I'm Las Vegas, and have almost two months to go before my surgery. It will be moved up, though. I'm with Dr. Soong at the Surgical Weight Control Center. Wishing everybody a safe and happy journey.

30 lbs....Should I be happy??
health4life replied to Hazel-eyes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Of course you should be happy! It's 30 pounds less than what you had when you started and typically at that 25-30 pound mark is where people really begin to notice you're losing weight, which give us additional motivation to lose more. Keep your protein up, carbs down and exercise. Don't skip meals and drink you daily amount of water. You should have no problem with steady weight loss. Congrats on your success. -

If you are starting this journey next week (or thereabouts), like me, I would love to keep in touch as we go through this! Never thought I would be "looking forward" to a surgery...but this will be worth it! I just turned 40, have two kiddos, blessedly, a great and supportive husband and family, and a heckuva lotta weight to lose--at 313 pounds and 5'7"--but I am ready to use this tool to turn my disastrous relationship with food around for good. Anyone else planning to get a trainer? My plan is to swap food obsession for a healthier exercise one. I hope I can still get those ol' muscles to remember what they are for.... Best wishes to everyone out there!!

Relationship challenges after sleeve
LittleBill replied to Corrie2016's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My wife and I are much closer now. Mainly, that's because we've both lost weight. Seriously though, we have always had a good relationship through almost 33 years of marriage. Most other family members have been very supportive as well. Some of my friends have gotten a little squirrelly, but since they are more in the "good acquaintance" category more than close friend category, it doesn't really bother me. Most people who know about my surgery have been way more understanding than I had hoped or expected. -
scared after surgery
HarleyNana replied to gottabehappy's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I gained 5 lbs in the hospital and was only there overnite and never had a meal or anything to drink while I was in there, all IV's. Are you sore from the gas? Your doctor should have given you something for the pain if you're having pain from the surgery. I didn't need meds when I got home, but everyone's different. I didn't have tummy gas either, but I had pain in my left shoulder. Hope you're feeling better real soon. -
Sugar, sugar, sugar and the liver reduction diet.
2goldengirl replied to Lucrezaborgia's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, sugar is a dealbreaker. Here's why: the way your liver "shrinks" is largely by using the glycogen stored in the liver. To do that you need to severly restrict carbs. That means you could likely have your one cup of coffee with the real thing in the morning (counting on one tsp or less of sugar), but you're relly going to have to kiss the fruit goodbye for a while. You will be able to enjoy fruit again, but in much smaller amounts than you're used do, just like everything else. As far as your Vitamin deficiencies go, you will have to rely on supplements, at least during the weight loss phase, you can't eat enough to get all your nutrients from food alone. -
Sugar, sugar, sugar and the liver reduction diet.
Lucrezaborgia replied to Lucrezaborgia's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Fruits, starchy veggies, and carbs are banned for the liver reduction diet. So is sugar and fatty products. Another kink in my diet plan is my daughter is a 5% weight child and I can see between my husband's legs as he walks. They want me to focus on Protein intake. I'm also not the cook. Shopping next month is going to be interesting. -
By the way, I forgot to say that my Aria says my body weight went up this week (!) by 2.2%. What gives?! Have been eating healthy!

I Cant Do This
newgrandmother replied to newgrandmother's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
candace yes i will take a look at it. please send it. kel thank you so much for that info. they have not offered a suppresant i wish they would. i was thinking about going to the weight doctor for pills -
Everyone's weight loss is different. But weight loss does and will slow down as you get smaller. This is because your BMI is reducing as you age and as you get lighter. So the amount of calories you were burning 7 weeks ago, is higher than it is right now.

I had the same problem. However I was able to find some old records that was beyond five years and that work. Also you can put a thing in there about you could not obtain records from all other doctors because they no longer have your file. Also you can use your OBGYN records as yell. We had problems with my wife pcp in regards to past weights etc. His excuse was HIPPA. So we just went to the OBGYN and had them do the same letter and she was approved within 20 minutes after it was resubmitted by the doctors office. If you would like to see the letter send me your e-mail and I will forward it to you. We both were approved in less than 30 days. I hope that this will help you out. Chris

30 lbs....Should I be happy??
Hazel-eyes replied to Hazel-eyes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks Trish...I was banded in Philly! PA Hospital...I wonder if we have the same doctor! I used to do a lot of weight training in my thinner days and it did help...I know I need to start up again. I know that if I would have followed all of the rules I would be under 200 by now. -
My highest recorded weight was 392 (in 2017). I was 389 when I started the program to have WLS and since my program required a 6 month monitored weight loss I lost 68 pounds during that time and was 321 on my surgery day. I'm currently 178 pounds. For reference... I had the Loop Duodenal Switch/SADI-S/SIPS surgery. It's a gastric sleeve stomach, just with the added intestinal bypass bit.

Don't let anyone tell you where you should be weight wise. You decide when you are satisfied then work on maintaining that. I am honestly not sure why people think it is ok to tell a former fat person what they should weigh? I am starting to get that now too (even at 162) and it boggles my mind. I would never presume to tell someone they are too fat so why would I say yoy are getting too skinny? It is our bodies, we have to live in them and so it is about your confort zone. Don't make yourself crazy about a number on a scale iit doesn't define you.

Your weight loss is impressive and your stamina for the hard work is over the moon! Congrats!

Congratulations! That is awesome. I too find that after losing weight I can do so much more - it's such a reward to be able to walk up stairs without sweating!

