  1. I probably didn't walk as much as others that got in there protein from the beginning. But, I could not tolerate any of the Protein drinks, mixes, even the ready to drink made me sick, or the taste was horrific. When I first came home, I was pumped full of nutrients and calories through a pic line, and that gave me what I needed initially. I only went about 3 weeks without getting in my protein. Obviously, I didn't jump into 60 grams per day when I first hit mushies because restriction is extremely obvious on mushies. I had to work my way up. I took my Vitamins and supplements religiously, and wasn't willing to miss those. Overall, I had a super slow recovery due to my complications, but I don't necessarily think going without the full 60grams of protein per day set me back anymore than I already was. Hope that makes sense.
  2. I put his in this forum because I'm ore op ( and so excited and nervous) hopefully that was ok. I need to know what kinds of Protein sources are popular around these parts for the first weeks post op, healthy please. I am not a fan of HFCs or artificial sweeteners outside of stevia. Does that leave slim pickings?? Also, I saw someone mention once that someone had the wrong kind of protein. What are the right and wrong kinds? I'm in a small town with a Walmart super center but can order online if necessary. Thanks, Amy
  3. Hello, I am about 7 weeks out from surgery. I am having horrible heartburn. I am allergic to ALL proton pump inhibitors. Prilosec ect... I have been taking pepcid but I either throw it back up or it just dont work. I found some tums extra in my cabinet can I take these? Does anyone out here in sleeve world have any suggestion that can help me. I am so miserable. The doctor gave me carafate. Which coats the stomach dont see where it is much good either. Any help would be appreciated : )

when do you get your surgery date?

I have to complete insurance requirements & 6 months of visits. Get approved by board at insurance before I can even meet a surgeon. At first surgeon visit they give you the date usually 2-3 weeks from then or longer if u desire to push it. allons-y
  5. 7 weeks post op and every now and then I may accidentally nit chew enough and it horrifying! Its like I feel it moving through my system! I have to catch my breath the pain is so awful. I only do it if I'm eating on the go. I try to sit down at every meal now Sent from my Nexus S 4G using RNYTalk
  6. My name is Shauntrell and I was banned 3/10/14. After the first 2 weeks of my liquid diet I had lost 18 lbs. I thought I was on the right track. After my 6 week post-op visit I was down a total of 22 lbs. I rcvd my first fill which was 3 cc's on 4/23/14. Afterwards, I felt no restriction at all and was hungry all the time. 12 week check up I rcvd a fill of .5 cc's and had only lost 4 lbs. 18 week checkup was 7/16...still feeling hungry and had only lost .5 lbs. My dr gave me another 1.5 cc's. I am currently at 5 cc's but still feeling no restriction at all. Any advice? My next appt is 8/27.
  7. Be very careful about eating solid foods this soon unless your surgeon says it's okay. Part of the first six weeks or so after surgery is to allow your body time to heal up. Your band was stitched in place on your stomach wall. Those stitches need time to heal up. If you eat solids before you should, you run the risk of affecting the healing of those stitches. Just because you didn't feel anything doesn't mean it's okay to eat improperly. As to your two pounds loss, that's good to have (as is any weight loss), but it's normal to lose a fair amount in the few weeks right after surgery. Your body is getting rid of fluids taken in during the surgery, and your system is adjusting to how you're eating now. So a certain amount is weight lost is normal, and you should see even more weight coming off over the next few weeks. But again, the focus should be on healing up. Take things slow and take it easy on yourself. The weight WILL come off, but you need to adapt to the stages of recovery. Developing patience is the hardest part of this. Good luck with things. Dave
  8. Depending on what you are supposed to do post-op and for how long determines what you should do next. I felt like I was starving on day 3 post-op. I kept trying to do the Protein shakes but I couldn't deal with the sweetness of mine anymore. Only being able to have either sweet or salty was driving me nuts. I started on soft foods early. I made an omelet from 2 large eggs, some fat free milk, and 1 slice of cheese. I ate it VERY slowly to make sure I could eat it at all. It went down fine. So I kept eating the omelet. After I had 1/2 of it, I was able to throw it away. (Proudest moment ever!). I slowly started to eat soft, mushy foods the rest of the week. Mostly I have a 1 egg omelet and that's it for Breakfast. Tuna or chicken salad for lunch. Chicken, ground beef, ground turkey for dinner. I keep soft foods in the house and stick with those that have lots of protein. I go for my first fill on Thursday and I'm practically eating normally now. If I find that I'm still hungry, I try to figure out if it's head hunger or real hunger. At the suggestion of someone else from here today, I started a myfitnesspal account to track my food. The thing to remember is, that site (from what I've seen so far) does not factor in that you have a band so your food level is restricted. I was shocked that according to the site that I am not eating anywhere near enough in a day. I'm not even hitting the minimum of 1200 calories. Myfitnesspal will help you track your calories and your protein. Bonus tip: DO NOT EAT FRUITS WITH SKINS! They do not digest and could cause more harm than good. Making healthier choices is what all this is about. Concentrate on that and every time you have to eat, make the best choice you can. You will have moments where you slip up, recognize that you slipped up and what you can do about it in the future. Also, listen to your doc. If you are comfortable with trying soft foods early, stick with stuff that is protein packed. It will help you stay fuller longer, help you heal faster, and will help you feel included. Try to keep down to the appropriate portion size too. Best of luck to you.
  9. It worked for me! I never had the band, but unless I was taking phentermine, I was a bottomless pit. I could eat and eat and eat until I was stuffed and then crave more food 30 minutes later. Even when I did WWs, Atkins, South Beach, etc. food was constantly on my mind. Phentermine was the only thing that really turned that off for me until sleeve surgery. Now I hate being full. I think about food, but I don't crave it. I crave certain things from time to time, but it's a"I'd love to eat some..." not a "I **MUST** eat something..." I am three years out and I am thankful for this change every day.

