Quick Poll - best purer food to start on!
Inner Surfer Girl replied to smileygal's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I didn't have puréed. My plan was 1 week clear liquid, 1 week full liquid, and one week soft foods. The foods that probably would fit well in your purée stage (but you need to check your program) that worked best for me were: Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and refried Beans. -
Hi congrats on your choice on being healthy I am 15 months post opt and have no issues cooking for my family , you will be able to eat real food again as time progress the challenge is you making the choice to eat healthy and with portion control. Learning how to eat again may be fearful for you now because after the surgery you have no desire to eat but after time you will eat again and learn what you like and do not like, i know for me I hated yogurt now I eat two greek yogurt every day you will see that your taste buds will changed. Good luck.

Mrswrath replied to sallydswanson's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I measure everything as well and dinner takes me 1 hour to eat 3 tbs of food like cottage cheese or yogurt - also the same amount of time to eat 3 oz of meat. I Need to eat a bite and wait 10 mins. I had surgery aug 3. And feel like I am chasing my protein all day. -
I get a lot of my daily protein from chicken, eggs, cheese, and yogurt. Those are my main sources.

Protein, water vs calorie intake.
mtraverse replied to Pinkpeonies1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 3 months out and do 2 shakes most days. I also eat a lot of Greek yogurt. Sometimes I will add unflavored protein powder to up the protein intake. It's a good way to add 15gms easily. I like the pure protein shakes that are already made. They taste great and you get 30gms protein in 160cals -
Protein, water vs calorie intake.
jess9395 replied to Pinkpeonies1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Do some searches on here for favorite Protein shakes and do some taste tests! There are hundreds out there I'm sure you can find one you like. Took me a LONG time and I don't like most of the ones people on here rave about, but I just kept tying! Personally I like the Syntrax Matrix ones (mint cookie and Peanut Butter cookie are my favorite) and the BSN syntha 6 ones (Mochaccino, orange cream and vanilla milkshake). Keep trying! At your stage I was doing two most days and Greek yogurt to get my calorie and protein count up. -

