Weight Loss Prior To Surgery.... Have Any Advice?fo
Sannah replied to Sannah's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you for taking time to share with me. I have thought about this planning aspect as well. I shall put this into action. I like to cook, but my husband is a meat eater (GALORE) and also does not eat leftover (CRAZY!!! Right?) So, I don't like to cook much. I can only eat the same thing for so long. Also I can only freeze so much stuff. I like your angle with salads!! This is surely something I can and want to do!!! I will make a weeks worth and this should surely aid in health and weight loss!! -
Why do people insist on say "you're not planning on losing anymore weight are you?"

I get people asking me "when you get to the weight you want do they take that "thing" out?" That "thing" saved my life and was the best choice I ever made!! -
Sleep apnea worse after surgery
Elidh replied to ClareLynn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was well controlled with CPAP for several years. Some months after my VSG surgery, my events got crazy high. My sleep doctor ordered another sleep study (yuck) and determined I now have central sleep apnea (CSA), which isn’t affected, apparently, by one’s weight. So, I now use an adapto- servo unit and I’m doing fine. -
Body image issues, emotional issues, regrets....interesting article

This one didn't ring true for me, but it reminded me a lot of some posts I've seen on here and I thought maybe someone would find it useful. https://www.womenshealthmag.com/weight-loss/a19995829/weight-loss-surgery-story/ -

Stuff that has been stored in your fat cells are releasing now that your losing weight, plus hormones n your body constantly adjusting. I went thru a lot of the same things you are, just takes time. What helped me was trying to stay on a schedule(eating, exercising, sleep) and talking to family n friends. Or you could talk w your Dr or surgeons office/Dr to see what they say. -
My First Post
Bring It On replied to Finally Fit in Florida's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Same here for me. I have just started the process. I ordered the "big book" and probably read every post on this site! I have my first meeting with a surgeon on 7/21. I have Type 2 Diabetes and really bad sleep apnea, so my insurance is waiting on my surgeon visit to make a determination. I am determined to lose this weight and live healthy. What was the time table for others between surgeon/psych/nutrition visits before surgery? My insurance does not require a "losing period", but do most surgeons? Thanks for the support!! -
This is my first post. I had a lap-band in 2007, never lost more that 55 lbs, never found the "sweet" spot. Took saline out of band May 2011, gained 30+ lbs. I was going to have Revision surgery to the sleeve with Dr. Aceves in December, but I chicken out. Now I have the surgery scheduled with Dr. Umbach in Nevada for March 9. I am scared because... I am my son's only parent! What if it doesn't work, just like the band? Shouldn't I try Medifast first? People tell me it is TOO extreme, and try to help me figure out what else I can do. What if it doesn't work? Maybe there is a hormonal reason I can't lose? What if it doesn't work? I am 5'8", 315. I have HBP, hypothyroidism, PCOS, Anxiety/Depression, and now I am anemic and have Vitamin D deficiency. I was not heavy growing up, but not skinny. I weighed 140 lbs at 18. At 29, (180 lbs) I tried to get pregnant, so I took shots, etc. Well, 4 tries later it worked, but I weighed 240 lbs. I only gained 13 lbs, while pregnant and gained another 35, within months of giving birth. CRAZY!!! In 2008-09, I tried (5 times) again for another baby, more shots, etc. No luck, but more weight. Sorry, this is SO long. I don't have anyone to tell my story to, so you are it! :smile1: Thank you for any advice on my anxiousness. i had a sleep study done, but only have sleep apena on my back. The doctor said it's so mild that it's not even really considered sleep apena. You need a minimum of 5 events an hour to have "sleep apnea," and I had 4 events an hour, but ONLY when I was on my back. She said position therapy would help and that I didn't need a CPAP, and that after the sleeve and losing weight it would go away.

8/21 sleeve, PMS gain? Anyone else???
dr3am3rstarz replied to Kennalb's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved last November. I just now, last month actually, started my period for the first time. I had a bit of weight gain, but it has since went back down. The period is here again this month, and it's much worse than last month, and I gained a bit back, but I am sure it will go back down as soon as this part is over. -
Started my journey on July 2012. Starting weight was 310 and now 209lbs. 100lbs gone 30 more then I will start my second stage (bulking) to get rid of the excess skin and achieve the body I always dreamed about. I no longer wear 5x shirt or 47 pants, I don't look like a hip hop rapper with shirts hanging to my knees. I wear xl shirts and pants that i borrowed from my brother I usually run away when a picture is taken, but after losing weight I got more self confidence here is a picture my friend somehow was able to take it Last year, I loved Burger king Today And im also down 4 lbs this week reaching 205lbs XD

Hello jlg1019. I worked at the hospital in Princeton, WV for 25 years. I know the doc that did your surgery. As you stated he is a superb doc. Congrats on your surgery and weight loss.

