    Too fat for a bypass

Elcee undoubtedly so, except open surgery has its inherent risks. Wounds heal slower, more risk of infection, incision break down, my own daddy ended up with a ventral hernia post another type of abdominal surgery, strangely my daughter the R.D. did also. RD was able to have hers repaired maybe 10 years later, lost her navel and a lot of broken- down stretched out skin, forbidden to ever gain weight again. Ugly then, not all that gorgeous now, Daddy died with his at 80 unrepaired, ugly, begged him NEVER go shirtless, it upsets your grandsons(and me too) to see IT! Was told in case of any cat accident, roll to floorboards, curl into fetal ball and pray Our GOD allows YOU to live. And although I do have an right paramedian scar from open appendectomy/gall bladder removal nearly 35 years ago (February 1984) , my flabby belly was beautifully laprascopic RNY SEPTEMBER 5th. True recounting, told Dr Needleman at our July 2018 chat I would prefer an Open incision to no surgery. He drew back, said " Do you KNOW how long it takes an Open Incision to heal? Flipped up my T-Shirt, flashed him my belly, and he laughed ruefully " Okay, Point Taken! I'll enter it into My Notes!" And I have the prettiest 7 incisions you ever saw, they're fading into the train wreck of abdominal stretch marks I have, but if YOU look close, HE DID BEAUTIFUL WORK! Sorry about all of you with the rest ' cause I think I got the BEST! And as long as each one of us feels THAT Way about Theirs. The world🌏 will turn smoothly!

    Plateau?

I am two weeks post op today. I havent hit a stall yet, but i am sure it is coming as i start puree foods today. I missed walking the last two days due to busy schedules and not getting home till 10 pm last night and 9pm the night before. I am going to try and make up for it today and tomorrow by doing 2 miles instead of 1.. and then maybe just do two miles a day going forward. I just want to make sure i am eating enough for that amount of walking. Up until now i was only taking in 350 calories a day, and burning off 200 just in the walk never mind the rest of the day.. Here is to the next phase.
  4. I am 3 weeks post op, sleeved 10/29. I gained 12 after surgery and about fainted lol. I lost 5 pounds over the next few days and then on day 6 I dropped 6 pounds overnight lol. I have had mostly steady weight loss since other than a 9 day stall right after week one. I am sure my body was just adjusting still. I feel like I am losing pretty rapidly and enjoying the heck out of it. I wish I would lose even faster though lol!!

    How will you handle Thanksgiving?

I am sorry to hear this. My dad also passed away about two weeks ago. He was diagnosed with cancer only 10 days before his death, so it has been rough. He wanted us to celebrate the holidays though, so we will have a traditional Thanksgiving with immediate family only. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Pre-Op Journey

Okay, so I got a call from my doctor yesterday. I missed her call because my baby was sleeping and I didn’t want to wake him. She left a message that my sleep study came back negative and she’ll see me next month. But at our appointment she wrote in her note that I had to have sleep apnea to qualify for surgery.. then she diagnosed me with hypertension and prescribed meds. So I called back and didn’t get an answer. Called my navigator and she said the doctor decides if hypertension can be used and she or the doctor will let me know something by Monday. Then I got an email from the navigator today that I needed a different form of medical records for my weight history. I’ll attach that email with this post. I took it as I needed a 2 year recorded history of weight loss specific visits. Also, I went over a 35 BMI in January or February of 2017, so I was thinking we’d be good if the surgery was in 2019, but she said 2016 and 2017 records.... Sorry, I swear there’s a point. I called insurance, and they confirmed that: 1. The two year history can be ANY physicians visit notes whether they’re weight loss visits or not. 2. The two year history is the two years prior to the actual surgery. 3. The doctor decides what comorbidity qualifies you for the surgery. In closing, I’m at the mercy of the clinic. In my opinion, I do qualify without question. I just need the doctor to agree with me that although my blood pressure isn’t “very high” that it is clinically high.
  7. A lot,of December people starting show up for our Holiday Party. And you are now assured a Table for One and starting into 2019 with brand-new lives! Welcome and may each surgery bring hope into your lives.
  8. I have done my research and made the choice to go with a gastric sleeve. I quit smoking last month and have since gained about 10 more pounds. I plan to have my surgery at Ohio State University and have sent in my application. My husband and I are both going to do it. I am so anxious about the application process. OSU has received my application, but I don’t have an initial appointment yet. What can I expect at that appointment? My BMI is just under 38, hypertension, and insurance covers the surgery. Any experiences would be helpful if you don’t mind sharing! Thanks in advance.

