    Protein intake?

I was banded 9-28-09 and didn't eat enough protein, ate too many carbs, I was literally fighting my band. In the past 7 weeks after my last fill I have lost 16 lbs. It took me that long to get my act together and make the band my friend. I am now at 9 cc's in a 10cc band. I still haven't hit my "sweet spot" everyone talks about and I am hoping with my next fill in 1 week that I will get to experience it. I keep my protein around 60-100 a day and carbs under 30. I exercise at least an hour with cardio and weights 5 nights a week. So I am finally on track and can't wait to lose the extra weight, I already feel better. Best of luck to you and welcome to the band world. If you need a band buddy just contact me. robertsgal@yahoo.com

    Black drainage

Not really a question but I did want to share my experience. After surgery I was definitely swollen on the side of my stomach where my port had been from my previous lap band. After about a week or so I started walking outside quite a bit and decided to just get in the pool to cool off. No swimming, just get in, cool off, and get out. When I got out I noticed that I had black stuff oozing from my largest incision site. Over the course of about 5 days I oozed quite a bit of black blood and filled several paper towels and gauze Patches. I talked to my doctor's office and they wanted me to let it ooze as much as it wanted. It was not puss and it didn't smell so they didn't seem overly concerned with it. Now all of my swelling is down and the incision has stopped oozing. It was a little freaky at first to be sitting with a wad of paper towels against your stomach and realize they are filled with black blood. I wanted to share my story in case it happens to anyone else. Everything seems fine now and I feel better.

    Pre Op diet help!

Hey do either of you guys no of a shake that can replace optifast. I have to loose a good amount of weight before they will schedule my surgery and I can't afford optifast, which they recommended 2-4weeks of or how ever long it take me to loose this weight. I know I need a VERY LOW CALORIE meal replacement shake. I prefer to buy it at a store and not online but everything I've looked at have higher calories and carbs. I don't know what the right amount of protein I need verses calories and carbs. I start my classes in a week or so but want to get started now to get a jump start.

    Pre Op diet help!

I'm so not looking forward to this pre-op diet!!!!! I'm not a fan of protein shakes but that's what I'll be having for 2 weeks straight!!! Please keep us posted on your progress!!
  5. Oh man...I start my 2 week liquid diet tomorrow, and I am already an unhappy camper!! I just keep trying to tell myself "mind over matter" but I happen to have quite a great amount of "matter" that is screaming "EAT SOME FREAKIN' PIZZA!!!!!!!" Any advice or suggestions are welcome!!!!
  6. Ladies, I volunteer! I don't know how good I'll be, but my surgery date was May 13, 2013 and I'm an email junkie I have lost 55 lbs since surgery. I have my weigh in numbers from the 2, 4, and 6 week check-ins at the doctor. But I want to tell you, like you'll hear until you want to scream, everyone is different. We had major surgery! They yanked out part of our body! You're healing! Follow your doctor's advice about your diet phases (they sound slightly different than mine), and put the scale away! Only weigh once a week. Remember that as you heal you're only getting in a minimum number of calories just because of swelling and stuff. So you lose a lot, and then your body starts hoarding everything, and then you adjust and start losing again. So it's a bit wonky at first. The weight will come off. It has to! Our surgeon's office had a In-Body body composition scale, and it could spit out what your resting metabolic rate is, which is how many calories it takes for your body to function. So, at my pre-op weight of 268 and 5'10" tall, my resting rate was 2100 calories. At my 3 month appointment (around 220 lbs, I think), It was still around 1800-2000 calories. (my numbers are at home) So since I'm only getting around 1000-1200 calories a day, I'm losing weight. It's not fast, but it's still losing. And I say it's not fast, but I'm apparantly still on "bypass rate" in terms of my average weight loss. I did lose a lot pre-op, which put me in good shape for post-op recovery and getting back to the gym. But don't rush going back to the gym. Walking and sipping are the initial things to do, until you're back at full calories (the new "full", about 1000 / day) so that you don't pass out (which I came close to doing until I remembered about the major surgery!). Keep hydrated. Keep getting your Protein. Because you want to lose fat and not muscle. Things will happen, but we didn't get overweight overnight, so we won't get thin overnight either. As I said, I volunteer to help. I'm on the board generally at lunch, but send me a private message if you want my email address for outside of here... Good luck!

    A little discouraged...