Yes, the "exercise" reminder...I try to tell myself that you don't need that...but you're right...I lose more when I walk my mile or two a day. I have also bought some small weights as I'm older and getting "loose" skin as I loose. Thanks, jlg1019

Hi: I had surgery on March 27. I'm 54 years old and was the first one to have the surgery by this Doctor and in this hospital. He's a superb Doctor and took a lot of training by the best, so I wasn't worried. I was hurting more than I thought after surgery, but recovered fast and was back to work in a week in a Doctor's office as a secretary/receptionist. I lost 16 pounds in a week and only drank four ounces every four hours of liquid. After that week, I felt very nervous and stressed that I wasn't doing well, because my weight loss slowed down. I lost eleven pounds in the next 3 weeks. The next month was even slower, and I lost only six pounds, and I seem hungrier faster. I'm now in my third month, and wonder if I need some saline inserted. I have always been tall (5ft.9inches) and weighed more than most because I am a big girl, but gained the "ugly" weight after a hysterectomy at the age of 30. I work for a psychiatrist in WV and had my surgery done in Princeton, WV. I'm happy to be able to chat with people who have also had this surgery.

How long before normal activities?
JamieLynn77 replied to kemo46's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 4 months out, and I was told by my doc, not to do anything that engaged my core, for at least 2 months. I just got permission to do crunches and ab work. I would almost say that weights would fall into that catagory. Running may be different. I have never been a runner, so i am not sure. but i was on the move almost right after i came home. i think that contributed to my speedy recovery. I was always up and moving.maybe not always doing anything strenuous, but i was moving none the less. so I would just get with your doc. Lord knows from talking to different people on here, each surgeon is different lol, Now tho, I do all my old routine and have no worries. :-) -
Having Second Thoughts Now
thinoneday replied to 5DogMa's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow that is crazy, but from what i hear it's normal. . . i was self pay and did all these tests in one day. . .my process was like this. . . seminar in October, doctor visit, psych eval and dietician visit in November in 1 day. . test like yours in 1 day in early December minus the sleep study. . and surgery in late dec. . . very fast, very easy. . and yup had to have all $15,500.00 up front in cash, no ifs, buts, or whatevers. . . .now i've lost all the weight and still have a loan to pay. . hehehe that is funny, the weight beat out the loan. . . -
I am really feeling fustrated and discouraged! Everything is taking so long! I've been at this a long time going to my first seminar in February. It seems like my whole life this year has been about getting this surgery. I have gone through so much already and now the doctor wants 2 more tests. Upper GI and thyroid panel. I've had so many tests that cost thousands of dollars it's crazy to the point I think they are trying to discourage me from having the surgery. sleep study, endoscope, colonoscopy, various heart tests including a nuclear study, ekg, xrays, labs and more labs, dietian, psychological evaluation "Let's see how much more we can put her through until she gives up." I'm 57 years old so maybe they are extra careful??? Now, I'm starting to doubt if I need the surgery since I am loosing weight on my own. I am penciled in for December 7th for VSG pending the outcome of these lastest tests and insurance approval. I'm not worried about insurance approval since I meet their criteria. More time off work and more $. This hospital wanted my 20% upfront to do the Upper GI test. They took the money out of my account before I even had the proceedure! Wow, so if you didn't have the $170 up front I guess you wouldn't get the test. I bet the hospital will do the same thing when/if I have the surgery. I've almost reached my maximum out of pocket for the year because of all these tests so I don't have much more to pay out. If it gest pushed into next year I'm not going to have it done. They don't make you go through all this in Mexico!!

