  1. Good morning to you too!!! It sounds like you are doing an excellent job!! I'm happy to hear that your hospital stay went so well! You sound like when it comes to goal weight... I have a general idea but with the final number I'm just playing it by ear. Keep up the great job! You will be at goal before you know it
  2. Hi everyone! I have been overweight my entire life and have thought about having weight loss surgery many times throughout the years but my insurance didn't cover it. I then found out that United Healthcare started covering WLS again and I decided that it was time to make a major change in my life. Years of weight loss and gain can finally come to an end. I became sleeved on June 22, 2011 in Baton Rouge. I wasn't a good candidate for the Band because of GERD and I felt the bypass was just too much of a risk for me. So I decided on the Sleeve. A lot of research went in to my final decision and I feel I have made the right choice. I began the process back in March of this year and it felt like the never ending journey with all of the appointments, tests, procedures, sometimes 3 or 4 a day, and then finally came the approval. YES! My highest recorded weight was 345 pounds and my weight at the start of my journey was 280 pounds. I began the diet my nutritionist put me on in late April and I was 258 pounds on the day of surgery. I weighed today and I am now at 245 pounds. I have a long way to go but this is a wonderful start and I know I am on a new path to a healthy new me. I am still having pain on my left side though when I move and I am still swollen. I'm not sure if this is common but any feedback would be helpful. The low grade fever and constant restroom business have stopped thankfully and I'm looking forward to brighter days. I'm on a full liquid diet for another week and then a week of soft foods. I don't really know anyone close to me that has had this surgery so I searched the internet for answers to my questions and thankfully I found this site today. I would also like to say thank you to everyone who has posted on a variety of topics. I've spent a lot of time reading and the knowledge I gained today was priceless. I look forward to following all of you on your journeys as I embark on mine. I'm excited to see where my new "sleeved" life takes me.

    stretching your pouch?

Good info....I have not heard about people gaining their wt back...any information out there that anyone wants to share. In our nutrition class they did say that at the two year mark some people gain 10-20 # and that we should make sure it doesn't go above 10#

    Salsa dancing??? LOL

I just took my first Zumba class tonight. It was fun. I'll do it again! You should keep on dancing. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

    1st Fill down!

I had my 1st fill on 1/29 and all went great. I had 2.5 in the band already and had another 2.5 added making the total 5cc. I can definately tell the difference, finally feeling that restriction everyone has been talking about and it takes me a bit longer to get hungry (every 3 hours instead of 2) so we are getting there. I was relieved to see I hadn't gained any weight that week prior, hadn't lost any either but at least no gain. Right now am down 3 more pounds so far this week, but will capture Feb week one results on Saturday. My goal is 10 pounds each month, so I'm off to a decent start so far. Am learning chewing very well and taking my time is key. Funny, no matter how much everyone stresses this, until you have your first "not good" experience you don't really "get it". :iamwithstupid:I have to say, that feeling you get is one of the most uncomfortable feelings I've ever experienced.
  6. I am currently 235bs and my doctor has told me he will not even consider a revision until I get down to 210lbs. My lapband is empty as of now (just had a baby and having problems finding that sweet spot) fill/unfill/fill/unfill. My question is, has anyone else ever had to lose weight before being considered for a revision? THANKS
  7. When you lose weight before the surgery you shrink the fat around your liver. I have met ppl in the surgeons office who went from lab band to sleeve and woke up to find the sleeve was not done because it was not safe to get around the liver. try and lose the weight and get the surgery done safely
  8. I had my RNY on 4/20/16. Until the past 5 days or so I haven't been excessively active. The weight loss slowed way down so I decided it was time to get off my rump, even if that meant I wasn't giving my husband my undecided attention as soon as I got off from work, like he expects. So, tonight I walked about a mile and a half and ran (if that's what one should want to call that) for about 100 yards. I think I may have seen the pearly gates, bright lights, and my calling in my near future as I though I was going to die! I may or may not have felt like a beached whale with no blow hole when I got back to my house. Uuuugh! Why on earth would anyone one ever let themselves get like this!? New-Me May

Hello everyone: I had my surgery on May 9th. I have yet to tell my family. My husband knows, my best friend knows, a lady who had the surgery knows and my one of my cousins knows that I trust not to say anything knows. Other than that I have yet to tell anyone else in my family because when I first mentioned it to my parents they immediately started to criticize and tell me that would be the biggest mistake of my life. I also did not want to have to explain myself. I have lost some weight since the 9th but it has been slow which is fine. I probably won't see my family until the holiday which is far away. I have my ups and downs with my relationship with my stomach and trying to work on my relationship with food. I hope with time the ups will far outnumber my downs. LS LS

    Im not losing. Urghhhh!