Yes, I just did it all: 1. Seminar 2. Appointment with the Lapband Doctor 3. Appointment with a Dietitian 4. Appointment with the Psychologist 5. Appointment with my Family Doctor to get a form filled out that the Lapband doctor requested. Had to do all of this before they would submit it to my insurance then I was told that insurance has up to 30 days to responsed 6. Dr. Teel said I will see him one more time after I get the approval before surgery 7. Then from what the Dietitian said I will have to go to another food class after approved. 8. Pretesting at the hospital a week before surgery Good Luck! Submited to insurance last Wednesday....................

    Sleeve Of Steel?

I'm 5 weeks out and haven't had any issues either. No nausea, no vomiting, no aversions to any foods, no slime, no dumping, nothing. I got in my Protein from day 2 and Water as well. I drink normally. I chew pretty well, but don't necessarily eat real slow, about 10 minutes to finish 2-3 oz of food. Never had an issue with eating too fast. I do stick to protein with a few veggies here and there, but not every day. I haven't eaten sugar, bread or other refined carbs, so I don't know about them. I have had spicy things and they're fine too. My only issue is that in 5 weeks I've only lost 16 lbs. SW was 229, but I had lost 61lbs in the 6 months prior to surgery with may, or may not have contributed to the slowness . I'm still holding out hope it picks up a bit, but all I can do it follow the plan and hope my body holds up it's part if the deal

    weight loss stopped

I'm just curious if you have read the threads on this topic and if your really feel the loss has stopped or stalled? You're right, the topic has been discussed at length and the information is still relevant and up to date.
  11. I had VSG with hiatal hernia repair.....surgery was on a Monday and I was working again the following Monday....but I work from home so I have a pretty easy time of it..............If I had a regular job I would have wanted one more week.
  12. Curious how long recovery time is afrer surgery? One week? Two weeks? Sent from my SM-G920P using the BariatricPal App
  13. Doggz, I think you are right. I am guessing my sleeve holds a bit more than some, but if I stick to dense Protein, that is the key. I have been trying the past couple of days to consciously consume more calories to try to break my stall. Not sure its working. I'm not sure how much "more" a person needs to eat (or if it should be a different type of food) to break a stall. Oilsooner, yum, hardboiled eggs. Those really fill me up when I have them, so I bet they will keep you full feeling too. Amanda -- I wish I had lower capacity, but I guess all in all, I still eat a ton less than I used to, so if you look at it from that perspective, its still major improvement. Thanks everyone!

    husband sleeved on the 19th..

Welcome to the newcomers! My wife got the RNY and I was sleeved later. We helped each other through the downs, stalls, and ups. We have both passed goal and do not miss the combined 245 pounds that came between us. Our hugs are now real hugs not just belly bumps.

    2nd stage diet

I eat B: Protein shake L: tuna salad, or stuffed shells w/o shell, chicken salad or egg salad, or cottage chees...etc S: LF cheese stick (string cheese) D: Sloppy Joe (lean ground beef with lots of bbq) or salmon, tuna, chopped chicken, string Beans, or cream corn, cauliflower mashed, or brocoli heads (no more than 3/4 to a cup of food) etc Dessert: Skinny cow fudge bar or lf smoothie with fresh fruit and lf yogurt Keep in mind- I dont eat ALL of that, just examples of things to fill in each meal! Just an example. I always start my day with a Protein Shake to ensure that I get that protein in for the day, and if I get hungry I eat a small snack. I found I actually have energy when I eat at least 3/4 a cup of food for dinner. I am tighter in the morning, eat a light lunch, then a slightly bigger dinner. I can eat more at night, so I know I will be one to ease my band open once I get a fill. I have one more week of mushies, but frankly mushies aren't that bad and I don't mind being on them. if you have any more questions, let me know!

