Here's what I wrote to Dr. Oz: I watched your show on the Lapband procedure. I am two years out, had my lapband in January, 2009. I lost 106 pounds (reach goal) in 11 months and have maintained that weight loss since December, 2009. I enjoyed the show until you had the food segment. It is a grossly incorrect representation of how lap band patients eat on a daily basis. First of all, we eat Protein -- at least 70 to 80 oz. per day. The rules of lapband (which you NEVER mentioned) are protein FIRST, drink 64 oz. of Water daily, exercise and no snacking!!! You even showed foods as "snacks" which is clearly breaking a lap band rule!! The lifestyle changes include all of the rules mentioned above plus limiting carbinated beverages, limiting carbs, and limiting alcohol intake as well as learning to eat slowly, small meals (we use small plates and bowls to help our minds adjust to new portion sizes) we exercise. That's how the tool works -- not the way it was represented on your show. I belong to Lap Band Talk -- there's a group of us who have been meeting on one thread for three years -- most of us are seasoned, are at goal and follow the rules and have for several years. There's also an expert on bariatric surgery by the name of Kaye Bailey who has a very helpful website -- google 5 day pouch test and you will find her site -- she's devoted her life the past few years to bariatric surgery patients and is a successful patient of bariatric surgery herself. Here's a sample of what I eat every day: Breakfast -- green yogurt with strawberries and blueberries lunch - 1 egg omelet with turkey sausage, onions and peppers and sometimes sliced green olives and a wedge of laughing cow cheese. dinner -baby spring greens with onions, tomatoes, another wedge of laughing cow cheese and 4 to 5 oz. of grilled chicken breast tossed with Kraft low fat sesame/ginger dressing. I work 8 to 5 but don't have a lunch hour until 1:00 p.m. so I usually have a snack of PB2 (powdered peanut butter) with some celery sticks mid morning. In the afternoon or evening I snack on sugar free popsicles and to cure any sweet tooth or hunger I make sugar free fat free pudding with a scoop of Protein powder added in. I make it with fat free milk and portion it out. I exercise every day -- 60 mins. of cardio and 3 times a week I do weight machines although I have to be careful because of neck and back problems. I've lost thousands of pounds in my life, but never learned how to eat until I had lap band surgery and found my on line support group at Lapband talk. Support group is necessary for accountability - those who belong to a support group and sign in every day and hold ourselves accountable are the ones who are succeeding. Feel free to check our group out -- www.lapbandtalk.com -- go to "mentors" forum and then find "I'm here to help" -- that is our group that's been together for years - we actually travel once or twice a year to get together personally - we've all become good friends and go through our journeys together - keeping each other motivated. That is what life with lap band is like - not how it was portrayed on your show. Any of us would be happy to discuss this further with you or any one from your staff. Feel free to contact me any time. We love you Dr. Oz, but you need to get this information correct - it's too important. Hope none of you minded that I invited him to snoop on our thread!

Hi y'all~ During the first few months did any of you get ditsy? (more ditsy in some of your cases..LOL) I am finding myself forgetting things... or missing appointments that I would normally never do! I think it is the low calories and my body needs all the calories to just get through the day and doesn't share any with the brain! ; ) I completed my 12 sessions with my YMCA trainer and now have decided to switch it up a bit. The hospital where I had my surgery has a wellness center... and part of the "deal" of having bariatric surgery there is you get 3 months free at the gym. I decided to go check it out yesterday. I had NO idea it meant 3 months of 3 times a week of personal training by an EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGIST! OMG I am so excited! That's like $1500 gift that fell into my lap. (Or for the ditsy me.. $1500 that I found while cleaning my house... and just didn't know where I put it!) I have to drive 25 min to get there but it's a nice time to listen to some good music or catch up on the phone. It's just a bit more ME time. I also find that I get in a bottle of Water going and coming home! win/win! I will let you guys know how it goes. I was sooooooooooo hungry yesterday. Had the HIGHEST calories since my surgery! 1300! BF: Healthwise Cereal (15g prot/90 cal) Milk 1% 4oz (50cal) banana (1/2 med, 50) Snack: Muscle Milk 14 oz. (160cal/20gm prot) Lunch: Black Bean salad with 1/2 avocado, olive oil, tomatoes, onions, 1/2 c blackbeans Snack: Yoplait yogurt (100cal) Dinner: Amy's Veggie Shepherd's pie (150cal) Snack: Healthwise Protein bar (170cal) Breaskstone's Cottage cheese 90 cal Yoplait yogurt 100 cal ***Notice I still cannot get in hard Proteins. Perhaps that is why I am so hungry??? I realize what I did. (get it.. realize, i have a realize band!) anyway.. I had TWO Meal Replacement protein supplements... and didn't replace any MEALS! I was just so hungry and had a big workout and just felt that protein would "hold" me better than eating "junk". It just sucks how much it all adds up! And I was up late last night... hubby on call... and American Idol and Dancing finales. I need to start going to bed early and stop watching tv and have my DH quit taking call. We can move out of our house and camp! : ) Nelson came home early yesterday with low fever and had vomited at school. He was FINE yesterday and last night. This morning before sending him he has a 99.8. He is a little punky and don't have the heart to send him to school. Feeling guilty though because I have a workout scheduled and I am NOT taking myself off the list today.. since DH is postcall and OFF today. (albeit sleepy).