Normal for me. I am 5 weeks out and soups, yogurts, cottage cheese etc go down a lot easier than chicken, fish etc etc. I am still on 2oz of protein and I am usually full after that. It's very rare that I even take one bite of veg. -
Stuck and severely depressed. Need help.
Djmohr replied to meyouus's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@ You are doing fantastic so far don't get discourage. I am wondering about the volume you are eating at one sitting. 1 cup to 1 1/2 cups would actually cause me to be over full and get sick. I can maybe get a cup in at 11 months post op and it really depends on what I am eating. For example I can eat a whole container of yogurt which is 6 ounces but I am full afterwards. I could never eat 6 oz. of meat. Especially if it a dense meat like chicken, beef or pork. I am lucky to get in 3 oz. If I am eating salad then I can eat close to 1.5 cups depending on what Protein is in there. I can eat 1/2 cup cottage cheese with a couple of strawberries. When you say protein laden, can you give some examples of what that looks like? It might help us help you. Also you may need to consider eating 5 smaller meals spread out throughout the day and no Snacks. I know it sounds weird but sometimes you just have to change things up as in your routine.our bodies get used to the same things and then stall. Good luck to you and please don't get discouraged, the weight will come off. I lost the most weight in the first 8 weeks and then everything slowed down. I now lose between 8 and 12 lbs a month. And I have had a whole month where I lost nothing. Yet in the end I have lost 119lbs in 11 short months. -
Throwing up a lot, need advice
FocusOnMeNow replied to marypups's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@ - so is your problem that you don't want to vomit or is your problem how to log the calories that you vomitted so you can eat some more? 1. Slow down: 2 oz of turkey and 1 oz of cheese may be quite too much if you have a 2 oz stomach perhaps need to slow it down to 1 oz of turkey and 1 oz of cheese - over a few minutes - try to split that up into as many bites as you can - I'm guessing you could get three bites of each - three minutes apart 2. Most other posters I see on here say once you throw up its best to go back to liquids for the rest of the day to let your tummy recover 3. If its actually nausea that's causing you to vomit then think about zofran or some other anti-emetic. Also, while you should follow what your NUT and Dr. recommend, guidelines vary and I am not allowed to start solids until 8 weeks out. So if you are on solids that does not mean you have to be on ALL solids. Maybe try solids for lunch and dinner (2 oz at a time) and go back to mushies for breakfast and liquid "snacks" if your plan allows for between meal snacking. As I have not experienced first hand yet, but seen on these boards...just because your NUT says you can advance to try eating chicken, does not mean your stomach is ready to handle chicken. So maybe start with 1 oz. and if that works try 2 oz the next time. If you barf after 3 oz then sounds like yes you are eating too much. My NUT also advised that I should not be using my stomach as a measuring cup, but rather measure my portions in advance according to the guidelines they set. I am the first one to admit that I do not stick to the serving size for pureed Soups. I can eat 8 or more oz of Soup, which scares me a little, but even with that I'm still within 800 calories. If you need to supplement your Protein there are other things besides "shakes" if you hate them. Fairlife milk, greek yogurt, etc. I hope this helps. -
Yuck. Sick of shakes!
esskay77 replied to Be_pretty_epic's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you tried unjury? THey have some that are flavorless. I have heard they are good. I get mine from food--FF greek yogurt, FF cottage cheese, etc. Note that I a a year and a half out which is why it is easier to get all my Protein from food. Early on, it is difficult. -
Aussie girl sleeve Fri 28 August!
smileygal replied to smileygal's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Still all good. Home sweet home! Loved yogurt today! Still having occasional wind pains and can feel the gas running around my body. Some diarrhea today as well but guess that's expected after only fluids. A little disappointed I came out of hospital at same weight but it's only been 2 days after all!! -
Christian sleevers any the just had...
tosham12 replied to lachellove's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@@lachellove it's silly, like I'll start feeling down for no reason. Then I'll be excited for the future. It goes back and forth. I feel like there's more to it then just the surgery itself, I am staying with my parents because I have a 16 month old and I can't lift him for 6 weeks. So I'm not recovering at home. My parents are awesome but I miss home & my hubby. So I'm sure that plays a lot into it. Plus, it's hard to feel so restricted sometimes & eat the same stuff. However, this week should be easier as I can add yogurt, cottage cheese and scramble eggs. -
Had My Surgery Tuesday August 25th
SafetyKate replied to DrewzWife's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sleeved on the 25th. Bad nausea the first day but otherwise manageable. Don't know how anyone gets all the protein in. I've been getting the fluid in fine but seriously struggling with the protein. Ate something other than isopure and protein broth today. Tried Greek yogurt For breakfast - yum but can't eat much. Had high protein very liquid oatmeal for dinner with flax milk - tasty but incredibly filling. No real gas till now - guess real food equals real gas. -
Pre-Surgery Diet - What's yours
Misha_Lynne replied to magicalwoman's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Went grocery shopping for the 2 week pre-op diet and here's a pic of all, except 1% milk, 0 fat Greek yogurt, and premade protein shakes in fridge. This is unsweetened applesauce, sugar free pudding, sugar free gelatin, cream of wheat, grits, steel cut oatmeal, sugar free water flavors and unflavored/unsweetened, plain stevia sweetened, and chocolate protein powders. (Yes, I am a bit OCD, but aren't we all a bit!) -
Acid reflux vs pureed foods
MrsRoboto replied to hopeful_loser13's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
This sounds insane to me! Not to mention pretty gross. And why the heck would they suggest a bun?? I'm dying to know what other "recipes" are in your book. For purées I did stuff like greek yogurt, cottage cheese, tuna, refried Beans, ricotta with marinara, a scrambled egg with cheese. I could only eat 2oz at a time, 4oz for the runnier stuff like yogurt. -