    First day off mushies

Quinoa was added at the 4 week mark for me. I LOVE it. I prepare it like rice; the way it says on the package. Then I either eat it as a small side to a Protein, or mix it in with something I'm cooking. One night I sautéed some shrimp in a little olive oil, garlic and lemon. Then I mixed in the quinoa. The juice made the quinoa SO good, and it was kind of like a Chinese dish; shrimp and fried rice-ish (without the soy sauce).
  12. The premade shakes worked best for me to insure the Protein. I used Atkins, Nutrilife and Premier. The Premier has 30 protein compared to 15 for the other two. I liked the chocolate flavor in all three. They are 11 oz and it would take me about 2 hours to drink it. In the beginning, I sometimes had two of those a day. I filled it around that with potato Soup, mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, yogurt, SF chocolate pudding (LOL). I was fortunate that I was able to go from clears to full to mushy by the end of the first week, and felt great. Be cautious, use common sense and do what makes your stomach and you feel the best. Good Luck!!

    abdominal pain

The area can still be sore from surgery since you are only 8 weeks out. I would continue to watch lifting and pulling. THe port is sewed to that muscle and can stay tender for quiet some time but it shouldn't be causing severe pain - maybe discomfort, but nothing serious. If the incision area is red, swollen and infected, you need to see a doctor right away. If you run a fever - it means it is infected. When you lay down on your back - feel around for the port - sometimes you can feel it that way. I couldn't feel my port right away. Take it easy for awhile and if it continues, I would make sure my doctor knows my name and get an appt, not just a number. Good luck
  14. Thanks for the encouragement you guys! I guess that I didn't think of people including their pre-surg weight loss. I will try bumping up my calorie intake. I have just been afraid to do it because of the stall. I go for another fill on the 31st so hopefully that will help with the hungry feeling. I got 1.2cc on my first fill so I am at 3.2cc right now, she originally put in 1.8cc but had to remove .6cc because I couldn't get the sip of Water to go down. I am going to continue with the exercise because it just makes me feel good! I have noticed that my clothes are fitting a little more loosely in the waist and thighs and my stomach has gone down some. Just not seeing it on the scale. Good luck to you all as well! By the way where did you get the weight loss ticker from?
  15. Yuppers! I'm 3 months out now and if i eat just 1 bite too much, it feels like it is crawling back up my throat . . .a bad feeling. . most days i get in 550 - 700 calories a day. . . somedays it's alot more but only sometimes. . like today for example i had about 900 calories, but it was mostly junk like melba toast and a piece of dark belgium chocolate, had a funky day and along with funky days comes snacky days. . . oh well, otherwise i ate ok. . I haven't gained at all (knock on wood) but then i only weigh once a month at the doctor appts. . . so i don't know if i gain or stall at all. . .
  16. BatnTab - well, things aren't going so well. I am exercising and walking 3 miles everyday. I am trying to eat like I still have my band, but darn it, I am hungry. I have managed to gain 9 pounds so now I am angry with myself. I am drinking lots of Water, gave up all diet soda and faithfully attend my surgeon's support group..I wish I had my will-power back. The doctor is not concerned - yet- and says this is normal and just to wait it out. It will stop and my body will start responding. He said it is the just my body adjusting. I hope it adjusts soon, I can't gain anymore weight! I have noticed that my portions are larger even though I still use my small plates - they are just fuller. This whole thing makes me angry, I just wish it made me angry enough to stop stuffing my face. Hope you are doing well. I keep re-reading your post for support and encouragement. Wow, I never thought about "not having my band". I guess the joke is on me. No additional surgery talked about yet (it has been 6 weeks) but I will be talking with him soon if the scale doesn't stop going up. I would be happy with just staying the same weight for right now. 17. I am 3.5 mths post sleeve and am also having back pain. Chiropractor says week mussels and my posture and weight is distributed different with my weight loss. No pain meds for me but I am getting mesage and chiro. New_Me 2019