Good afternoon. Busy day for me today. On Wed. I have been volunteering at the hospital in the bariatric program so went and did that this morning. The fill nurse came by to teach a pre op class (she usually is not there on Wed. mornings), I told her I had an appt tomorrow with her for a fill and she told me to come over with her after the class to the office and we'd do it today so I wouldn't have to drive in again. That was great! I got a .5 cc of a fill. So far so good. I get mushies for dinner so am going out for some beans. She felt that since I lost 20 lbs since the last fill that I probably needed it. I explained how I had felt I did then went on vacation on PB'd 3 times. She felt that was due to stress, not being as careful for the first one and that the 2nd two PB's were because I was irritated from the first one. (they all happened within 24 hours of each other). Water went down fine, will see about dinner. Some of my labs were back and I am low on vitamin B1 so need to go get some of that to take, and have it rechecked in 3 mos. Oh and I think I have a job. They want to know if I can start on Monday so that sounds pretty sure. It's for 2 to 2 1/2 hours a day from 6am to 8 or 830 at the rec center in my neighborhood. Now I will have no excuse to not workout as I can take my clothes and do it there before coming home. It seems tough to get up that early for only 2 hours but it will be an extra $100 or so a week and I can stash that and save up for a new wardrobe, trips, etc. It will be our 'blow' money. I talk to him aobut the job tomorrow.

its normal this slowing down after couple of weeks thing..seems like we all do it!..its bit disheartening after a good start though!..wendy is right you should not be calorie counting, cos to be long term succesfull its all about portion size..so dont bother with diet stuff cos it will send your body into "fasting mode" where your metabolism slows down if you are taking in too few calories and nutrients...also..if we are just gonna calorie count..then what use is it having the band?!.i am now virtually eating the same as before, but half the portions..cos i cant manage any more, and thats with no fill..and i have found out the things that hurt like bread and chips, so dont want them now...that is how the band works..if you just have liquids (apart from the initial few weeks and for 2 days after fill).then there is no point in having the fill really cos it can be at its very tightest and you will still be able to have liquids..then you might get into trouble big time if something gets stuck when you do try something more solid, like you do have to to get the advantage of the band, so they dont like to do fills until you are on solids...i have a very good book wrote by a top bariatric surgeon, it didnt make sense before i had the band but i keep refering to it now and it does. his patients are very successfull too. so i am reading up on it!..didnt you buy that book also TC?. gillian x -

Thanks for all the lovely welcoming messages everyone, it's great not to feel so alone on this big adventure. Welcome Starsky - who knows we may meet if you go for 8th Septmber with me! Anyone else out there going for that date? I'm up to page 116 with the forum reading plus a few of the most recent, gosh, there's so much knowledge out there, we could write a book!! OK, I've booked, bought my baggy trousers, meltlets, motilium, papaya, dressings and cuppasoup, paid my deposit, renewed my passport and booked holiday leave. Started a low fat diet and trying to practise chewing - when I remember. Now what???? There's still 7 weeks to go. I Can't wait!!! I even sneaked in a consultation with the professor of a UK banding company to check he thought it would be all ok (Yes it would, for only Β£7995!) Keep up all the good work everyone, and thanks once again SP -

I was supposed to go tomorrow to get my first fill but I saw amy ENT today to have him look at my clogged ears and I have adouble ear infection and an infected gland - he thinks it is a salivary gland. Interestingly enough, it is the side I had a filling replaced and a temporary crown done on last thursday. I am on antibiotics and steriods so I talked to the bariatric coordinator and we agreed to put it off a week. Today I was hungrier than any day so far. I hope that does not increase a lot before next Wednesday. I am trying to stick to lean proteins and low carb veggies and one fruit per day. It helps to avoid carbs.

