  1. I'm getting desperate for answers. I am truly happy with the results of my choice to have gastric sleeve surgery. But I do have a problem. I had gastric sleeve surgery Nov 20th 2014. After two months sometime before Christmas I started to get a burning nagging sensation in my upper back along my rib cage. It is now 9 months since my surgery and I have lost around 110 lb. The back pain has been getting worse as I lose more weight. It is now getting unbearable. The pain starts in my upper back along the outer part of my ribs away from my spine and as the day goes on it moves down and starts moving around the sides of my ribs. The pain is a burning aching pain that can become unbearable towards the end of the day. It increases with activity. At the end of the day after I get home and get comfortable in a recliner it's fine. I have been to a pulmonologist and had a cat scan. My lungs and bones are said to be fine, no sign of cancer. I have been to my PC several times in the past 6 months, had all my blood work with nothing out of the ordinary. I have also been to my chiropractor. No one can figure this out. Please reply with any ideas that you might have. Thanks in advance. Tom
  2. Well, it finally happened! I entered into ONEDERLAND & and hit the -60 lbs. milestone today, which happens to be my 6-month anniversary! How amazingly fitting! I've been on the cusp for the past 2 weeks, hitting the scale w/great anticipation (if that's possible), thinking, "OK, today may be the day." It wasn't meant to culminate until today, and I think that's pretty cool. I can tell the weight loss is beginning to slow somewhat, and I realize that's to be expected (though it is hard to embrace the idea!). However, I'm extremely excited about just being able to wear blue jeans again (size 13-14 even!). I went for YEARS w/o going outside of the house in jeans b/c they looked so hideous. Not any more! For me, that was an incrdible NSV. And, of course, feeling my confidence grow daily is absolutely an amazing thing. Thank you God! PTL

    Still a long time away!

Also important to remember that statistics are just that. They are not reflective of individual's success but an average. MOST people only lose that percentage of their excess weight....not everyone. My doctor said his patients ranged in weight loss from 28 lbs to over 200 lbs and that it really depends on the commitment level of the patient above all else -- even with bypass. Good luck!
  4. I was turned down twice even though I have sleep apnea and back and foot problems. I fought it, and papers after papers they wanted from different doctors. I was so angry because my struggle with weight was ongoing for over 14 years. I did program after program and went up and down like a yo-yo. The clinic I worked with was very helpful and put together a convincing proposal of how medically necessary it was and after 7 months finally got the approval. My main problem was my BMI being too low but they wanted to be blind to the declining health conditions. Don't give up, there must be something you havent thought of, make a list of all the health conditions you have due to your weight, and all the different things in the past that you have done on your own and try again. Good Luck
  5. There are two reasons they want you to lose weight. 1) to prove to them that you are capable of losing weight on your and 2)they want to shrink your liver to prevent them from possibly damaging it. You can still gain your weight back with any weight loss surgery. It still takes will power to lose weight and they need to know that you are committed to this new lifestyle. Of course at first you will not gain weight because of the surgery but if you fall back into your bad habits the surgery was for nothing. I am, after 4 1/2 months able to eat food. I still fear I might gain weight even though I can't eat much at a time I still stay hungry and I want to eat. I have to remind myself not to do bad.
  6. The automatic toilet flushers at the movie theater flush quickly! I guess my butt has gotten smaller - I'm used to the delay and it scared the crap outta me! = )
  7. Hi all, New member happy to join. I just received insurance approval today. I'm so nervous. What is going to happen now? I have been thinking about it nonstop since the call... Omg. Am I ready to be a different person physically. It's odd. I spent 36 years hiding behind this extra weight. Now it's like everyone's going to see me. I know I'm ranting... Is it odd that the first thing to pop into my head after the call was "hey I finally got some big girl thigh high boots, what am I going to do with them?" I guess I should be asking real questions. How long from approval to surgery? Thanks for letting me rant. Jojo
  8. Hello fellow bariatric surgery patients! I own a company that assists patients in appealing for denied surgical procedures and medications under health insurance benefits. Currently my company is competing in a competition sponsored by Chase bank. We are hoping to gain enough votes to move forward in hiring more nurses to expand more services to patients in all areas. If you could click on the link below or vote for Benefit Defender on the Chase Mission Main Street Grant website, I would appreciate the votes. If you have questions involving insurance denials you could message me here as well and I can attempt to provide you some insight that might be helpful in gaining help with bariatric coverage under your insurance coverage. https://www.missionmainstreetgrants.com/b/25689 Benefit Defender - Chase Mission Main Street Grants Vote for Benefit Defender at https://www.missionmainstreetgrants.com/b/25689 - Chase's Mission Main Street Grants program for Small Business is in full swing! Gained weight

