    Spasms after WLS

I had that too. I think I only had it for the first week. I didn’t take anything. Mine only lasted a few seconds and then would ease up.
  2. Man, I can't believe there's another guy with an MGB here! Thanks for posting, too. So here's what I've experienced: at 6 months or so, you start definitely having 'room' for more food - that feeling of complete satiety you feel now starts sloooowly waning. But at the same time, your body starts sending you clear signals it wants protein and veggies - and sometimes something quicker to burn, because you've dipped too low in calories. At least that's how my body talks to me, still. Google "post gastrectomy syndrome". It's kinda how we work. You get steered to something that looks like a Mediterranean diet, and your hunger will tell you if you've had enough. No hunger - stick to plan; more hunger - eat a little more, you're too low. It's very noticeable. My body wanted to stay at exactly 93.5 kg for a good while. On mornings of 93.2, I'd be hungry. Mornings on 93.8, not hungry at all. Then it decided 90ish was probably more to its taste, lost 2.2 kg/5 lbs in literally a week, just three weeks ago. Out of nowhere. Now that's where it wants to be. Again, you won't doubt the signals, that's one of the beautiful features of specifically MGB - the connection between eating and hormonal response is SUPER quick and 1:1. This might make more sense in 5 months or so, but just follow your plan, and let's talk when you get to that point. Final important thing for all MGB'ers (and maybe others, I don't know): you'll probably think "ok this is it" a lot during the journey. Hunger returns, you're having a hard time sticking to your calorie limit etc. But then it re-starts when the body is ready and it's super easy. And so on. I've had 6-7 of such start-stop experiences, and some day soon, it'll be the last. And that's fine. I'm at a good weight now. What I wanted to say: don't stress. You've got a great surgery. I felt completely normal at your stage, too - just satiated all the time Edit: just out of curiosity, how long is your bypass? Mine is 220 cm / 7.2 feet.
  3. Thanks so much for posting all this. I’m one of those rare “dudes” here who just had the MGB 3 weeks ago tomorrow. I’ve lost 23 lbs. that’s good I imagine. Go to Dr next week for my 1st post surgery appointment. ive been very confused as to how and what I can or should eat once I get through this initial 4 week post op period. lots of mixed messages on these forums so hearing it laid out by another guy is a big help. I would like to know that once you hit the weight that you should be at, I need to lose another 85 lbs or so, how do you “return to a more normal eating life” and not continue to lose weight? That make sense? as I go along this new road, I will contact you if I have issues but so far I e had none of the typical post op things most folks do. by the way, I am 68 so it’s never too late to change your life. Goal is to eliminate future orthopedic issues in the lower extremities. thanks again for all this.
  4. I wouldnt worry to much seeing how you were only required 1 week of pre op i am guessing you are at the lower end bmi, i had hungry jacks 2 nights before surgery and didnt stick to my pre op 100% but i should have seen that as a red flag that i wasnt ready 😞
  5. I felt blue for a while too! I read somewhere that any anaesthesia carries this risk and couple that with feeling tired, trying to recuperate after major surgery all the while you struggle to drink let alone eat? It’s a perfect cocktail for those feelings to arise. I felt MUCH better a week later, and would really encourage you to reach out to your loved ones so they can support you through this 💕 Be kind to yourself, be proud of yourself! You took a major step that took a lot of courage 💕

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

So my doctor never put me on a post diet. He said eat what ever you want. your gonna lose weight. April 12th and I’m a hundred pounds down. My goal is ten more pounds. but I haven’t lost any weight in 6 weeks. I can eat a whole sandwich. But then I’m stuffed. im active but I don’t go to the gym. seems like everyone but me had a good plan for post op

