  1. Maybe its just me but I think being secretive about it has its pitfalls as well - like you're sending the message it is something to be ashamed of if your daughters find out. And going on some extreme liquid diet is hardly modelling healthy eating behaviour - its being done for a surgical reason and personally I would be up front about it. I think taking a positive step and getting your weight under control for once and all is healthy for children to see. I dont see why you should hide it. The best thing to do is never get fat in the first place, which none of us have managed, so I see taking a positive, decisive step and losing the weight as a lot better than them spending their adolescence seeing you on a round of failed fad diets. There are so many influences on body image and esteem and you as a parent are only one of many. So be proud of what you're doing for yourself, making it obvious that excess weight has bad health implications is as important as letting them know they're loved no matter what their shape or size.

What if you Can't exercise Pre Op?

I am in a similiar situation with my feet. I also have already had 3 cortisone shots, orthotics and I have little relief. I am reporting to my primary that I am walking on my treadmill daily and he is documenting this during my 6 month weigh in appts. I won't dare say I can't exercise. I am afraid that this will give the insurance company reason to deny. My podiatrist wrote a great letter supporting lap band surgery. My last appt with the primary is in May and I will submit to insurance. I believe that with the lap band procedure and weight reduction I will see a drastic change to my feet. If not I will deal with it as I go along. I would play it safe and report some type of daily exercise. Comply with everything insurance wants don't give them reason for denial. This is all just my opinion.

Creed, You indicate a weakness for ice cream. Either try the weight watchers ice cream (comes in individual serving sizes) or buy their ice cream bars. That way when the craving hits you, you can enjoy your treat and it's not that bad for you!!!
  4. I have 70 days till surgery and am trying to come up with new, exciting things that will keep me focused on my goal. One suggestion I have heard is to increase my strength training as this might help with loose skin after surgery. "Increasing" my strength training exercises is nearly impossible as I don't do much currently. I have done a couple of internet searches and found tons of fitness magazine strength training routines. I'm wondering if anyone has any great resources for strength training, is there a good routine you're using that you enjoy? Something you've been super successful with?

    No more weight loss

This is very normal so don't sweat it. Plateauing is something you will get used to. You may need multiple fills before you really start shedding pounds or it may happen right after the first one. Everyone is different. For me it was after my third that the weight really flew off and I could feel the restriction.
  7. Hello! I'm new here. I'm a Juvenile diabetic and was diagnosed when I was about 5 years old. After that time I had gained weight rapidly. Once I was about 18 I was also diagnosed as a double-diabetic. Now not only am I a Juvenile Diabetic I also suffer from insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes. I haven't found much info on type 1 diabetics getting this surgery. I really need help as I have been suffering from the complications of becoming insulin resistant. While in the mean time if I'm able to lose the weight I might be able to reverse the type 2 diabetes and be able to manage my type 1 without much issues. I have lost a very little amount of weight but not enough to make a dent in this issue. Yet ...but someday I will! My A1c is embarrassingly high! I try so hard to manage a disease where I'm completely dependant on insulin, BUT my body is strongly resistant against it. This feels like a lose-lose battle without the extra help. I also heal slowly and suffer nerve damage, and I'm still pretty young. This scares me horribly! Since turning 26 I outgrew my parent's insurance, so maybe I can find a nice insurance plan to help cover the procedure in the marketplace. Back on subject though, Is there any other double diabetics, type 1's or any one else out there that has any of these troubles? Like the slow healing... I really want to get this surgery, but will I be more open for complications? Sure! I was just looking for any kind of tips, advise from other diabetics whom have had the sleeve. I was even thinking of getting the sleeve and see if they can take not remove as much of the stomach just so I can have some additional stomach there. In case of any surgical complications the extra "stomach" might be life-saving. Leaks are scary and so is the aspect of healing slowly from a procedure like this is something to prepare for? What would you do if you were in such a situation that this is a viable option but with huge risks attatched? My mind is going in all sorts of directions and I would love to go in the right one, if you know what I mean. Sorry for the length, and thank you for taking the time to read this post ♥

    Need A Little Advice

Thanks for your reply. maybe I should just get my BMI down to 40 and try to hang out there until the end of the year. I just don't want to gain anymore weight waiting for open my new insurance.
  10. I am so excited I woke up this morning hopped on the scale and boom I was 139..... This just keeps getting better!!!!!! I do have a question what happens when I reach goal, I have 19lbs to go how do you maintain that without continuing to lose more weight?

