Weight loss after sleeve
JamieLogical replied to Lucilla's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Comparing yourself to others is a recipe for frustration and misery. I know it's really hard to get your head around in the early days post-op, but your sleeve is forever. You will never be "done" with it like the diets of your past. I promise you that 10 years from now, when you are happy and healthy and maintaining your weight, how much you lost in the first month post-op will mean jack squat. -

I'm about to turn 50 and I'm the biggest I've ever been and will only get bigger when menapause hits I've done the weight loss centers and the pills just make me feel horrible. I've even tried WW and so far nothing seems to be working. I have high blood pressure, sleep apnea and extremely low metabolism. My BMI is well over 35 and I need/want to loose around 50#'s. Is the lapband procedure something I could/should have done??? Not even sure what the specifics are to having this procedure.

I was 55 when I got banded. I fought the insurance, the first two trys they denied me the band and finally I had it done 2 1/2 yrs ago. I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, border line diabetic and severe arthritis in my knees and feet that hurt so bad every day at work. I was a size 22-24 and have lost 90 pds and am now a size 10, even though I have gained 5 pds over the winter that I have been battling over the last 7 months to get off, I feel great. I am off all meds and the family Dr said I am a glowing tribute to how a person can turn their life around for the better health wise. You are never to old to change and make life better. The best decision I did and that you can make also.

I pose this to everyone. I have noticed alot of posts, blogs or mentioning (here and elsewhere), that post operative pain and persistent conditions are beginning to trend to MD's, their staff and other MD's post op - and even sleevers - that pain and discomfort is typical. If it is not easily diagnosed or found in a test it is "probably ________", fill in the blank. Gas, bloating, settling (wtf you aren't supposed to "settle", they took out a part of your stomach, they didn't detach it and leave it to float around)! This alarms me. We are taking this big step, and the improvements on mortality are getting better everyday for post-op sleevers, but there seems to be a trend for post-op pain to be explained away into this category of "it is what it is". If you had an apendectomy and you still felt pain months later, or developed pain in another area of your bowel, no doctor would go "it was where you had an apendectomy, it happens". It should not be OK within the medical community to allow themselves to ignore cronic pain of any kind - that means the patient is still in pain! You should not be left alone afterwards, you should be offered therapy for the pain if a solution cannot be found. Pain meds, qualified abdominal massage, heat therapy. If nothing else works, why aren't people being offered anti-inflammatory meds or antibiotics? If you experience relief after, you at least begin to pinpoint the situation. Hit and miss with drugs is a last resort, but is an accepted therapy in other people - why not sleevers? I very rarely come across posts where the doctor checked a patient out for an emergent heart condition or heart attack!!! We were an ignored group for so long. Shadow sufferers that are just now being understood in the medical community as this being more than just willpower to loose weight. Why now are we faltering in this fight, and allowing ourselves less that complete recovery? Is this a rant? I do not know...I just feel so frustrated, and concerned, and ANGRY that I see so many posts for my VGS fellows that are hurting, and it does not seem to always get enough attention - and the more it persists, the less attention it gets. My science theory and eval teacher would now tell me that I have pinpointed my general topic, isolated a target, recognized the problem, and now I find a solution...but I can't find a solution for everyone, for anyone. I am not a doctor. This is damn frustrating. Does anyone know of a general advocacy group for post-sleeve chronic complications?

What's the skinny on the skin?
sleevie.wonder replied to Kateness777's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If it's going to happen it's going to happen no matter the rate of weight loss. Take advantage of the "honeymoon" stage, which is the first 10 months to a year after surgery where the weight drops rapidly. After that you will have to work much harder. Personally, after losing almost 60 lbs in 2 months, my skin seems to be a bit squishier and my stomach is still hanging a little low. My arms have always been big so I know for a fact I will have a lot of skin there. I am 25 years old. I'd rather have loose skin than have it full of fat. Bring on the skin! -
Hi everyone, I was sleeved on December 18, 2012, I am down 41 lbs. I had stalled for a week and found that the more protein I get the faster I lose weight. So I have and egg (17 grams protein)or cheese for breakfast, protein shake (30 grams protein) at about 11:00 a.m., more protein for lunch like chili (3oz)(16 grams protein)which is around 2:00 and then dinner I will have protein and a vegi. So far so good. I wish everyone well

I was sleeved on December 18th and have lost 27 pounds. I lost 20 of that in the first three weeks but then the weight loss really slowed down. I'm eating 600-700 calories a day, drinking only Water (85 oz. a day), and getting in about 50 grams of Protein. I started doing the treadmill an hour a day this week and have starting losing again. I just don't understand why I'm not losing more quickly when my calories are so low. Thankfully I have only vomited twice since I got home from the hospital. Once from eating a bite or two too much salmon, once eating too much of a fish taco. At the hospital I threw up the entire two days I was there (ugh!) I do feel really good and am hopeful that my weight loss will start going more quickly now that I'm exercising. Hope we all start losing more! :-)