    Upcoming Surgery Advice

Everyone is different, but for me the answers to both questions are a resounding YES. I can eat whatever (except excess sugar), but not at “normal” portions. If i had to guess, I probably eat about 1/3 of what an “normal” heathly, similar-sized person eats in VOLUME. But calorie-wise, its almost the same (i eat about 1800-2000 cals a day on average these days). And yeah, its not all diet food (as i sit here with espresso martini in hand and a small container of cashews i plan to eat after i drink this). I go out to eat at least once a week (more, pre-pandemic, as well as during summer with outdoor dining) and order what i want...especially now that i dont avoid carbs like the plague anymore, lol. I always have take home leftovers if my companions did not already eat my leftovers. I also drink regularly (mostly red wine or vodka with Kahlua or Clamato) You may be able to do the same, or you may not. This is something you will find out through trial and error. P.S. i was going to restaurants/parties with food at 3 post-op Granted, I barely ate anything (if at all!) those early days, but it was just about the company for me anyways. P.P.S. I am a little over 3 years out and have been maintaining below goal weight for 2.5 years. I’m 5’2” 116.5 lbs this morning. Im relatively active. Good Luck! ❤️

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Oh my. I bet that's frustrating. I had a couple long pauses. The longest one was 2.5 weeks. I tried my best to not get too frustrated because I didnt want to trigger emotional eating in response to my frustration. Good luck.

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

The last few weeks my weight loss slowed some. I was able to go from 4 ounces to around 5.5 per meal. So. Perhaps eating a little more played a role. Plus, I added two starches - sweet potato and wraps. I was not eating any starch at all. Just protein and veggies. Now, I might eat some sweet potato in a day or I might eat a turkey roll up. I cant eat much of the wrap because it fills me up. That's it really. I fluctuate like .2 to .4 ounces in weight. I'm good with that. I met with the dietitian Monday and the NP. They said our bodies get to a point they slow down when they kind of get to a resting weight for us. I wanted to be like 3 pounds lower than a goal so I would have some wiggle room for fluctuating. I'm 2 pounds down and cool with it. I dont want to be any smaller in size. I dont want to look weirdly or oddly small. So. I'm good here. Congrats on only being 20 pounds away from goal. Good luck!

    Other Protein Alternatives

I found early on that shakes were not going to be a staple for me. After 2 weeks of having 5 a day preop, followed by 4 weeks of having them multiple times a day post op I was more than done with them. I am not someone that likes to eat sweet things that often, plus, I developed some dairy issues after surgery. I tried the protein waters, but, did not like how my mouth felt afterwards. After talking with my surgeon, he is totally fine with these not being a staple in my diet. I focus on getting my protein in via food I chew. The things I turn to most often are - egg whites (I have an intolerance to whole eggs), all types of meats and seafood in all different forms cooked in a variety of ways, Quest chips, protein bars (occasionally), cheese, magic spoon cereal, beans, unflavored protein powder added to soups or fat free refried beans. I easily hit my goal of 60-80 grams a day. I do have some non dairy shakes I keep in the house for the rare times I don't have any time to grab a non shake options, but, I honestly try to avoid doing this as much as possible.
  13. I just learned about protein water this week! What kinds have you tried? I start my strict pre-op diet next week, and I'm thinking I'll give some protein water a try.
  14. I'm scheduled for December 29! I'm in the phase where I am cautiously excited and still sort of feeling like I can't believe it's happening. I'm getting nervous and also chomping at the bit. I'm all over the place! LOL. My doctor has a protocol of 2-week strict diet before surgery. I start that on the 14th. On the 21st it goes to full liquid diet. A little nervous about that, but I know I can do it.
  15. 13 days until surgery and my husband comes home sick last night he says it is just allergies from moving hay for our horses I was going to sleep in the couch but he assured me it was allergies. He just sent me a text he is really sick - he had Covid end of July I am hoping it isn’t that again he says cold either way I get sick I can’t get the surgery and I’ve been in liquid for over 2 weeks now I am beyond upset and frustrated today

    Sick all the time

strictures get progressively worse pretty quickly, to the point you can't even keep fluids down. At that point, it's an emergecy. I had two of them (at weeks 4 and 😎 eight (not sure why that emoji is there). It only took a few days before I couldn't keep water down.
  17. You look amazing! What great progress. Congrats! I second what you said about taking the photos. I have been in a stall, but finally took a new set of pics and wow I could tell the difference 4 months out, and in some unexpected places! For those who don't want to do near naked pics, wear something really form fitting (ideally in colors/patterns that don't distort things/distract the eye) and then take the pics in the same outfit until you can't anymore because they are falling off. I find it is easier to compare photos when I am in the same outfit. It was quite motivating even when struggling with that obnoxious month 3 stall...
  18. I had my husband take photos of all three sides of me once a month on my surgery date until I hit maintenance 20 months later. I'm SO glad I have those photos! GooseyGirl is correct - you don't always see the difference month to month, but you can by comparing photos to ones that were taken three or four months earlier. Plus I love having the photo documentation of my journey!