    Waiting on approval

I just spoke with my bariatric coordinator. She has my PCP records and was concerned about my "6 months" of medically approved diet. Although I went to the doctor monthly (with minor exception) for the required 6 months, there was one month that I didn't make it within the 30 days since last appointmen. That was due to scheduling conflicts, etc. and I got in as soon as scheduling allowed. I guess we'll see what happens. I can go back 15 years documenting my weight and comorbidities, but I'm half way expecting them to deny and make me do it all over again. But that would have been my fault. I find it interesting that my insurance will pay 80% for 3 seperate treatments if you are a drug addict or alcoholic, but only 50% for obesity treatment (only once). Not only that, if you are an alcoholic/drug addict, your portion counts towards your out of pocket maximum for the year. For obesity treatment, it does not count towards your out of pocket maximum, but it sure does count towards your lifetime benefit! Just needed to rant for a moment.

    cigna approval

I have Cigna also. I didn't lose any weight during my 6 months of supervised weight loss attempts and they still approved me.
  13. I am 7 months out and I just have noticed in the last month or so it is mostly gone. I am sure it is dependent on how much everyone has to lose and how and where they hold their weight. When I was younger I always had my weight mostly in my lower body but as I got older it was in my mid area also. So 7 months for me. I lift weights 4 days a week and working my core is one of the most important area for me.
  14. @@bugsy72 Wow...you're able to eat bananas a month out from your surgery and its dietician approved? Enjoy! My Doc and Dietician only gives the green light on berries from the fruit category and only after their patients have lost 75% of their weight...they really prefer for us to be in the maintenance phase before adding fruits and a few other items.
  15. 1) How much did you pay for brachiaplexy? 2) If your insurance paid for it .. how did you get the medical justification for your arms? did you have to have ulcers? pain? etc... 3) Did you go to multiple plastic surgeons for opinions or just 1 and were you happy with what they said? Reasons for questions... I am 1 year post op and in need of something- My arms are hideous and my legs are too... I found out that I cannot have my legs done as of yet beacause I still have more weight to loose and need to plateau first... Plus I have Lymphedema which makes me a greater risk for any lower limb procedures.. RE: my arms.. surgeon said they are way bigger than he has seen and will need to do in 2 surgeries no matter if I do 1 now or later .. and also my scar will beon the back of my arm from elbow to arm pit instead of inside due to the huge amount he has to remove. 2nd surgery will be in same scar line... I was quoted a price of 7800.00 and am floored that it is that much considering I will be a "life long" patinet with everything else- My insurance will cover my stomach and legs but so far not my arms and this particular doc said it is not "medically necessary" despite each one needing like 6.5 lbs off !!!!!! So - Do I search for another to prove medical necessity or search for cheaper do I try and find one to do pro-bono do I go to a foreign country/? LOL latter suggestion NOT an option.. Any feedback is appreciated as always!

  17. @@Sjane have they run any blood work for your hormone levels? have you tried going off hormonal birth control, for good or at least until your cycle begins to function normally? I'm guessing it is your body adjusting to your weight loss, and switching different types of hormonal methods will also mess with it. Good luck! I went off bc pills last July and I told the bariatrician today that I wouldn't be going back on hormonal birth control - I want nothing messing me up for when I'm ready to get pregnant.

Oh Lord :/ That's my whole reasoning for wanting a revision is that for the life of me I can't loose anything after getting the liquid out I've gained 15lbs and now that I have liquid put back in I can't even loose the 15lbs I gained!! apart from having some minor issues with my bad. 21. Hey ladies gm. Just wanted to share a great fine. I know we're all on here losing weight and excited about getting into clothes that we only dreamt of wearing. It can get very expensive as we go from different sizes and tryingto find room in our closet for clothes that we no longer wear and have to decide what to do with those clothes. If youre like me, your closet probably have 3 to 4 different sizes in it. But ive found a Gem that will allow us to wear the clothes we want to, while not digging a large hole in our bank account. Its called Gwynnie bee.com. It allows you to look at all the looks with clothes that theyve put together and theyll send you the clothes. You can wear them as long as yount to, send them back and theyll send you more clothes thats in your rack, or you can keep them. I didnt want to have a closet full of 3x clothes, so i tried this out. So gwynnie bee allows you to have that dreamy wardrobe at a low price. The price depends on the looks that you want to try.

