Hi! I have had two appointments so far for weight loss surgery and I'm still not 100% sure which surgery I want to have, the sleeve or the bypass. I have Aetna in Ohio for my surgery (I work for the State) and was wondering if anyone here had bypass surgery and could share with me what their out of pocket was for the surgery? Thanks! Taking a lot of things into consideration with this process. Second question: what are you realistically able to eat? Is this going to be a funeral to food once this surgery is done? I've heard of people a year out eating a handful of almonds and a water for lunch and being so full. Is that the extent of the eating experience I will have? I'm kind of a foodie and live in an amazing culinary city. I know all things in moderation and all that, but will I literally not be able to dine any longer once I have this surgery? Thanks for all the feedback, extremely new at this, and appreciate anything you'd be willing to share. Thanks!

I went clothes shopping today at a store (with the pandemic haven't done much of that). Not sure if it is the pandemic or my weight loss, but my experience today was SO different then in the past. I had a number of sales people approach me right off the bat. Friendly, offering to help. In the past, I would wander the same store on my own without anyone offering to help. I've seen others post about being treated differently after losing weight and while i'm not positive that's what this was, it's certainly something I'll watch for. The NSV --- I took one of the sales people up on their offer to help and mentioned after losing weight I'm not really sure what size I am. She knew immediately what options to pull and I am in a size 28 jeans! That's a size 8, as in single digits!!! I am also wearing a Small in a number of tops. Holy $(@*. 🤯

Bad Habits Creeping Back Up WAY to soon! PCOS
Lia M posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, I had the sleeve on April 10th of this year. Immediately, I lost a ton of course being on a liquid diet and I think that my stomach itself weighed a ton! *grins*..Anyway, I can eat anything, no problem......but there it is....a problem. I started nibbling on gold fish crackers, it went from a few, to a bag..I am only 10 weeks out and other than my stomach hurting if I eat to fast or too much ( which rarely ever happens ), I can literally eat anything. I have polycystic ovarian syndrome and I know that affects things as well, but honestly I just finished my second month and I have lost 35 pounds. However, I lost 25 of that my first week. So, I am losing very slowly, and I know I'm getting too many carbs and things in. I have been great as far as I haven't had any fast food, no chocolate, no chips...( all were a downfall of mine ) but obviously I am still eating enough to hamper the weight loss. I also over the past week especially have felt hunger for the first time since the surgery. I was never hungry before, now..I am. It worries me, as obviously I had control issues to begin with...so that doesn't go away and I'm already fighting with myself. You know the head story...you wake up and think to yourself, "no crackers today" then as you are eating the crackers you go, "well thats ok, just have a protien shake for dinner and nothing else", then as you are eating dinner you go, "Well there is always tomorrow"... I've done all the tricks...think of where you'll be..think of how hard you've worked...I even think about how much I paid as insurance didn't cover it. I surely don't want to be the only person ever to have this not be successful for them...I mean if you cut out 80% of my stomach and I still can't make it work! WTH! right? What have you done to help get over hurdles like this? Have any of you tried any replacement foods to maybe get that munching habit satisified without taking in the calories and carbs? Funniest thing is, everyone thinks I have amazing control.....Seriously......have they met me!? -

futurelookinghealthy replied to MsFab1988's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I gained 7 pounds after about my 4th week of banding but it was mostly due to swelling of the legs and ankles. Hopefully that will change after next week as I am going to get my veins done. The dr. said I should lose all swelling and hopefully more weight afterwards. Do you have any swelling? -
So i am now 19 days post op. in my mushies stage. I am not currently working so I am home all day. When I wake up I can not eat, dont even want to at all. so I drink a protien shake. then I am hungry at about 1 or 2 so i will eat 1/2 to 3/4 cup of whatever mush protien. then i will eat again around 6 or 7. then around 9pm my stomach growls and feels so empty I am starving! I feel hungry, its not just head hunger, its a little soon to eat again but really i am hungry!!! So every night nw i have been eating cream of wheat with sf syrup to sweeten it, made with milk and i also add beneprotien to up the protien content. it helps but i am still hungry after that. I try waiting an hour and then drinking fluids to help, which it doesnt really. I am also not losing any weight despite not going over 900 calories. I am getting the right amount pf protien and working on the fluids right now im at like 60. Am i doing something wrong, am i hurting myself by eating at night? if i dont eat i cant sleep because i am hungry. I am not losing at all, and i am exercising 3-4 times a week since i was released to do ....ack! HeLP!