  19. First off sleeved June 15, 2015 Starting weight:265 Surgery weight:240 Today's weight:191 I had just a few problems after surgery with getting sick. Recovery was good and I was on smashed foods when I was released from the hospital. I was eating a spoonful of refried Beans with cheese and sour cream for about a week and half then added other foods as tolerated. I had trouble finding a Protein shake I liked after surgery and have finally found one that I can handled. I take my Vitamins and stool softener at night. I forget my Calcium all the time:( I just had my blood draw and everything came back in the normal range. When I was about 6 weeks out I hit a stall.....I stayed the same weight for about 3 weeks. I got very frustrated and I changed everything up. I added 10 mins to the treadmill(45 mins total), stationary bike for 20 mins and then started some leg exercises as my tummy was still a little sore. I upped my calories a little and would do treadmill and bike everyday, legs every other day. Then I would drink my Protein Shake right after I worked out. I would eat about an hour before I worked out. I changed what I was eating to only protein and did this for about a week. It helped a little. I have hit several stalls since then and tried all these things since and they haven't helped. I go a week or some and not lose then lose a few pounds. I might gain and then lose, I have been hovering at 191.5-189 for three weeks now and I can not seem to break this. I think that if you keep doing what your suppose to do your body will eventually realize and the scales will move again. My best advise is clean out the pantry and fridge. Get rid of any and all temptations and find a Protein Bar and Protein Drink to use after workouts/when your starving and that will help with the cravings your having if you are. Good luck and enjoy the ride. Sometimes the stalls help you realize where you have come from, and let's your mind caught up with your body changes!!
  20. Stalls happen. I had one only a week out from surgery that lasted 4 weeks. I can tell you I was doing everything I was supposed to do. Then after four weeks the scale started to move and I have lost 10 lbs in about 2 weeks. I think sometimes our bodies just need to catch up with itself. Those four weeks I didn't lose any weight but I lost a lot of inches. Hang in there! If you are doing everything you are supposed to the weight will come off! Try staying off the scale for awhile so you don't get overly frustrated. Take care!
  21. I'm getting in 80 or more g's of protein. I'm currently in the process the last week so starting over with vitamins. My stomach was getting upset when I took my meds. So I stopped all vitamins and just took my required meds I have been on for years. Then I started adding vitamins until I found the two culprits. The gallbladder meds and the B complex do a number on my gut! I am on soft foods and have also had ups and downs, i will never eat tuna or salmon ever again. I switched from soy milk as it gave me freight train farts, i now drink skim fairlife which is high protein, low sugar and no lactose. I walk everyday and lift light hand weights. It's too cold for me to continue walking outside and I need more exercise so i joined Planet Fitness and start tomorrow. So with all that, I guess my next move is nut or stay away from scale.

    Not banded quite yet....

hey, I was banded on may 6th, 2008, i was 21 at the time. the pre-procedures where a ECG "eco-cardio grahm" A complete blood count. the psych evaluation is quick and easy fo me. it is just to see if a person has any body image issues and unrealistic goals...like weighing 50 lbs or something like that. the band was the best thing i eve did....for real. i lost 87lbs in 8 months....my first month....i lost 30lbs....a pound a day. i weighed 380 im down to 293...i wore a tight size 52 jeans now roomy 44. i was wearing 5xl-4xl tee', now im down to 2xl's. i workout 4-5 times a week, but diet is the most important thing! it is important to stick to the diet and eat consistantly. i had probs with portion control.....i loved food more than myself...now....i have trouble eating a 2000 calorie diet. like i said its the best thing iever did. STAY STRONG, STAY MOTIVATED, AND STAY TRUE TO YOUR SELF. if you ever wana talk, I am more than willing to help."if the road is easy, the destination is not worth the walk" -FURIOUS ABYSS

    Sooooo frustrated!!

Don't worry. The same thing happened to me. About 2 weeks after surgery I was hungry all the time, felt like I had not restriction and had only lost 8lbs the 1 4 weeks, but I had my 1st fill on Monday and have lost 3lbs in the last 4 days. It will work...or so I keep telling myself, just keep following the rules and eat the right kind of foods. The more protein you eat the longer you will stay full. Good Luck

    Not banded quite yet....

Hi - I am Amy. I'm from the Toledo area - so not too far from you, I guess. I haven't done anything - but I'm ready to make an apt with a surgeon. I'm probably like you in that I want to get banded as soon as possible. But - I suppose there is a reason for going thru everything that you do. I, honestly, want to go to a pschychiatrist anyway. If I have emotional eating issues - I want to address them. There wouldn't be a problem with my body if I did follow a diet. That's my problem. I always start one but fail within a week. I know you probably don't want to hear this - as I'm sure I won't either - but we are probably going to have to be patient in this process. The band is a tool and I'm sure that before we do it they are going to want us to understand it and know how to live with it. Good Luck to you!
