  1. I found out today that my family care doctor didn't keep record of our discussions about weight loss diet and exercise... On the bright side the man who needs the information to submit to my insurance said she can go back and document what we discussed on a form... Which is great... However... My family doctor has up and quit... No one knows where she is going or if she is even going to work anywhere else... So that means I may have to do 5 more months... I am sooo discouraged!
  2. I heard the same thing from two of my friends (both over weight). One of them said her moms friend had it about a month ago and had to go back in the hospital due to complications (but shes 20 years older than me and smoked for like 30 years). And my coworker says her aunt is a bariatric nurse and told her about all the complications. I just changed the subject bc I don't need to hear that crap 2 weeks pre-op...I'm scared enough. Plus ive done my research. But I'll be interested to hear what they have to say 6 months from now. I won't be surprised if they are asking for my Dr's name and number!
  3. Play the game. Pre-weigh yourself - sneak in the day before and get on the scale, and if you start to lose a little too much, line your pockets with rolls of quarters and put 2lb ankle weights on under your thick jeans, weigh with your shoes on - claim you are too tired to take them off. Get creative, you can do this.
  4. So I had my third fill 06/02. I had been frustrated because the weight loss had been so slow. Then on Saturday I get on the scale and I am down ten pounds!!!! Finally some progress. Well today I hopped on the scale because we will be out of town tomorrow and guess what? I am up ten pounds. What the heck is that all about? I haven't changed any thing. Has this happened to any one else? I haven't had a BM since Sunday, but I can't image that there is 10 lbs of pooh in me. Any one have any ideas?
  5. I was sleeves on August 12th and lost 22 lbs the first two weeks!! Fabulous. But then as soon as I started my mushy food I stalled and haven't lost a pound. Actually scale says I gained! It's been a week and I am so frustrated. I have been charting all my food and Water staying under 800 calories close to 70 Proteins and 48-64 oz of water a day but nothing is happening. Any tips to get this stall broken or motivational stories of similar happenings would be greatly appreciated. I feel like I will be the only sleeve unsuccessful story!!
  6. So I decided weeks ago that 5/1 would be my quit date from tobacco! I completely forgot that one side effect of quitting tobacco is weight gain. So far today, I have been craving food!!! I’m only 2 weeks post op the Orbera. Do you think I’m setting myself up for failure? Maybe I should postpone my quit date do I do not have cravings...any thoughts, comments, or questions are appreciated! FYI...I use snuff.

    Stalled for almost a week

Thx for the encouragement. Yeah, I know I can't be gaining weight, lol. Heck I am still Struggling to get anything in. I think that's part if ut I am not getting enough fluid in fir my body to let go of it. But I know it will there. :-)

    Stalled for almost a week

Yeah, it will pass. My stall lasted a week and a half fluxing between 176 and 179 now it fluxing between 174 and 176. Keep in mnd that it is all Water weight because you are not getting in near enough calories to actually gain fat weight. Good job!
  9. Good morning! This is my first post here. Just a short background that might help you understand my predicament. I am 27 years old and currently weigh 339 lbs. I have Insulin Resistant PCOS but otherwise am fairly healthy besides my weight. I decided in May that I wanted to get banded. I went into my PCP to discuss it with her and she suggested I give weight loss one more hard shot before going under the knife. I agreed and gave myself 4 months to lose weight. I have lost 29 lbs since the end of May and reduced my BMI to 55.1. (I started at 368 with a BMI of 55.9) I have been seeing a dietician, cut out all soda and sugars and am trying to follow a diabetic diet (because of the PCOS). I just recently added 3 days a week at the gym with a personal trainer. The weight is coming off SLOW... but it is coming off. I still have a LONG way to go... I want to lose another 162lbs. So now my dilemma is, do I forget about the band because of my recent success? I still feel like it will help me, specially since I have SO much to lose. I have hunger issues throughout the night that I fight with Water or a small 100 calorie snack. I feel like the band would help reduce the between meal hunger.... problem is I am not sure if that reason is enough anymore? I also feel like the band will help get my PCOS in control, and eventually my husband and I could have a child. (previous attempts have failed due to the PCOS and weight) This is a HUGE reason for me. Also in the back of my mind I keep expecting myself to fail. I have never been this successful with weigh loss before. Usually I struggle to lose a few pounds and give up easily. I think this time it stuck a little better because I was determined to give it my all before surgery. So I am really not sure what to do. I have been thinking about WLS for a long time, when I heard about the band I knew this was my answer.... now I am not sure anymore. :straight Can anyone relate? Give me some advise? If anything I KNOW I can live the post-op life. I have been for 5 months. I went to an informational seminar required by my surgeon... but I doubt I will get an honest answer from them. They want to make $$ off of me so I know they will of course tell me I should have it. :straight
  10. Great job losing weight and staying on track for so long! That's a huge accomplishment, and it definitely shows that you are ready for a lifestyle change. My instinct is to tell you to go ahead and get the band. It will help you so much with the hunger. And, even if you do decide to splurge, the band will keep it in check so that it doesn't turn into a binge. One thing I've noticed is that even if I have a few bad days, I maintain my weight. It's almost like it has taken the upswing out of the yo-yo diet. It shouldn't have to be hard to lose weight, and for me (so far at least) it seems almost effortless. I'm sure I'll be singing a different tune when I have less to lose, but that's okay! And, it's totally compatible with getting pregnant, so you can just get an unfill when you get pregnant and then start losing again after you have a baby. I know it's a tough decision. You've been reading this board, so you know there are complications and frustrations. It's no magic bullet, but I think it could be a great tool to help you reach your goal. Good luck with your decision!
  11. Hello, I was banded on June 18th of this year and had my first fill in a 10cc band on Sept. 2. I now have about 3cc's. I will go for my second fill tomorrow, but kind of want to know if any of you didn't experience getting anything stuck, sliming/PB'ing at this stage in your journey. I know a lot of you have trouble with certain kinds of food, but I can eat anything. Tortilla chips, steak, chicken all of the things others have problems with. Is my band working???? I am not losing/gaining any weight. And to top it all off, my hair is falling out and feels so unhealthy. :cool2: Thanks!!!!