It's not unusual to gain weight before your first fill so don't worry too much (it definitely happened to me). The goal of the band is to put pressure at the top of your stomach to tell your brain you're full with less food. You'll need some fills to get to that point. Make sure you follow the dr's orders and eat slow!

    baby asprin?

Losing weight, getting healthy and getting plenty of cardiovascular exercise is probably a safer way to prevent heart disease!
  11. Hello and welcome!! What a wonderful PaPa you are!! All of us revision folks know what you mean about the band. We all have different stories about how we became overweight, but the bottom line is that the band is just not a good tool for sustained weight loss. I am really happy your approval process is going well. Good luck and keep us posted!!

    Intermittent fasting

I would say don't worry about the calories you are doing great, you will see, stay the path! Wouldn't worry about starvation mode, if you go back and look up IF and that subject area, you will see body really doesn't go into starvation mode until 2-3 days... They say that was kind of a myth to go into it so soon, and you are EATING. In reality starving is getting NOTHING with calories, lol... Go 2 weeks as you are and see the weight fall off... I have been doing IF for 5 weeks and weight is falling off, down 15 of the 25 pounds I trying to lose that weight gained back after 3 years post sleeve... Great thing about IF is that you eat whatever you want and as you said you really won't eat much but all cravens for whatever you want are met, even if you only get a few bites of it... It sure beat 10 small meals a day and all other diets, which this really isnt! Loving that I don't snack all day because I'm just drinking coffee and water and know one knows what I'm doing, lol.. Just my 2 cents...[emoji16] Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Dr. Moran in Raleigh ROCKS!

Dr. Enochs is the best in my experience but to each their own. I wish everyone the best. I have heard great successes from both sides but I felt Dr. Enochs is more personable. Plus he had more experience and better weight loss results. Best wishes, can't wait to hear your story!
  14. They use the weight that your doctor took during your initial consultation.

Thank You! Still working at the weight loss. hopefully a year from now i will have my current after pics as my before pics and be at goal. Slow journey as i'm sure you know. You did GOOD!!! You look AMAZING! Also love your hair short and blond....so cute!!
  16. @@Eclectick if I read the OP right she IS losing a half pound a week (.5) not 5 lbs per week. Weight loss does slow eventually. If you have access to a dietician through your surgeon's practice, you may want to see if they have tips for you. Or you may find that eventually your weight loss picks up again on its own -- sometimes there are slow downs and speed ups, and you can't really control them. I was eating under 800 calories per day at that point, but I eventually (about 9 months out) bumped it up to 1000 calories per day and found that my weight loss picked up a little when it did that. There is no one right answer for everyone -- you just need to experiment and find what works for you -- assuming you aren't working with a dietician that you trust. If you are, do what they say
  17. Heyyy! Well in 4 weeks, 15 lbs is a lot so congrats! Keep on trucking and the weight will continue to drop. Are u measuring urself too?

    Excercise

By the way, that doesn't mean that for me, personally, that I believe weight loss is won in the kitchen, rather than the gym. (It's probably different for everyone!) It just means for me, I must be scrupulous about both.

