    Bad breath! Please help

Yes, ketosis is fundamentally a result of one's diet being low in carbohydrates; it really isn't a result of losing weight as the OP's doc suggested - as you suggest, one can happily lose weight without the side effects by increasing carb intake. I never had any particular problem with these symptoms, but kept my diet relatively balanced (within our minimum protein requirements and calorie limits). When my wife was going through this, she occasionally experienced these symptoms though she wasn't specifically on a low carb diet but occasional variations in her diet would drop her below her symptomatic threshold.

    Weight gain after exercise

I have trainer friends who say this is normal - when you strain your muscles, your body retains water to help repair them. I've noticed the same thing myself! But everyone says that over the course of several days you will have a bigger net loss. It's just the day after that you pick up some water weight. I feel your pain though -- even though people tell me about the science of this, I hate it and have trouble believing in the net loss!

    Hello! I'm new here

My doctor sent a referral for the weight loss clinic at Brighams so I am waiting for the call to schedule the information session. Funny enough, I used to work at Tufts! They are a great hospital! I'm fortunate to have options. I am open to suggestions so if there is a better route I will definitely consider it!

I like the "good weight fairy" answer. If I give you my address will you send her my way when your done with her? lol
  7. Rebecca, don't despair. Luscious is right, your "blues" could very well be due to the anesthesia. I have had a few surgeries for various things through the years and I have a reaction like this every single time to general anesthesia. The first time it happened it worried me and everyone around me because it caused an abrupt change in my personality, but I was back to normal within a week. Drink as much Water as you can to help flush those powerful drugs out of your system, and if it at all possible, do some light exercise, like walking. Congrats on being banded!!! This Band is an amazing thing and trust me, it won't be long before you too will be a success story!:smile::crying: Crazy Ates April Exercise Challenge 17/30 Exercise Sessions (10 Cardio, 6 Core Strength and Flexibility, 1 Weight Training) Banded 8/07/07 Dr. Miguel Zapata, Monterrey Mexico

Whats to young for bariatract surgery

From a clinical point of view, your friend must consult with paediatric specialists because there is no blanket answer without the medical and psychological condition of the child being extensively factored into the decision. Pediatric cases involving weight loss surgery are very complex and I don't think strangers of the internets should be sources of advice for this. This is my own opinion as a clinician. Others may have different opinions.
  10. I'm so glad to have found this forum! I was banded 5/19/2007. I am going in for my fourth fill tomorrow. (First two fills essentially resulted in no saline in the band. With an initial fill of 2.0cc and a second fill of 4.0cc in a 9.75 Inamed band, I wound up with 0.6cc. My surgeon did a fluro, fill to 2.6cc and checked the following day. No leakage noted. I still feel restriction 7-8 weeks later.) I'm a bit discouraged since I've lost approximately 37 lbs total including the pre-op diet that I followed for 4 weeks prior to surgery. Most of the weight loss was during the pre-op and liquid phases following surgery. Mostly I'm working to maintain the loss and fluctuate around a 4-6 lb range. I have been tracking calories and trying to keep to around 1200 per day with 25% Protein, 25% fat (max), and 50% carbs. I haven't been exercising at all. (Beginning BMI was 52.) I've noticed that even though I am noticing restriction early in the day or at the beginning of a meal, once I am able to get things down I can eat quite a lot. I'm not sure what 'packing the pouch' is, but is that what I'm doing when I eat a sizable amount? It is weird because sometimes I am PBing, though that usually only happens now when I'm not paying attention to how much or how fast I'm eating and don't chew thoroughly. If I do PB, I stop eating and then drink warm liquids a few hours afterwards to sooth my stoma. From reading other posts, it looks like I need to (1) keep on top of fills to achieve good restriction, (2) track my food intake until I hit the 'sweet spot' and feel full, and (3) begin exercising. Does anyone out there have anything else they can suggest or recommend?

