    Scareddd

I had RNY gastric bypass not a sleeve but no pain once left hospital after 4 days. I think pain depends on incision and level of care. I was on an IV with pain killers post op so had no issues. Didn't need pain killers when home. I had laparoscopic surgery so incisions are tiny. It was the best decision for me to lose my excess weight. I'm 2 years post op and very happy and healthy. It is surgery so expect some discomfort and pain but honestly a couple of days of discomfort is nothing compared to the multitude of benefits from losing weight, getting healthy and gaining confidence.
  2. Thank you everyone for your responses. As the veteran’s have stressed, i’m just trying to take advantage of this window of opportunity to take off as much weight as possible. Also trying to maintain muscle mass as I have read that with rapid wt loss you are also sacrificing muscle. 30 min of elliptical didn’t seem like very much activity to me but maybe my body is telling me otherwise.

    Any November sleevers out there

I am scheduled for November 3, I started my 2 week liquid pre op diet today. I work nights so this is going to be a little bit of a challenge. However it is so going to be worth it. I am excitedly nervous... I am sure most of you can understand what I mean. I am excited to start on this new journey and finally have a good tool to help me lose the weight I need to lose. I know its not going to be an easy fix and I have to put a lot of work into it. I am nervous because, well its surgery, need I say more? I am looking forward to hearing from others. and how everyone is doing. Happy sleeving!!!

    Bummed;(

When I first looked into the surgery over three years ago and found out about the six month supervised diet I would have to do, I blew it off because I didn't want to wait that long. I thought, "I can do this on my own." So after hem hawing for another year or so and gaining more weight, I started my six months of supervised visits. They flew by and all the hoops I had to jump through were so worth it when on November 29, 2010 I had surgery and began my new life. It's disappointing at first, but so worth it in the end. Good luck to you on your journey!
  5. I don't feel like I am an emotional eater, more of a sugar addict and a boredom "grazer" but I would like to get some counseling just to help give this process every chance possible to get the weight off and STAY off.. but I am not sure if I am supposed to be looking for just a general counselor OR is there a specific type?

    I'm driving myself crazy

As I understand it, for every significant drop in weight the body "resets". The weight will come off but maybe not as rapidly as you would like. You didn't mention exercise, are you walking? Go a little further every day, not only will it help to lose but you need to build your strength back. You are still recovering from surgery so know that also. The surgery is a tool not the answer, so look at all components of what you are doing. Good luck!!

    Scared to weigh tomorrow....

I got an app called "my weight" I have entered in the numbers every day since pre-op, and when my scale doesn't go down that day...i look at my app and feel satisfied that my overall weight number is down. Just an idea... I get frustrated when I don't lose for 2-3 days. I had rny bypass on December 29th, so I'm still in pain. The numbers really do make the pain worth it. That's my truth.
  8. I am worried about not being able to firm up with exercise after I reach my goal. I have absolutely no desire to have "body contouring surgery.". I have spoke to many wls alums who say that the extra skin often can be as frustrating as being obese. My Dr. did say that with my age, health and the fact that I am at the lower BMI spectrum I should have good success through exercise. I would like to hear how other's have handled this. I am 48, 5'2" and 210 lbs. My surgery is scheduled for September 10th

    Scared! 14th July!

Sorry I cant help you with any liquid diet info, as I did' nt have to do that at all. I just was told not to gain any weight in the 2 weeks before my surgery, or if I could lose some weight, that would be fine. Lost 5 lbs . My surgery and recovery was a breeze, honestly I've had more problems with a root canl than I ever did with the Lap Band. I started loosing right away, lost 50 lbs in the 1st 7 months ! Life has just gotten better and better ! Im healthier and happier than ive been in a looooong time ! I wish you well !!!

    Dr. Monk in york PA

My plan is having it done in York. I live in Dallastown and work in the York area. I cannot travel all over the place every 4-6 weeks. I'm guessing Dr.Monk's biggest concern is that I'm a recovering alcaholic. I decided GB was way more risky then LB regarding relapse. The Psych Doc and my Family Doc, felt very confident that I would be fine. I felt judged by him, due to of my past. I could have lied and never said a word. I hope and pray he does the surgery. I've gained sooooo much weight in the past year. Pretty face with a plus size body !
  12. Try not to rely on the scale....that is always a down fall. I have trained myself not to look at the scale more than twice a month,.,.,..it is really hard, but you always see a difference then and you learn the idea of loosing weight over time. I have lost 60 pounds since March 22, my surgery date, and 20 from the two weeks before surgery. I am close to goal and slowing on weight loss. I am learning to be happy with this progress. Feeling great! good luck

My first visit to the site

I have registered with this site after chatting with a fellow-bander in our doc's office while waiting for my first fill. She was banded a year ago and is now 3 months pregnant so she has to start unfilling. My first fill was easy but I don't feel any restrictions. I think I freaked out a little on the third time I had to drink the water because I really thought I was going to puke!!! My next fill is March 29 at 2:30. I hope its better next time. I like this site. It's a lot to go through but I find it very interesting!!:clap2: My weight at my first appt was 344. On my surgery date, it was 324. I am now at 284. I seem to be at a standstill. I can't get below 280.:help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help:
  14. G'day, all. I'm almost 6 weeks out, and the weight loss is going very well. I'm down 29# and about 2 sizes. My 18yo daughter is so excited for me, and so is my husband! She points out changes in my body, from "I can fit my arms around you to hug all of you now!" to "Your knees look different!" I am so blessed to have them behind me in this journey. Just a few negatives right now -- I still have to have a BIG nap (2+ hours) almost every day. I hope that improves soon. Also, just today, I'm having some nausea. I decided to go back to pureed food for a day to see if that helps, and it does a little bit. I'd love to hear from anyone else who has had exhaustion and/or nausea at 6 weeks . . . although overall this is SO worth it! Best of luck to everyone. This is not an easy journey, but by the grace of God, we'll all get through it!