    Hernia repair with lapband?

Shirley, I read your journal. You've sure been through a lot! But great job on your weight loss so far. There's no telling what you'll be able to do with a new knee, too. Keep up the good work and best wishes on your knee surgery.

    Start or enjoy!

Be careful not to lose too much if your insurance company has a minimum BMI. That's what my dilema is right now. I have to be above 40 BMI but I cannot gain any weight from my first appt. Which is about a 4 lb difference between the 2. Good luck.

8 weeks weight loss. 55 lbs down. Surgery 11/6/14. Don't mind the hair. Progress pics at work lol.

Hi to all fellow UK sleevers

Welcome on board Yorkshire Girl, you won't regret your journey at all! I had my op nearly 3 months ago here in Newcastle upon Tyne, had to self pay though, because I was last in priority list for the NHS so would have to wait for about 18 months. My surgeon, Mr Small (who also does the bariatrics for NHS Sunderland) was fantastic, as was the rest of his team. I too did the milk based diet, which was fine cause I love yogurth. My Dr said the same, a bit of fish or chicken would be fine if I was desperate, but in the end I stuck to the diet, was a bit hungry but I was so focused that it was fine. My consultant told me that my liver was "beautiful" that he had never seen a healthier and lovielr liver, so it was worth the hard work. I'm halfway to my target weight and very very happy. I wont recommend you to go on myfatsecret.com to track your calories, it's really helpful, the best of luck to you!

Hi to all fellow UK sleevers

Hi Helen, I'm having my op done in my local hospital in Dewsbury on the NHS. I come under Mid Yorkshire PCT incorporating Huddersfield, Wakefield & Pontefract areas. Anyone having the op done has to come to Dewsbury for referral and all their appointments and to have the surgery. My surgeon is Mr Clive White who also does the procedure privately at the Spire hospital in Elland. He has years of experience. He has been an upper GI cancer speciallist for years and performed partial and full gastrectomies on cancer patients before the VSG came in for weight loss. He is really nice and I have every confidence in him. I can have some fruit and veg on the pre op diet, woo hoo ! I'll have to get a bit creative with that won't I ? I asked Mr White if it would be a complete disaster if I had the odd bit of fish or chicken if I get desperate, he said he has no problem with that. I think he would prefer that rather than me going completely off the wagon and guzzling buckets of rubbish LOL !!! I live on my own, so I'm getting as organised as I can. All my friends are lining up to help and I have a direct line to my GP surgery, for any post op issues, as I work for them ! I think the main issue I have at first is working out how to feed my cats without busting a gut LOL !!!! I've been trying to train them to jump up to be fed, but they're not having any of that so far ! Thanks for replying and for the advice, look forward to joining you on the loosers bench. Best wishes Angela x

