    Cursed or blessed?

Sounds like a perfect recovery. I never been nauseous or had reflux or slimed or dumped, but it took me 3-4 months to feel really good. And I can eat whatever I want, too. Doesn't mean I do. Consider yourself blessed. What kind of "side effects" were you hoping for?

    What is happening

Congratulations! You may have reached The Dreaded Week-3 Stall a little early. It's perfectly normal, and just about all of us have suffered through it. You're not crazy, and your doctor didn't screw up. In fact, you might not lose any weight for two weeks or even longer. But don't worry – after that, the pounds will start falling off if you stick to your program. And, the inches will continue to come off even while the scale isn't budging. Here's a good article that explains why it happens and why we all have to go through it. Hang in there. Pretty soon it'll be in the rear-view mirror and you'll be dropping weight again! (Apologies to BP regulars who have seen this repeatedly, but it's a big deal to those who are going through it!)

  4. I am almost 3 years out and pretty much stay around 800. I am on 5'1", but maybe it would have been better if I hadn't restricted to calories for so long. If I get much more than that I tend to gain. I'm so used to eating this way that it's no bother.
  5. I'm 17 weeks out & I usually can only eat between 500-700. I'm very impressed with the 900 calories!
  6. I'm 8 weeks out and haven't hit 800 yet. I have my goal set to 700 and average under that, but I do try to get at least 70 gms of protein and focus on that.

    Finally in a Stall

Ok, so I finally hit the dreaded stall after 18 weeks post op. I have lost a great deal and am feeling really good about where I am but this is where I was afraid I would get stuck. I am now at the lowest weight I reached when killing myself to diet and exercise about 2 years ago. I know that my goal is 110 and it is achievable given that I am 5' tall and I know I have lots of flab on the lower half to lose. Seems like I am experiencing more restriction these days and pretty much don't care to eat so I am hoping that maybe I need to be much more deliberate with my Protein as I have been in the past. I would really like to be at goal by Christmas. I am also going to start working out more (right now only going once a week). I am happy that I am not gaining! But then again, not sure how I could with the little amount that I eat. Very happy with my sleeve, just need to get motivated to work this to my advantage now and actually see my weight get to my goal and stay there!
  9. Hi, I'm a 55 year old Dad, overweight most of my adult life, married, 3 adultish kids. My BMI is just under 50. I decided 6 months ago that I want to have the sleeve surgery. I found a doctor and just finished my 6 month wait for Blue Shield CA. My doctor required that I learn to eat right and lose weight prior to surgery, which I began doing in earnest on January 2. Since then I have religiously exercised and limited my calories to about 1000/day. I have lost 25 pounds, my doctor was very pleased and agreed to submit my case for insurance approval. Woohoo! However, having met this objective, I find that I am kind discouraged... As I have been dieting/exercising since January I have been feeling much better and feeling especially encouraged with this progress. I can do this, dieting isn't so hard, I don't miss the calories or the variety, blah blah blah. But the minute I got my met my goal, I started slacking off, feeling like its ok to eat a little more and exercise a little less. All the stuff I have done with ever other stinking diet in my life. I commit to a diet and follow it religiously. It makes me feel good and feel good about my self. I drink the koolade and think I am cured and can do this for the rest of my life, until I reach that goal. Then like clock work I slip a little here, and then a little more there and before I know it I have lost all my self discipline and am right back to my old habits. Even though it is literally 2 days since I reached my goal and I haven't gone completely off the deep end, I know the feeling and I know where I am heading. Sure, I may get to schedule my surgery and that will FORCE me back in line, and I may even get back on the band wagon and be religiously "GOOD" for some period. But I feel like it is doomed to go my old path. Maybe the time frame will be longer and maybe I will lose a ton more weight, but eventually I will find myself back on that slippery slope. It really depresses me and makes me feel like I am an idiot to go through this horribly invasive and expensive procedure if I am just going to "F" it up just like every diet I have ever tried.... Don't know that there are words that will make me feel differently, but I am so invested in this at this point that I would love some help. Thanks to all.

