    Sleeve revision to bypass

I had my revision on Thurs 4/18. Besides gas pains the first two days, I’m doing well. I am a little worried that I don’t feel the restriction I did with the sleeve at the beginning. I can drink as much as I want without any pain.

Any August 2019 people out there?

As @vovo2013 mentioned, I would get the sleeve because of the reflux. I didn’t even have any issues with reflux but after my sleeve, I developed severe GERD and I’m now revising to the RNY mainly because of GERD. Whatever decision you make, I wish you great success and health!

    Australian Bandsters Chat Thread

Hi I am from Lakes Entrance, Vic and was banded last July at Latrobe Hospital. I have been having ongoing problems with diaphragm irritation pain even after revision surgery to move the tubing out from under my diaphragm. Has anybody else had this problem or heard of anyone who has. I am desperate for answers as even my surgeon has no idea what it causing it and I really dont want to have to have the band taken out!!!

    Surgery scheduled but nervous

Don't be scared. I had my lap band revision to bypass May 7. I was expecting this surgery to really take a toll on me, but it was not bad at all. I had minimum, very minimum pain and left day after surgery to go home. Only took Tylenol once. So excited for you!!
  7. 3 days post op from revision and hiatal hernia repair. Way more pain this time than before. My surgeon said I could try a protein shake tomorrow but I am having pain eating a sugar free jello. So far the best things have been sugar free Popsicles and twinings comfort tea with a little stevia. I am wearing a binder and using a cane to walk around the house due to the abdominal pain. I have not felt any gerd yet so hopefully it stays away.

    Newbie looking for Oct sleevers!

Live - I swear, we could easily turn this thread into an IVF thread with all the things we have been through. Yet lets hope this helps ! Are you going to wait a year before trying? I was told I had to. ... Oooh ! That's good there's a person here in the states that helps you ! I always wondered how that worked. Why did you decide on a revision of the band? (don't need to answer if you don't want to) Kelew - Keeping fingers crossed on the appeal !!!!!!!!

List of Band to Bypass Patients

Thanks, pebulz! The doctor said the revision from the band to the RNY is a higher risk and would cost more, but didn't go into anymore details. I hadn't put to much thought into the idea of there being a higher risk. I'll have to get more information when I visit with him. I need to make a list if questions about the risks of band revision to a RNY so I can be better prepared next time.
  10. I started my journey thinking I wanted the lapband. About 4 months after working with a nutritionist (insurance required a 6 month supervised diet), I had my first consultation with my surgeon. The surgeon told me that the risks and benefits of sleeve or bypass were much better than the lapband. Because of my GERD, he ordered an upper endoscopy. When I went for my 5th appointment with the nutritionist, I told her about what the surgeon had said. She then told me that a lot of her patients were failed lapband and that they were trying to qualify for a revision to the sleeve or bypass. Then the endoscopy showed I had the beginning of Barrett's Esophagus. Since only a bypass stops the progression of BE, that's why I chose bypass. Molly

  12. I had a sleeve done three years ago and will be going in for a revision to bypass in March. I really want to do more to keep myself on track, and thought about having a dedicated bullet journal just for this - goals, trackers, etc. Of course, I already use apps to track food and macros, water, step count, etc, but they are in different places and, having just started bullet journaling for another part of my life, I’ve realized how much I miss actually writing things down and having more space to write about high points and low points, as well as a place to keep photos, etc of my journey. I’ve done some research online but most bullet journals just have a one page spread for the month tracking exercise or water or whatever, there are very few ideas out there about setting up a journal for those of us going through bariatric surgery (pre- and post-op diets, liquid/purée/soft food stages, etc). Just curious if anyone out there has set up a journal for themselves and are willing to share the kind of spreads they made. I’m currently sketching out a few ideas and will share as soon as I can make them somewhat decent.

    April 2019 Surgeries!

My 10 day liver shrinking pre op diet starts tomorrow. It’s hard to believe I will having my revision surgery in 9 days. I am so ready to get it done and start living my new life. I have my shakes, crystal light mixes, sugar free jello and broths ready for the work day tomorrow! I usually do well throughout the day until 3pm ish when I start feeling that head hunger. I’m telling myself to keep busy at work because when I am busy I don’t even think about eating! Wish me luck!
  15. Was looking to see if their is a list anywhere of who is band to bypass and how long its been since they had the revision
  16. It's good to see so many are successful with band to sleeve revision. I need a bit more consistency for myself. The band does what the band wants as we know. Too tight one day, not enough the next, etc etc. I'm honestly tired of fighting it! Well I have to fight it for several more months but hopefully early next year I can get rid of it and I'll have the sleeve
  17. I'm having my gallbladder removed along with the revision from band to sleeve all in one too. My surgeon says it doesn't add any additional time so no need for me to worry.
  18. I'm in my 3rd month from my revision and I'm very happy with it so far. I've lost 35 lbs and I do have restriction even though my sleeve is not as small as a usual sleeve. The other day I pushed it and finished my plate and I did throw it back up. Otherwise I have not had a problem at all. I know not to do that now.