    What is your exercise routine?

i work out with a personal trainer on tuesday & thursdays, mostly weight / resistance / core training with him. i "try" to add an additional 3-4 days of cardio training & a yoga class (now addicted to wii yoga) each wk. my avg seems to be 5-6 days a wk exercising - i definitely give myself a day off to recoup. good luck to you!!!
  12. I was in the process of all the prelim things you need prior to the sleeve then Hurricane Sandy hit and the hospital that I was doing this in NYU was hit hard . The hospital I work at went under water and I'm still not back to work. I have my husbands insurance at least so that's not a problem . I just feel like I'm hitting walls ( I went for EGD and I have an ulcer and Hiatal Hernia . I've been very down because I have to wait at least 10 weeks on medication until I have another EGD to see if it clears up . So I'm probably looking at July for surgery 9 months later then I thought I would have it and steadily gained more weight because if the stress issues I'm going this Friday to see the surgeon again to see when we can finally get the ball rolling on this . I pray it's sooner than later !!

Is there really a "sweet spot"

wvgal, good for you for taking the initiative to get in control of your band! it is one thing to have surgery, but completely another to use it to it's full advantage. i really hope you like using thedailyplate.com and continue to use it. i find it is the only way i keep myself accountable for what i eat, and i have been using it daily since last march or so. i love it! i swear i'm on that site 10X a day writing down everything that goes through my digestive tract. knowing that i tend to stop eating once i am a little over my calorie cap for the day, i put it on the highest settings saying the amount i need to consume to lose 3 lbs a week. well, over the past 7 weeks since surgery i have lost an average of 2 pounds a week, so it's right! the only problem i see for you is that the daily plate only gives a cap for the # of cals you should eat for your body, and not a minimum. not enough calories can slow your weight loss, and eating only one meal realllly slows down your metabolism. hopefully you will get past your "diet" fix and find a healthier way to lose weight--- and lose weight you will. good luck with everything!!
  14. @cristina.banks , I am in a situation similar to you. Although I am considered very obese at 225 pounds, there are people at my surgeons office who clearly have a lot more weight to lose than I do. Did you have any difficulty getting your surgery approved through your insurance? I'm still terrified that I'm going to be denied. I'm afraid that they're going to say"you are not obese enough". I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and have been using a CPAP machine for a month now. My surgery is already scheduled for one month from today but I'm still in the preapproval process with my bariatric office.

    Positive thinking!

I came across some positive sayings that is helping me with my journey, in the process to get banded late july, see the doc and dietician july 2. "RULE YOUR MIND OR IT WILL RULE YOU" "ITS NOT WHETHER YOU GET KNOCKED DOWN, ITS WHETHER YOU GET UP"-vince lombardi "INSTEAD OF GIVING MYSELF REASON WHY I CANT, I GIVE MYSELF REASON I CAN" just some quotes that i tell myself that help get through the day, this world likes to drag you down, be overweight exct.. with all the food ads, fast food chains, doughnut shops, pizza ;all about the money and they dont care what happens to you. I am 6-3 355 and had enough how i feel, I am ready to make change and live healthy for myself and family. Every man on here that has lost weight is in inspiration to me, because i know it can be a struggle and you all are great examples that it can be done. The best of luck with your journeys and will be right behind you. Coondawg
  16. :0) I am very very tired and sore. I slept a lot yesterday. Everything from walking to shifting positions etc is taxing. Going upstairs makes me dizzy. Hungry a lot. Gas pain finally subsiding. Another thing- get the gas x chewables or the strips. Worth it's weight in gold. Harder than I thought it would be but I'm hanging in.... Can't wait to eat again.

    Behaviors leading up to surgery

I'm scheduled for surgery next month as well, and while I haven't necessarily noticed an increase in appetite leading up to the liquids, I did notice it right after I made the decision to have the surgery. It was all head hunger for me, though. Right after I made the decision my habits ramped up for the worse, and I probably gained 8 - 10 lbs. I've got that back under control however, and lost the weight I gained and a smidge more.

    Down To The Wire...