Hi! I've mentioned this on a forum in the pre-op gastric sleeve group but am hoping for more information from this one. So basically- I have UHC which covers bariatric surgery as long as I meet the requirements which is not a big deal or concern for me. However- I have learned that once my precert is submitted, I cannot schedule surgery any sooner than 6 months from that date. So if I submit and am approved in December, I cannot have surgery until May of 2016. I made sure each time I spoke with them that they are not referring to the 6 month diet/weight loss supervision. This is a year long process...apparently. Has anyone else seen or heard of this? I keep praying that they are ALL confused and misunderstanding the information in front of them, but even reading it, it's pretty clear. I've researched all over the internet and have YET to come across a situation similar to mine. I have to make my surgeon's office aware of this tomorrow as the benefits coordinator was completely unaware when I spoke with her previously about this and mentioned my concern. She didn't think it sounded correct and basically told me not to worry about it. But now I have no choice but to accept what is. Just curious to know if anyone else is in the same disappointing situation as I. Perhaps I'm looking for a buddy to pitch a fit with Or maybe someone to reassure me that this is not the end of the freakin' world and 6 more months is not really as bad as it currently sounds....

Hi. Just wondering if others are experiencing uneven weight loss. One breast is now smaller then the other. They were the same size before. Have others noticed this?

My understanding of UHC is that the plans vary widely, depending on what company you work for. My policy is through a large financial services company. The paperwork we are provided says surgery is covered if you are morbidly obese. I called UHC and they said all they need is a letter from the doctor listing my height, weight and BMI. As long as the BMI is over 40 I am covered. NOTHING else is required. No monitoring, no diets, etc. I am hoping this is actually how it will work for me! Wish me luck, my first consult is Wednesday.

So I am still at the approval stage of VSG. I am 33 yr old mother of 2 beautiful girls and married to the love of my life. I have been overweight since I was a teenager and have been up and down since then. I had originally gone to the seminar planning on doing lap band surgery. I had not really heard about VSG until that day. I left the seminar knowing that the sleeve was what I wanted and the lap band was definitely not right for me. I met with my surgeon and he thinks I am a great canidate for the sleeve. I have done a ton of research since then and I am positive this is what I want. That being said I still have fears. I am scared that I will not get approved. I am terrified that I will fail with this also. Most of all I do no know what it is like to be thin. I am also scared to be hopeful that I could lose weight and keep it off. Also will I have excess skin on my arms and legs. I am expecting the tummy to have excess skin especialy where I have developed the baby pooch after my last child. I was keeping it pretty quiet that I was planning on doing WLS. I have recently told my boss and a few of my co-workers. My overweight friends are excited for me. My thin friends keep offering to diet with me or go to the gym instead of doing the surgery. My husband has been supportive, but keeps hearing horror stories about bypass surgery. I keep telling him that this is competely different surgery. I know there are still risks. I still have not told my dad and I do not plan to until after the surgery. Sorry to be so long winded, but it is nice to talk to people that have been through this or are going through this too. I am so excited to see so many people doing well after this surgery.

Non NSAID headache relief.....
jusstice replied to aprilj's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a migraine sufferer as well, but they had tapered off as I gained weight. I have started getting them a little more regularly after vsg (probably hormone related). I tried tylenol for the first one- FAIL. After that I used Excedrin for Migraines. I may go to the doc to see what type of prescription meds they can give me again, since it seems I need to be prepared for them again. -
Gastroparesis and Bariatric Surgery
Mountaingal replied to gobeit's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Just a thought to share. It might be irrelevant or completely wrong as I am not a Dr but here is what came to me. If you are unable to have your surgery of choice due to the gastroparesis would a plication work? Since your stomach is all still there perhaps the part that is folded over inside itself still can help with peristalsis since it is still "alive". I know the results may now look as wonderful as some other surgeries and they are slower but it might be better than giving up. Also the stats for weight loss look far better in Europe than they do here and in some countries it is the surgery of choice for weight loss. Might be worth looking into. I wish you the very best. My daughter also has gastroparesis and it is no fun. -
The insurance company somehow got it in their head that I have severe liver disease (which I don't). I do have a mild case of fatty liver disease, which they specifically mention in their policy as not disqualifying someone from the procedure, so I think someone saw the words "liver disease" and automatically red-stamped it without looking any further. I think what annoyed me the most was that this was such a stupid screw up on their part. I almost think they knew it was a screw up, but denied it anyhow in the hopes that I wouldn't appeal it, and they wouldn't have to pay. I was nervous about the BMI thing also. I had actually counted how much weight I could lose to meet the 5% requirement, but still be above the BMI requirements. Was your BMI of 39 when you first saw the nutritionist, or after you have been on their diet for a while? My insurance/doctor started counting when I first saw them not at the end. Also, if you have any co-morbities, high blood pressure or diabetes for example, the BMI requirement was less, so you might want to check into that if your nervous.