I gained in week 1, lost in week 2, and stalled for weeks 3-5, then lost a ton in week 6. We all lose at a different rate. Try not to stress out too much in the first couple of months. You are healing. Follow the plan, get your protein and fluids, and walk. Good luck!

    Worried about never reaching goal.

It is possible & there are quite a lot of us on this forum who have and yes, some don’t for myriad of reasons. I’m 5’3 with a smaller frame & I exceeded my goal. My BMI is about 19 at the moment. But it’s not always about the number on the scale or your BMI. @Recidivist is correct. The ultimate goal should be about being healthy. You need to find the weight you can maintain while being able to live your life happily (balancing diet, exercise, family, relationships, etc.) & healthily. Good luck with your surgery.
  12. Good bye to the 180's, and this time, it is forever! You are not coming back into my life EVER again! I weighed this morning and dropped out of the 180's and into the 170's. I've been here before, and gained back up to the 180's but this time, never again! It felt soooo good to see the 179 this morning, I'm so happy to be back into the 170's. I'm hoping to get back into the 160's soon! Exercise my friends is the key! I'm convinced more than ever. Speaking of exercise, I had a great workout last night. I was sweaten' like a whore in church on Sunday morning! It felt so good to sweat and I felt like I really was buring the calories. Menu today - Bfast - protein shake, made with skim milk, 1 scoop of vanila whey protein powder, 2 strawberries and 1/3 of a banana and some raw oatmeal. YUM. Lunch - going out for lunch today with some friends, so not sure but I like the scale moving down, so you can bet it will be healthy! Dinner - Exercise
  13. I am a high school teacher and am scheduled to be banded on Thurs. May 22nd. I will have off until the next Tuesday and will resume work on Tuesday. I am so nervous that I won't pack the correct liquids to bring to work. What will I be able to consume? I do not get out of school until June 26th. My husband feels that I should change my surgery date for July so I can be home and it would be more convenient, but I will lose a month to lose weight and be on a good schedule. What do you all think who have been banded? Can I still manage my May surgery?

    Pureed foods

I was on pureed for 4 weeks. My doc is a little different I am finding out. Was on liquid for 3 weeks after surgery then the puree for 4 weeks. Just had my fill on Wednesday and back to liquid for 2 days now on pureed for 2 days then I finally get to eat real food on Sunday. I am soooooo excited! Also another thing I was not allowed during pureed was chicken, beef, rice or noodles. So I had to get creative. I did have tilapia, salmon, sole, or blue hake every day. I also had egg beaters every morning. I also did he low fat ricotta and spaghetti sauce, refried Beans, and mashed potatoes. I found a wonderful cottage cheese that saved my life! It is by darigold and it has smashed pineapples already added. Delicious! I also had pickled beets. They are so soft that I jus chewed them really well and they were mushed. I did the same thing with Bush's baked beans. They mush real well with your tongue. I did the vegi version so I didn't have to deal with the hunk of bacon in them. They also have a few less calories. One of my favs was blending califlower after I steamed it with a bit of ff milk and some light butter. Yummy! I also found that if I boiled potatoes a little more than you would for potato salad I could still make potato salad that was easy to mash with my tongue and teeth. I just used potatoes, a hard boiled egg and mashed real well, some goldens brown mustard, and some ff mayo. It was nice to have when I got sick of eating hot food. I know all these things - beans, potatoes, etc have a lot of carbs in them and some have more fat but if you make sure you measure and eat only the serving size and keep track of how many calories you are eating you will still lose weight. I lost about 2 lbs a week while I followed this diet. My doc said usually people gain during the mushies so don't freak if you do. Now that I had my first fill I have notice a huge difference in the last 2 days. I haven't eatten much! I am so happy. I feel great! All total since May 24th when I started my presurgery diet I have lost 44lbs. Most of which I lost after surgery on June 28th. I hope some of these ideas work for you and anyone else out there with mushie worries!
  15. I was told in the kaiser seminar that if you have sleep Apnea and its not being treated that getting you off the breathing machine used during surgery can be complicated. The instructor said that your lungs are so tired they clamp town on the tube and wont release and you have to be in ICU until they can get it out. Additionally it is a condition that can be caused by obesity so its something up there with Blood Pressure, Diabetes etc that can be treated by losing weight.

Really just be happy for me ??

