  1. I am currently 235bs and my doctor has told me he will not even consider a revision until I get down to 210lbs. My lapband is empty as of now (just had a baby and having problems finding that sweet spot) fill/unfill/fill/unfill. My question is, has anyone else ever had to lose weight before being considered for a revision? THANKS

    African American vsgers!

I start my two week pre-op diet on Wednesday. I'm revising from the band to the sleeve on August 12th. I'm so ready to get this started. UPDATE: I just got a call asking me if I wanted to change my date to August 10. Hel-lro! Yes Indeed!

Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?

That is very true, I asked my surgeon on Friday if stalls in between a good loss is normal. He said absolutely. I also asked him about the possiblity of sleeven ( my sleeve ) being a bit bigger since I am a convert from lap-band. His answer was that for some patients that is a possibilty but in my case it is not. He said he made it nice and tight as a non revision patients would be. So that means that some days Sleeven is hungry and allows a little more than half cup of food. Other days he only wants a bite or two. Both perfectly normal ..

Dr. Richard Carter - Arlington TX

I have used Dr. Carter since 2006 for my Lapband, all fills, other surgeries (bowel obstruction, incisional hernias) and now for my band revision to sleeve.... Love him!
  5. My Lapband, revision to Sleeve were both done by Dr. Richard Carter in Arlington. He has also been my general surgeon for other non-bariatric issues including bowel obstruction and hernia repairs. My wife and I both love him!

    Insurance Approval

Hi, everyone just wondering if there's any revision sleeve to bypass patient of there that have United Healthcare. If so was it extremely hard to get approved for the revision surgery and did it take a long time for the approval. Also I'm only 14 months out from being sleeved and just wondering if I would have to go through the entire process again. I'm having extreme complications with gerd not to mention I've only lost about 30-40lbs with the sleeve. My BMI is still over 40 and my health issues have become more complicated. My diabetes is worse than ever, my blood pressure is staying up and the GERD has me in pain and vomiting a lot. Any advice anyone??

    SLEEVE TO BYPASS REVISION

Wow, I'm so glad I found this thread it has really encouraged me to go forth with a revision from sleeve to bypass. I was sleeved May 2014 and has only lost about 30lbs in 14 months. Like most of you since having the sleeve I have the worst reflux ever I didn't know people suffered like this. I'm always in pain I can't eat with pain, burning and the vomiting. I'm in pure misery.

    I'm new.

Wishing you the best! I am a revision from sleeve to RNY and I second your nervousness!!! I think it's to be expected. Please keep us posted on your progress!
  9. I took 2 weeks in 2012 when I had my sleeve. I was ready to go back after a week in a half. With my revision to RNY and hernia repair, I plan on taking 4. I think this surgery may require a little more time for recuperation.
  10. I'm currently finishing up my pre-op requirements for band revision to gastric sleeve and was considering switching to gastric bypass because I'm concerned that I won't be able to lose enough weight. I am currently 368 lbs and 5'7" tall. How was your weight loss rate, was it greater slower because of having previously been banded. I was banded in 2009 btw.
  11. Buh Bye

    I'm new.

Hi, I'm Sundie. Hopefully I'm doing this right. I'm scheduled for a revision from the Lapband to the bypass and I am, of course nervous. Especially since I'm self pay!! Gah! I'm just here reading and it's great! Thanks to everyone for sharing! I'm 5'4 and starting out at 307 big ones. I'll be 46 next month. Talk about a pivotal time in my life. Woot!
  12. Call Dr. Victor Gonzalez at http://www.obesitysurgerydallas.com/. I think you will be very happy with the price he quotes you. He did my lap band in 2009 and he is doing my sleeve revision in August. I am paying cash too. I shopped around and he is still priced the best. Good luck.
  13. I had the revision on Thursday and will be back in the office at a desk job on Tuesday. Will have to do some work from home tomorrow thou. Ideally would take more time but had to take vacation for the surgery...

    Food dreams

I did the RNY on Jun but I can eat almost everything even the potato chips. can you eat those things? and what happen to you if you do eat them? how much of food you can tolerate to eat in the same time? actually, I had a gastric banding revision to RNY and it's really new situation for me.
  16. I was banded in 2010 and had a revision to the RNY in October 2014. IT WAS THE BEST DECISION OF MY LIFE!!!!! I was in the hospital for three days when I had both surgeries. With the band I could barely get out of bed because I hurt so bad. With the revision to RNY, 4 hours after my surgery I was walking laps around the hospital. Of course you are a little tender, but it was so much easier than the previous surgery. I also had a c-section in 2005 when I had my daughter, the RNY was easier than that. Make sure you go into the surgery with the mentality that you are going to come out of the surgery as a winner, that you've got this. As long as you set your mind to it, you will do great. My surgeon has done many surgeries and he said that I made it look easy. Honestly, my goal was to be released from the hospital before my 3 day mark was up. Their policy trumped my wanting. LOL! Also, with the band I didn't lose any weight. All my weight-loss was before the lapland surgery and after the RNY surgery. A total of 89 pounds, with 50 of those being post op for the RNY. I've kinda of hit a plateau, but that is because my family and I took two months to move from Georgia to Alaska. On the road eating isn't easy or healthy. I hope it works out for you!!!!