I think I'm scared to eat...
CindyMinnesota replied to Twinkles's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats on your weight loss!!!!! ) I absolutely remember feeling the same way you did. :tongue2: I felt that every time I moved on to a new stage. I spoke with a patient facilitator that I had..And she said, "Well..You have to advance. You can't stay on liquids for the rest of your life". And that was enough to switch my mindset. It is scary. I have been banded since July 3rd. I just started on solids on Monday..So far (cross my fingers!!!) I have not had any issues yet. So, hopefully that will give you some reassurance. You are not alone! Like my facilitator said, you will have to advance at some point...Just make sure not to rush things, follow the orders that you were given and you will do just fine  -
I was sleeved 7/23/2013 and am diabetic too! Weight is coming off slowly, but I have to be very cautious with carbs and sugars. My weightloss has improved since going back on my meds (metformin, 500mg 2x daily) and I'm exercising 5 days a week now. I try to eat lots of protein and usually drink a protein shake for breakfast. I eat fish, turkey, chicken but no beef. Snacks consist of string cheese, almonds and SF pudding. (sometimes beef jerky). Eating between 600- 800 calories per day, but I feel hungry a lot too. May increase protein this week.

I know there have been countless questions about hair loss, and I've searched and read through a lot of the posts, but my question is a little bit different ... My hair is short and medium brown, and it is falling out! I wanted to grow it out, but it didn't happen before the hair loss started. What I want is tips and stories about how others have dealt with the hair loss. Wigs? Extensions? What did you do to just deal with it emotionally and while it is happening? I know there's not really a way to prevent it once it starts, I just need to cope with it without locking myself in my house and never going out where people will see me. I've finally lost weight and feel good and confident enough to go out, and now my hair is thinning and i feel like people are already staring at me! I had surgery October 17. To fill or not to fill? I need help please
happygirl65 replied to spoiltmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I started on a very low dose of antidepressant my appetite did diminish and I did lose some weight just because I wasn't craving food for comfort the way I had before the meds. In all honesty though it was something like 5 pounds. I am still on that very low dose over a year later and the effects are the same. It never wore off. I only do have the cravings when it's approaching that time of the month so it's more hormonal and less a means of self medicating. I really do think the meds help the seratonin so my brain isn't calling for some food that will boost it...if that makes sense. I think that you should pay attention to all of your body cues....if you don't have an appetite don't eat. My surgeon says that the band works by tricking the brain into thinking you have eaten more than you have....so if your brain thinks you are full perhaps it's working better than you think or the combination is just working well together. I wish you every bit of luck. You may just be on a temporary plateau but it is important to tell you doctor about all of your concerns. You sound perfectly reasonable with a well thought out set of questions that a professional should be able to help you with or explain better what is going on with your body. Very Best wishes in getting it all sorted out. -

No weight loss weeks 5-9 post op
Introversion replied to Milindia's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Revision patients may lose weight a at a slightly slower rate than those who have virgin first-time sleeves. However, bariatric surgeons don't always inform prospective patients of this potential reality to avoid discouraging them. Slower weight loss often happens to revision patients because they've already experienced the metabolic shock of a previous bariatric surgical procedure. Unfill for International Travel?
abraxasbear posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm at 10cc in a 14cc band, and I'm travelling to Peru for two weeks in October. I'll be taking part in some ceremonies with traditional healing plants, which are known to sometimes induce vomiting. Knowing that vomiting could be an issue with the band, I asked my doctor about this. Much to my surprise, he recommended that I get a partial (as in "most") unfill before my trip, and refill afterward. As he put it, you don't want to be out in the jungles of Peru, having a problem with the band. I have some real misgivngs about this idea. In talking with the guides leading my planned trip, the vomiting reaction is not really common (they've had only one person vomit, and he'd worked himself up ahead of time to the point that he was overanxious and probably brought it on himself). Naturally, I also worry about regaining weight during the trip. Finally, if I do get a "big" unfill before the trip, can it all be replaced afterward, or would I have to work up a little at a time, just as I did to get to my 10cc? Has anyone else here been temporarily unfilled for travel purposes? Has anyone not had an unfill prior to travel, and wish they had? Thoughts? Experiences? -
Essenses171, If you have access to pre-op support group, attend. I found themvery helpful. I started my journey September 2011 and just had my surgery Monday. It was a long process of life change classes, support group meetings and exercise/diet to lose weight loss before surgery. Take it one step at a time. Listen to your doctor/support team. Exercise, Exercise, Exercise; it will help with recovery. You can do it.
