    What kind of birth control do you use?

    I used to have the Mirena IUD. I had it for the full 5 years. When it was time to have it removed, I was going to a different GYN and they said since I've never had children I should not have another one inserted. The risk of infertility was way too high. So they put me on the pill. I've been okay with the pill. I've not forgotten (i set my phone alarm) and actually no weight gain (even when I wasn't dieting). The generic name is Triphasil. The only thing I don't like is that I now have a period. With the IUD I didn't have one AT ALL! So of course I stared my period THE DAY BEFORE SURGERY! When it rains it pours!

    Been on Seasonale for years. The best part (besides not getting pregnant), only get a period every 3 months. A little spotting when I first took it and no weight gain.

Here's some info I found online about Protein powders: Protein powder: What Ingredients to Look For and associated Risks Some products use additive to enhance the flavor, mix-ability, texture, longevity, convenience to transport, or just to bulk the product up and make it cheaper to produce – think popular lines like Muscle Milk, Apex, and Vi. When reading labels, it’s valuable to know that ingredients are typically listed in the order of the highest amount used in the product to the least amount. Aspartame and Sucralose – Sucralose is sometimes sold as “Splenda”, both are sweeteners containing no calories and are sweeter than sugar. There may be a link between sucralose and leukemia in mice, so its safety rating has changed from “Safe” to “Avoid.” Regarding Aspartame in 2007 it was found that long-term exposure to low doses of aspartame increased cancer in rats. Maltodextrin – Maltodextrin is an artificial sugar that has a mild, sweet taste. It’s also known as a polysaccharide, or chain of sugars, and is created by applying acids or other enzymes to cornstarch. Maltodextrin is actually a term that applies to any starch hydrolysis product containing fewer than 20 glucose units. Therefore, maltodextrin refers to a family of products rather than one specific product. It has side effects and health risks similar to most food additives. These include allergic reactions, unexplained weight gain, bloating, and flatulence. Specific allergic reactions include rash, asthma, itching, and difficulty breathing. Wheat-derived maltodextrin may pose health concerns for individuals with celiac disease because it contains gluten. However, in most cases the maltodextrin production process completely removes the protein from the wheat resulting in a gluten-free wheat-derived maltodextrin. Soy Lecithin – This additive is extracted from soybeans, either mechanically or chemically, using hexane. It’s actually a byproduct of soybean oil production. It can cause side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, or fullness. Soy lecithin has been linked to negative effects on fertility and reproductionand there are links to a promotion in the risk of cancer. Xanthan Gum – Xanthan Gum is made by fermenting corn sugar with a bacteria. Xanthan Gum can be derived from a variety of sources such as corn, wheat, and soy. Individuals with an allergy to such sources should avoid foods containing Xanthan Gum. As a carbohydrate with 7 grams of Fiber per tablespoon, it may cause bloating in some people.

    When you're sick you do what you can to get liquids in, and so don't beat yourself up about that. Just put it behind you and get back on the path. Stressing over things releases cortisol and that can cause weight gain, so don't let stress get the better of you. You analyzed the problem, it was temporary, and you knew enough to come here and get encouragement to get back on track. Way to go!!! You did great!!!

    UGH - Thanksgiving Regrets

    Thanks Grady - Yeah - Sorry, I should have said that in the post reference it not being a "real" weight gain - HOWEVER, in the past i would have used that as an "excuse" and stayed on what can only be described as a food bender for multiple days and it would certainly become REAL fat. I think it's important that we're honest with ourselves and realize what got most of us to the point of body altering surgery. We talk about scales lying to us. They don't. They're an honest measurement of our body composition. Whether it be fat, water, or muscle it IS the truth and personally I NEED to be cognizant of what reactions my body has to my actions (positive or negative).
  7. Band _Groupie - Wow we are in the exact same boat. I had to have an unfill two months ago and I am now up 11 pounds from my lowest weight. I am also watching myself and doing my best this week (and next). If I have not started to lose again, I'll go in for a very small fill. I havent been on LBT in a long time. It's my weight gain that brought me back. Here's hoping you and I both start to see the scale moving down!

    June 30th Sleevers?