Weight Loss Since Surgery
honk replied to scola1994's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The AVERAGE weight loss with the band is 1-2 pounds per week. You are at the high end with 2 pounds per week. While some people on here loose faster there are those of us who are more of 0-1 pound per week (and I stay in the 1000-1200 cal per day and do at least an hour of cardio 7 days a week.) -

Maybe I just don't want it bad enough
carol1951 commented on carol1951's blog entry in carol1951's Journal
I don't know if I don't want to lose weight or if I'm scared to lose weight, but I just keeping shooting myself in the foot all the time. I eat all the wrong foods most of the time. I know I shouldn't eat it, but I do it anyway. Breakfast is still just a protien shake if its early it just doesn't want to go down. Then around 10 or 11 I eat chips, crackers or cheese. Then when its lunch time I skip it or I'm to full from all the junk that I don't eat. Then around 3 I'm hungry and can't hardly stand it, so I eat something easy like chip, crackers or cheese. I really don't eat many sweets cause I know I can't keep them in the house. I do crave chocolate. My DH is not a sweet person so thats why I have the chips and crackers. I don't usually, in the past, eat ice cream although here lately I can't seem to get enough of it. I guess I'm going to have to not buy that either. I'm lost on what to eat for lunch. I can't eat bread it just doesn't want to go down. I do eat salad some, I've done tuna or chichen salad some, soup alot. I have trouble with chicken and some beef. I think I'm not chewing my food good enough and if I'm too hungry I eat to fast so I need to slow down and eat slower. I really did do good in Texas, but maybe that was because I didn't have to cook or think about it. I was moving more while I was gone. I really need to excerise more, walking is good. I need to find some excerises that don't require me to get down on the floor. I have a really hard time getting up off the floor with my bad knee. I need to work on my stomach it is getting floppy and my butt is sagging. I still am wearing my 3x's and I have lost 35 lbs. I really want to go down in the sizes, but I have this big butt and stomach. My arms are flopping in the wind so need to get some excerise the will tighten them up. I NEED HELP. I WILL DO THIS IF TAKE ME YEARS. I KNOW I HAVE TO PUT MORE EFFORT IN TO IT. NO ONE BUT ME CAN DO THIS. I HAVE TO STOP BUYING THING THAT I KNOW I CAN EAT THAT ARE NOT GOOD FOR ME. I NEED TO GET AN ANOTHER FILL AND HOPE THAT THE AMOUNT THAT I CAN EAT GOES DOWN TO 1/2 CUP AMOUNTS. I MUST KEEP MYSELF BUSY, IF I'M BUSY I DON'T EVEN THINK OF FOOD. THE MORE I DO THE MORE I WILL BE ABLE TO DO. THE MORE I EXCERISE THE STRONGER I WILL GET. I CAN DO THIS. I feel so alone in this struggle. I need to find a good support group that is close to home, wonder how to find a group. I need to find some friends that understand my struggle. -
New to the site. Introducing my self and also need help with a problem
delaina posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Just saying hello as I am new to the site. Sorry for presenting you with my problem on my first time on site. I have been happily banded for 3 1/2 years. I have lost my weight steadily and altogether I have lost seven stone. I am still losing slowly and steadily (except for this week when I have lost four pounds in one week. This is likely because recently I have started to get quite severe pain after I eat or drink. Initially about a month ago the pain emerged only after I had eaten . Now it is painful 5 to ten minutes after I eat or drink The pain lasts about half an hour then goes away. The pain is alongside the left of my naval around my waist - under my rib and up the back of my rib cage - under my arm and around my boob!  All on my left side. I would be grateful to know if anyone else has had these symptoms and how they dealt with them. Best wishes Delaina:smile2: -
Does anyone know why we dont sweat anymore? or it takes a long time to begin to sweat when working out ?
mistysj replied to OHHLALA's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I no longer sweat by just existing. The more weight I lose, the more intensely I work out and I definitely sweat buckets on a hard workout when I am hydrated. It feels great! -
32 pounds in the 10 weeks post surgery while my friend lost 50 in 8...
KittyChick posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
We were at the same starting weight too give or take 10lbs (I WAS HEAVIER!) Surgery was 1/21. I had a very rough recovery, had the notorious three week stall which lasted 3 WEEKS, and have been feeling like my progress is NOT where it should be. I hardly ate or drank anything after surgery for at least a month. I had Water nausea & everything. Puree phase was the worst...I just could NOT eat and the sight of Protein shakes made me heave. She, on the other hand, had a super easy recovery and lost almost 20lbs more than me at this stage (her surgery was in Aug & 8 weeks later she was down 50) I just started tracking food- right now I'm having about 800-900 calories most days & I just started back to doing vigorous exercise this last two weeks. Tuesday I did a 63 minute spin class and ate 1500 calories that day. I felt that was WAY too much. I don't even like going over 1000 calories but according to FitnessPal, those 63 minutes burned off 1100 calories... Anyway, I've done over 190 minutes of exercise this week and lost only 2 friggin pounds. She's 10-12 years older than I am too. I''ve been teary all morning since weighing in. I don't know if this was really worth it. I could have struggled like this WITHOUT spending $7000 of my money on this effing surgery. -
We all went through the insurance required 7 months or so of nutrition counseling and weight management. Through out that whole process, I guess all I focused on was how thin I was going to be and not as much on my lifestyle changes. I am 3 weeks out and have had many thoughts of...what the heck have I done? I am on pureed now which is better than pure liquids, but I have major cravings every food commercial or even when I drive by the darn McDonald's. Weight loss has only been 14 pounds which seems ridiculous because I am probably only consuming 400-500 calories a day and exercising. I know it is done now and no going back, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I have buyers remorse. Anyone else feel this way?