    Why Not Bypass?

I prefer least invasive methods first. If the sleeve fails, I can always do the duodenal switch or gastric bypass. But I'm young, mobile, no co-morbidities, lower rate of complications, and the success rates were statistically insignificant. I don't have to deal with dumping or malabsorption, fewer Vitamins, and no costly revision if it needs to be reversed. Also, I love my doctor, but I know he makes more money on a 40k procedure than a 14k one.
  18. Here are some points made by Dr. Weiner in his revision video: 1. Conversion from sleeve to bypass: only 10-25 pound weight loss, usually reserved for patients with severe acid reflex 2. Gastric Band over sleeve is experimental 3. Skilled surgeons can convert sleeve to duodenal switch, if you choose this route please research the surgeon carefully and make sure he has performed this kind of revision successfully for a large number of patients 4. Some surgeons can switch from sleeve to SADI, but is not done often in US yet (refer to video for more details)
  19. First of all, I am sorry you are having this problem. Even after losing 140 pounds and making it to a healthy weight, I still have hypothyroidism. In fact, its just as bad as before surgery and I still take the same medication at the same dose. Surgery does nothing to help thyroid problems, unlike diabetes and hypertension. Although I’m still in my honeymoon phase (9 months post op), I haven’t been one of the lucky ones that can eat anything they want and still lose weight. Nor am I one of those patients that are full after three bites. I realized this after 6 months and decided to put more of a rigid eating structure in place. Fortunately, I’ve learned that your rate of success is not determined by the size of your sleeve or even choice of procedure. The quantity of food you eat is not near as important as the actual food choice. When I learned this, it finally became clear to me why I had lost more weight than others in my clinic support group that were boasting extreme restriction. My strategy now is to focus on food that will never cause re-gain despite quantity (green leafy vegetables). I've gained much insight about how to be successful from Dr. Matthew Weiner, a reputable bariatric surgeon that has many YouTube videos that are extremely helpful. Why Not Bypass?

I was the perfect sleeve candidate. No GERD and no other comorbities.I went in wanting the bypass. I have been overweight since the age of 5. I thought bypass would be a much better surgery for me. I was on a NUT plan a year before surgery and it took me 6 months to lose 12lbs. Anyways, I let the dr. talk me into sleeve. Almost 3 years later I am in the revision process. I have had some complications that has lead to the RNY path. I wish I had the RNY first.
  21. I had the lap band July 2010 lost only 16 pounds, Lap band was removed Oct 2012. Had the sleeve done Nov 2012, lost 24 lbs only. I now have an appointment with a new surgeon to consider revision. I don't know which procedure he will recommend. I am still a diabetic with hypothyroidism being treated by endocrinologist. I have been seeing a WLS Nutritionist since 2011. Frustrated, I think I made the wrong decision two times. Was it the surgeon that did both of my surgeries? Is it me? Am I destined not to loose weight? Thanks for your support.

    From lapband to sleeve? Anyone?

I had the lap band in 2010 lost only 16 lbs, had it removed Oct 2012 Doctor said it slipped, had Sleeve done Nov 2012 lost only 20lbs. I do have hypothyroidism and diabetes. My Thyroid is under control, my diabetes it varies. I am going to see a new surgeon on Monday to see what else could be done...and what type of revision.
  23. Well i am 5 days out from revision and it still a little tuff to get around. I had a lot of scar tissue as well and it makes it worse. I am so glad i am on here. I do have a question...is anyone else experiencing a sort of bad breath?

    Questions to ask during consultation

There are different types of weight loss surgery. The different types affect the amount of weight loss expected and the speed of weight loss. They affect the revision rate (this relates to how often one might need to have the surgery modified or corrected or adjusted or changed to another type of surgery). I choose RNY gastric bypass because it had the smallest revision rate. It also produced the quickest and deepest weight loss. Also because of a pre-existing medical condition "major acid reflux or GERD", it was the only procedure recommended for this type of condition. But it also means that I have to follow a strict Vitamin regime for the rest of my life because my body no longer synthesizes Vitamins from the food that I eat. The process of getting surgery is not simple. It has many steps. Qualifying for insurance is one of them. But then you need to undergo an evaluation by a Psychologist. There is a half day of pre-op testing to uncover any medical condition that may impact the surgery. Generally there is also a half day of classes in which almost all aspects of the surgery and meal plan and vitamin regime and exercise are covered. Many insurance plans require that you undergo a medically supervised dieting and exercise program in order to qualify.

Frustrated, I think I made the wrong decision two times. Was it the surgeon that did both of my surgeries? Is it me? Am I destined not to loose weight? Thanks for your support.
