    Band to sleeve in Mexico

I'd suggest posting this in the Mexico & Self-Pay Gastric Sleeve Surgery forum here. BariatricPal is actually affiliated with several surgeons in Mexico, so I am sure you will get a response from their coordinator, at the very least. I had my sleeve in Mexico, but I was not a revision, so I am not sure if the process would be any different for you than it was for me. One thing you will need, if you don't have it already, is a passport or passport card for crossing the border.
  2. Today marks 3 months since my revision surgery (4/30/15). -> I am down 46lbs. -> I hit the dreaded 3 week stall and it lasted two weeks. -> I now seem to be losing around 10 lbs a month. I can live with that. -> I do exercise and see a personal trainer twice a week. I am feeling so much stronger. -> My extreme lethargy went away around week 5 or 6. -> I do get hungry now, but only occasionally and it is amazing how a few cashews can make it go away. -> I do start my day with a Premier Protein shake to help boost my protein intake. I then eat every 3 to 4 hours, protein first then veggies if I can fit them. -> food does not taste the same. It is no longer exciting, which is a good thing. I can look at a menu and choose the healthy option, rather than what sounds yummy. -> I easily feel full and have no issue pushing my plate away. -> I don't care that I am wasting food. I was wasting it before too by stock piling it on my waist! -> I went on vacation for a week and came back 2lbs lighter! That has never happened before, even with the band. -> For me the sleeve is WAY better than the band. My only regret is that I did not get the sleeve sooner. I hope this helps people who are earlier in the process. I would love to hear from others who are around the same point in their journey.
  3. I was banded in June 2011 (NWWLS Dr. Michaelson in Everett, WA). I never was able to lose more than 20lbs. About a year ago I had finally gotten fed up with the acid reflux, stuck food, and vomiting so I had it almost all unfilled. I've gained about 30 lbs back and am above my prebanded weight now. Recently I've become very interested in getting a revision done but my insurance doesn't cover it so I've been researching Mexico. Does anyone have recommendations on a surgeon? I'm also interested in the pre-op process for having it done there. What do I need to have done in the states prior to arriving in Mexico? Any advice or personal stories is appreciated.

    August Bands

Yes, I am a bit worried about it. I live in Canada and revisions are covered for 5 years as are adjustments. I worry whether I can truly learn to take small bites and chew well enough. The money part worries me too. If I fail...there goes a ton of money down the drain! I think having doubts is normal.
  5. Hey there! I am two weeks out from a RNY revision. I lost an astounding 22 pounds the first week and just 5 this week. I know I am expecting too much but it was a shock to see the difference. Here are my questions: 1. Is anyone else dealing with post-op nausea ONLY when they are sitting up (like in a desk chair)? I am fine when I am in my recliner but when I try to sit at my desk or attend a meeting, I am incredibly nauseous. I am drinking between 80-100 ounces of Water a day and getting my 60 gm of Protein in religiously. I am walking between 2.5 - 3 miles each day. Any thoughts? 2. After coming home from the hospital, the nutritionist advised me to eat 3 small meals each day (pureed foods). I did ok for about 3 days. Now I am finding that the thought of eating "real" food makes me sick. Foods that I did fine on right after surgery (shaved turkey, thin sliced cheese - things from the food list they gave me) make me so sick to my stomach that I can't even bear to try to eat them. I am back on just the Protein shakes recommended by my doctor and a little yogurt during the day. That doesn't bother me at all but I am curious why it changed so drastically. Has anyone else experienced this?
  6. I didn't have a specific brand to eat/drink, but what got me through was that I kept telling myself I could do anything for / weeks. I was so afraid of not shrinking my liver enough to have it laparoscopically! I'm day 8 post-op (band to sleeve revision) and it's getting better each day! Hang in there!!

    What "negatives" are you experiencing?

I had mine in 2012 too.. and they used the largest bougie at the time. I do carefully watch what I eat.. lots of Protein, no rice, Pasta etc.. (okay.. i ate three raviolis a few weeks ago and felt like crap... never again) but i can easily eat an 8 oz steak... plus veggies etc.. so I know "something" is different.. i dont feel as much restriction. I am seeing my dr. at the end of August and he will decide which is best-- resleeve or sleeve to MGB ... but the original post was just finding out what negative side effects people are having... I consider all of what I have going on negative side effects. I know it is not common for the sleeve to twist. I am not sure if that has anything to do with my pregnancy. My gerd is getting worse. Some days it feels like my food is sitting in my chest. I have been drinking more Protein shakes and eating lunch meat and cheese, tuna.... Anything else feels brick-like... Honestly, some days eating is just a chore.... U am looking forward to a revision for many reasons. I really wish you the best.

    Hiatel Hernia and Angulation

I am having a revision to RNY. My GERD is worse as the days go by. I hope to have surgery by October. My pouch is at the bottom of the twist...
  9. I am having a band to bypass revision tomorrow. I chose bypass over sleeve because it is a non restrictive procedure and I had serious issues with reflux due to the band. Because of that my doc recommended bypass rather than the sleeve.

Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?

Hi Tazwella, I see that your starting weight was about the same as mine so I thought I'd chime in. At 248lbs, I had my band to sleeve revision in March. I am down 51 lbs since then. I lost the most in the first 6 weeks, since then its been a steady 1.5 lb loss each week. It might sound slow, but I couldn't be happier with my results. I started out at a size 20 and yesterday I bought a size 14 dress. It's snug, but it fits!! Even if i only lose 1 pound a week, that's still another 50lbs in the next year. Which sounds amazing to me! So my advise is stay off the scale and let the clothes do the talking. Try not to weight yourself more than once a week or every other week. As long as you stick to the plan, your body will do what its supposed to. It might take a bit longer than other surgeries, but you will still get there! My revision was the best decision I ever made. No regrets whatsoever! I think you'll love it too!