    That's not too bad for two weeks. I am a carb addict. I laughed when my doc asked me if a contributing factor to my weight gain was sweets. (This fat chick doesn't like cake! Haha) I am a bread and rice girl all the way. I'm thankful he's letting me enjoy them until the morning of the 29th. But oddly have no problem giving it up for good after. He said it's best that I try my best never to allow any carbs back into my diet after surgery other than occasional potatoes or cauliflower. He said he won't restrict me but highly advises against it even in my maintenance phase down the road. I am really ok with Protein and veggies for the rest of my life. Don't like fruit much so no loss there. But I do have a "texture" problem with yogurt, smoothies and pudding so I am a little worried about the pureed stage of post-op. That texture make me want to vomit. I'm praying I can get past the mental problem I have with it so I can make it through that phase ok. I am so jealous that you aren't nervous. I am holding it together ok right now but know I am gonna really lose it the day before surgery. Part of me is ready to get it over with so the anxiety can go away and the other wishes I would have given myself more time to prepare mentally. I'm not afraid of pain or giving up food. I'm afraid of surgery and anesthesia. If I could just make it through that day...I'll be ok.

    3 weeks out and weight gain

    I had RNY on 4/10/17 and I can't tell you what's going on, but I well understand your worry and frustration. I'm looking for a weight loss buddy -- someone to check in with and share with -- are you game? I'll leave it to others to advise you regarding the weight gain. My instincts want to tell you to not to worry. Everyone here seems to think they'll be "the exception," in terms of being able to lose the weight, but everyone seems to lose it. I wish I could be more helpful, but for all I know, I could be in your shoes in another week or so. Bunny

    December Bandsters 2009

    My husband and I went on a trip last week for our honeymoon/anniversary. I was already advanced to regular foods, and I don't have any restriction. They warned me that I could gain some weight during my regular food and without restriction. I gained 5 pounds back!! So....I'm really watching everything I put in my mouth, truly focusing on drinking enough water, and getting my 60 g protein in everyday. I've also started exercising. Last night I did 30 min on wii fit, today I plan to hit the treadmill. I don't get a fill until 2/4. Has anyone else had problems with weight gain???
  12. I definitely never ever let anyone make up my plate. That just wont work long term for you. The reason i say that, as time goes by you will be able to eat more food and because it is there, likely you will. In the beginning I measured everything until i got used to what a real portion for me looks like. Now i can eyeball what food i can eat and am pretty good about not overeating. Even when i order in a restaurant i have learned to ask for a to go box and remove most of the food off of my plate right away. I do this because, i dont want to over eat and for some reason my husband is on a seefood diet. if he sees more food he will eat it. LOL and my weight loss has become his weight gain! So we have gotten good at sharing or stashing the extras away. Just tell Mom you would like to fill your own plate and choose only items you can and should eat. Protein and veggies.... I promise, you will get the hang of this.

    What I Ate Today!

    Ok... Here goes B- 1/2 scrambled egg 1 slice of bacon L- 1/2 piece of Tilapia highlander brand) D- 4 naked chicken wings FRIED!!!! Snack- Energy Vitamin Water Do not follow my example here bc I paid dearly for poor choices w a 1.5lb weight gain , very sad about this... Feeling like I can't get control sometimes
  14. I'm confused by some of the items here. Before you read on ... understand that I'm asking this because I want to believe so badly that you're RIGHT. I'm not being argumentative. I just am hesitant. Set me straight if I'm wrong here. Hummus? Isn't that really high in fat? The label I see (online) says 24g of fat. Do they even make low-fat hummus? Beef Jerky? Isn't that crazy high in sodium? That equates to retaining liquid, meaning weight gain. And sodium means high blood pressure too. The sugar free pudding I have here says zero grams Protein. I'm sure the Jello is no better. What brand are you using? I found only one or two varieties of Boar's Head products that are low sodium. Traditionally, lunchmeat is loaded with sodium. Peanut butter (the normal kind) is pretty high in fat too (16g for Jif, one serving is 25% of your daily intake!) Ok hold your fire for a moment. Maybe I should explain myself better. My nutritionist said to worry about protein, sodium, and fat content, before worrying about calories. If you can find something high protein, low sodium, and low fat (and low sugars), then the calories are less of a concern. Yes, I'm focused on sodium a lot. What good is losing weight if I still have high blood pressure? Yes, I'm focused on fat somewhat too. Sure, some fat is necessary, but if one serving of something has 30% of my daily recommended intake of fat (for a normal stomach person!), then it can't be good for me. Ok, flame on. Be gentle. Staisea ... I love your term "with a blip of cheese". That's fantastic. Like "bagel with schmear".