    October 2018 Sleevers

I have reflux and my surgeon also recommended bypass, but after some tests said the sleeve would be OK, so that's what we did. I'm surprised your doc said to do a revision if you don't lose 50% - my doc said I'd only have to do revision if my reflux became intolerable. he said that only something like 10% of sleevers get worse reflux and 4-6% of sleeves need to be revised to bypass. Even if I "only" lose 50%, I'll be delighted. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'd love to lose more, but I'd be fine if the ultimate loss is the average 60% EWL.

    November 2018 Sleevers!?!?

No you will NOT DIE! I have had anesthesia probably 10 times in 5 years, I'm 72, if it was going to "do somebody in", I'm a much stronger candidate than you'll ever be. And it's so much nicer, easier and doesn't leave you sick enough to pray for death like the Bad Old Days did! Been there, done that and had it done to ME.My RNY anesthesia was SMOOTH, first I had the coolest A, his name was Dave, my surgeon brought all the main players to my room for an introduction, real benefit to being 1st surgery of the Day. Think before I was taken back, while he was patting my hand he might have slipped some Happy Juice in my IV. At any rate I rode like Queen ElIzabethII IN her Golden State Carriage up to the O.R. Super warm, super comfy. Now I had heard horror stories about how the room is cold-Nope, how they make you transfer to the table, stretch your arms out like you're being crucified before you go to sleep-Nope, treat you like you're a piece of meat-Nope. Let me share how it was for me, okay? First I felt totally like I was a Rock 🌟 star, everybody was there for ME. My surgeon had joked he would wave at me, see I was operated upon at Ohio State University, a teaching hospital , many people fear they will end up in the quaking hands of a student. So Dr Needleman😷 waved from his position maybe 8 feet away. I was not abandoned in that big room with all strangers! I slid myself over on the table, they offered their help but this was something. Frustr8 could DO. And this was the 1st operating table I fit on, always feared falling off into the floor. Dave made sure I was nicely tucked in, didn't feel claustrophobic, just incredibly comforted. Then Dave, gosh he had the prettiest 👀 eyes, even with a 😷mask! He said. OK,Are you comfortable? I said, "why yes I believe I am", next thing I knew I was in my patient room, feeling so good I had to lift my gown and make sure they HAD DONE SURGERY ON ME! And I bet yours wIll be just as fine. So no panic, fears or tears, You gonna be Just Fine!😝😎😝
  11. look up the thread for " Surgery- it's the Easy way out" people have been saying it for eons, wasn't True then, not True now! Baby it is HARD. See most people's bodies are perfectly happy you're FAT/OBESE. They are bebopping along, plenty of high-calorie tasty foods coming in, one burp of appetite and you are eating once again. Things, Body Says, are just fine and Dandy. And then you go , rocking and shocking it to the foundations, and your body tries to fight back. Say it isn't so, Joe, you're not going to STARVE ME, are you? Well in a stucturalized way, YOU ARE, and it is like riding an untamed bronco at times. Oh you may despair of having ever a smooth gaited Tennessee Walking 🐎, shoot I do myself still. Been through numerous fad diets, a presurgery liver-shrinking diet and a bumpy after-surgery trek that hasn't concluded yet. My personal diet 🐎 horse, people think I have it tamed already, well it still harbors a latent desire to "buck" me off and leave me still sitting in the middle of the corral on my rump in the dust! One of our service groups motto is Eternal Vigilance, and that holds true for Weight Loss in its various forms. Never get complacent, it's a long drawn out process. Someday YOU TOO will reach your weight loss goal and go into " maintance", just saw a posting from a veteran, pounds were trying to return and she stated what she is doing to keep 5-10 pounds from sneaking back. Oh I would 💓to be her size and weight but I now see it still won't be EASY! But keep your face toward the🌞 Sunshine it's there for us all!🌈