    Acid Reflux

Two weeks post op today and I have had some severe heartburn that comes and goes, but seems to be getting a little better with time. My surgeon recommended that I just continue with the Omeprazole for now.

    Need encouragement

It's most likely you won't be hungry at all for a while and won't want to eat. You may have to fight head hunger though. In the next few weeks, learn about head hunger /emotional eating and get your mind in a good place for after surgery! I read this book and also go to therapy for emotional eating. https://www.amazon.com/Emotional-First-Aid-Kit-Practical-ebook/dp/B0054RXXS0?ie=UTF8&btkr=1&redirect=true&ref_=dp-kindle-redirect
  12. I had massive hair loss that began almost right away, but got really bad starting in month 4 and continued until my weight loss slowed way down which was month 12. It started growing back as quickly as it started coming out so while I was losing it was coming in. My hair is now coming in everywhere but it has changed significantly. The texture is much thicker, coarse, curly and even a bit frizzy. I spoke with several doctors while I was going through this and everyone told me my hair would stop or slow down when my weight loss slowed down. Right around 12 months my weight slowed to a crawl which scared me because I still had more to lose but that is the point where you really have to work harder to continue losing. I am still losing but about 3-5 lbs per month and I am 3lbs from my ideal weight.
  13. I just called my insurance company to check on the status of my approval/denial. The told me that a letter was mailed to my dr on 3/25 stating that I met the requirements for the surgery!!! I'm SO happy and SO nervous!!
  14. Well, I was going in on the 28th. But, due to a work conflict on my wife's part, we had to bump it a couple of weeks to October 12th. Not a big deal, but I still spent the better part of a couple of hours seeing if I could work out a plan to keep the 28th (drive myself, wait around the lobby for my wife to pick me up a few hours, etc). I did, however, get word from my insurance that I was approved! We were ready to go self pay if need be, but this is better. Last time, when my wife had her bypass, the hospital billed $125K for just it's part (a pre planned procedure with a two day stay and no complications. 800 (x 2) dollar morphine!!!), of which Anthem disallowed 80% or so. I wasn't looking forward to dealing with the hospital on my own without the insurance company to back me up. I know it is all a shell game between providers and insurers, but geez. My wife had an emergency gall bladder removal with an ER visit and a two day stay at a different hospital earlier last year was $35K total. I went to my one insurance required support group meeting last week. Interesting, that of 30+ people in the group, only myself and one other pre-op were going LAP-BAND®®®®. All the others , including all the post op, were sleeve or bypass. One other pre op explained she was fighting with insurance for the sleeve, though she had been approved for LAP-BAND®®®® or bypass. She was very against a foreign object in her body. She felt they all suffer from rejection and infection, no offense to the two of us going LAP-BAND®®®®. Different strokes. Cheers, Erick
  15. Hi, I am obviously new here. I hadnt considered lap band seriously until a few months ago, and due to some recent events in my life I have decided to go for it. I had my initial consult at OSUMC here in Columbus. That went well, I have my psych and sleep study appointments set up. Hopefully I will only need the 3 months of classes and with no snags, I hope to have surgery around my birthday in February. Looking forward to reading more here.
  16. Welcome Gina! I had VSG on 9/2/10 and I also had a history of dvt's and pe's. I had my filter placed about 1 week before surgery, everything went fine and i'm doing well. They went in about 3 weeks after my surgery to remove the filter but they we unable to retrieve it.......the dr said that it's fine to stay there the rest of my life actually. I'm okay with that because I feel like I have protection in case I ever get another clot in my legs I know that it wouldn't be able to travel to my lungs like before. I wish you luck with you up coming procedures and your weight loss.
  17. Thank you all for the kind and encouraging words! I am on day 3 of the dreaded protein pre-surg diet and I'm dealing better than I thought.. I don't love it, but, I'm doing it...

    Hello!