    1 week till surgery

Pretty good. Currently at a weight stall. Very very very normal but definitely a mood killer. But I'm almost back to normal I would say. Just trying to adjust to this new life. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  20. The approach after RNY gastric bypass surgery is to control the volume of food per meal and is not focused on calories. As your food volume goes up, your calories will likewise go up. As you near the end of the "Weight Loss" phase and begin to transition into the "Maintenance" phase your body will automatically transition between these phases and the rate of weight loss will dramatically slow down. One option that you have is controlling content of the food that you eat. Your daily Protein requirement is a combination of the protein that you obtain from supplements (Protein shakes, protein bars) combined with the amount of protein from your meals. If you concentrate on consuming high protein meals (and you track and monitor your protein intake) then you can reduce your reliance on protein supplements and the calories contained in those supplements. This will allow you to optimize your weight loss. Over time I went from 3 protein shakes a day, down to 2, down to 1 and then finally down to 0 (when my meal volume increased to 1 cup per meal).

    Ensure Protein Shakes

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as protein shakes. It is common for your taste buds to change after surgery. Many experience problems drinking protein shakes. You do not have to like protein shakes only tolerate them. There are many varieties of protein shakes available today. Experiment until you can find one you can tolerate. Whatever Protein shake you settle on it should be low on sugar and high on protein.

    Surgery tommorow!

Well I made it through the surgery and now wait to see when I can go home today . Initially the pain post-op was bad. It felt like someone was laying on my chest and kicked my side. After drugs and walking and a nap I started to feel better. I slept very little 2 to 4 hours at a time , hospitals are loud and bright! My throat was sore and my mouth was dry like the desert . I read the boards for support and review before and after pics to keep me inspired. I have a lot of weight to lose to reach goal and seeing that other sleevers have done it successfully makes me believe I can do it too, thank you!
  23. Blualert-thank you for the support and good luck on your journey as well. I am 32 years old 5ft8in 285lbs. Because i'm tall everyone is like"you're not that big" I have hid it well for to long. I told my friend think of all the pregnancy related weight issues you have like not being able to put on socks or walk from the parking garage to work without getting winded. Sitting in the seats at disney on ice and they hurt you because you are so big. Having to take breaks shaving your legs because it is to hard. I look forward to being done with all of that. I am done being enslaved by this fat body.

    New Kid

Hi everyone. I've been reading the forum a little bit and decided to join... I'm going to my first info session tonight for Mt. Carmel's bariatric surgeries. I have a typical sob story of being pretty healthy and fit through high school, then went to college, drank too much and didn't eat enough, stopped sports, took care of my dying mom got engaged and somehow gained 75 pounds in 3 years. I've been engaged 18 months and have been working my @$$ off but am not getting results that I want. The wedding is in 8 months and I refuse to buy a dress. So my sister, the skinny healthy one, said maybe it was time to try something else. I have great insurance and a BMI of 42. I'm I becoming completely naive to think that this can't just happen quickly? It seems like people have taken up to 6 months to get their surgery, and I don't have that much time. I think I'm pretty aware of what is going to happen and I wouldn't consider myself naive about the process. I just need it. NOW. This has probably incited some laughter, but I'm hoping there might be some encouragement out there as well???

    Gastric Sleever

IMO, a surgery that involves cutting holes in the anesthetized patient's abdomen, sticking instruments in there, moving around organs, and clamping a medical device around the stomach is invasive, so to me, both the band and the sleeve are invasive. But... the invasiveness of the sleeve is permanent. If you don't like it afterwards, you're stuck because the 75-80% of your stomach that was removed is never coming back. Neither is the sleeve adjustable. I lost my band for various reasons (mostly unrelated to the band itself). I thought the sleeve was going to be a good 2nd choice because it would elliminate my physical hunger, and it wouldn't require numerous adjustments to achieve optimal restriction, but I was wrong. Since my sleeve surgery, my physical hunger has been ferocious no matter what or how much or how often I eat, and I have to eat 8-10 times a day to keep my blood sugar under control. I've become anemic because of micronutrient malabsorption and have to take an Iron supplement every day. I've had to start taking metformin to treat my type 2 diabetes that was always controlled with diet and exercise before. I've also discovered that sleeve patients can dump just like gastric bypass patients do because the sleeve capacity is so small, food gets "dumped" into the intestines very quickly, causing me miserable discomfort from nausea, dizziness, and drenching sweats. Finally, I've discovered that sleevers can experience stuck episodes for the same reasons that bandsters do: careless eating. I've been told that I take a dim view of the sleeve since I loved my band so much. That may be true. I was sleeved on 8/16/12, so it may be too soon for me to judge anything about my sleeve. It's also true that the band isn't risk-free - but there's no such thing as a risk-free surgery of any type. The good news about my sleeve is that it's made it possible for me to lose the weight I had regained after losing my band in April. Jean