The only thing I stopped taking was my blood pressure med and that was only on the day of surgery.. was instructed by the drs team. But ya.. ask your surgeon, but for me I didnt have to stop any of my meds. Happy note.. yesterday I found out the light headedness I was feeling in the last week or two was caused by my being overly medicated.. so in one month my blood pressure medication.. one has been completely removed and the other is now half of the strength I was taking before.. pretty cool.. and I had my surgery on 10/22. Thanks for the input. I am gonna try to have t least 6 meals today and see how it goes. My doctor says to have 5 meals a day being 3 meals and 2 snacks all below 200 calories and 5g of fat or less. I eat 4-5 times and feel hungry, I think I need more because I wake up at 5am and go to bed at 10-11pm plus walk 50 minutes on the treadmill. I'll definitely try the 6 meals or more today...Thanks

You lost 50 pounds in less than a month?! Kudos to you! Sorry that you had to go through a lot of complications, hope you’re feeling better now. I started on soft food but ate some solid with some sort of sauce on it and it’s been fine. I felt very tired the first few days due to lack of water, but now I am doing everything I’m supposed to with no problem. I did have some trouble with mashed potatoes that got me sweaty and feeling like I had a ball in my tummy almost threw up, other than that fine. I do feel hungry even though the doctor said I wouldn’t 🤷‍♀️ I was sleeved on 10/30 and have lost 17 pounds since.
  16. Wow from April until now but I'm finally there! 12/19/18 I get my sleeve and my 2nd chance at a healthy life!

    October 2018 Sleevers

I had surgery 10/29 also! I gained a lot during surgery. Went into surgery at 349 and that evening when weighed I was 361 heh. I am 3 weeks and 1 day post op now and now 332. Believe it or not, I lost nearly everything the first week out. By one week out I was down to 340, one day I even lost 6 pounds. Then after the first week, I stalled for 9 days. I didn't lose one single pound. Then last week, bam, I started losing again and so far this week since last Wednesday I have lost 8 more pounds (thats in 6 days). It's amazing and exhilarating, but those 9 days that I didn't lose an ounce were so scary. I just knew I wasnt ever gonna lose anymore. I eat 3 times a day and can eat 3 to 4 oz at a time. I haven't had one single problem since the 3rd day after surgery when I finally stopped throwing up. I feel super lucky and I feel so so so glad and happy that I did this surgery. I hope I continue losing this way, and always worry that I will just stop losing weight before I am at least down to 200. I know better, but my brain wont just knock it off. I have followed my doc orders pretty much but do eat what i would call soft food now a little early instead of just pureed. I drink about 80 to 100 oz of liquids a day and my protein is anywhere from 75 to 100 grams a day. I am getting better at sorting the protein but not perfect yet. My doc said that as long as I drink plenty of fluids, being high on protein occasionally wont be a problem, so I am just trying to get it about right as often as possible (I am recommended to have between 70 and 85 grams). Your stall wont last forever, and I read these forums relentlessly while i was stalled so I wouldnt get too down about it, and I did get pretty down about it but didn't lose hope. And thank goodness I had good weight loss again so hopefully next stall I can ride out without feel so worried lol!! Like you said, we can't go back, only forward, so just try to take your mind off of it, and know that everyone has some pretty big worries during stalls and everyone here has made it through and still lost the weight. I just wanna lose it now lol. And we are all here for you!! I am cheering you on certainly surgery twin! Hugs and hugs and hang in there!
  19. And another EGJ is scheduled for me! Wednesday November28 2018 at 8AM. Are we keeping on doing this every 2 weeks until.it is fixed or somebody gives up, and I wonder if an Open Surgery is in my future, maybe January 2019? No verdict, not even an indictment, maybe my imagination running away with ME. Maybe a Flight of Fancy?

    November 2018 Sleevers!?!?

