1 week to lose half of a pound suggestions?
Bufflehead replied to newmebithebypass's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Focus on lean meat (no bacon, sausage, deli meat, or jerky) and green veggies for lunch and dinner, Greek yogurt for breakfast, and fruit for snacks. Be careful how you prepare things -- stay away from butter, cheese, sauce, etc. Stay away from grains, sweets, and starchy veggies such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, and peas. No, this isn't a lot of fun but you can do this without being terribly hungry for a week and you will lose the weight and likely more than half a pound. It is just for a week and you need to be strict with yourself for a little bit to keep on track towards the surgery you want. Weigh yourself every day to make sure you are staying on track. Oh and cut out liquid calories completely. Also, this will help you get ready for post-surgery life. Good luck! -
Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and tuna. No sugar added diced peaches and applesauce.
-
Yes, those are all soft foods. Take small bites and chew to mush. For purées I did stuff like cottage cheese, greek yogurt, refried Beans, tuna, ricotta with marinara, scrambled eggs.
-
I really loved ricotta with seasoning, egg with mayo, broiled tilapia, canned chicken with mayo. 1 scrambled egg with Italian herb seasoning and 1tsp of ricotta. I miss my soups but this is better protein. I could only get about four spoons in. Recently I've gone up to 5. I am not a fan of yogurt or Greek yogurt, but I tried.

Does anyone ever imagine their tiny tummy as an evil dictator who is trying to take over your body? Maybe I'm the only one?!? Sometime I imagine trying to reason with him... Me:This red, ripe tomato is tasting so good, don't you agree tiny tummy? Evil tiny tummy: yes it is... Wait, I changed my mind. No it isn't, now let's see how fast you can run to the bathroom. Me: I don't get it, we've eaten tomatoes in things, why don't you like them by themselves? Evil tiny tummy: hahaha (evil laugh) because I decided we didn't today! Me: tiny tummy, how come I can eat 5 ounces of Greek yogurt, 3 ounces of chicken, but only 1 tablespoon of tuna? Evil tiny tummy: because, I do what I want! Hahaha (more evil laugh). Anyone else have funny tiny tummy struggles to share?

@@auntitraci I have heard of people using the Flintstones Vitamins also. The first month, we won't be able to eat the solid Protein so shakes or unflavored protein that can be mixed in SF pudding , yogurts , Soups etc.so that you can meet your protein needs to avoid muscle loss and to covert the fat to energy so that you lose weight quicker. How old is your German Shepherd? I love animals. I have 3 dogs of my own. I think I would go nuts staying at home. I work part time just on the weekends and occasionally work from home also. My husband has been extremely supportive over the past 11 years. He has been through every crash diet, and supported me when I went through the band. He has even ate similar foods to what I was eating at the time to make it easier for me. He is also supportive of my decision for bypass, even though I know he loves me just the way I am, but he wants me to be happy and healthy. We actually had a conversation the other day. He said that when I get done with my bypass and later my tummy tuck, that he wants a Harley. Lol. I had said "ok no problem". Then he said, "not a matchbox kind, and it must be life size, has an engine, with wheels, and it must be in working order". LOL! He was specific, because he knows my sick sense of humor. He asked for a Harley years ago and I got him a matchbox size and put under the Christmas tree...hehehe! That's awesome that your husband is supportive. It makes it so much easier! -

My nutritionist wanted me to aim for 100g a day right away, but I didn't realistically get there probably until I was on solid foods. It's pretty easy to get 100 grams if you do a couple bars or shakes a day and make sure you are doing protein first with every snack or meal. I would say, once I was on solids, my day looked something like this: Breakfast: Bar or shake (~20 grams) Morning Snack: String cheese (8 grams) Lunch: about 3 oz. of meat, usually leftover from a previous dinner (16-20 grams) Afternoon Snack: Greek Yogurt (12 grams) Dinner: about 3 oz. of meat (16-20 grams) Evening Snack: Bar or Shake (~20 grams) Now I can usually get closer to 4-5 ounces of meat in at once and I can get some carbs in, like I put kashi Cereal or granola into my yogurt. I also haven't been doing the string cheese in the morning lately and just get another Protein Bar in somewhere during the day. -
Protein Shakes Make Me Gag
marypups replied to kelseysleevedup's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hate Protein shakes, too. Early on I decided I would try to eat four Greek yogurts a day (15 grams each) if I have to in order to avoid Protein Shakes. I no longer have to do it because I am 8 weeks out, but I did do it some days. But you could eat Greek yogurt and cottage cheese and do pretty well. -
protein intake and weight loss connection ! please advise