Hi~ BTW, I didn't know you could call it TOM. My first real boyfriend was named Tom...LOL. My skin has been getting dry the last 6 months or so, more now after WLS. ONE MORE lb down today! I went in for fill #4. I told them everything and then my doc said... let's try 1cc and see. This is the FIRST fill that was quick and easy and painless! The others I had that darn seroma that needed to be drained and then due to scar tissue, he would have a hard time finding the port. Today he said due to the weight loss and exercise that he could feel it much more easily! They gave me a small cup of Water (maybe 60cc) and he wanted me to try to drink it in one gulp, like a shot of tequila. It went down, but I had a twinge of Iron fist/golf ball sensation. I rated it a 1/10. He then had me do another "shot". This time I actually had a tiny bit of a feeling of salivating. He told me he wanted to take 0.5cc out and I felt so possessive of my 0.5cc! I didn't want to give it to him! But then he explained that later I might have swelling and not be able to get anything down. Also said, that later he might have to take more out... so I gave in. I am on liquids today so I can't really tell. He said he thinks in two weeks he will put another .5cc in and that it might be VERY close to my sweet spot. I also found out that my surgeon made a deal with the hospital Wellness Center (staffed by exercise physiologists), that any of his patients get 3 months FREE membership, including personal training 3 times a week! I am paying $40 a session at the Y, so of course I JUMPED on this! I will give it a try on Monday. I have to drive about 20 min, but for FREE training by a more TRAINED person, seems like it might be worth it. Also, she is VERY familiar with bariatric patients. I want to wait and see if I like it before I tell my trainer here. I feel like I am cheating on her! kath17268~ Welcome and CONGRATS! Sorry about the tooth! OUCH! I felt the same way about TBL finale. Charlene K~ Glad to hear you got your unfill. I was afraid of really being too tight, so opted for it before I left the office. ok guys... DH is on call tonight, so I have an active 5 year old wanting some attention! TTYL! peasout~ Laura

Hey all sorry been a way for a while I wanted to focus on me. I started doing the liquid thing like Charlene. Since I really put in effort for about a little over a week I have lost 3 lbs not to bad. I had a wild movie and dinner night last night with friends and went a little crazy with Mexican and 1 margarita but it was good. Back to normal today. I went to Bariatric Choice and Bariatric Advantage and got some soups, shakes, bars and pudding all high protein and very tasty. Anyways hi to all.

Good morning, Lovelies!! Could not sleep til after 230am last night again. not sure why other than I think I messed up on my pain pills and took an extra pill too soon when I went to bed as I had that la la do do do feeling in my head. LOL I got up and played Suduko and finally beat Phyl at a game! She's good! Today I am taking Grandma to lunch with my friend Joye that I worked with and her mother. Her mother just moved into the same assisted living place as Grandma and knows no on so it's to introduce them. Then am taking Grandma to a LaZBoy store to look at one of those recliners that lifts you out of it. DH left for ATL today and am hoping he hears more about this possible move. I hate it looming over us. It makes making decisions tough so right now I am operating in the we are not moving mode. I couldn't decide if I should even pursue this possible very part time job at the hospital but I'd hate to pass it by and hten we don't move. It's in the bariatric dept and everything. This possible job is my only hitch I think right now in coming to FL. If I get the job, depends on when it starts and then I have to tell them I need off then for that trip and then 10 days for my Isreal trip 2 weeks later. Kindda dicey. Tried to put on my new jeans my DS got me for Christmas today, dang it the knee is still too swollen, I can hardly bend it in these jeans. They fit otherwise. I am just starting to be able to wear normal pants but they have to be very wide legged. I'm tired of sweat type pants, I've been dressing the top half up and wearing those. LOL Arelene, sure you couldn't come? FL is very close to TX and don't you have a daughter or something that can check on mom for you, you could be back in TX awfully fast. Or could DH check on her for you? Apples, congrats on being the 500 page starter! LOL I am so jealous. LOL I agree about 2's seeming easy in retrospect, I think the 20's are worse. LOL No control and they make bigger mistakes. LOL Am happy to see DD to settle down now if only DS would. Laura, I hope you can figure out how to post that pic, it sounds neat what you made