So...I had my final visit with my surgeon yesterday. I couldn't maintain the 10 lbs weight-loss I had and my abdominal ultrasound revealed a fatty liver so I have one week of a liquid diet starting the 23rd...not plzd but i look forward to the pre-op loss. I'm scared of arriving to the hospital late so I've booked a room at a local hospital to hang out the night b4. This way my husband can go back to the hotel and have Breakfast while waiting for me to come out of recovery. I'm going to miss my little girls for the few nights I'll be in the hospital.
  19. I'm a bander, but yes, hunger returns. However the satiety with smaller amounts is still there. It's up to me to still stop. We formerly fat humans tend to push the boundaries after the initial high of extreme weight loss is behind us. They tell us over and over and over again that this is only a tool. Well it's true. And that's what it means. Keeping it off is up to us. It IS easier than it was without surgery, but it is not without sacrifice. You can do it. I can do it. So let's do it!
  20. Hi everyone. I was banded on November 6 and everything went off without a hitch. I went home that night, took the weekend to recuperate, and was back at work on Monday. I haven't had any gas or any real pain or nausea or vomiting, although I have been a little constipated. However, I don't feel any real restriction when I eat or drink. Is that normal? I ate a whole can of fat free refried beans last night, which I know can't be good, but I was hungry and it didn't hurt so I kept going (which of course I regretted after). I'm eating all pureed and mushy food right now after 10 days of liquids and thin soups (which I stuck to for the most part, although not perfectly). I lost 12 pounds via my preop diet and I've lost only 2 pounds since then. Is this normal? Is it possible I've stretched the pouch by accident? Or do I just need to wait until my first band fill to really get what this whole experience will be like? My starting weight was 212, I'm at 198 now, and I'd like to be 135. I'm a female, 38 years old, 5'6. Just curious if anyone has an opinion about why I'm feeling so little restriction? I'm feeling like I'm going to have to really 'diet' still to get where I want to go and feel a little disappointed so far.
  21. My insureance required me to have documentation for the last 3 years that I was at 35 BMI or over with at least 1 comormid disease. So make sure your not required to do that before you gain 10 pounds!

Well, you need to find a supportive shrink. GERD is 20% in the normal population and 10% in sleevers. Don't stress about it. Even if it is going to happen to you, worrying about it won't stop it, it will just make the situation worse. Focus on losing weight and being healthy. When people look at complication data, they forget that a lot of people were in terrible general health before they ever had surgery. So since we have started down this path... I'm looking at their blog http://suethsayings.blogspot.com/ This is what they have to say about the sleeve... Really? because it is 5:30 PM and I have had 2 eggs, bacon, 32 ounces of coffee 32 ounces of iced tea, 32 ounce of water, and 12 ounces of pork. My sleeve holds a lot. I'm about to suck down 100 grams (2 cups) of spinach. I still have 2 hours left to eat and I plan on doing some damage, LOL They are completely ignoring ghrelin, but from the entire tone of their blog, they don't even research actual studies or science about surgery, claiming there is zero research. @Deactivatedfatgal The person running that site and blog is bitter and deranged. I had a friend from college, that had RNY back in the early 2000s. She had complications and ended up on a feeding tube. That sounds like a tragic story right? The part left out is 2 days after she was home she was drinking Coke (not even diet) and eating KFC (just a pinch to see if I can tolerate it she said). Her complications were brought on by herself. Not to mention she was not heavy enough to qualify for surgery and wore ankle and arm weights under her clothes to make her BMI high enough, Lots of people are not good cadidates for surgery but they don't tell that part of the story. You can notice even around here when people say they regained, they NEVER tell exactly what they were eating and in what amounts. They keep it vague and say they were eating bad. If you were tracking their food and looking at their binges in print, they would be less likely to do that, but that isn't what happens. So when people tell their WLS tales of woe, remember that there is more to the story.
  23. Well my sleeve surgery is rescheduled for June 21st! My GYN said it is okay to wait on the hysterectomy. The uterus does have to come out but it is not going to get worse over the next 6 months and the hysterectomy will actually be easier when I have lost weight. I am staying on the iron pills to get and keep my RBC's up and as long as they stay up I am good for my June 21st sleeve!

    weight/resistance training

My opinion. Minimally you should get all your muscles twice a week, three times max. Three sets of 15 what ever you are doing...and you should be fatigued by the end of the third set. If it's too light then add more weight. You need to bust your butt to really grow muscles like body builders, don't worry about over doing it. There are all kinds of ways you can hit your muscles groups and ways to rest between sets. Google it. Good luck. Also, if you want to really to knock yourself out look up Crossfit. It's cardio and strength training at the same time. There's lots of jumping and crazy stuff, but it's a great time saver.

    Stopped losing again!

I have had constant stalls from day one! Some last as long as six weeks. Most times I still lose inches. The most important thing you can do is follow your plan....do not compare yourself to everyone else......we are all different. I recently started gaining....got so depressed and upset....thought her I go again and another failled attempt.....went to the doctor and my thyroid was way off. I have had to learn....I am older...I have different health needs....I will get there...it just may be at a slower rate.