What, if anything, is too serious to joke about? Nothing that I've come across yet, depending on the situation. There's situational seriousness, but not absolute. If you could wake up tomorrow having gained one quality or one ability, what would it be? Greater patience for some of the things I have little patience for now. Whom, if anyone, do you envy enough to want to trade lives with them? I don't know that I truly envy anyone enough to give up my life to have theirs. I had to fight obesity, but all in all my life is plenty good enough for me. If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what woud it be? More exposure to lower income families/people. I was raised in a very affluent area, in a family that - from about the time I was 3 on - did not want for anything. My classmates were mostly the children of actors/actresses, professional sports players, etc. The first time I was introduced to a less affluent "real" setting, it was very uncomfortable to me. To date, I still do not always respond the way I should. E.g. - suggesting an expensive restaurant without thinking that might put a friend in an akward position, or being out shopping with a friend and walking into an expensive store without first thinking that it could be "in your face" to be there. I should be more proactive in my considerations. If there were a public execution on tv, would you watch it? Probably depends on the type of execution, and how it was being broadcast. If it were being done for money/ratings, no way. I've seen people die before. And in my time I've seen some things I later wished I hadn't, and I know they can stay around and haunt you for a while, and have a way of literally making your skin crawl regardless of how much time has passed. Yet I am very curious in a purely physiological/medical way about what happens during some types of execution... curious enough to watch one... perhaps, depending on the type. But I would really have to weigh it against the potential for regret. Would you rather arrive at a party underdressed or overdressed? Probably overdressed. It's much easier to dress down an outfit, than to dress it up. What's more important: actual experiences, or the memories that remain from those experiences? I think the memories. The experiences last - minutes. Each second is over in the next. It's only the memories that live on past that 2nd second. In real conversations, do you tend to talk more or listen more? Definitely listen. I'm an INTJ -- an observer. If you had to chose one, would you rather be blind or deaf? Deaf, for a purely practical reason - communication. If I'm blind, I have to re-learn an entire written system. If I'm deaf, I can still read what people write to me. I enjoy music immensely, but can always recall and feel the vibrations.

Great questions, Wheetsin... What, if anything, is too serious to joke about? The abuse, torture or neglect of any of the following: children, the elderly, the homeless, the physically or mentally challenged, animals -- pretty much anyone or anything who is in a position of being powerless/defenseless against horrible things. If you could wake up tomorrow having gained one quality or one ability, what would it be? To be more organized! Whom, if anyone, do you envy enough to want to trade lives with them? Nobody. If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what woud it be? I wish that I had not led such a sheltered and overprotected life. I know that my parents meant well and did what they believed was the best for us, but in some ways they did us a very big disservice by protecting us from our mistakes. I feel that I would have been better prepared for 'real life' if I had been allowed to practice making choices -- and living with the outcomes of those choices so that I would not make the same mistakes again. If there were a public execution on tv, would you watch it? Absolutely not. Even though Saddam Hussein was a very evil man, the thought that people were finding pleasure in his execution literally made me sick to my stomach. Would you rather arrive at a party underdressed or overdressed? Definitely overdressed. I prefer to dress up. Not over the top, mind you, but in a classy and tasteful sort of way. What's more important: actual experiences, or the memories that remain from those experiences? The experiences. You cannot have the memories without having had the experiences. In real conversations, do you tend to talk more or listen more? I'm a pretty even mix. I have evolved from being more of a talker to more of a listener and I am told that I am a good listener, but I still definitely do my share of talking! If you had to chose one, would you rather be blind or deaf? I have actually thought about this over the years. Quite honestly, it would depend on at what stage in my life I had been blinded or deafened. Between having had non-English speaking in-laws and having worked extensively with the deaf and hearing impaired, I have seen firsthand just how difficult it is when you are unable to communicate with someone. From these experiences, it has become abundantly clear to me that if I had to choose one or the other from birth, I would pick being blind. The blind -- even those who are congenitally blind -- are able to learn spoken English and are able to effectively communicate with most sighted people through the spoken word. The congenitally deaf cannot typically communicate with most hearing people. Deaf culture exists; blind culture does not -- again, related to the ability to communicate effectively with the 'outside world'. However...if I had to choose to be deafened or blind as an adult, I would choose to be deafened. I would still be able to express myself and to communicate effectively. I would have the ability to remain far more independent than if I were blind. I would be able to watch my children (and, eventually, my grandchildren) grow up -- to see the smiles on their faces and to 'see' their laughs, although I would not be able to hear them. (Plus, I could, possibly, get a cochlear implant, which would tremendously enhance my ability to hear, understand and communicate effectively.)

What, if anything, is too serious to joke about? Abuse such as in children, elderly, mentally handicapped, etc. If you could wake up tomorrow having gained one quality or one ability, what would it be? Patience.....as well as the ability to stop myself from making stupid choices. Whom, if anyone, do you envy enough to want to trade lives with them? Nobody. I have my share of hardships like everyone else but overall, my life is great! If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what woud it be? Hmm...don't even want to go there. What, if anything, is too serious to joke about? Nothing, in itself. Depends on the audience. Joking about anything too close to the listeners' hearts is unacceptable. If you could wake up tomorrow having gained one quality or one ability, what would it be? To be able to have more fun, enjoy life more. To lighten up. Whom, if anyone, do you envy enough to want to trade lives with them? No one, now. If I'm ever reincarnated, I'd like to have a life like Jimmy Buffett. If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what woud it be? Take alcohol out of the equation. Period. If there were a public execution on tv, would you watch it? Absolutely, positively not. Would you rather arrive at a party underdressed or overdressed? Underdressed. I'm sort of used to that. What's more important: actual experiences, or the memories that remain from those experiences? The quick answer is the experiences, but without the memories did the experiences really happen? In real conversations, do you tend to talk more or listen more?If you had to chose one, would you rather be blind or deaf? I definitely listen more, but it wasn't always that way. And if I had to choose one, I'd rather be blind... deaf... blind... deaf... hmmmm.... ummmm.... wow. Deaf, I guess.