Hi everyone. I wanted to introduce myself. I started my journey last July with my first appointment with my primary care doctor. He has been amazing and supportive and has given me no trouble at all regarding the many referrals I have asked for and the note he had to write for insurance. I just received word today that I am authorized through my insurance for the surgery and have been given a surgery date of 3/20/09. I have had a few bumps in the road along the way (knee surgery) but am feeling better and ready to have the surgery and begin my new life. I need to figure out how to put one of those ticker thingies on and will try to do in a bit. I have been checking in here occasionally and have learned a lot and am excited to share this journey with you all. I can't believe it's almost finally here. Yay!
  19. guess what? i got that same taste too. unfortanetly for me i still have it. it started with my pre op Fluid diet and now one week post op i still have it, even though it is less now. i will see my doctor monday and i will bring this up. my sister (not banded) said it's because my body was detoxing from all the gunk/junk in my insestines, yuck! i kinda believe her. when growing up i remember when i told my mom that i had a "tummy ache" she would say let me see you tounge, yeah castrol oil it was...lol :/ but i agree that lots of teeth and tounge brushing really helps!!! good luck to you and keep us posted!
  20. Hi Everyone, My name is Gina. I just joined this forum last week. I came across it by accident actually. I was researching information on the Sleeve procedure and I bumped into this wonderful forum. I've been hesitant to post anything because I am just learning about the procedure and diets, etc. But, I wanted to introduce myself. I am 33 years old. I just started my 2 week pre-op diet today. I'll be having surgery on 12/20/10. This forum has been a tremendous help on what to expect and how to prepare for this upcoming event! Surprisingly, I'm not really scared, I'm excited, I can't wait to start this journey, although it won't be an easy one. Has anyone ever had the VSG and had a filter inserted for DVT? I have history of blood clots and have been on Coumadin for over a year, but, my surgeon is going to have my Vascular surgeon come in and implant the filter to avoid the blood clots. I'm pretty sure I'll have more questions coming up, but, I just wanted to introduce myself. Gina
  21. Hello all. My name is Jenn and I am new to this site. I have started my journey with VSG but have not had the procedure yet. I have had the initial consultation, insurance approval and dietitian meeting. I am new to the Texas area and am wanting to get some more information on my doctor, Dr Jerome Schrapps with Southeast Texas Bariatric Beaumont location, preferably by someone who has had the procedure. I have the diet class and psych eval next week so it looks as if things are moving right along. My family is very supportive but I am extremely nervous.

    Christus In Beaumont

Oh boy...I have Dr Dean...and he referred me to Dr Monk...after 2 weeks of trying to get in touch to schedule an appt, I called Dr Deans offc and they gave me her email. I sent her an email myself...a very nice one stressing the importance of getting the eval done as she was the only thing I was waiting on. Well, another week went by with no word so I went out and found someone on my own thru ins to do it. In the meantime, she called and got extremely RUDE with me about 3 weeks after I emailed her. Early in the morning too...so I had a few choice words for her. I come from Ft Worth. Only moved to Beaumont recently. And I have NEVER been spoken to that way by a doctor. So I was shocked, not too happy about it. And not very nice...I sure am glad I didn't have to be evaluated by her... Did either of you have hernias that had to be repaired? Did you have to do an endoscopy prior to surgery? Did the hosp require you to pay the out of pocket max up front??

    Week 3 blues

I am 5 weeks and some days (like today) I still struggle with getting enough food in. On certain days my body just isn't into it and nothing sounds appetizing or I feel full/nauseous after a few bites. My doc told me that if any food stage is a struggle you may not be ready for it and there's nothing wrong with going back to the previous stage for a while.

    Passports

I got mine in February and I'm sure glad I did. One clue to those who haven't. Get your photos done before you to the office where you're having it processed. Have your papers filled out online and printed, in hand. You don't hold up the folks standing in line behind you and pics are cheaper at somewhere like Kinkos than they are at the post office. I think it took about 6 weeks to get mine back in the mail.