    December Bandsters 2009

    In need of thoughts and prayers. My first knee replacement surgery is Tue. of next week. They took all the fluid out of my band about an hour ago :smile: I had lost another 5 lbs. in one week. Total of about 60 lbs. She said to expect weight gain right after surgery because of all the fluids they give you. She said I could gain up to 5 lbs. but will lose it quickly after I'm off the IV. Anyway, my band is empty! Oh No!!! I haven't been hungry at allllllllll. I wonder if this will turn my hungry switch back on. We shall see. I can get the fluid put back in two weeks. Wish me well and think of me!!! I am looking forward to improvement in my mobility. Love, Dottie

    Argon's Activities

    My firend took Zyban and did wonderful.She was able to quit. Her only problem was the routine she had. Aftet every meal she smoked, breaks at work, before bed. Her solution, red hot tamalies from the states. ( A red hot chewie candy ) She would eat five of these vile candy every time she wanted a smoke. (That is about 20 of those awful candy a day ! yuck )After about a month she no longer needed the candy to distract her. And no weight gain, she is one of those who can eat whatever and still wears a 7 pants! Y
  17. Same here! I've been pushing myself at the gym a little harder as of late. I was surprised to see the scale move up a few pounds. I tested my body fat and measured my waist size and they both dropped very nicely. You can increase your muscle, which will increase your weight slightly. This type of weight gain is healthy and awesome
  18. I had lost 12 or 13 lbs, I believe, before surgery. And of course post-surgery, it's very frustrating to get on the scale and note that you have gained weight (or at least I did) from the gas and the fluids I received IV during hospitalization. It took me at least five days to get rid of that and I am not 'counting' the weight gain...it was a pause in progress, really. Since surgery, though, I've lost 8 more lbs, and I'm feeling pretty darned cheery about that! Best, Deb WS

    Why are YOU Fat?

    Sweet, my weight goals are the same as yours. Do you know when you are being banded? I think I AM ready. I just get really freaked out when hearing words like "slippage", "PBs", "vomitting", "growling", "erosion" and most importantly "weight gain" if the band is removed. My intention is to rejoin weight watchers with my mom (who is on maintenance) to correct my lapsed eating judgment. I was very disciplined while on WW, but lost the initiative when the weight stopped dropping. I think with the tool (the band) and the support of WW I will be okay. I am concerned though about how I will be viewed (in WW) and/or treated if it becomes known that I have been banded. WW is all about natural weight loss, but I think some of us really do need a little help. It has been emphasized that the band is not supposed to be looked at as something that will be put in just long enough to reach a weight goal and then removed, but I have to admit that if how I am currently looking at it. I am uneasy with having a foreign body inside of me, which is why I am trying to become involved in other intervention methods and behavioral management programs. I have so many thoughts flying through my mind...I just want to get it over with and it has barely even started lol