Just getting started
kerrik54304 replied to kerrik54304's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have just started my medically supervised weight loss. My insurance requires 3 months. I meet with my Dr. next week. He told me to just keep a food journal. I had to do that for the first 2 weeks. I am not sure what he will say next week. I meet with the nutritionist next week and have an appointment for my psych eval on July 31st. I don't have a date set yet. It sounds like you are close! -
NO weight loss! Under eating?
JoiaRox replied to MrsShannonDennis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First of all - HI! I'm from Bakersfield, too! Why aren't we friends?!? LOL! Could be that you're undereating...how many calories are you getting? I'd suggest upping your calories 200 to see if that helps give you fuel. It's weird to think that we have to eat MORE to lose weight, but if you're working out as hard core as you say you are, your body probably isn't getting enough fuel to burn and is holding on to what it's got. I know that I have to play around with my calories when I start seeing a stall...in the beginning, I was proud of myself for eating less than 1,000 calories a day, but soon found the scale at a plateau. Once I jumped to 1,300-1,400 calories per day, voila! -
NO weight loss! Under eating?
Chele6378 replied to MrsShannonDennis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm only 6 weeks post op but i'm averaging 1300 calories a day and losing over 4 pounds per week. I track my food on thedailyplate.com On there you can put in your height, weight and activity level and then choose how much you want to lose per week. I put 3.5 and it says I can consume 1436 calories per day. 1400 is alittle hard for me to reach but 1300 has been pretty do-able. Hope that helps!! -
I was cleared for anything at 5 weeks. Not everything set well the first time I tried it and my doctor said if that happend to try again later. So far the only thing I really don't eat well is oranges. My doctor says the no drinking is to not take up space you need for solid food so I would think that the soup broth is as nutritious as the solids so I do eat soups. I have had no problem losing the weight either. Only 19 lbs to goal! yay