i don't follow with any NUT i did the surgery in belgium and when i got back here to the UK they won't help me cause i didn't do the surgery here ! :/ it sucks but i really don't know what to do ! not losing weight is killing me If you are a month post op you can probably get most, if not all of your protein from food. You don't have to have protein supplements. Salad doesn't have protein and is probably too hard to digest this early out (if by salad you mean lettuce and other raw, leafy vegetables). Can you eat Greek yogurt, tuna, turkey, cottage, cheese, etc? All of these foods are good sources of protein. You have to get enough protein to both heal and lose weight. What does your NUT advise? -
I would also add to James's comments to begin to ween sugars and bad carbohydrates out of your system. Eat meals high in Protein and good vegetables. If you are not already doing this you must eat 3 meals per day. Skipping a meal only sets your metabolism wrong and messes with your system. A day might look like this: Breakfast :Scrambled eggs for breakfast with turkey bacon or 1percent cottage cheese with sliced strawberries on it or SF Greek Yogurt. lunch - salad with chicken breast and low calorie dressing - balsamic & olive oil is a good choice. Put a grilled chicken breast and hard boiled egg on it. The protein will help ensure it stays with you longer. You could even add some cheese. dinner - some type of lean protein such as baked chicken breast, turkey, pork tenderloin, fish, beef. Make a double portion of veggies and a salad with low cal dressing. If you snack have an apple with Peanut Butter or a handful of nuts or even an ounce of cheese. Stay away from: bread, Pasta, rice, white potatoes, sweets and processed foods. If you begin to do this now, it will prepare you for post surgery and you will absolutely lose weight in the process. You could also pick up some high quality Protein shakes such as Premier Protein found at costco or Sam's. You can have one as a meal or as a snack. It is high in protein, very low in sugar and tastes great. And also as James said, go for a walk everyday. 30 minutes with ensure your body gets moving in the right direction. If you cannot go 30 minutes start with 15 and work up to it. Good luck to you!

@@Dawny28 As you said, everyone is different. You will definitely lose some weight by week 8. I was down about 23 pounds at two months out? Some people are down 40-50 by then. As for eating, I was allowed solid foods at 40 days post-op, but nothing crunchy until 3 months post-op. Again, every plan is different, so yo should definitely stick to your surgeon's/nutritionist's plan for you. I'm a full year out and I still can't eat raw vegetable without getting super burpy and uncomfortable. But I don't know of too many people on here who have that problem. So no salads for me ever again I don't think. Fruit I was able to do pretty early on, but nothing with the skins on until I was further out. For your time at Disney World, look for string cheese, those cups with cubed cheese and/or pepperoni, beef/turkey sticks, and yogurt. I haven't been to Disney post-op, but I have been to a couple of other amusement parks and they usually have those sorts of things available at their snack stands.

Calories and protein
Bufflehead replied to Smallbites2015's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think it sounds like you are doing well with your protein intake. Don't push yourself to eat too much too soon. Does "back off protein shakes" mean that you can no longer have them at all, or just that you have to dial it back from maybe 2 shakes per day to 1 shake per day? If you can have one shake per day, could your daily eating look something like this? Protein shake -- 25 grams protein Greek yogurt -- 15 grams protein Ostrim stick - 14 grams protein 1/2 c. cottage cheese - 14 grams protein string cheese - 7 grams protein That would put you right about at your target, at least under most plans. And, I hate to break it to you but you can't prevent hair loss. It either will happen, or it won't. It's caused by telogen effluvium, correlated with the shock of surgery. I hit my protein goal every single day (75 grams) starting the day after surgery and I still had significant hair loss. Other people were not nearly as religious about protein and didn't have any hair loss. It's really luck of the draw IMO. If your dietician is absolutely adamant that you must stop all protein shakes immediately, I would get back in touch with her and lay it out very plainly for her. Tell her that there is no way you are going to meet your protein goals without having at least one shake per day. Given that reality, your options are either to have that shake and meet your protein goals, or skip the shake and not meet your protein goals. Since those are your options for the immediate future, which option does she recommend? Yes, you will still lose without exercising. Quadriplegics can lose weight doing nothing but lying in bed or sitting in a chair so long as they eat right. In fact, there are studies showing that exercise causes people to gain weight, not lose weight. Exercise is great for your health but the impact on weight loss is minimal from what I can see. -
I'm seven weeks postop how in the world do you manage to get all your Protein and calories in when I can barely manage to eat maybe 1-2 ounces at a time ? Greek yogurt I can eat 3.5 oz with a break in between. Nut said back off Protein shakes which I may have one or two per day. meat still an issue but worried about carbs in Beans. I eat string cheese, can tolerate Ostrim meat sticks only, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, 1/2 oz deli meat - low sodium turkey breast, laughing cow wedges. I'm too full to think about veggies or fruit. Getting Vitamins in most days, was doing good on Water but my job just went nuts and I'm all over the place. Now getting a cold so feel really crappy. Stopped exercising due to low calorie intake...will I still lose? Don't want my hair to fall out either. I've shunned the scale for now but clothes are really loose already down a size. Help! ???? I've been so busy lately it is a blur