    Not losing weight

I'm 4 weeks post RNY today. As above if unsure ask your dietitian or doctor, but some ideas: I'd say log your food and fluid intake to make sure you're taking in enough fluid and so that you know what your calorie intake is. My dietitian told me about a patient who had complained he wasn't losing weight during the liquid part of the diet and when she delved into it, he was liquidising mars bars. I doubt you're doing this but always worth recording your intake I'd say? I've always been told by doctors that building muscle can add weight (or mean that you don't lose weight), so maybe your exercise regime is building muscle at the expense of a weight loss? I haven't experienced a stall (yet!) but many people say they do have this at about 3 weeks? Only other things I can think of would be constipation or fluid retention? Good luck!

    I Need Help?!

Hi Ricky, You're right, you do have a lot of questions! I think you'll find a lot of answers if you read through some old threads here and on other bandster boards (SmartBandsters on Yahoo Groups is one of my favorites). To get you started, though: You ask if this will work for you. Only you can decide that. From where I sit, banding is a great idea for people who are morbidly overweight (you probably qualify on that score) and who have been unable to get control of their weight through diet and exercise. It's not a picnic, of course, and you have to be prepared to say goodbye to eating the way you're used to. It's by no means a magic potion and if you try hard enough to get around it you could manage to not lose weight. The band is not "unsafe" for anyone. Indeed, as a diabetic you stand to improve your health a great deal by losing weight. Your condition makes you more of a candidate for the band, not less. You ask if Cigna covers the band. Again, this is specific to your policy, your company, your medical condition, and your state. Cigna, like most carriers, is not making it easy to qualify for major elective surgery, but if you are persistent and meet the medical criteria they do pay for weight-loss surgery. The cost of the procedure varies from place to place. In the U.S. it's probably a minimum of $30,000 when you add in the hospital costs and everything. You can get it done in Mexico or Europe for about a third of that. The place to start is where you are, here. Then visit your primary care physician and make sure you get a diagnosis of Morbid Obesity (the diagnosis code is 278.01 and the sooner that gets into your medical records the more likely insurance will pay for the surgery). Once you get the diagnosis, get a referral from your PCP to a surgeon who performs the procedure. Even if you don't need a referral, get you PCP to put in your file a letter saying he believes weight-loss surgery is indicated for you. This is the first building block in your file of information that you will eventually present to Cigna. Stick around the board and ask questions, you'll find we're all pretty friendly!

    Pre-Surgery Diet

I've started my pre-surgery diet a wee bit early. I'm supposed to start it 3 weeks prior, but I've started it about 6 weeks early. I've lost 12 pounds so far and I feel great! I'm a bit hungry, but that's okay. Nothing tastes as good as thin feels, right?! My pre-surgery diet, from my nutritionist, is a Slim Fast shake for breakfast, a Lean Cuisine for lunch and a Lean Cuisine for dinner (or variations on that theme). I can have Jell-O pudding (low/no sugar) and low-fat yogurt as a snack. Plus I have a no sugar fruit popsicle for dessert. I'm drinking a TON of water and Crystal Light Iced Tea every day. I'm constantly in the bathroom, but that's okay. I get a lot of exercise getting up from my desk and walking down the hall. I'm eating apples and bananas too and every now and then I eat a salad (with regular dressing - gasp/horror!). I can't go completely off the deep end! LOL Basically, I've stopped drinking diet soda and eating out. I'm limiting my carbs (no bread, rice, potatoes, tortilla's) and cheese intake (sigh - I miss cheese). My goal is to lose 10-15 pounds before my May 13th surgery (found out today at my pre-anestesia appointment that my surgery was bumped up by two days! I'm at 300 now (ugh), but the realization that soon I'll have a "2" as my starting number of my weight has me giddy. The other realization is that I'll never, ever be over 300 lbs again. Oh my god...I could cry. I am so happy.
  25. Did anyone else see the news about lap-band being approved for lower BMI patients? Here is a link to one of the articles: http://www.stltoday.com/news/national/bf0ef1ec-62b7-5f8e-adec-5151c1de71b5.html I suppose it is good that BMI requirements are coming down for some weight loss surgery, but as a lap-band revision hopeful, I am really concerned about how the news media is covering all this. The article says there are only 2 weight loss surgery options: lap band and gastric bypass. I don't know, with all the lap-band billboards and this news coverage, I am really frustrated that there isn't more real information out there. I am so glad this board is here - it has given me hope of a better option. Have a great weekend, everybody!
