    booze question

I have a question about alcohol

I totally LOVE my alcoholic beverages! (ohhhh so precise ) No really, I continue to enjoy my rum and diet cokes every Friday and Saturday. Now with the holidays in full swing I even had 1/2 glass of eggnog with rum. . . ugh that filled me up so quickly I didn't even enjoy that. . . I'll stick to the good stuff!!!! Cheers all and a very Merry Christmas to all and the best of the New Year!

    loosing too much weight??

cheese sticks/string cheese are a great quick snack. Be careful of adding a lot of sodium to your diet - it's not great for you. Make sure you're doing it under a doctor's supervision. Other things to consider are maintaining your volume intake, avoiding alcohol, and pumping your feet/ankles before getting up suddenly.

I have a question about alcohol

I think I know that answer to this question, here goes... Come New Years Eve I'll be 5 weeks post-op. I'm doing really well, but man I want just a little alcohol to ring in the New Year. Is this too early? Do I risk a leak by doing so? I was just thinking a little red wine. Nothing with bubbles, of course. Any thoughts/opinions?

I have a question about alcohol

Hot liquids and alcohol relax my sleeve. It worked with the band too, and I know some RNY'ers that use the same trick. Cold liquids definitely restrict my volume. I drink most everything at home at room temperature, and if I'm out I typically get easy or no ice.

    I'm here to help...

Hello all, I thank you all for your kind and warm welcome. I am feeling better since i got on the WW plan and have started dropping a little of the weight before my surgery. Dont seem as depressed today. My doctor's office called today to say they have all of my information together and are ready to meet with me one on one to set up the surgery and talk to the surgeon. YAY! Im so excited. The appt is set for Jan 3rd!!! Jewel, thank you for your sharing your experience with me about being on meds ect. I have been on meds for my bipolar since i was 18 years old and am also a recovering alcoholic and drug addict. I have quite a bit of a "story" and im sure you guys will hear bits and peices over time as i share it. But this is the last thing i have to "quit". I have stopped smoking after 20 years of chain smoking, i have stopped drugs, and i have stopped alcohol. The last hurdle i have to jump is my food addiction. Which is actually just plain ole addiction for me. I have substituted food for drugs and alcohol and cigarettes. So, now its time for me to conquer my addiction to food. Some people are telling me the lap band is the "easy way" but i havent heard that. I have heard it is still quite a job to lose the weight. I am ready for this change and am ready to do whatever it takes to conquer this. I had a rude awakening when my sister in an email said that she thought my 65 father would outlive me...it kinda hit me hard. Anyway, i just wanted to share the good news about my appt date that is set for Jan 3rd, like i said, Laters Tina

    Drinking Alcohol

I'm right there with BeachBabe! Sometimes I think I would rather have some wine than food. I know that's not good but old habits are hard to break sometimes. As for margaritas I found a low cal recipe called the Skinny Girl Margarita. It is good but very strong so you will be a cheap drunk if you're not careful. I have also discovered that once your banded alcohol can effect you differently each time you drink. Well at least that is the case for me! Crystal Light and vodka is a low cal option too.
  8. Thanks guys. I ended up ordering a Rum Runner. It was huge and it really tasted mostly of rum. I have an 8 month old so I haven't had any alcohol in oh 18 months or so. Needless to say that one was enough. I was great until I stood up from the table then things started to move a little. LOL We had a great night though.

    Caffeine anyone???

I have a large latte every morning. I pretend it's in the name of protein! I didn't for the first month or so though. To the alcohol question, I drink that too. All things in moderation, but some wine or a margarita every now and again never killed anyone!

    Drinking Alcohol

Be very careful about alcohol. This is coming from someone who loves a nice cold drink frequently. One good thing I have done since being banded is that I have not had any carbonation at all...not a drop. My drink of choice before LB was rum & diet Coke. Since LB I love vodka with diet Snapple iced tea. When I drink I find that my weight loss virtually stops and my inhibitions are lowered and I start to snack on nuts and other Snacks I shouldn't have. Not losing weight after surgery is devastating for me so I had to make a decision to stop drinking on the weekend. Since I stopped that my weight loss has started to pick up again. I know that when I go on vacation or have a special occasion I will probably have a drink again but just drinking casually on too many occasions is not worth it . If you just have to have it maybe we need to seek other help. Think about all the reasons you got banded to start with and all you had to do to get banded.

    Caffeine anyone???

Hmm...I had never heard no alcohol before. I know they don't want you to drink a lot - as it is empty calories, but I have never heard it is a big no no. I don't drink but maybe once or twice a year...as far as alcohol goes. I am too cheap! As far as caffeine I know post op they discourage it as the carbonation can cause your band to slip - not to mention it will make you gassy. (literally bubbles in your throat - it is wierd!) But after about three months I tried some caffeine free diet pop (I am addicted to the flavor, not the caffeine) and I am OK with it....I can't drink pop with meals or anytime near when I am eating....but I enjoy having a pop in the morning and one at night....that's my splurge! You will find, by reading posts etc, that everyone is different in their lapband journey! Some folks can drink pop again without problem and others say they can't at all....some can eat eggs, other can't ever again.....you will just have to find what works for you! Good luck! Kim

    Carbonated drinks

My dr says no carbonation or alcohol for 6 months, and then only in moderation, very very moderated.