A year later and still having a hard time. Need your opinion
2Big2Skate replied to sweetlia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
All the problems you list COULD be related to the acid, which isnt that abnormal. It would be a good precautionary step to get some imaging done just in case. But if your surgeon is confident, then it's your call whether you want a second opinion. Acid can swell up the esophogus and slow down the movement of food. Does it get better when you take the acid blockers? Does it feel like food is stacking up before the stomach (intense, focused discomfort)? Are you chewing things up really well and eating slowly? If you get imaging that shows youre structurally fine, then I'd work with the choice of foods. Work with your nutritionist to find foods that don't trigger the acid. For me, I couldnt touch yogurt for 3 months. But now I'm off the pills and love yogurt. -
I was told to cut out caffeine during the pre-op diet and up to six weeks after but don't know why. I did not drink it until I started the puréed stage and now I have it maybe 2-3 times per week. For me, I don't do artificial sweeteners so the sugar/creamer is bad too. But I noticed that a tall caramel macchiato with skim milk has the same calories & sugar as a Greek yogurt I was encouraged to eat plus 10 grams of protein. I don't usually eat breakfast - coffee was always it for me.

I'm on my 3rd week. I had the gastric bypass. I was so sick of eating broth, & now get to eat yogurt, cream soups, cream of wheat etc I'm trying to still stay at the 200ML that the hospital was giving me. So far it's ok, some days I'm super hungry & other days I won't really eat all day. It's tough to not over eat. I notice I get really hungry when I'm cooking for my family. The smell of food I can't have really gets me. I notice if I eat my soups & drink my protien shake on time throughout the day, it's easier to smell food without wanting to give in. Now I just need to work on excersize, getting up & motivating myself. Good luck everyone

6 days on -eating about 10 teaspoons of puree twice a day plus porridge for breakfast and yogurts for snacks - as well as 1.5L water - mainly with a bit of cordial. All going well. Minimal pain. Plenty of energy. -
(Greek) yogurt and scant amounts of cheese are the only things on that list that I eat. Frankly I would be more strict and add in protein bars and potatoes in any form -- not just chips.

Protein drinks

I make a frappuccino every morning with one scoop vanilla Protein powder, 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, ice, a squirt of folgers drops and a splash of sf Torani white chocolate syrup. Total calories= 175/ 25g protein I like the Jay Robb brand, I get it at the Vitamin shoppe. I like their vanilla and their strawberry, haven't tried the chocolate. SF torani syrups are great, I get those at Costplus World Market. You can also add greek yogurts to the shakes. Look on you tube for the video that shows how to eliminate the foam in the blender. It comes from air when the blender isn't full. -

Most of those foods are on my nutritionists list as okay. That being said it is: 2% cheese Peanut Butter is okay in moderation since it is high fat and I watch brands for sugar content coffee Add-ins such as creamer is higher in sugar and some people drink a little coffee with their creamer Greek yogurt in and of itself is high sugar but the Greek 100's are excellent pretzels and chips are a slider food, they don't fill you up and are empty carbs Baked goods, sweets and pudding are high sugar and fat. SF pudding would be a better choice if you gotta. My nutritionist and surgeon say for me to get 60-70g of Protein and no less than 900 calories at this point. I am to eat 3 meals and 2 Snacks. I don't have to count the rest as long as I get protein first, non-starchy veggies second and starches last if there is room. I do a Protein shake for breakfast on the go, lunch is 3 ounces meat and 1 ounce veggies, snack is a Protein Bar, dinner is 3-4 ounces meat and 1 ounce veggies, evening snack is 1.5 ounces fruit. Other than my protein shake in the morning I only drink Water. It is all about the choices we make. Good luck! -