Days off work after sleeve surgery

My lap band to sleeve revision was on Tuesday the 21st. Went home from hospital on Friday. Had planned to go back to work today after my checkup, but I am super tired, partly due to some internal bleeding. My dr agreed I should wait until Monday to go back, even though I also have a desk job. Grateful to be able to rest a few more days!
  13. @@LessOfMe0503 I get banded on Aug 5. I'm excited and never doubted my decision until I started reading some of the posts on this site. I have noticed that a lot of people are saying that they are being revised to the sleeve due to complications and there's not enough people on here to reassure the newcomers that the band is as wonderful as we felt when we chose it. I'm so glad to find people that are satisfied with the band that I can ask questions and express my concerns and get feedback that is supportive and not coming from a negative outlook.

My bcbs offers no bariatric coverage

Not sure where you are located but in some states, insurance purchased off the exchange is required to offer bariatric surgery. You would want to research it very carefully though. Plus with premiums, deductibles, etc. it would probably still be pretty costly, and you likely wouldn't be able to buy insurance to start before January 2016. I know many people have gone for revisions in Mexico which is at least cheaper than self-pay in the US. Good luck!
  15. I am getting an endoscopy done next month to see what is wrong with my sleeve which will most likely need a revision. My current health insurance has no bariatric coverage. Is there any insurance that I could self pay for my revision? My other option is cash pay for this surgery. Thank you.

    Port Problems

The port hurts for a while after surgery. You have to be careful. After a few months you won't notice it as much. It won't hurt to touch it. The more weight you lose, the more it'll stick out, and it depends on where your surgeon places it. I'm going to be a band to bypass revision in a few months due to band slippage and multiple complications.
  18. I had band to sleeve revision one week ago today. A few people at work that I'm close to only know I had the band out. Only my two closest friends at work know the whole story. Eventually I might tell more people at work but I just didn't want their opinions and close scrutiny. Many that I work with are young and very very healthy and have no idea what I've struggled with my whole life and I don't think they'd even understand. Besides all that I don't want them to worry
  19. Hi all of my supportive buddies! I am doing so well weight loss-wise, IMHO but have to deal with a setback. Before I had my VSG in 2014 I had both of my hip joints replaced. Obesity blew them out. In the last year I joined a gym and have been trying to get in shape and was definitely succeeding! But in January (just starting to feel more fit and strong) i had an accident of my own fault. Thinking I was more fit I forgot "the rules" for protecting a hip joint replacement and I damaged it by too much bending flexion. So now I have to have surgery for a hip joint revision and wil be unable to exercise like I am now for a couple of months, minimum. So disappointed! But it is what it is I suppose. Obviously it's a necessary situation, but I feel so sad that I have to be "off the grid" with activity when it was going so well for the first time in my life. It's scaring me that I might have trouble restarting. Anyone ever go through something similar?
  20. I had my revision 4 weeks ago today on 6/30 and I've lost 23 pounds since my then. Before surgery I was having a hard time keeping anything down prior to surgery due to all of the problems with my band so for the last month before surgery I did a mostly liquid diet with some sort of a chicken meal each night. I lost 20 pounds on that before my surgery. So, since the last week of May/first week of June I've lost 46 pounds. Honestly, on a day to day basis my weight loss feels so slow, but when I sit back and look at what I've done in so little time it feels amazing. Whether anyone loses 20 or 30 or 40 pounds in the first few months, I don't think they should feel bad about that. It's an amazing accomplishment. What I always tell myself is would I have been able to do this without the surgery? I'm not sure that I could. I definitely wouldn't have stuck to that diet for a month. Having my surgery date as a end point really helped me and now that I've done it I can definitely feel the change in my cravings and physical and emotional hunger.
  21. I had my revision on 6/30/15 and they put a pressure dressing over my former port site to prevent this. It's just a clear tagaderm dressing over sterile cotton balls that keep pressure on the site so no fluid will form in that pocket that your port was in. I was told to leave it on until my two week checkup but if it fell off before that was ok. I showered every day and it didnt fall off until my appointment day and only because that was the first time I'd worn jeans since my surgery. I don't know if I could have handled what you guys went. Happy to hear that a lot of you have stopped having drainage.

Over a year out: How much can you eat?

I am "lucky" I suppose bc I can tolerate anything. I have restriction but it's not too severe. The downside is that I am losing slower than my roommate (same surgery date)...she eats next to nothing, water makes her sick and she lives off of pedialyte. I am happy with my slow loss (although maybe jealous of her appearance). I was a revision so I am probably destined to lose slower and from what I have read, may not lose as much.

    weight loss before revision

I had a doctor similar when I was having issue with Lapband. I left the office and did nothing for a year and then I found a new doctor and within 4 months I was scheduled for revision surgery. Look for a new doctor, don't delay. I gained all my weight lost from the band plus 50lbs so now starting all over.
  24. Hello everyone, I'm new to bp I'm having lap band to bypass revision on Monday I'm so excited but nervous just found out that my surgeon will be using the Davinci Robot anyone ever had it done with the robot??

Scheduled surgery while waiting for approval?

Mine wouldn't even contemplate setting a date before approval. And it's a good thing they didn't, since my revision approval took forever because SAMBA/Cigna was being a pain in the you-know-what about approving it. It took almost 3 months for just the submission/denial/appeal/denial/appeal/peer-to-peer/approval process, not including any of the pre-submission hoops that I had to jump through. Now I have to do my medical clearances, but I'm hoping to talk them into setting a date so that I can request time off of work and get my mom a plane ticket to come and stay with me.