    Baristatic App?

If your surgeon participates, they can get a code and you can link your account to them so they have access to all your information directly. If not, there is a report function that will email you a .pdf of weight, steps, and some very detailed nutrition data, including about a week of daily logs.

    Bliss

I'm day 22 and this time last week I was eating just purees, about 1/4 - 1/3 cup 2 or 3 times a day. Mostly whatever my family was having for dinner (I cook everything from scratch here) really well blended with broth or gravy. And I was spitting out anything that didn't blend properly just to be on the safe side (gristle from meat etc.) Smooth oatmeal with apple sauce about 1/3 cup total for breakfast or supper. Chicken soup with added protein powder for lunch. About 4-5 small portions of something spread over the day. I still had a protein shake every morning and I was drinking loads of coffee with milk and added skimmed milk powder - that's about 4g protein per mug. I started soft foods yesterday and boy is it filling compared to purees! I'm actually going to have to time it carefully to make sure I get my fluids in too - couldn't face anything for about 2.5 hours after my fish pie filling last night (about two tablespoons, LOL). If anyone had told me this a few weeks ago I would have laughed at them. I know exactly what you mean about the sleeping position I almost cried with joy the first time I could lie on my side again. Sounds like you're doing really well! 👊
  21. I’m 2 months post op. Still not used to eating slow or knowing exactly when to stop.. as a result I have been throwing up a lot the past two weeks Last week I felt a lot of pain in my stomach but it was gone within two days This week I’m feeling a sharp pain on the left side of my stomach 😔 it feels like the wound is burning on the inside.. it really feels like fire.. I feel something sharp when I lie down in certain positions My skin on that part of my body hurts to the touch I can’t go see a doctor as I’m not insured right now I know it’s because I threw up a lot but what do you think I should do from home to relieve the pain

    Baristatic App?

I switched to baritastic after my old app (SparkPeople) shut down and switched to spark America and didn’t allow for tracking. I miss being able to track more vitamins and minerals, especially with a vitamin d deficiency. I’ve never like the MFP interface so I only used it for like a week, while I’ve used the baritastic app for several months at this point, even while on maintenance to keep track of what I can.
  23. So I just finished clear liquid phase for a week and now for the next 3 weeks I am on "full liquids" Though I have no hunger and most of the time I feel full and not wanting to eat. Do I still go on about eating my meals on regular intervals even if I feel kinda full? I have my dietician appointment in about 2 weeks. But till then I just have to follow the schedule.
  24. I love so called medical people who don’t understand what being a vegetarian (even quasi) is. 🤷🏻‍♀️😱. Try beans & lentils as a source of protein, like you probably often did. Add them to your soups & blend them up till super smooth (strain after to be super sure). Many find anything that’s not super smooth too harsh to swallow & tolerate at first so go slowly. As a quasi vegetarian do you eat meat stocks? If so bone broths & the broths in pho, wonton soups, etc are also good protein options but only drink the broth part of course. Generally you can purée most things if you add enough liquids (stock, broth, gravy, milk, water).. Just doesn’t always taste pleasant but it’s only two weeks.

One week post op and 1 day.

I’m 5 weeks post op. I’m dealing with acid reflux, nausea and gas pains. It really tough. The nausea is the worst one deal with cause I’m only able to drink water, Gatorade2, Pedialyte and chicken broth. Today I had wicked gas pains and nausea. My doctor called in a prescription for Zofran and I can take 1 Alka-Seltzer antacid Heartburn relief chews. I’m hoping this will help me. My doctor did remind me that some of the nausea is related to me recovering from the rectus sheath hematoma which happened around 7 to 12 days after my surgery.