Gastric sleeve and a leak
Kindle replied to beauty and the beast's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was scared of leaks, too, especially being self pay and knowing my insurance would not cover any costs of complications. I researched the heck out of ever possible complication scenario. I really wanted to know when I could stop worrying about every little twinge and rumble and "funny feeling" I had after surgery. It was 6 months before I finally let myself breath a sigh of relief. The funny thing is, I Was so worried about the complications that I never bothered to get stressed about the pre and postop diets, slow weight loss, stalls, constipation, diarrhea or hair loss. -

Hi everyone. I have been lurking around on this website for a while but have never posted. I was too afraid to post before getting approved and jinx myself into being denyed. I spent a lot of time reading other people's insurance stories, looking to see where I might stand with mine. There are so many variations with each company as to what is required to get this surgery: Six-month supervised weight loss programs, psych evals, BMI over 40 and co-morbidies...I fully expected for my approval (or denial) to take a few months. All I can say now is "WOW!" I went to the seminar with the surgeon on January 24th and my paperwork was submitted to the insurance on January 28th. I took the advice of another "bandster" on this forum and called the care coordinator at UHC daily. I was approved on Thursday, January 31st! I didn't even get to turn in the letter that I had requested from my PCP stating why I should have this procedure. I do have a BMI over 40 and a couple of co-morbidies, but no clinicals were documented!! Just what I wrote on the paperwork at the surgeon's office. As strange as all of this was to me, I am grateful to be approved. It is insane to read about people on here with the same insurance who are jumping through hoops to get approved when there's those of us who get approved with very little effort. I know it boils down to what your company will agree to pay for (and with a weight loss surgery exclusion on the policy, it keeps the rates down...or so sayeth my human resource dept. ). I was glad my husband was offered UHC. We pay double what we were paying for Aetna and we have a $4000.00 out-of-pocket max for the family, but it still beats trying to pay cash for this surgery. Good luck to all of you out there "fighting the fight". I wish you the best and hope for your speedy approval.

Don't be scared. You will succeed with this surgery. I am 11 mos. post-op and lost more than 100% of my excess weight. I am now skinny, and even though I thought I'd have more loose skin, it's contracted pretty well for someone of my age (61) so you'll be surprised at how your body can suck back the skin. And if you need loose skin taken off after you're all done losing, that can be done in Mexico with Dr. Bello. IDK who your surgeon will be, but I'll assume this is being done in the USA. I went to Dr. Aceves in Mexicali, who is excellent, and the cosmetic doctor he refers to is Manual Bello, MD, who operates out of the same private hospital as Dr. Aceves. Where there is a will, there is a way, is my fav saying. I wish you the best. If you don't get ins. approval for sleeve surgery, my best advice would be to self-pay and go see Dr. Aceves. I don't work for him and have no association, he's just a great guy and doctor. Keep coming back here for more support on your journey.:biggrin0:

Welcome. I too had my surgery with the Glasgows. Mine was on 7/26. I was alot heavier than you though. I started at 324 and now I'm 249 - down 75! I actually like the exercising part - though my exercise is all walking - and a little bit of eliptical. I bought an MP3 player - so I listen to great walking music and escape every time I walk. I don't want to think about how slow the weight loss would be without the exercising. I walk between 4 to 5 miles per day. Do you go to the support groups. If so, maybe I'll see you there. Good luck.

Just wanted to write and say....you are going to do good at this! God is going to take care of you and I pray He gives you a peace about the surgery. I know He will be with us all. I too have major depression and I have Bipolar. I am doing well on these meds and my psychiatrist said take them they night before surgery and I shouldn't have any complications. My psychiatrist first recommended this surgery as I have gained 120 lbs in 4 years due to psych meds and increased appetite. Trust in Him in all things! I am praying for us all.....

NO WL on pre-op Liquid diet??
Htx_Pepper replied to IveyinKY's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost nothing on the pre-op. i found it to be very unrealistic. I gave it 110% for 4 days before i cheated. If i cld lose weight on my own i wldnt need lap band. Its impossible to go cold turkey overnight. Even with sitting outside during lunch where people arent eating was difficult.. When the nurse called 3days before my surgery date to give me the arrival time she asked how was the preop diet goin and i told her terribly!! She said as long as i hadnt gained from the last visit it wld be fine. August 1 my surgery went off without a hitch. I paid outta pocket for the procedure so idk if it wldve been different if my insurance was paying. I know the insurance companies come with certain stipulations. And idk get why some doctors require the preop and others do not. The only thing tht wld get ur surgery cancelled is eating the night before U must go on a 12 hr fast im talkn not even a drop of Water from brushing ur teeth 12hrs before surgery. Now that will have them send u packing!