I went to my 2 week post op today.. a few days early .. I am actually 12 days post op and i am down just about 30 pounds in total and 10 since surgery. My stitches were removed and i was cleared for Puree.. and i may be able to take my ballroom dancing classes in 2 more weeks. He said it depends on if i can hold down the puree or not.. Here is to new challenges Happy Thanksgiving All!
  21. 5, Darlin' I have 5 evil Stripe the Gremlin-type along with Hector, my original Gizmo, quiet and not making more trouble in the other, not -so -connected portion. See I went in with gastritis and Hector at the beginning of this farce. I should have been on Carafate from the beginning, not had to wait until a month had elapsed, We Are playing Catch-Up now. I'm not going Friday, can't be seen until a week from tomorrow at 8 AM, apparently Dr Noria is taking herself a little Holiday for Thanksgiving, ours not hers, she graduated University in Toronto, so she belongs still to Royal College of Surgeons as well as the American ones. And I don't know if I emotionally can keep going biweekly into 2019. How much longer until they threaten or do open surgeries? Maybe I NEVER WILL BE truly well again, what a ROTTEN finale to my story that will be!😷😟😪😥
  22. My weight will JUST NOT BUDGE. I'm annoyed. This stall sucks. Can stress alone trigger a stall? I'm 237, have been for...oh 10 days now. I'm doing everything else I need to, but am more stressed than I have been.

    1. KimTriesRNY

You will stall. I’ve had stalls for over three weeks at a time. The lower you get, the longer it will take to lose the pounds. Just keep to the program, it will come off. It’s discouraging but everyone goes through it! 🤗

    Orange Theory?

Check with your surgical team. I was cleared for full exercise at 2 weeks post-op, including doing reformer Pilates which is all core all the time. My restriction the first 2 weeks was not to lift more than 10 pounds, after that, so long as it didn't hurt, I could do it. I was back in the gym on a recumbent bike within a week of surgery. I was lifting weights after week 2. I haven't done OT (I do other stuff) but have friends who absolutely love it - in part because there is a system to the class and you are moved from one thing to the next over the course of the hour.

    You will get hungry

In my experience, the "hunger" we're talking about isn't "constant, gnawing" by any means. While I do get a bit of "head hunger" where I want to eat but I don't really NEED to eat, it's very manageable and it seems directly related to whether or not I've gotten a little carried away with carbs/sugar. I also get what I would consider normal hunger. I eat. I feel satisfied. After a few hours, I'm hungry again because I haven't eaten. And the cycle starts again. I have no constant hunger that I cannot satisfy. Heck, I eat with my family and when I'm full, I'm full. I'm not sitting there suffering because I can't eat the food in front of me. I have no desire to eat it. #1-I know that if I do, I will not feel well for long after that bite passed my lips and #2-I'm full, satisfied, and no longer hungry. I do not graze all day. I eat breakfast around 7 or 8. I have a protein-based snack around 10 or 1030. I eat lunch around 1. I eat dinner around 6. If I really feel hungry between lunch and dinner, I might have a little snack like nuts or fruit, but not always. And I try to never eat after 7. I'm not quite sure where you're going with the "if your body insists it needs 2000+ calories" comment. Our bodies get used to a certain caloric intake and when you change that, the body reacts. But, I don't think it has much to do with true hunger, maybe head hunger. Maybe you envision it feeling like you're starving? I can honestly say that I have never had that "starving" feeling since being sleeved (even when I've gone hours and hours, having forgotten to eat). And yes, you CAN be satisfied on a small meal. Early on, your meals probably are about 5 bites, but those 5 bites filled me up. I eat more than 5 bites now. I'm up to about a 3/4 of a cup and I'm absolutely satisfied with that and not just for 15 minutes. I feel full for at least an hour on that 3/4 cup and satisfied for hours, satisfied meaning that I'm not hungry and I'm not obsessing on my next meal/finding snacks/etc. I think that the implication that you will not be hungry after this surgery is an exaggeration and is highly individual. I can honestly say that I had no hunger for the first 3 months. During this healing time, I ate because I knew I had to introduce nutrition and/or hydration into my body. Then, I noticed that I was starting to get hungry late afternoon, hours after lunch, but before my dinner. But let me repeat, it is NOT the same hunger that I had prior to surgery where it was very easy to go on a binge and get out of control.

    FISHING FOR COMPLIMENTS

8 weeks out from my ESG and I’m down 30lbs!! From 204 to 174! Sooo glad I did this. 19 more lbs till I get to goal! Really didn’t think with all going on in my life (full time speech therapist/rehab director in a nursing home, own/operate pizza shop with my husband and babysit granddaughter a couple days a week..!) that I would manage to stick to the program so well. But I did! 😃