    6 months post plication

    I really like what you've said and agree that I would rather feel like I can have an ocassional treat here and there, even if that means losing the weight slower. Although I am very frustrated with my recent almost complete shut down on losing weight, I did just get back from a 2 week road trip where I was out of control in what I was eating pretty much the whole time. I was prepared for a 5-10 lb weight gain when I returned, but surprisingly I only gained ONE pound!! If I had actually eaten more healthily during this trip I might have LOST weight! As it is, though, I am very pleased that the restriction I still have has kept me from binging and eating too much in one sitting, which makes a big difference for me.
  21. So, I am completely new to blogging but thought I'd give it a try. I'm hoping that by putting my thoughts, fears, and hopes down, it will help me through my journey of weight loss. If in the process, it happens to help any of you who stumble across my writings, then that's even better!! First of all, although I have not always been obese, I have always been "chubby" and/or have struggled with my weight and had an issue with food. I am an emotional eater. I eat if bored, angry, depressed, happy. . . you name it, and I'll eat for it!! I come from a very Italian family who solved everything with food. I recently came across a diary I kept when I was in high school. Most of the entries were about me complaining about how fat I was and if I could only lose a few more pounds I'd be able to fit into a bikini!! I couldn't believe how fat I thought I was when looking back I know for a fact that I was 120lbs at my heaviest in high school!!! Most of my weight gain came about after a miscarriage, losing a baby when I was 23 weeks pregnant, then from my first and second successful pregnancies. I ballooned eventually up to 252 lbs and this was way too much weight on my 5'3 frame. My back hurt, my knees hurt, I had high blood pressure, pre-diabetes. The list goes on. I tried many different weight loss programs, diet pills, gym memberships, etc. Nothing worked. I finally got up the courage to go for Lap Band. This is my physical, mental and emotional journey. First off, I was banded on 3/1/13. Liquids one week, pureed one week, soft solids one week then. . . regular food. Lost about 18 pounds. No problems to speak of until I went for my first fill on 4/9 when my doc found a kink. . . literally. He could fill but not aspirate! Apparently, my tubing had kinked he believes due to intra-abdominal pressure within the first few hours or days of banding! So, he only filled about 1.5 ccs. Went 4/11 for an x-ray, and lo and behold. . . staring right at me is a very sharp kink that of course, my doctor and the GI fellow both could not manipulate manually to unkink! Fast forward several weeks, and here I am again fresh out of surgery on 5/3 where I had to have the port replaced. Luckily, it wasn't as invasive as the first surgery, so I am not experiencing any of that wonderful chest, back, shoulder pain, etc., Basically, just pain at the incision site. This poor site has already been used 3 times! Originally to remove my gallbladder, then for band surgery #1 and now #2! Any more incisions in that area, and I think the scar will stand up and slap me!!! Now I'm on liquids until Tuesday when I see my doc again. He filled my band to 3ccs. Total weight loss so far is about 24 lbs. I'm hoping all will be well this time. We will see!!! I'll update again after I see my doc on 5/7. Wish me luck!!

    Jude, okay okay do I have to be the person now with common sense?? lol after all we cancers look after people. Doesn't mean you haven't lost inches or fat when the scale doesn;t move or sometimes moves up RIGHT??? Also next week you will see that loss and then some. I have all the confidence in the world. so so far now day three....... and i am okay all of a sudden with cottage cheese. i forgot who told me it was close to the perfect protein so I decided I should. I saw my doc today who has no idea why just two weeks would shrink my liver, says he never heard that before and this guy is no slouch. asl yoda why does an ovarian thing cause weight gain?? Iam a frigging nurse and have no clue. OH, WHAT IS WITH THE WEEKLY CANADIAN WEIGH IN? iS THAT HERE? oops sorry caps>

    Brigham and Women/Faulker Hospital

    Just walked in from what I "think" is my last pre-surgical meeting....but with the way things have gone for me since Thanksgiving with Dr. R, I never know.....I'm scheduled for the anesthesiologist next week and surgery on the 27th. I'm hoping this time things go as I've planned. I noticed the posting about last night's meeting after it happened. I'll go when you guys go!! I miss seeing all of you and I want control over my eating and my life back. After living for 3 years with my band, the past 5 months have been absolute hell. I now understand why the people who need to be unbanded are bitter. I recognize that the underlying reasons for my obesity are still there, though latent for a few years. Hidden well by my working out incessantly and eating very little, but nonetheless, still all there! Jay, you'll appreciate that I've been on the pre-op diet for 4 weeks now. Dr. R kept sending me home to lose weight.....thought I was gonna die. Seriously, I wouldn't have this band if not for needing it. I assure you, if I could lose weight without it, I would. I didn't think surgery was just something fun to try! Even WITH my weight gain, I've still maintained 55% of my excess body weight lost.....so I wasn't very nice the last few times he gave me a hard time. This time I even accidently swore when defending myself. With as far as I've come in the past few years, I'll be damned if some man with a few degrees more than me is gonna make me think I'm a complete effing failure. So....I miss you guys. Need my old life back and need to drop a few so I can go wedding dress shopping. My life has been on hold for 5 months and I want it back.....

    Failure!

    Do you take any medicines that cause weight gain. I was taking a couple that made me bloated, etc. If you do take meds check them, some may cause you to gain weight, and then take to your Dr.
  25. I have lost 25 pounds since surgery November 19th. That includes the weight gain from the IV. I have not been 216 pounds or in size 16 pants in ten years! I am not complaining but it does cross my mind that the loss should be faster. I examine myself all the time to see what I can do better or differently. I work out 4-5 days a week for a hour or two . I am trying new things at the gym all the time. I do not feel well if I eat below 800-900 calories, so I stick with that most days.