    Who Are You Telling

Okay - I have a different point of view. Hopefully this does not make me ostracized. You do realize that each person chooses what is best for their own situation and circumstances, right? I didn't tell anyone other than my fiancé and three very close girlfriends. My mom did not know for three months and she lives less than a mile away. My dad still does not know, nor does most of the family. My daughter found out about a month after surgery when she came back from college for a visit and read paperwork I had left out accidentally. Last thing she needed was to worry about her mom while she was out of state and unable to support me. Her focus was to be elsewhere. Emotionally most of my my family & friends could not understand my need for WLS. Mom told me I just needed to "tape my mouth shut", easily said for a woman who has never worn over a size 4 her entire life. Others thought I should give conventional programs another shot. Yeah, like I had not tried repeatedly. How could I explain to them that "trying harder" was not the fix for me? I had VSG for me alone. With a BMI of 33+ I was obese but not obese enough to medically qualify for surgery. So, my weight loss was easily explained away with a initial liquid diet, eating differently with dramatic portion control, exercising more and I stopped eating out. Now my mom knows about. Yes, she was upset I did not tell her but agrees she would have been a barrier in that initial weight loss. Those who do not understand the struggles of being overweight simply could not understand my journey. Glad you all have an audience who accept WLS, I simply did not. I chose my support group wisely. I knew my audience and their levels of tolerance. VSG decision was too personal to share with mere co-workers or acquaintances. Would not change how I handled. It was perfect for me. Listen to your heart so you what is best for you.
  16. People who have NEVER had weight issues have no idea what a slippery slope it is. It starts with a few MORE pounds that what we are used to hauling around...which makes it harder and harder to do everyday things. Pretty soon it is easier to just NOT do things...and just sit...and eat...and sit...and eat...and fast forward a few years. I totally agree with Cookie..."There but by the grace of God, go I" Which is a scary scary thought!!
  17. I haven't read the comments because I know what people are capable of saying about obese people and I really don't want to fill my mind with more of that junk. I would bet that a lot of them have weight problems themselves and attack this man to make themselves feel better. Just like former_vbg said, they're just relieved it isn't them. I hope he gets the help he needs. Maybe that doctor from My 600lb Life can perform WLS.

    Please Help! Urgent

I agree with all the above. In addition, when you work out more than you are used to you will also gain more muscle and it might now show right away on the scales. Can you see the difference in your clothes? Have you lost any inches? If you are, everything else will catch up eventually. I know its frustrating.
  19. Bad thing is that nurse said I was so dehydrated she couldn't give me the vitamin iv therapy. So had to schedule hydrating iv therapy for tomorrow. Then I will be given the vitamins after. I was so shocked when I found out I lost so much weight in so little time. Before surgery I couldn't lose that amount in an entire year!! Surgery was painful afterwards yes but is Soooooooo worth it.

It would seem to be a case of what to you want. I don't love my hair sweaty either, but I do love losing weight.

    Already Getting Cold Feet

By the time I scheduled my surgery I couldn't diet if you paid me a million dollars. I joined WW with a friend as my last attempt before resorting to surgery. I didn't make it 3 weeks and I quit. I think I had truly hit some kind of emotional wall. I was just so OVER dieting. Don't get me wrong, I love food too and I still enjoy it, just much less of it. The band is successful with a huge percentage of people. You'll be amazed how much easier it is when you aren't fighting that hungry tiger all the time. Willpower is not the way to lose weight. That's like trying to push a rock up a hill, how long can you do it before it overtakes you. You need a permanent solution and lapband, IMHO, is the best thing going! Good luck and let us know how you are getting along. I'll be cheering for you!

    Getting discouraged, losing focus

Hey pretty lady! I haven't been sleeved yet, and they're not asking me to lose any weight beforehand (not yet anyway...), but I've been kinda trying on my own (again!) to lose a bit before the surgery. It can be difficult trying to keep yourself in check while making sure you're meeting all the requirements on someone else's "checklist." I'm certainly no expert, but cutting out carbs has totally helped. Maybe try to cut out the milk since it sounds like your stomach doesn't like it anyway....you can have cheese w your eggs and get calcium from there, or maybe even just take a few TUMS or Viactiv calcium chews each day to help with that? And I swear by crystal light. Hate water, but a little crystal light goes a long way. Good luck. Keep your head up!

    Getting discouraged, losing focus

Obviously listen to your doctors and specialists, but if you really need to drop the weight in order for a surgery date go on a liquid diet. Drastic times take drastic measures. A lot of people have had to do this to get on the calendar. Good luck.
  24. My wife had her bypass surgery on 17 March and I'm scheduled for 14 April. My wife is doing well post-op, went back to work today. I think her weight loss since the pre-op diet is around 33 pounds. Her biggest complaint was the constipation. She did better than I'm doing with the pre-op diet. Our Dr. has us on a total liquid diet for 2 weeks. I'm sticking to it and have lost 12 pounds in 6 days, but man is it tough. My wife was near as moody and irritable as I've been. I've had a couple of good days, but more bad days it seems. At least I'm seeing some progress now, so that's making it a bit easier. Really glad we're going on this journey together as I believe it will help us succeed. It'll make meal planning much easier and we can keep each other in line. I'm really ready to get this surgery behind me though. It's been great to read all the stories and advice on here. Thanks for sharing and good luck in your journies.

    Lap band weight pecentages

I think if I gave the % a lot of thought, I would have never had been banded. I knew I could do this, and not losing what *I* wanted to lose never crossed my mind. I ended up losing over 110% of my excess weight.
