Post Sleeve Nutrition
AngelaWilliamsMD replied to LoosingIt67's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I assume they mean the sugary kind of yogurt with all the extra carbohydrates. -
According to the article here, there are foods that need to be avoided by sleevers: http://www.obesityhelp.com/articles/be-aware-of-creepy-calories cheese Peanut Butter coffee “add ins” Yogurt and granola Cereals/Cereal bars/Granola bars pretzels chips Baked goods Sweets puddings I'm a bit astounded by Yogurts. I've been having Yogurt (Fat Free Oikos, plain greek) with a soft boiled egg for Breakfast for the past 2 weeks. I've been losing weight. Since when have greek yogurts become bad calories, my doctor recommends them in his food plan. I also would like to open this topic up to nutrition, what do you eat throughout the day? what do you drink? Do you count calories, fat, carbs and Proteins? Inquiring minds want to know. -Happy Losing!

I am 4 months out and struggle with food portions quite a bit. Some days 1/2-1 cup is plenty but other days I am still hungry or 1/2 cup is way to much. I've found that it also depends on the food that I am eating. I am able to tolerate Soups, yogurts and fluids/shakes a lot better than other foods. They key is also eating slowly and allowing your brain to realize that you've eaten, feel full and satisfied. It's hard and I find that I have to pace myself still. It's easy to get back into the habit of eating quickly again. Definately a difficult habit to break. Oh and keep up the good work!!

Anyone have trouble getting enough calories?
rnsamantha replied to mataz78's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
How far out from surgery are you? I found for the first 4-6 weeks I was at 500 or less. Now I have started to get some hunger back and am working out. I typically eat between 700-900 daily now. I'm almost 10 weeks out. I do have to eat some snacks (cheese strings, yogurt) during the day in addition to my meals to get the calories up. I also drink a protein shake daily. My surgeon would like me to eat 1000 calories/day, but I find that hard to do with healthy choices simply because of stomach space/timing issues with water consumption! -
Seeking suggestions for post-op meals
smileygal replied to BeeGirl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Bee girl. For clear fluids I had a lovely clear chicken broth that was yum and lots of protein as well as sugar free Gatorade. You should also be allowed jelly but I didn't want to risk the solidness of it. Free fluids much easier - you can have protein shakes, smoothies with protein powder and drinking yogurt. I also managed a yogurt ice cream very slowly. When I started puree, runny porridge was yum, then I basically chucked whatever meat and veggie casserole the family was having into the blender. Just a few teaspoons was enough in the early days. The best news is you don't feel hungry and do feel full very quickly. Good luck !! -

I feel like I am starving
saflo438 replied to kaylie428's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am now 3 weeks post op. Went back to work after a week which I am thankful for because towards the end of the first week I was losing my mind. As someone else said, sugar free ice pops!! Oh my goodness did those help!! And I also didn't start puréed till 2 weeks out! My first 2 weeks were water, isopure juice, broth, and sf pops and sf jello. It was intense!! Now I can have puréed which is anything that is really already "chewed" for you. I really like egg drop soup, which also contains protein! Yay! And Oikos makes a 15g of protein yogurt. Once you go back to work, hopefully that keeps you busy! I totally feel ya. Keep busy, and think about why you did this. It's not going to be easy, but it's going to be worth it! Good luck!! -
September Sleevers
ExcitedNana replied to ANewMe9/21's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've got my sheets in the dryer now. They gave me a special body wash to use tonight and tomorrow morning and said to sleep on clean sheets tonight. All the laundry is done. Washing the bathroom rugs now. Funny how you get the nesting urge. At least I don't have to buy a lot of groceries! Tonight I'm going to my grandson's first football game of the season. I'm hoping it will help the nervousness. I took all my measurements and will take a picture tonight at game. I'm stocked up on yogurt, pudding and Protein drinks. I have to be at the hospital at 5:30 a.m. Surgery at 7:30. The Dr gave me a patch to put behind my ear to help with nausea after surgery. I've never heard of this but it makes sense. I'm to put it on tonight. That way it will be in my system when i get out of surgery. -
Lunch ideas
IncredibleShrinkingMan replied to brandeett's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Following the Protein first rule, here goes: Grilled chicken Greek Yogurt Soft veggies (you still don't want really crunchy stuff at this point) Low-fat cheese Low-fat dressing And if you have room...maybe a cracker or two to satisfy any carb craving you way have...like wheat thins. You probably won't get to it anyway. -
Surgery on August 18