  18. Hi, My name is Gigi. I am considering WLS and have been doing research on the lap band and VSG. I went to a seminar on 8/19 thinking I wanted a lap band and realized it was not really a good option for me. I have a lot of allergies and do not think the idea of putting a foreign object in my body a good one. As a result, I have been thinking about the VSG. I am 5?7?, around 282 lbs with a BMI around 45; I also have asthma, high-blood pressure and moderate to sever sleep apnea? so I am a good candidate. I still have some concerns especially as I have never had to have an operation. I?m scared! My insurance covers the procedure but I have to do a 6 month doctor supervised diet and exercise plan. I am mainly considering this procedure to improve my health before I add more complications to the mix. Looking better is just a plus. I have been reading the entries on here for while so most of my questions about complications and results have been answered. I am still interested in knowing if there are any major restrictions to exercising after the procedure. I have always been a big girl ? size 14 in high school, while all my friends were size 9 -10 ? and extremely active. I have taken dance lessons most of my life and even when I was in a dance troop where I was dancing 6 days a week, I was never smaller than a size 12/14. So what I am interested in knowing is ? after the procedure do you lose your muscle? When you lose all that weight, is your skin extremely lose that you require surgery to correct? Do you know if I will be called for my initial appointment before I start the dr supervised diet and exercise plan or is that something that typical takes place after you have your initial appointment? Has anyone had there VSG done at Columbia University Medical Center/New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York? That is where I would be getting my surgery if it proves viable for me. Thanks for any information! It is greatly appreciated.

    Wellesse Protein Product?

I know the info on the Wellesse website is provided to sell their products but they specifically say it is good for bariataric surgery patients. I'd like to find out more about this product. 10g of protein in one ounce while my stomach is the size of an egg sounds great to me. My protein shakes now give me 20 to 23 grams of protein but they are 8 ounces of liquid -- it would take hours to get it all down and I'd still need more. 10 g in one ounce liquid sounds smart -- just for the early weeks. I am going to a required nutritio class on Monday. I'll ask about it, altho I bet the NUT knows nothing. I have yet to meet a NUT working for a bariataric clinic that knew anything about the needs of bariatric patients and nutrition.

    Gave my husband the finger...

Skinny people just don't understand what us fat people go through. Here I am struggling to get through this pre-op diet and my lovely husband says he wants a big fat greasy pan pizza from pizza hut for dinner. That is like my favorite food in the whole world and I have been deprived for more than a month now. I immediately left the kitchen and hibernated in the bedroom when he came in with it and gave him the finger as I was exiting the room to let him know my disgust at his feeding! I am not hungry at all b/c I ate a little over budget already for dinner before he even ate...but still that pizza killed me. Now I must say I gave him the finger jokingly but am hoping he fed all the leftovers to the dogs before I have access to it. I am 3 days from surgery and will spend the next three days following the clear liquid diet even though my surgeon on requires the day before be clear liquid. I am overly prepared for this surgey and feel like I am planning a major vacation even though I only live 3 mins from the hospital I am having surgery at. My bags packed, my outfit is chosen, I am going to have a pedi/mani and a haircut on Monday and even bought a new outfit to where to/from the hospital. This is a huge event in my life and I hope to have memories (good ones) for years to come. I have been explaining to my 3 yr old boy that mommy is going to the hospital to have surgery on my belly. I hope he never remembers mommy as fat. I am going to spend this last weekend before surgery cleaning up the house and giving my husband and little boy lots of my attention. I need to start now by changing Jacob into his pjs so goodnight.