Sharon - Yep laundry is so much fun - I am going to need to do a load tonite.. Snacks - I save mine for nites - it's usually popcorn - sf pudding - even a bite or 2 of chicken - I always have a rostiser (sp) chicken in my fridge - If I am starving I will have a bite or 2 of chicken - and I did have some Protein snacks I got from bariatic choice - they look like cheero's but they are like cheese puffs sour cream & chive - 130 cal and 12 or 15 grms of pt.. I need to order some more I liked them - I had some taco ones from them too - they were ok- also you get 24 chips (bite size tostedos) for like 140 cal - I will have those on the weekend with some salsa... Bariatric Choice also has these great Cookies - Peanut Butter & choc - 150 cal 12 or 15 grms pt and they are big and filling - I have both and I ususally eat them before a work out.. Hows your daughter doing - How are you adjusting to being the grandma :0) Melissa I ate 800 cal one day then next day 1000 then next day 900 then maybe 1100 one day then 1200 on day - I varied my calories 800 isn't that low - Here's all the food that you can eat 100 to 150 for bf (Egg Beater omellet 60 cal with a little ham 50 cal and a piece of cheese 45) 150 to 200 for lunch (3 oz of tuna 80 cal - 25 for mayo - 2 wasa cracker 60 - lettuce free) 250 to 300 for dinner (4 oz fish 150 - 1/2 c rice 120 - Veggies 50) 100 to 150 for snacks (Popcorn & Pudding) Plus I exercised 4-5 days a week during my weight lost phase.. I am a volume eater still - I want the most food I can get for the least amount of calories - I rather have a salad that has 300 calories than 2 cookies or I rather have 3 bags of snack pack popcorn (well I don't know if I could eat 3 - but know I can eat 2) As you lose weight - it takes less carlories to maintain that weight at 250 it takes 3500 a day to keep that weight - well now my calories are between 1500 - 1900 now to maintain 138-143 and I go to the gym 3-4 days a week - if I didn't go to the gym hell I could only eat 1000 cal a day to maintain my weight..

Airplane food .... Halibut on some spinach pasta (Halibut was delicious! Totally shocking, lol!) I swear I know this is a Bariatric food forum, not Flyertalk . But when traveling, I rarely eat alone except at the airport or on the plane. Not like I can really take pics at a business dinner. And at home I only serve what I know I can eat, so I have no after pics. -

Yes, it yields a lot of servings. I made mine in two layers using 9 inch springform pans. I had I think 6 leftover slices after 4 people ate a serving. At that size, bariatric wise, ai could only have half a piece. Here's the cake before it was cut. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app -