    Spin Bike

Spinning is great because you can go at your own level. Don't worry about the spastic person next to you cranking it as hard as they can trying to out-do the instructor (there's one in every class). Just go at the pace you feel comfortable with and try to push yourself occassionally. That is where you will see the gains in your fitness and endurance.
  20. Well its here...unfortunately..... I am down 80lbs in ten months. I am so thrilled! I have 20 more to go till goal. But I haven't lost even an ounce for two months! Haven't gained any either which is great. I work out almost two hours every day and switch it up often. And stay between 1100 & 1400 calories a day. What did you guys do to break that plateau? How long did it take to see the scale moving again? I'mTrying not to get too frustrated...byt two months is such a long time!
  21. What happens when two sleevers with ADD make a podcast? Exactly what you think. I'm Kristen, or @themorrigan.vsg and my cohost is Emily or @emilyamvsg. I'm 16 months out, and she's 6 years out. We've got a lot to talk about trust me. I'm a recovering Binge Eater, she's on a quest to find love while struggling with life after VSG, and we're just out here doing the thing, ya dig? We talk about weight, weight loss, weight gain, messed up childhoods, VSG, struggles and successes after surgery, being fat in the nineties, the soul crushing experience that is online dating, and to top it off, for the fellow Murderinos, we do ten minutes of True Crime at the end of every episode. Because they say stick to what you know. We want everyone who's going through all this, or about to, or just wants to kiki with us and share some giggles, to know that there's a podcast out there full of all the things you want to talk about but may not be able to. We sometimes have guests on to share their stories and backgrounds and experiences. We'll laugh, we'll get triggered, we'll ugly cry. We'll find out that the real treasure has been in our hearts all along. Or something. Get in losers - we're going podcasting! Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. After surgery you are swollen, fluid retention and all that good stuff and that can cause you to gain weight. I wouldn't worry about weight loss until after you are healed. The weight will start to come off, it just takes some a little longer than others.
  23. May 3rd will be two months into my 6 month pre surgical weight loss program. Im so excited. I have been meeting with the dietician and setting and making little goals. I decided that I need to prepare myself for my new way of life post op as much as I can now. Last week I went to a pottery shop with a friend and painted a small plate and bowl to use post op. It is just a smaller bowl and plate. So I can have this special thing to use and look forward to. They turned out really cool. They fired them in a kiln and protected them to make them dishwasher and food safe. Im also keeping a journal to record this journey. Question: How long were most of you off of work post op?

    lap band vs gastric bypass

I recently attended a seminar where the Doctor does both. His patiant ratio is about equal. Band to RNY. But what was interesting was that several(6 that I heard of) had gone from the band to the RNY within a year or more period due to the slow & sometimes minimal results. I struggled with my decision when viewing the b/a photos because the RNY people looked amazing. I personally feel that the larger complications w/Rny are from the many cuts made BUT also due to the fact that heavier people tend to go for this surgery & usually have MORE health risks to begin with. I don't know why certain Doctors choose one over another but I can guarentee that it has to do with the amount of study, office set up & over all compensation. Not necessarily which one they think truely is best over all. What I did see is that in both surgeries people can GAIN weight back if they are not careful. Rules must be followed in both cases. I personally think the band is a safer & as we all know, a reversable procedure that can be a great tool. I like the fact that with the band you are constantly cheking in with a Doctor & therefore over the first 1-2 years aware of any weight gain ahead of time. Most of all its more of a customized procedure. We all have such different levels that work for one another. With RNY is just chop, stitch & go. I will admit though that I like the built in behavioral mech.-dumping;0) I guess I will have to be strong & teach myself that one. The way I look at it is I truely wish I could have done this by myself. But with the band I still think I will get that same feeling (like I am doing it by myself) because I know it will be alot of hard work. Not that RNY isn't just that I think the band is more work, I really do. I know with the band alot of lessons will be learned about smart food choices & do's & don'ts. I want these lessons & I think they lead to a healthier life stlye over all. Either or I am so happy we live in an age that these scientific break-throughs are available. With that said, I only wish we could get spell check on this site:0) LOL LOL LOL

    post op weight gain

Help!!!! i had my band fitted July 09 and managed to lose 3st (42lbs) I have had 2 fills (5mls) and the last one of those was back in Oct 09, unfortunately I have regained 1st and am feeling really depressed about. I know what i need to do as far as the eating is concerned but struggle to find foods and the time to consider my menu. I have an office job which obviously means i am sat all day which doesnt help with the exercise side of things. I invested in a cross trainer recently and am trying to increase my exercise although the going is slow. I am getting another fill done on Mar 8th and am hoping this will quick start my weight lose again. basically what i want to know is has any one else experianced this problem and found that having another fill helped. I am so worried that it wont and just need a bit of encouragement....