    Pasta and rice

Since my surgery, I cannot eat dried pastas or white, brown, red or black (forbidden) rice. But I CAN eat fresh pasta and wild rice and all wheat grains and many other grains. My understanding is that the ones I can't eat continue to expand after eating, and that's painful with a tiny stomach pouch. So, did some research. Rice and dried pastas can expand up to six times their dry volume either during cooking or after eating. Fresh pastas still are about halfway to the expanded volume before cooking and double when cooked, so are DONE EXPANDING when eaten, so won't cause pain or nausea when consumed. Rice pudding and risotto have also fully expanded BEFORE you eat them, so can also be eaten with no negative consequences. However, most rice dishes and pasta from dried have tripled in size before eating but will DOUBLE that INSIDE you. That's going to be bad. My research has found NOTHING about the discomfort being due to high carb content. If you are prone to short term dumping, high carbs can be a problem, but although I can't eat a whole hard candy, I can eat a plate of fresh pasta with cheese sauce ( my version of Mac and cheese, homemade) and it doesn't cause dumping. I only get dumping from fresh pasta if I don't consume enough protein with it. The problem with pasta is one of volume, not carbs. Wheat grains (wheat berries, spelt, kamut, einkorn, farro, emmer, cracked wheat, bulgur, and others) expand to only 3 times dry volume when cooked, so the expansion is done during cooking, and no more occurs after eating. The same is true of barley, quinoa, amaranth, teff, millet, kaniwa, buckwheat, and a bunch of other grains. So, they all can be substituted in recipes that call for rice. Wild rice isn't in the rice family, it's closer related to wheat and barley, do it also is done expanding during cooking so can be eaten without trouble. I use spelt when I make pork fried rice. I use wild rice instead of noodles in chicken soup. I use kamut or wheat berries instead of couscous. I do have to adjust cooking times, or liquid amounts to reflect what actually is being cooked, but the recipes come out tasty and healthy. My question for you all is, have you found any prepared pasta dishes you can eat? If not, try with fresh pasta. Btw, egg rolls wrappers are essentially identical to fresh pasta and can be used to make lasagna without needing prior cooking, and without over expansion inside you. Hopefully you can try some of these ideas and find out you have more food choices than you thought you did. I am 8 years out from Roux-En-Y surgery, with several revision surgeries as well, and gall bladder removal, and I am still at my target weight, 100 lbs. down from pre-surgery weight. It has NOT been easy.

    Insulin Worries after DS

From what I have seen, you may or may not be off of insulin and meds immediately - I think your surgeon is just being optimistic and won't actually discharge you without verifying your status. My wife was diabetic, just short of being insulin dependent and under treatment for it for around twenty years, and it took her the better part of a year to be fully off all of diabetic meds. The surgeon explained that generally, the longer one has been under treatment, the longer it takes to get off of the meds, though there are some long term diabetics who leave the hospital free of all meds, even with just a sleeve or RNY rather than the stronger DS. Her diabetes is still in remission 15-16 years later, despite some subsequent regain and losses. A few years ago, we talked to a woman in our support group who had an RNY some twenty years prior, and now her diabetes was coming out of remission with only some moderate regain, so she was in line to get that revised into a DS to knock it out for good. So, it is still very much worth getting the surgery even if you don't immediately go into remission. Note that I am referring to the "traditional" BPD/DS, which is known to have a 98-99% success rate with T2 diabetes, rather than the simplified SIPS/SADI/"Loop DS", which is not as well established.
  21. My two cents on the Shirley issue, she was a band to sleeve revision and had her sleeve done by Dr Pompa long before she was the main US coordinator for Betancourt/Dr.Almanza. Also she was definitely NOT fired. She QUIT! This is NOT hearsay from my part for sure! Thanks Stoongal for the FACTS!!!

  23. Thanks Stacey! The last time I wore a Petite size 8 I weighed about 118. And looks like that's within the range you mentioned for a person my height. I have a smallish frame - not big boned. But my muscle mass is lacking, I'm sure. Really have to work on that. I just noticed that I weigh about what you do now and I'm 5 inches shorter than you. So that sure tells me something. Are you a revision from the band? You're getting sleeved 7 days before me. I'm getting excited and you must really be feeling that way too. Is your doctor stateside or south of the border? Mine's local. Good luck with your surgery! I hope you'll feel like checking in after a couple of days so we can know how you're doing. I'm excited for you.

    feel crapy

Okay, I feel kind of like the elephant in the room and it's making me nervous. I'm only 5 days out and have so much energy that I'm nearly bursting at the seams. I had a sleeve and was in constant pain for two years and now after revising to the bypass my whole world spun around in one day. I now have zero pain with eating, nothing gets stuck, no nausea at all, nothing. I'm starting to wonder if my recovery is going to drop off and be more like what you are describing here. I literately got in my car today and had the engine on before I realized that I can't drive because I just had surgery..my family said it might be because I felt so bad before that now that I'm pain free it feels like I'm flying. I mean, I still have some soreness from surgery but seriously, I feel amazing. I'm getting enough Protein and Fluid down and let me just mention one more time that I am completely pain FREE! I never ever thought I would say that sentence this far out, I honestly think the hardest thing to do for me is to take it easy and not push myself so hard that I go backwards. Has anyone else experienced this? Am I going crazy?