Hi everyone---scan is done, and I did not throw up on anyone!!! Laura, I tried to figure out what was wrong with your DH---but I believe what he has is likely a combination of his current problem, and the fact that he has testicles---and he is therefore---full of shit! Sorry---it was too easy to pass up!!!! Hope they figure out what is wrong with him soon, it sounds painful! Keep an eye on him! Not all appendix present normally! Michelle, 25 minutes on the elliptical is great! My program I am doing on it is 20, so I do it and am done, unless I am involved!!! I listen to books while I walk---and only then. I am not allowed to listen at all unless I am exercising. So sometimes, I even make myself go further to hear something that is going on!!! I have a CD player hooked up to mine, and I check books out of the library for it, I have "I've got a Secret" by Sophie Kinsella now, I bought it at a yard sale!!! OK, now sit back and laugh at me for a few minutes!! 4 years ago when I went to renew my license it was flagged, the computer said I have a hold on it in Tennessee. Interesting, considering I have never been to TN. Seems all the computer goes by in this case is name and birthdate--and it flagged. So I called the 800# to TN Dept. of transportation & safety. Talk to a dozen people, finally get this guy who is like normal to talk to, and he is kind of laughing, he ask for my description---saying everytime he asks that he feels like he is on a chat line! Anyway, he took the last 4 of my SS# and said they did not match, and that anyone in his Dept. should have realized the problem, because the other woman had a D in front of her SS# on their MVD records. Apparently in TN they flag all deceased persons licenses etc, for a year to help with identity fraud. So he faxed the paperwork to my local MVD office explaining that I was NOT the 5'3'' 123 pound DEAD, BLACK woman they were flagged on there!!!! No indeed I am not. So I finally got my license. So, today, following my scan I go in to renew my license again....only to be told I have to go through a security clearance, as she is explaining this to me, my head is swimming! With the new homeland security fiasco, anyone who has ever had a flagged license or is obtaining a CDL etc. has to have clearance. I had to go to the Police Dept. and have an NCIC check run on myself. Then the officer had to hand deliver the paperwork showing I am not a wanted woman in the USofA. BUT.....the paper shows I can get my license...but I am still in the system as a PTTS. So he says I might want to look into clearing it up, because I cannot obtain a CDL, or a passport...I am not allowed on international flights now... and could be held at any border at any time. I am flabbergasted and asking why? He says it does not say---only that I am a PTTS. What the hell is that I ask....are ya ready my friends? I am a Possible Threat To Society!!!!! He said it is likely tied to the other "me" in TN, when she died she had both local and federal warrants. I ask this man, our esteemed Chief of Police, who do I see? How do I go about clearing this? There is a high liklihood of me traveling out of the country! He has no idea........aaarrgghhh I love incompetancy!!! By the time I left there, (yes I did get my license renewed, did it for 8 years this time) I was very likely a threat to several people. I need to be making calls, but wonder where the hell to call??? Guess I will start with our state office of the MVD...have to begin the run around somewhere!!! So, I am off to mow the lawn. Will check in with all of you later!! Kat -

Soft Proteins, yes. I used my own recipe. 2 eggs 15oz part skim ricotta 1/4 cup grated parmesan 1tsp ground garlic 1tsp black pepper Dash of basil 1tsp Italian seasoning 1tsp salt Mix all these well. Spoon 1 to 2 teaspoons into each spot on a mini muffin baking pan that youβve sprayed with Pam. Sprinkle a touch of reduced fat mozzarella on top of each. Bake 20 minutes at 375. Iβm thinking of making a bariatric cooking/recipe blog. I love cooking and being inventive and really want to stay within my approved foods. So it may be neat! -

My doc is the least restrictive in this.......... I had coffee before I even checked out of the hospital after surgery and he gives his patients back DIET soda after the 1 month appointment. He said that he hasn't seen any evidence of pouch dilation with carbonated beverages and thinks that it was mainly a rule geared toward RNY patients. His bariatric coordinator (and also his very first band patient) proudly shakes her dt. coke/dt. dr pepper glass at any who ask her about it) She was banded in 2001 and has lupus and as a result has been completely unfilled, loosely filled and now back to being regularly filled in the time I first started the process. (She is in size 10/12) I do have it but not daily like I used to. -

This creamy tortellini, spinach, and chicken soup is a very popular recipe for both the Instant Pot and Crock-Pot. Since I'm not eating pasta, I made it without the tortellini and added extra chicken and spinach to make up for the lack of tortellini. It's good, but not mind-blowing (to be fair, maybe it would be with the tortellini). My 5-ounce serving: This was also a perfect time to try out my new Souper Cubes. I've seen several people in the bariatric community recommend these. They are pricey (a set of two 4-ounce trays is $36.99), but I splurged because people say this brand is much better in quality than the cheaper ones. They do feel very sturdy and heavy-duty, and it's easy to pop the frozen cubes out of the trays. I can fit 5 of these cubes in a quart-sized Ziploc bag. I usually use these glass containers (which I love and highly recommend), but the cubes in a bag are a lot more compact, and I'm not limited by the number of containers I have. I will definitely get a lot of use out of these and probably buy some of the other sizes, too! -

The curied salmon pate was prepped like tuna or chicken salad, so nothing was fried for that recipe BUT You may be surprised to find that different bariatric plans (under different bariatric team supervision) allow for different food standards. Also individual tolerance will account for what can/can't be eaten. On my plan and with my tolerance, I can have some fried foods. I for a long time I have stuck with pan, oven & convection fried vs deep fried as matter of preference because I rather not waste oil for no added value. I'm sure many others like @sillykitty @summerset @MarvelGirl25 @ms.sss @Sophie7713 @Cheeseburgh will be able to give you their perspectives too β€οΈ -
