husband dinner and take my meat from his plate lol.
  18. I had that requirement in 2012 but not for my band to sleeve revision in June. My doctor just wrote a letter that I had been doing WW for six months and had done Atkins and several other programs before that without being successful and the insurance accepted that.

    Male Sleevers?

Hey mulepick, I don't have definite input, but, will share what I've been told. See, I'm in the same boat. I was revised from lapband to sleeve May 1, lost 30 lbs. since pre-op diet and am currently stuck at the same weight. The past month(s) I've been down 3 pounds, then, up 3 pounds. My Gym workouts are 45 minutes cardio, burning 800 - 1000 calories, then, 30 minute strenght training. I've met with a nutritionist and also a trainer and they both tell me that I'm not eating enough calories and my body is in starvation mode. I know that I'm repeating myself as I've posted all this before, but, the issue is that I just cannot eat more with sleeve. I'm doing Protein shakes inbetween meals and was really sick of them until recently when I concocted a tasty protein consisting of Walmart vanilla creme Muscle Milk, with 1/4 cup oatmeal, 1 banana or Peanut Butter. I'm trying to drink 2 of these throughout the day, but, they fill me up quickly. Anyhow, let's see if this works. I've asked this question on other sites and the frequent response I get is that I have to find what works for me. It gets frustrating! I want to reach goal one day of 190 lbs, but, I'm not getting there anytime soon, so it seems This probably isn't much help, but, if nothing else, feel at ease that you are not alone. jake

  21. Was it denied specifically because you had your procedure in Mexico? That doesn't seem fair! I am on prilosec, I think my concern is that I developed Barrett's in under 11 months without any history of acid reflux. They think part of it is that I had my gallbladder removed a month after my sleeve and that it led to bad bile reflux too. If you had Barrett's do you think you'd have the bypass (if your insurance wasn't an issue)? I am trying to assess whether the revision is something that I should take very seriously or if I should hold off. Because of my job I'll be back in the States for a couple of months this winter to sort out a visa issue, so I feel like I need to make a plan to prepare for having surgery then if I decide I need to. I'm no Dr and I don't have this issue but if it was me and the damage was this extreme after 11mths. Then I would not hesitate. Cancer doesn't discriminate it kills. Sorry to be so direct but your body is on a collision course and your Dr has given you an option to stop the problem. Your 26 and have your whole life ahead of you. Take care my thoughts are with you. Keep us posted with what you decide

You're too thin! Stop losing now!

Sounds like my mother. She would say you're gaining weight and look bad. Then I was banded and lost 70 lbs and all of a sudden I was too thin and looking sickly. Band was removed due to complications and I regained the weight then again she's making those comments. I finally had to tell her she wasn't happy with how I look either way and she apologized. I can wait to see if she'll do it again once I have my revision and start losing again.
  24. Has anyone had a stricture dilated with success? I have one and had my first dilation today. The doctor said there is a lot of scar tissue in my esophagus causing food to get stuck and vomiting. From what I've read on here, many people have had no success with this procedure and end up with stents or revision surgery. I'm worried. Has anyone been able to eat after this procedure?

    SLEEVE TO BYPASS REVISION

Hey. I'm having my sleeve to bypass revision next Wednesday, July 29. I was sleeved in February 2013. I lost about 40 pounds and kept it off for a year when I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and was started on a beta blocker. I gained 20 pounds the first month and it has just gone up since then. My insurance said only one bariatric surgery per lifetime however I decided to try to have it approved and they approved it within two days. The insurance company considered my failed sleeve a complication as well as my new heart condition and borderline sleep apnea. I thought for sure I would have to appeal the denial but was happily surprised. So if your insurance states one bariatric surgery in a lifetime, try to get it approved anyhow. You may be pleasantly surprised. I have completed all my preop requirements and I started my diet today. Has anybody gone through this and are you glad that you did this? My biggest fear is not the surgery itself but being a failure again. It's so embarrassing. I am telling very few people I'm having RNY. They all think I'm having a hiatal hernia repair. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.