I am sorry to hear that. This is the exact reason I only told family and my best friend. I didnt want people to think that I didnt work just as hard to lose weight as those who didnt have surgery. I hate that it has come to people thinking surgery is the easy weight out. We all know if we really wanted to do nothing we could stay fat with the sleeve, but we all work to lose. Sorry to vent.

New To The Site and Newly Sleeved

Hi Renee, congrats on your new sleeve and your amazing weight loss before surgery too! Discomfort in the left side is common. I’m 10 days out and the only lingering soreness I have is sort of a tugging sensation there when I stand up. Before surgery I remember reading somewhere the left-most incision is where the retractor goes in, so a lot of manipulation in that area. Makes sense that it would take longer to heal. Of course if it’s something really sharp or a new pain, I would call the surgeon. Good luck & keep us posted on your continued progress.

    Re-introducing myself.

Welcome back Bec and welcome Brooke! Congrats on trying to have a little one! I have 3 girls who are nearly grown. They grow up way too fast. Enjoy this time with DH. Soon you'll be preg. I know of another bandster with a similar story and she did get preg after losing the weight. Best wishes to both of you!
  19. What she said! My husband has been through H E double hocky sticks with me with back surgery, three falls, gaining a hundred pounds- all of it. He loves me for me and I adore him - we are soul mates. I do understand why a less solid relationship might be shaky after the surgery but I don;t relly see why you should hold back with someone you think you could have a future with just because of WLS.
  20. Hello. I'm not sleeved yet but I wanted to get an understanding about something. I have someone that I date, not serious yet. It's hard for me to get serious because I've heard that many relationships tend to breakup or get rocky after one loses weight and I want to wait until after surgery to get serious. I know many people can be insecure over one thing or another but I always thought the other partner would think whatever made us happy would flow into the relationship and we would then be happier in the relationship. For me when I lose weight, I will feel sexier, would want to wear the cute "skinny girl" clothes, and cute hills and just be too cute for my own good, not to mention wear cuter intimate clothes becasue I would have more confidence in my body. So please tell me what are some of the reasons why relationships get rocky after weight loss, and what can you do to prevent this from ruining a good thing?
  21. I think what everyone has said is true -- it depends on the state of your marriage -- and the state of your marriage depends on the mental state of two people -- if your relationship wasn't solid before surgery (or you weren't happy in it), it's definitely not going to be in a good place after surgery. You go through soooo many changes emotionally after surgery -- one of them is the realization that you are no longer the ugly, fat person but the pretty, thin person. That's a HUGE social change. If you or your spouse is not prepared to accept a huge social change and in how people react to you (including those of the opposite sex), that will put a huge strain on your relationship. Another change that will likely occur is your own self-esteem and how you take care of yourself-- we are no longer relegated to Lane Bryant and The Avenue for clothes -- you may have a COMPLETELY different way of dressing once you are thinner because of all the options you'll have. You might wear your hair differently, you might wear your makeup differently -- in other words, you might even look differently than before. Finally, how you react to things will change -- you might stand up for yourself more -- in my case, I'm less angry, less bitter about things -- don't know why, but it just is . . . . So there are a lot of changes that come a long with losing a lot of weight -- and if you have a solid relationship going into surgery, the changes are less likely to interfere with it -- and if you don't have a solid relationship, then the changes might just exacerbate any problems you might have had before.

    Date Set FINALLY!

Thank you @@KMA0910!! Why has it been so long if you don't mind me asking? Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App I started in winter 2014 with 1 surgeon but in summer 2015, I didn't think we were on the same page any longer. So I went to another surgeon and in Nov 2015 attempted VSG, but it had to be aborted after 3 incisions were put in me. They had issues keeping me inflated enough to operate safely. So I allowed myself to heal and continue to lose weight since November, and am now making my 2nd go at VSG surgery. My last sleeve operation was aborted after they put 3 incisions in me. They had to abort the surgery, so I never got the sleeve done.

    Hello from San Andreas

Well did you talk to the Doc about what and when to eat, I was banded April 17.06 and down currently 70lbs. I was on liquids for three weeks after band and then solids as tolerated. Its the portions that I eat and what I dont eat that help me loose the weight. Also welcome, it good to have someone new

    Sleep Apnea Questions

I have a CPAP I got at the beginning of the year, set at a fairly high pressure of 15. My sleep dude said I may never be able to not use it (something about narrow airways) because he can't be sure if the weight loss will change that or not. That said, its something I'll be keeping an eye on. I am hoping at the very least to reduce pressure in 50 pounds or so. That said, I wish I had had the CPAP machine before, being able to sleep through the night has been one of the most amazing things ever. Good luck.