jess9395 replied to VSGAnn2014's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
quick hi-jack @@Miss Mac haven't talked to my NUT in a llllllong time (she was never helpful) i was wondering about protein shakes i usually do have one for breakfast i love my swiss chocolate protein shake (25 gr of protein!!) why are Proteins in food better??? i have heard to get protein from real food don't understand why shakes are no longer good/recommended to drink for us VETS thanx kathy Kathy I am right there with ya and have a hard time getting enough calories and protein in without my shake or two a day! I think the idea is the same one behind eating clean, unprocessed foods--protein shakes are processed by definition and ideally we would all eat whole clean unprocessed foods. Plus getting protein from dense food can keep you full longer than drinking your calories IF that is an issue for you. My medical professionals are fine with me continuing the shakes in maintenance and I do add frozen fruit or yogurt to them, it's part of my plan and it works for me and meets my nutritional needs well. -
Post op diet Clueless
geronimo replied to Ourlifecomplete's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, I can't believe your Weight Loss Surgery team would give you the surgery and then release you without telling you what your post-op diet should be. That seems pretty terrible of the surgical staff and NUT. I just had surgery on the 25th, so we're in a similar boat. If it helps, I can tell you what my NUT ordered for me: Stage 2 Diet Protein Shakes & Calorie-Free Liquids Daily diet will be ~900 calories, and 100+ grams of protein. Primary goal is to drink 48-64oz (or more) of Water and other calorie free and non-caffeinated fluids every day. Other goal is to drink 2oz of protein supplement every hour for a total of ~32oz per day (approx. 4 protein shakes). For protein shakes, use egg white, soy, or milk isolate (do not use a blend or concentrate). Be sure to mix with 1% lactose free milk or unsweetened soy milk (do not mix with water). Examples of the 64oz of hydrating fluids: Water, Crystal Light, Powerade Zero, sugar-free Koolaid, Decaf coffee, chicken and Beef broth, Pho Broth, Unsweetened, decaffeinated herbal or black tea, etc. Examples of liquids to AVOID: yogurt, tomato soup, cream soup, pudding, Jell-O, V-8, juicing your own juice or pureed items. Example schedule of daily intake (2oz liquid Protein supplement every hour for 16 hours per day = 32oz per day): 8am - 2oz protein 8:15am-9am - 4-6+oz hydrating fluids 9am - 2oz protein 9:15am-10am - 4-6+oz hydrating fluids 10am - 2oz protein 10:15am-11am - 4-6+oz hydrating ... etc. Hope this helps, but please reach out to your personal NUT and demand they tell you what your post-op diet should be! -

What to Expect During Year Two After the Sleeve
VSGAnn2014 replied to VSGAnn2014's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Don't worry about any of that stuff at three weeks. I think you're doing fine for now. I certainly was not doing many veggies and fruits or fiber at that point. And 5 ounces of mushies is fine. No problem. But real, hard, dense food would probably be a challenge. Mostly, just do right now what your team is asking you to do. And no, 800 calories a day is not too much right now IMHO. Just trust me when I say that a year out you'll be able to eat as much as I am. A typical day looks like this: Breakfast - Protein shake (I still love GNC Lean 25 shakes) Morning snack - Wasa crackers, cheddar cheese lunch - turkey / cheese sandwich (on whole-grain bread); baby raw carrots Afternoon snack - sliced apple, cheddar cheese dinner - grilled salmon brushed with BBQ sauce, green Beans, brown rice, 4 ounces chardonnay Dessert - blueberries and peach, Greek vanilla yogurt (The above is just a simple, healthy way to eat, without spending all day cooking or meal-planning) For now, just focus on eating as well as you can for the phase you're in. Dream about being slim and healthy. (I still dream about that, and then wake up and find I'm living the dream!) -
Such a learning curve... Now the hard part begins
maggie409 replied to maggie409's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
In looking at my food log more closely, I also figured out I was getting way too many carbs and calories with my supplement. I was using liquid multi and Calcium and Iron and B12 from a health food store. I added it up and I was getting 65 calories and 13 carbs daily with my supplements. They were sweetened with natural fruit juices. I went back to the store and found a chewable iron and a calcium gelcap and now my intake from supplements is 35 calories and 7 carbs. I may eventually replace my liquid multi-Vitamin but it packs such a nutritional punch that I hate to give it up. Also thanks for the tips on the fruit and Popsicles. I have modified my intake to just include berries and not quite so many. Also keeping my Popsicles to just 1 a day and the same for my yogurt to just 1 a day. I will look for the lower carb brands also of yogurt. In addition I have learned a lot about cheese. I have cut cheese out but the next time I go to the store I will see if I can find something with a lower fat content. As for my Peanut Butter (which I love!) I have started having that as more of a treat. I will now have 1/2 a slice of toast with a teaspoon of PB with some decaf coffee. I love coffee and PB. Definitely learning that healthy natural foods don't necessarily mean I can have all I want. There are still smart choices to be made with these foods as well. I am now focusing on my Proteins and fresh veggies first. Thanks for everyone's amazing advise!