Feeling very frustrated and discouraged :(
Lissa replied to petra1124's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My best friend is an ER nurse and works in a hospital where the main doctor is a bariatric surgeon, so she sees the complications that can happen. When I was researching WLS initially, I kept everything on the down low because I had similar feelings to the OP. Then I had some major health complications, including pneumonia and pulmonary embolisms that put me in the hospital three times in two months. My regular doctors told me that if I didn't lose at least 100 pounds in a hurry, I wouldn't live another year. I didn't like the WLS doctors I was researching and finally asked my RN friend about whether she though WLS was right for me, and she immediately recommend the doctor that she worked with, Dr Domkowski. I was sold from the first seminar I attended with him. For me, WLS was the right choice. I had all the same doubts and fears that it wouldn't work for me, or that WLS was somehow cheating. But, 19 months later, 120 pounds lighter, I DON'T CARE if WLS is cheating. I just care that I have a new, improved life and my health prognosis is once again normal. I still have more weight to lose, but I'm not in the red flag danger zone I was living in before. Thank God, Dr. Domkowski and whomever invented WLS! Your family needs to be supportive, or at least keep their mouths shut. Would they rather you wait until you're in the position I was in pre-sleeve? I applaud you for making a life-changing decision for yourself and for your ability to be resolute in the face of their disapproval. But, when it comes down to it, YOU are the person in charge of making decisions for your life. Their opinion is just that, their opinion. You are the person who has to live with the consequences and you are the one who gets to make the choices based on your own research. Oh, and as for having children, Tiffykins has two of the most adorable littles you'll ever see. Both were conceived and born after her sleeve...and she's been able to get back down to her goal weight fairly quickly, even after having two babies in quick succession. It is possible to have healthy children without sacrificing your own health after the sleeve. BTW, I apologize that I cannot seem to make paragraph breaks in my posts here lately. -
Hormone changes after surgery?
catwoman7 replied to Horseshowmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't know if yours is hormone-related or not, but a lot of women DO experience hormone dumps after surgery. It'll usually stabilize a few weeks or months after the weight loss slows down. -
I was sleeved last Thursday and had been enjoying the daily weight loss until yesterday when I didn't lose anything and am UP a pound today! (now i realize it might not be a big deal to some but it is to me.....i didnt go throigh this to gain weight back!). Not sure if it's my body going into starvation mode or what it is.....I've been trying to eat properly but I have a hard time getting in ENOUGH calories. My protein has been sufficient....2 protein shakes (40g/per) plus food. Breakfast I usually have half cup if lucky of cream Of wheat w/coconut milk, snack protein drink, 1/4 cream soup 1/4 coconut milk for lunch, protein drink for dinner & plain Greek yogurt/coconut milk for dinner....feeling really discouraged today. I realize I'm just a week out and HAVE lost weight but why the GAIN? My calories are barely 500/day if that depending what I eat! Any suggestions appreciated. Im going to try & walk more but it's going to be 100 degrees today so might not get too far today!

I figured with my weight loss id lose it like id lose weight in the past. I normally would lose weight in all the places I didn't need to lose it...butt, boobs, and legs. But that's not the case with my sleeve i'm losing it everywhere evenly. I need smaller bra size around, smaller shirts and smaller pants. My feet have even got smaller and are looking kind wrinkly lmbo. I love it. i'm down 26lbs since surgery and feel better about my appearance than I have in a long time! How is everyone else weight loss coming off? Sent from my DROID BIONIC using VST

First Week Discouraging Stall
emily_0192010 replied to vsjb's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That was NOT fat gain! It is WATER WEIGHT! Your body fluctuates hourly, daily, weekly, etc. For me, I actually gain close to 10 lbs every 3 weeks... it goes right down and then some... but it just happens. This is not an actual gain. If you can, pull yourself away from the scale. You will learn that your numbers will fluctuate and that this is normal. Until then, you are going to drive yourself crazy. Don't kill yourself on exercise right now either. You are only a week out of surgery. Going outside in this heat with so little calories would be hazardous to your health. You could pass out or get dizzy and that would set you back. The only thing I didn't see you mention was water. Make sure you are getting in your liquids!! Believe it or not, to get rid of water weight, you have to drink more water! This is the MOST IMPORTANT thing for you at only a week out. Good luck and don't let this discourage you. -