    Great Post Op Book

I was (and am) such a foodie, that I bought four books right after weight loss surgery. My favorite is Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery by Patt Levine and Michele Bontempo-Saray. Good advice and recipes and it tells you how to adjust them for wherever you are in your weight loss or whatever surgery you've had. I'm reading three others in bits and pieces: - Before & After: Living and Eating Well After Weight-Loss Surgery by Susan Maria Leach - Eat It Up! The Complete Mid/Body/Spirit Guide to a Full Life After Weight Loss Surgery by Connie Stapleton, PhD - The EVERYTHING Post Weight Loss Surgery Cookbook by Jennifer Whitlock Heisler, RN My other favorite is the Paleo Comfort Foods Cookbook by Julie and Charles Mayfield. I have made so many good things from that cookbook and it's always consistently good. It works well for me because I really love Protein and veggies and that's mostly what the recipes comprise. I love the Ham and Egg Cups which are beautiful enough for a holiday brunch. The Mashed Cauliflower recipe in there is my favorite and I plan to make their Bangers and Mash (with the aforementioned Mashed Cauliflower) for St. Patrick's Day. No green beer for me on that day though. The thought of beer just revolts me. Have a fantastic, skinnier day!! Carol
  23. Go to your surgeon, just to ensure you're fine/or not & be honest about your concerns/pain, etc. I still get spasms at 4 mos out & it helps that my nutritionist (one of 3 free ongoing monthly group support seminars offered by my surgeon) said, "Your stomach's the size of an egg, make a sunnyside up egg so you can see what you can hold. Eat slowly & chew like crazy, don't drink anything for 30 min before/after. Cut your food into sm bites, arrange the bites into the Alphabet, starting w 'A' & take a bite once you've made that letter. Then arrange the next bites into 'B' and so forth. Do this w every meal." I can only handle about 3 baby forks of regular foods & I still can't eat meats (they come right back up), but I can eat eggs, NF/SF: cheeses, cottage cheese & Greek yogurts, and fish (a few bites of each), in addition to the broths, popsicles, fudgesicles, creamsicles, puddings & jellos. I've eaten 2 bites of an English muffin, a slice of cooked bacon & 2 sausages (at separate times, w my egg). Since I tend to still inhale my food, I find that I'm my own worst enemy (self-sabotage) and I'm seeing a therapist to deal w my body dysmorphic & eating issues. I make myself shrimp fetticcine & eat 3 bites on a baby fork (also use a baby spoon). I'm a foodie & chef so I make everything fresh. I make soups/broths, but still can't eat French Onion, Chicken, Veggie, etc. soups (just made myself some, but will try again at 6 mos out). Going to get an avocado & hope I can eat a little bit. Sm victories like eating a few bites of an avocado, are so important. I'm still getting my 3 90 gms shakes in daily, because I'm learning to eat correctly & need the protein. I do get in at least 80 oz of liquids daily, aside from my shakes. As long as you check in w your surgeon/nutritionist to ensure you're doing everything correctly, don't worry about what you can't eat, but focus on what you can eat & be gently and loving to yourself at all times. I've been exercising since the day of surgery and if walking is good for you, do that & enjoy your own journey. I got a flu shot, came down w the flu, so haven't done much for almost a week but walk my dogs! When I feel well, I'll get my 2.5 ml walks in. Please forget about comparing yourself to anyone else on their own journeys: what I've learned is to just get support here on these forums as everyone else is following their own individual paths to health & wellness. Namaste.

    CPAP Issues

They REALLY don't want people adjusting their own CPAPS. but it can take a month or more just to get into a sleep study, and then another 2-4 weeks for the evaluation to come back and tell you wha tit should be. And by then you'll have lost even MORE weight and it'll STILL be wrong. Long ago I did a google search on the make/model of my cpap and found a comment on a forum that shows the magical key-combination to change my pressure. I never set it above a certain pressure, but I set it lower if I know it needs to be lower. (and I can tell). Up to you. but there are options.