    Carbonated drinks

i'm a diet pepsi addict. my surgeon told me no carbonation for 90 days after surgery... along with no alcohol. i did stick with it for the 3 months but i'm back to drinking it now. i'm 2.5 years post op and haven't had any problems other than when my band is empty and i take a sip of soda you can hear a gurgling sound as the liquid passes thru the band. it almost sounds like my stomach is growling but its just the Fluid passing thru the band. it only does it with carbonation though.

    Caffeine anyone???

The only things I was told to not have were alcoholic beverages and smoking! Definite no no's but people on here still do it so I guess you can live with that with the band. I WILL NEVER give up my coffee for anything or anybody. I love my coffee every morning and especially when we go out to eat, it helps to relax my band so that I can eat. I live for my coffee, especially in the colder temperatures of winter, even though it does not get too cold in Arizona during the winter, it is really very soothing to me and my band. As far as dehydration, I drink so much Water during the day that it really does not matter about the coffee eliminating some of it. Coffee satisfys me when I am hungry and it really helps to relax me before my meals, I try not to have it at night at home, but it is a life saver when we go out to eat. I think it depends on the individual, if it works for you, do it, my Dr. never said it was a problem. Now gum chewing makes people very hungry, did your Dr. tell you to not do anything to trigger your appetite like that? There are so many good ideas that come up on this website and I read on here every day, you will find out that what works for you, might not work for somebody else, this is an individual journey and only you can decide what works best for you. Good luck and listen to your body and your mind and you will do just fine.

    Drinking Alcohol

My book says alcohol causes gastric irritation and can cause liver damage. During periods of rapid weight loss the liver becomes especially vulnerable to toxins such as alcohol. Also says they recommend complete abstinence from alcohol for six months after surgery and avoid frequent consumption thereafter.

    Drinking Alcohol

My nutritionist kind of scared me on the whole alcohol thing; she pretty much told us expect it hit you harder faster and because I have such a low tolerance already that would be a REALLY bad thing for me. That being said, I know I won't give it up forever but I will definately make sure to have only 1 glass at a time (if even that)... But to answer your question, yeah, I think I'd probably wait a few months just to make sure everything's had a chance to heal.

    Drinking Alcohol

When I was banded the first time I waited a few weeks and then slowly drank just little amounts of alcohol like wine. I would drink it and Water at the same time ( not mixing) The second band around I drank a glass of wine a week after being banded and couldnt even drink half a glass it hit me hard. I think its better to wait a while ( guess I should take my own advice:P ) But of course ask your doctor first. My doctor says small amounts of alcohol is ok.
  19. When it comes to alcohol it depends on what mood my band is, to what I can drink. See my doc has never said drinking was bad so I drink on occasion when going out etc. Since being banded I have become a big wine person. Maybe you can try to find a sweeter wine. I prefer a sweeter white wine which is nice with meals. If you cant find one or dont want to try, here are a few suggestions. White russian Baileys and milk Vodka and orange juice Vodka and cranberry juice grapefruit juice and vodka Pina Colada Bloody Mary martinis Whiskey sour Amaretto Sour Happy Anniversary
  20. I can tell you that my favorite alcohol beverage is... beer ? Although, I get very mixed responses when asking people, Dr's, etc... about carbonation. My nutritionist said it was okay in moderation, and that the carbonation shouldn't really be a problem after 6 months. Some people say you can never sip a diet coke or beer ever again. If getting healthy means I have to sacrifice beer for the rest of my life, so be it, but I wouldn't mind the occasional microbrew every now and again...
  21. Hummm, which ones don't I like would be a shorter list. I'm a cosmopolitian kind of girl. I like mine with Absolute Citron, Triple Sec & Pomegranate juice with a HUGE twist of lemon. I keep my alcohol to a limit because of the empty calories but sometimes a little cosmo is just hits the spot. They have a ton of calories as most alcoholic beverages do but they are pretty, small & tasty. Happy anniversary. Hope your hubby likes the the gift of the new you.

    Hurts to eat

Been banded 2 1/2 yes. Lately when I eat it hurts when food goes down Caffeine or alcohol burns really bad. I almost never drink alcohol but with Christmas parties have had a few glasses of champagne It burns so bad going down I wonder if I am too tight or is something else like an ulcer on my esophagus. I do not have heartburn. Only burns as food or liquid is going down. Thx

    Goin' on a cruise

I went on a cruise preband but I had already changed my eating habits and was exercising daily. When I got back one of my friends said I was the only person he knew that lost weight on a cruise. My mother and I got up early and went lap swimming in the pool whenever possible. Later in the day it is to crowded. Also, we got a lot of exercise when we left the ship everyday. Also cruise ships are REALLY big. You can get a lot of execise just walking from your room to the restaurant or the shows. Many ships also have gyms. One thing I will say is to avoid the alcohol. I know easy for me to say; because I really don't drink. 1) They are really expensive and you don't really notice until you get the bill at the very end; 2) mixed drinks have lots of calories.
  24. Happy Anniversary to you!!!!! I was told not to have any carbonated beverages and to stay away from them. Also for the alcohol at least 6 months but since this is a wonderful occasion I'd recommend the vodka and cranberry juice or any of your personal favorites to go with the vodka. I'm not sure if you're into fruitty but you may want to try Malibu (which is a caribbean rum) with orange juice and a splash of pineapple juice. That's good and very light.... Hope those help, and enjoy your fabulous evening with the hubby.....cheers
  25. Dh and I are going out tomorrow night for our wedding anniversary. I rarely ever drink, in fact it's been over a year now since I've had anything but I'd like to have something tomorrow night. I don't like beer or wine. My favorite thing to drink was always rum or vodka mixed with diet coke. Any recs for a good drink I could try?