If you are allowed to have fish salads and eggs, opt for those (they will provide more satiety). Save yogurt and other dairy for the end of your shift if that is the concern. -
Angry and depressed and STARVING!
LuckyStar replied to Violet S.'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@Violet S. hang in there. Maybe you are throwing up frequently because you are consuming foods your new pouch is just not ready for. chicken for one, can be very heavy on the new stomach. This is why we are encouraged to eat tender thigh meat and not the white breast meat we may have learned to love so much. I find I am also frequently hungry and am not sure why since I eat according to plan on scheduled times with Snacks in between (applesauce, yogurt). Im also not sure if the hunger means that the new pouch is stretching out, so caution when serving portions. Oh and yes, there are weight stalls, I believe this is perfectly normal for those who are eating regularly around the clock and not relying solely on liquids and Protein shakes as their only meals. Hang in there it gets easier as time passes, I too was miserable for a few weeks -- but since surgery Aug 3, I seem to be healing slowly and feeling better. Good luck with your weight loss and with this process in general. -

HELP Dumping!
Threetimesacharm replied to Sunshine3073's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
If you are only a month out it is waaay to early to be eating chicken, it is one of the hardest foods to digest. You should be having soft fish and beans for protein, cottage cheese, yogurt. -
I drive thru McDonald's almost every morning for a low fat yogurt parfait!

My doctor is having me eat pureed foods already 3 days post op. Is that normal?
Beachsprite replied to Kaitlin89's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was on yogurt and apple puree 1 day out 2 weeks out i'm still on purees but more blended meat with soup I'm also having some of that soft pretend crab meat stuff which is going in fine. Sadly after surgery I am now badly lactose intolerant so all my planned shakes and Greek yogurt are off the menu. -
Have you tried Isopure? They have some good favors, sip on it through the day, 40g protein in the bottle. Also unjury, they have un-flavored that you could mix into yogurt or creamed Soup. Good luck!

I take it that you are on soft food. If you can squish it you can probably eat it. You can also eat canned chicken or pork and ad mayonnaise to those.. Yogurt is also good As well as canned veggies. I also ate some baby food and toddler sausages. Although, they were pretty bland., just a thought.

@@OKCPirate - that looks yummy! I have heard quite a bit about the Genepro. Does it mix well? What's the taste like? I haven't tried any of the Greek yogurt yet, but planning to -
I'm now just a few days over 3 weeks post op gastric bypass and so far eating somewhat normally again, err, well for my "new normal." I thought these tips might be useful to others... Things that go down fine (and are pleasurable to eat) oatmeal (I buy the quick packets of organic oatmeal, no sugar added), lowfat 1% milk just cover them in a bowl and microwave a minute to a minute and 1/2. Add a handful of fresh strawberries and blueberries with a sprinkle of splenda a spash more milk. Yummy and fills you up with no issues (at least for me) Salads - I've really had no problems enjoying a small salad. No sugar added popsicles (about 25 to 35 calories each) - very soothing and tasty Black bean Soup and almost any cream Soups in the cartons (roasted red pepper etc.) Chili - in small quantities most canned soups like Progresso heart healthy laughing cow cheese - actually, I'm not a big fan but these are fine Light and Fit greek yogurt - 80 calories - these are good Stouffers mac and cheese cups - these are high in fat but only 240 calories or so since you're eating a small amount and a tasty treat once and a while Vitarain from costco - about $10 a case eggs so long as they're cooked soft Low Fat 1 or 2% cottage cheese Almonds - just a few once and a while Flank steak - flank steak is tender, slice it thin, saute with some peppers and just remember small amounts Popcorn air popped - just a small bowl with a tiny drizzle of butter and a little salt Artificial crab - fine in small amounts. Jello Things that hurt to avoid or eat very, very slowly Pasta/Noodles - even small quantities are pretty tough to keep down chicken, especially white meat - doesn't digest well Crackers - almost any kind - a few rice crackers maybe but all others don't feel good to me ground meat - a bit easier then chicken but still, very small amounts bread or bagels - don't feel good anything fried in oil The key is always listen to your body. Chew well, wait for it to go down, see how it feels, if it feels bad stop or slow way down. Hopefully this makes sense to some folks. I'm hoping things get easier but I'm adapting well to my "new normal."

Hi all, I've been pretty quiet on here so far. Just mostly "creeping" and educating myself. I was hoping for some honest advice. I have talked to my Dr. but still have reservations. I am a low carber and have been on and off for years. Right now its been about 5 months steady. We (hubby & I) do not eat bread, cereal, pasta, flour ,sugar etc, etc. I have even cut back on the high fat cheese. I weaned myself off my diet coke addiction months ago also. I am not losing the weight I have in the past with low carb. I already drink an EAS carb control protein shake for breakfast along with a quest bar everyday. In fact when I had my first Nut appt. I was pleasantly surprised by the things she had on the list that we already use. Greek yogurt, crystal light, protein shakes etc. I'm concerned that I already am not eating "bad stuff" and one would think I should be ahead of the game. However, if its not working now, what chance do I stand after the sleeve? Thank you for listening.

Not happy with it at all. I have 1 cc of fluid in my band and am having trouble eating yogurt and tons of different foods. Went to have fluid taken out and the doc tried to put more fluid in. I hate the band. I wish I would of gotten bypass but I was to chicken to do it.
